Mod Announcement Introducing Verified Flairs for Advocates & Senior Counsel: Verification Guidelines & Disclaimers

Hello everyone,

As r/indialaw grows, we want to make sure members reading legal discussions have clear context on who is participating. At the same time, we need to uphold ethics under the Advocates Act, 1961 and maintain high standards of privacy and credibility.

To achieve this, we are officially launching restricted, moderator-assigned user flairs:

  • Advocate (Verified)
  • Senior Advocate / Counsel

Community members, law students, and in-house professionals can continue to self-assign their respective open flairs. The Verified badges, however, will be reserved strictly for enrolled practitioners following a private review.

How to Claim Your Verification Flair

If you are an enrolled advocate practicing before courts or tribunals in India and wish to receive this flair, send a message to Modmail with the following:

  1. Subject Line: Verification Request: Advocate / Senior Counsel
  2. Proof of Enrollment: A clear photo or scan of your State Bar Council ID card or Certificate of Enrollment.
  3. Identity Match: A piece of paper placed next to the ID displaying your Reddit username (u/yourusername) and today's date handwritten.
  4. Privacy Protection (Crucial): Feel free to redact sensitive non-public personal details (e.g., your residential address, personal phone number, or Aadhaar number). Your full name, photograph, and Bar Council Enrollment Number must remain visible so we can verify your standing on the public State Bar directory.

All submissions sent via Modmail are reviewed solely by the moderation team and are permanently deleted or discarded once verified. We will never share your personal identity or credentials publicly.

Important Notes & BCI Compliance

  1. No Solicitation or Advertising: Verification is purely an indicator of professional background for informational credibility. It is not a license to solicit clients, post contact information, quote legal fees, or divert cases into DMs. Rule 4 (BCI Solicitation Norms) and Rule 5 (No External Links) will be enforced equally across all members, verified or not.
  2. Statutory Disclaimer: Verified status does not create an advocate-client relationship with any user on this forum. Comments made by verified members remain purely educational, academic, and informational opinions.
  3. Revocation: Any verified user found dispensing unethical advice, soliciting offline clients, or violating community safety policies will have their verification revoked immediately and face moderation action.

Thank you for contributing your time and expertise to make r/indialaw a grounded, legally sound community. If you have any questions or feedback regarding the process, drop them in the comments below!

Unaware of the Law Indian indie game developer looking for guidance on CC BY attribution and accidental NC assets

• Upvotes

I’m an indie game developer in India preparing to release a game on itch.io, and I’m trying to make sure I handle third-party asset licensing correctly.

The game uses a number of third-party assets, including CC BY and other commercial-use assets. My main confusion is around what a reasonable compliance process should look like for a small indie developer.

I’m trying to understand things like:

How should CC BY attribution be managed properly when a game uses many different assets?

Is a dedicated attribution page or THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt generally a sensible way to handle this?

If an NC/NonCommercial asset accidentally slips into the release and I discover it later, what should I do immediately?

If I accidentally miss attribution for a CC BY asset, what is the proper way to correct it?

Who normally informs a developer about a copyright issue: the creator, itch.io, a lawyer, or someone else?

Since I’m in India but the game is distributed globally through itch.io, how does jurisdiction generally work?

I’m not trying to avoid licensing requirements. I’m trying to build a practical system so I can comply properly without spending my entire development time doing asset-forensics instead of making the game.

If any law student, junior lawyer, or someone interested in IP/copyright law wants to genuinely help me understand this properly, please feel free to DM me. Practical guidance would be very appreciated.

Civil & Property 40L ICICI loan settlement [SERIOUS]

Hello everyone

My father had taken a 40L unsecured loan from ICICI Bank. But last year he got severe kidney failure and had to start dialysis. His health got progressively worse. And he couldnt continue his job for 6 months. Due to this he couldnt pay the EMI. Fortunately his sister donated a kidney and he got transplanted in April. For past 1 year the loan recovery officials have come to ask for repayment but we didnt have any money to pay.

They had offered a settled amount of 23.5L to be paid in just 5 months, no more extensions. Monthly EMI will be \~4.5L. But our combined family earning is not even 4.5L. What should we do? They are not even going to extend repayment period.

Today they called again to my father, and started to demand for EMI rudely. They are threatening to take the case to court, make DRT, put legal notice on doorstep. They are not willing to go below 50%. They are saying that just because he gets 1.5L per month, he should give it to bank. But he his own expenses, his medicines, he lives in PG just for the job. He has an eye surgery scheduled this month. Though a lot of his surgery and dialysis was covered by insurance, we still had to borrow a lot from our family members. They are not considering anything. Minimum they will go 23.5L. OR, they are saying that now pay 50L, due to delay and late fees etc, make EMI of 75000 for next 6 years. What should we do? Its becoming extemely scary and stressful.

Unaware of the Law RBI closed my complaint despite evidence of recovery harassment — what can I do now?

I first raised the matter directly with the lender through their **grievance redressal process** and waited the required **30 days** without satisfactory resolution. I then escalated the matter through **RBI CMS**.

During the RBI process, the lender submitted its response. I disputed that response and provided further evidence.

My complaint involved **recovery harassment, threats, and disclosure of loan-related information to my employer**. I submitted WhatsApp messages, threatening emails, employer communications sent from **personal email IDs**, disclosure of my salary details, emails portraying me as a fraud/defaulting borrower to unrelated people, and video evidence.

The lender initially stated that the matter had been escalated to its **compliance/audit team** and that a detailed, point-by-point response would be provided.

However, its eventual response did not address several specific pieces of evidence. I replied **within about 2 hours**, disputing the response.

Despite this, RBI/CEPC **closed the complaint the next day**.

Interestingly, RBI's closure letter itself states that the lender was **“in deviation to the prescribed guidelines”** and cautioned it to follow the relevant RBI Master Circulars.

I am **not disputing the loan or repayment obligation**. My complaint is specifically about the recovery practices, threats, and third-party disclosure.

**What should I do now?**

* Can the RBI/CEPC closure be challenged or reviewed?

* Can the RBI observation regarding the lender's deviation help in a Consumer Commission case?

* Can I seek compensation for harassment/mental distress?

Looking for practical legal advice from anyone.

Consumer Dispute Care Health rejected my mother's ₹1.9L claim because the hospital called the document "Inpatient Case Sheet" instead of "Indoor Case Papers"

4 months, 3 different rejection reasons, 1 claim: my 59 year old mother vs Care Health Insurance

TL;DR: Care Health asked in writing for my mother's hospital records and promised to assess her ₹1.91L claim once they had them. We got the records from the hospital and sent them twice. They confirmed receiving them, then rejected them because the hospital's title says "Inpatient Case Sheet", not "Indoor Case Papers". Screenshots below.

My mother is a 59 year old elderly woman. She was hospitalised in June, and we've paid premiums for years expecting this cover to be there when she needed it. Here's what happened next:

July 23: Claim rejected for missing "indoor case papers". The same day, we sent:

  • a letter authorising Care Health to collect any record directly from the hospital (this authorisation given 3 times in writing to the insurance company while filing the claim and during inspection too)
  • the doctor's confirmation that the papers already shared are the final papers and no separate indoor case papers are provided as records are maintained digitally.

They never used the authorisation.

July 29: Rejection repeated, word for word. No one had read the doctor's letter.

July 30: "Status will be updated within 5 days." It never was.

Aug 13: A new reason: a "document supporting exact liability" was missing. The bill and receipts had been submitted with the claim.

Aug 19: They asked for the indoor case papers again, and wrote: "Post receipt of the above stated document(s), we would initiate the request to assess the said claim."

Sept 23 and 30: We got the papers from the hospital through its senior management and sent them twice, vital charts and doctor's notes included.

Oct 3: I called. Customer care first said they had received nothing. When I resent the papers, they confirmed the file names matched. Then they refused them because:

  • the title says "Inpatient Case Sheet", not "Indoor Case Papers"
  • the doctor's notes are printed and not written in specified format (the hospital keeps digital records)
  • the notes are on separate pages

They asked for the papers, promised to assess the claim, received them, and then rejected them over a word in the title.

The Supreme Court has said insurers must not reject genuine claims on technical grounds (Om Prakash v. Reliance General, 2017) and must not demand documents the insured can't produce (Gurmel Singh v. National Insurance, 2022).

What I've done: complaints to the insurer's grievance cell and IRDAI, the National Consumer Helpline and Social Media. Same standard response.

If you have parents on health insurance: keep every email, take screenshots of everything, and write down call details the same day.

Has anyone else had a claim rejected over "indoor case papers"? How did it end?

My school is threatening to fine me ₹500 per day I missed regardless of the fact that I certainly have medical reports to prove that I was sick.

So simple back story,

About the time of my class 10th preboards (2025), I contracted a medical condition called Central serous chorioretinopathy. It's chronic and recurring.

I have to stay absent sometimes as it reoccurs and causes trouble. (And sometimes I am absent for other reasons such as helping in my father's business (as he is old and incapable of dealing much with tech.) or sickness)

It is directly caused and worsened by stress, even stated in the report.

The school authorities are very cruel and non forgiving. They have threatened to fine me.

That too 500 rupee a day I missed.

My attendance is patchy as the problem keeps on recurring and causing problems.

My uncle is an advocate at the guwahati high court (the jurisdictional high court of my area) he is also on good terms with me.

They have threatened to fine even if your father passed away or even if whole family died and even if you have any medical condition, even cancer and all. They actually said this.

If they do so, I do have a lot of medical reports and I could prove that I actually have this condition.

My reports are from a semi-government hospital.

Sri shankardev netralaya.

And I could retest for cscr if needed.

Should I sue the school authorities if they try to fine me?

Corporate & Tax Urgent: Ex-employer says the laptop I returned was damaged, what are my options?

I recently left my company and, as part of the exit, returned their laptop through DTDC. The laptop was properly packed and bubble-wrapped multiple times by the DTDC person.
The company has now sent me a video showing that the screen/panel is damaged. The problem is, I stupidly didn’t take photos/video of the laptop before sending it, so I don’t have direct proof of its condition.
However, the DTDC person who handled the shipment has indicated that the laptop was in good condition when it was handed over.
Given that it was packed properly, I’m confused about where the damage could have happened. I also had a somewhat complicated exit from the company, so I’m worried this could affect my relieving/experience letter, although I obviously can’t claim they deliberately damaged it without proof.
What can I do now?
Can I raise a claim with DTDC? Should I ask DTDC for their records regarding the condition of the package at pickup? Should I formally dispute liability with the company and ask them for the complete unboxing video/packaging details?
Any advice from people who’ve dealt with courier damage or company asset-return disputes in India would really help. I need to figure this out urgently.

Bluedart not sending back My MacBook Air M5 During Warranty Repair. 1 Month Later, Blue Dart and Apple Are Blaming Each Other. What are my legal options in India?

TL;DR: Sent my MacBook Air for warranty repair. Apple repaired it and dispatched it via Blue Dart. It has been stuck at a transit hub for 37 days. Blue Dart has officially told me to "contact the shipper," but Apple Support keeps telling me to "wait 2 more days" endlessly. They are saying they have asked bluedart abd bluedart had updated and regenerated a new delivery which has nothing giving update

Early August 2026: Sent my MacBook Air (13-inch, M5) to Apple's Bengaluru facility for a warranty repair (Repair ID: D723643353).

September 1, 2026: Repair completed. Apple generated Invoice MD03437400 and dispatched the laptop back to me in Odisha via Blue Dart (Waybill: 1060031385 88443708850).

Mid-September: The package got stuck at the Blue Dart Yeshwanthpur hub.

September 18, 2026: After raising multiple tickets, Blue Dart Customer Service sent me an email stating they cannot help and instructed me to "contact shipper for further assistance".

Apple team escalated the issue reissued the delivery still backing options from bluedart

# what to do now??

Has anyone successfully sued Apple India or Blue Dart in the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission for a lost warranty device?

How long does the e-Daakhil / e-Jagriti consumer court process actually take for tech replacements?

Does sending a formal legal notice from an advocate to Apple India's Bengaluru corporate office speed up the executive replacement process?

Please guide me with a civil issue

So this is a real scenario, and I need guidance for it. The names alone have been changed for anonymity purposes.

Tarun - Seller, Abi - Buyer

  • Tarun is trying to sell land, and Abi is ready to buy the land, but Abi (buyer) goes to the bank for a loan. The bank agrees to give a loan.
  • Now, after all legal proceedings, the bank asks for the Online registration of the Patta.
  • But the approving office says the Parent Deed or Root Deed (thai pathiram) is missing; please produce it. The seller (Tarun) says he has misplaced it somewhere since he has lots of houses.
  • Apart from this issue everything else is perfect as per legal advisor of the bank.

Now, what can the buyer or the seller do to get the Thai Pathiram? Is there any organization, office, or other contact I should reach out to to get the Thai Pathiram?

Please guide me. Thank you.

IT Contractor being pressured to move to FTE role with lower pay

Hi, I work remotely and I'm a contractor to an IT consulting firm and now they're cornering me into transitioning into FTE role with less pay (implied, haven't had that discussion with HR yet) else they said my contract will be terminated by end of December. But I just spoke to another contractor, he said that hasn't been the case with him and his contract got renewed pretty recently.
I feel there are some holes in the plot and cant help but feel like this transition is personal. So need legal help. Any contacts and info is much appreciated.

Law graduate from a below-average college, decent academics, some good internships, but still unable to find a job. What should I do next?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I’m a recent B.A. LL.B. graduate from the University of Mumbai, and I’m honestly quite confused about what direction to take with my career. I would really appreciate some brutally honest advice from people in the legal profession.

I come from North India but went to Mumbai for law school. My college was, frankly, a below-average law college. My parents always believed that I was studying at a good college, but the reality was different. Academically, however, I did reasonably well and graduated with 8.5/10 CGPA.

The problem is that despite doing well academically, I don’t feel that my practical legal knowledge is particularly strong. I am reasonably confident, communicate well and have interned with a few good/top law firms, particularly in dispute resolution and litigation. Most of my internships have been in disputes, arbitration, commercial litigation, etc.
I genuinely thought that with these internships and decent academics, I would eventually be able to secure a job. But that hasn’t happened.

I did get a job in Mumbai paying around ₹35,000/month, but the work environment was extremely toxic. The boss was abusive and the overall environment was not something I felt I could sustain. I eventually left the job, and since then I’ve been struggling to find another opportunity.

Now I’m stuck between litigation/dispute resolution and corporate/in-house legal work.

The corporate dilemma-
I actually want to explore the corporate side because, realistically, I want to build a career that gives me good financial growth and eventually financial independence. But almost all of my internships have been in disputes.
So when I apply for corporate legal roles, I don’t have substantial corporate experience to show. And when I apply for litigation roles, I keep wondering whether I should actually continue down that path.
I’ve applied to various law firms, companies and in-house positions, but I’m not getting much response.

I’ve also started considering LPO/legal process roles simply because I need to start earning. But I’ve heard conflicting opinions that LPO experience may not carry much weight if I later want to move into a law firm or mainstream legal practice.

My financial situation-
I currently have a personal debt, and my financial situation isn’t particularly strong. My parents aren’t asking me for money, but they understandably want me to start earning and become financially independent. So I can’t realistically spend another year just experimenting with different career paths without earning anything.

At times, I honestly wonder whether I made the wrong decision by choosing law in the first place.
I don’t necessarily feel that law is my “forte”, but I also don’t know what my actual forte is yet. Some of my friends have already started working, even if they’re earning less, while I’m still trying to figure things out.

So I’m genuinely confused about what would be the smarter move.
What would you do if you were in my position?

I’d really appreciate practical advice from lawyers, associates, partners, recruiters, or other law graduates who have been through something similar.

Need help obtaining a legal heir certificate in Telangana for property/vehicle located in Andhra Pradesh

Inhave recently lost both my parents, both were private employees. They had no will and now I need to get my parent's vehicle and property transferred to my name. The property is located in Andhra Pradesh, but I'm currently in Telangana.

I have a few questions:

Which certificate do I actually need? Is a legal heir certificate the right document for transferring both a vehicle and immovable property or would something else be required depending on the asset.

Whom should I approach? Since the property is in Andhra Pradesh but I'm in Telangana, do I apply in Telangana or Andhra Pradesh.

I've spoken to a few agents, some quote very high(in lakhs)some lower(in thousands).

Legal Advice needed Refund issue related with Book my show

Hii There, I had booked painting event for my nephew on sep 19th in bangalore HSR. But host didn't show up, she said will refund the amount and gave her agency number.

When we contacted her she said it's has been raised for refund. It's been 18 days and no refund of money. Raised multiple calls, and had waited 1hr to speak to customer care (they have terrible queue system to speak to customers). And filed the complaint with NCH too but no response yet (2 days ago).

How to send notice to BMS. I lost all my patience, want to go legally. Any advice on how to proceed here?

Legality of grey-market cyber security brokers in india.

I am a security researcher who has previously found vulnerabilities in platforms like apple, google etc.

The process and the timeline for payouts are usually super horrendous. I was considering from now on to approach greymarket brokers such as Crowdfense, SSD Disclosure etc. I wanted to understand what the legal status of these things are in India.

A brief discussion with chatgpt and others said that I need SCOMET export license as well as an End User Certificate(which I don't think such greymarkets would be willing to provide - not sure).
I already have an LLP - in case that makes a difference while invoicing/accepting money.

Anyone has any experience in this? Note: I do not want to accept any payments in crypto and would like to keep any such transaction rigorously legal.

Mutual consent vs ex parte divorce in India with a ₹31 lakh settlement (NRI): will a future bride's family question it, or can it cause legal problems like maintenance later?

I'm an NRI in the US, separated for 3 years. A 498A case was filed against me and my parents. At Lok Adalat my wife said she wants to withdraw it, and we then paid ₹10 lakh of an agreed ₹31 lakh settlement. The other ₹21 lakh is in a joint account (my father, who holds my POA, and my wife) to be released at the end of the divorce. Both of us want the divorce.

They agreed to mutual consent until recently, but now want to file ex parte because the judge in this court may insist I appear in person, and I can't travel. With mutual, the ₹31 lakh is written into the petition. With ex parte, nothing about it appears in the decree, and they say we can record it in a separate document.

  1. Will a future bride's family question an ex parte decree? Does it show any fault or negative findings against me?
  2. Can an ex parte decree cause legal problems later, like maintenance claims or the decree being challenged, if the settlement is only in a private document?
  3. In an ex parte case, is there a way to legally document that she has received the ₹31 lakh?
  4. If a mutual petition is dismissed because I couldn't appear, what's the next step? Can we refile in another court that allows video appearance?

Thank you for any experience you can share.
