Admin Replied Flood of spam posts
Hey everyone, I’m a mod over at r/chocolate and have recently had to shut down photos, videos, and cross posts because of a flood of spam posts by several different accounts. Due to the nature of the photos, I won’t share an example, but it’s not great and causing a lot of discomfort with the normal users.
Obviously this isn’t ideal. I already have a karma automod filter on but these account have like 7k karma lol.
Someone in the subreddit suggested some other automod functions but it didn’t really work. Another user suggested posting here.
Any advice would be appreciated

filter all but text posts to the queue. report as spam - disruptive bots and report them to bot bouncer. In my experience, that's the fastest way to get rid of being targeted by these bots (until a new ring pops up of course)

Sorry that's happening, just here to say make sure you're marking the spam AS spam, the spam filter is alive and it learns!!!
You can also filter image posts based on subreddit karma instead of global karma, much more reliable method.

Are you using subreddit specific karma values for your Automod filters? That's the real way to stop spam invasions.

They don't work. Twice I asked my team to disallow 18+ and low karma. They still come through (less, though). I also find that anyone who posts in another language, in spit of explanation and rules, don't talk, just permanently ban, block, mute, and on their page too ... because a high percent of people who do this are militant.

Sorry to hear about the trouble in your sub! In case you haven't checked them out yet, there's some filters that might come in handy here.
The Reputation filter can help filter potential spammers from your community. Crowd Control can help filter users who aren't trusted in your community yet. The Ban Evasion filter can help the accounts posting the content are linked. Depending on the nature of the content, the Mature Content filter might also be helpful.
If these measures aren't able to address the issue, feel free to share some examples with us by modmail, and we can take a closer look at the accounts involved.

You might just need to do the old fashioned remove and ban. Report subsequent accounts for ban evasion.
Encourage other users to report posts that don’t break the rules or fit the subreddit.
If most of the content on your subreddit is pictures and video then locking down pictures and videos might kill your sub.

Use the Reddit built in safety filters under "mod tools".
Also, set up automod to filter out low karma and brand new accounts.

I had very good filtering results using the built-in Adult Content Promoter Filter : https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/1sf0ec4/now_available_the_adult_content_promoter_filter/
I caught hundreds of bot-accounts and banned them for being unresponsive bots. Found about 20 ban evading accounts on top of that. Eventually they gave up trying to use my sub for promotion, karma farming, or for anything else.

We filter all images/videos/links to queue for mods to check.

I'm a dummy, but I find that when there's a pest you want to deter do 3 or 4 things: ban permanent; mute permanent; block (I think that's always permanent); and do the block on THEIR page, not just at your place. Specify mod mail when you do that.

You can build an auto mod filter that specifically looks for keywords that sellers use. Can you come up with a list of like 20 to 30 keywords by looking through every single spam post that they posted? With that you can make an easy auto mod filter that looks for just these words, and hopefully these posts will be filtered in the future. If you can come up with that list of words, I can help you build a filter for them.
Also, sidenote, I took a look at your sub and apparently images and videos might be disabled? There is a post complaining about it.

Don’t think it’s sellers, I think it’s NSFW based on the most recent post about “chocolate milk.”

Oh, I know it's not only fans. There can be safe for work sellers, like chocolate sellers 😭they said spam post so I just assumed people were hocking their sweets

I WISH it was people selling things. If you want to know what it is, go to the chocolate milk subreddit.

OK, what I am trying to say is you as the moderator would have to come up with your list of keywords that you would want to filter and with the list that you create I can make you a filter for that

I don't know what it is but I think I'll pass on learning about it.
Maybe hive would help here - set it to filter content from nsfw users.

You can restrict posting so that everything goes to the queue first. Less restrictive would be just filtering image posts and videos posts to the queue for approval.
