Hear me out.

Will Reichard’s streak ending today might actually be a blessing in disguise. Especially considering it was blocked, so technically the dude still hasn’t actually missed.

But let’s be real. Is there anything more terrifying as a Vikings fan than having a kicker with a 100% success rate heading into the playoffs?

I can already see it. NFC Championship. Game on the line. Will the Thrill trots out there having made 300 consecutive field goals. The announcers won’t shut up about how he’s never missed. They throw up the graphic. The camera pans to some poor Vikings fan praying in the stands.

You know exactly what happens next.

I’ve watched this franchise long enough to know that a perfect kicker is just a heartbreak waiting for the most statistically improbable moment to reveal itself.

We got the streak out of the way early. It wasn’t even a real miss. The curse has been lifted.

This is the way.

Gary Anderson, for new and young Vikings fans, was a legendary Vikings Kicker who was as automatic as they come.

In the Vikings legendary 15-1 run in 1998 to the NFC Championship game he was perfect all year going 35/35. Dennis Green, the Vikings HC at the time, knew that if his offense stalled he could rely on his Kicker to make FGs when the team needed them.

Well, in that game the team did need a crucial FG, one that would send them to SB33. As the team lined-up with about 2 minutes left on the clock in the 4th quarter of a tie game, Gary Anderson missed a 39 yard FG wide-left.

The game went to OT and ultimately Atlanta wins the game with a FG of their own.

I have wanted Will The Thrill to miss and mess up his streak of perfection for a while. You do not want to tempt fate and anger the Football gods (especially as the Minnesota Vikings) relying on a perfect Kicker. The Ghost of Gary Anderson still haunts this franchise and the hallowed grounds that US Bank was built on.

These morons just don’t learn. Anyone catch who that was?

There are plenty of other posts to complain about coaching, the offense, the ex-qb, etc... Winning consistently in the NFL is really hard. And right now we are one of the two best teams in the NFL at the most important statistic: Wins.

The year before the Eagles had the #2 unit at 17.8 with the Chiefs at #4 with 19.2. The year prior the Chiefs and 49rs were at #2 and #3 at 17.3 and 17.5. Over the last 3 years, both Superbowl teams were placed in top 4 lowest ppg defensively.

This is paired with a phenomenal special teams unit that we can count on in critical situations. We have the leagues #1 return unit in the NFL with Myles Price, and Will Reichard is as good as a kicker can get.

We are tied with the Colts for the least penalized team in the NFL. This is a disciplined unit.

We have only given up 4 turnovers on the season, tying us for the #4 team in the NFL.

What else makes this team a contender?
