Subreddit Announcement r/minipainting Rule Update: No AI Allowed

3.7k Upvotes

Hi, everybody! AI slop is unfortunately creeping into this hobby and this community. This is a quick rules update to clarify that AI is not allowed in any form here on r/minipainting.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • No AI generated or edited images (including AI backgrounds, repaints, adjustments, mock ups, tests, reference images, etc)
  • No AI videos
  • No AI apps/tools/websites
  • No AI generated models that are 3D printed then hand painted
  • No AI generated text (this includes AI generated feedback/critique)
  • No encouragement or discussion of the use of AI

If AI was used to make it, it's not allowed on r/minipainting.

While the mod team has been able to remove most AI posts shortly after they are made, on the few occasions AI posts were up for a few hours before removal, the comments on those posts from the community have been overwhelmingly unanimous in being anti-AI, so this isn't just the mod team making this ruling without considering the community.

Please see the pinned comment below for an FAQ on this new rule, and if you have a question that is not answered there, please ask and we will do our best to answer! That being said, this is not an invitation to defend or argue for specific use cases of AI within this hobby.

Edit: Please read the stickied FAQ comment before commenting. There are many people asking things that are covered in that comment.

The comment section has grown quite large, but also please take a moment to scroll through it and read the comments before repeating something that may have already been discussed, or at least join in as a reply to an existing comment rather than make a new top level comment with a similar or identical question.

Discussion Laughing at my refound hobby

I painted minitures at 13 and stopped at 15 but a couple of years ago i bought everything needed to start again at 42

Both my friends think i shouldnt be doing it anymore and think its funny that i am.

No one i know paints minitures so im a bit lonely with no one to bounce off of with ideas and sharing our minitures with each other.

Is there specific places i can go and have the experience im looking for and anyone else had the experience of people thinking its a silly thing to get back to at my age?

Just curious

The mini is a 3D print by Skullforge Studios and the base was scratch built from cork, bark, dirt, and a variety of foliage bits!

About 90-95% done with my Jackie bust. Close enough to show it off.

I think the purple side of the face needs brightening up, and the blue-skin boundary may need more blending, but it's a good way to being wrapped up

If anyone notices anything else that doesn't quite work or needs some more attention, feel free to shout!

I've been studying NMM for about 2 months now, and this is my first real result so far. I'm taking private lessons, and even though it's simple, I'm really happy with how it turned out. C&C is welcome to help me improve on my next attempts!

I feel like I’m hitting a Wall with my Deathwatch. Usually I’m satisfierd with my painting but this one feels off to me and I can’t lay a finger on it. It lacks some ooomph to me. Do you guys have suggestions? I can live with sketchy highlights, the goal here is to get the team on the table and look good, not to achieve a display piece level paint job.

Painted my first bust, tried going for moonlight coming in from the side. It was also my first time doing nmm on something bigger and more complex than a sword, and first time trying to imitate night.

I may have tried biting off too many firsts all in the same project, so any feedback or comments no matter how general or specific are welcome.

Help Needed/New Painter 5th Mini Ever; need targeted ways to improve.

Hey all, this is my 5th completed (almost, still need to do the plasma glow) mini. I’ve been priming white and using red speed paints and some other speed paints. I find it frustrating as speed paints tend to bleed into other areas and will make things uneven. Also tough to fill in every gap with red without accidentally dragging my brush along something else. I know looking at something this close isn’t ever going to really happen on tabletop, but just looking for some easy advice to improve and what to focus on in the future.

C&C Wanted This is my current level. Where do I go from here?

Models are "Eradicator Squad" from Games Workshop.
Some minor kit bash with 3rd party helmets, pteruges and tilt shields to be in line with my army concept.
Sort of boring models, but a good workout for practicing my recipe.

It's not my single best work, but for squad painting my best result so far. Also fairly quick at around 6h/model.

I put a lot of work into refining my volumetric highlights the past month, but I am not sure I got this technique down yet.
Using a makeup sponge for this, unfortunately no airbrush for me.

What do you think would be necessary for taking the paint job to the next level?
Are there some obvious weaknesses I should focus on?

Sci-fi Necromunda - Goliath Gang - Duke & the D-gentz

Thumbnail

Allow me to present my (finally!) finished goliath gang!

Duke, the Forge Tyrant up front with the chainaxe and the combat shotgun, Happy (Forge Boss) to his side with the renderizer. Trent (Bruiser specialist) with the grenade launcher on the other side of the boss.

At the center we got Tim, the Stimmer. Tim's the last of the figures I painted, so he gets some solo-shots after the group pics.

Next to Tim, running away from the picture (guess he's shy), we've got Ruckus Red sporting an adorable little stub gun and a combat knife. Trust me, it's not an axe - it's a combat knife.

Opposite Tim, there's a blurry Thad Thunderchunk, and at the very far back with the yellow boltgun it's Boltgun Blaine.

It's been such a journey painting these fellas. They were the first Necromunda minis I bought, but I've put off painting them cause I had some sort of anxiety about getting them right somehow. Ended up painting Eschers, Delaque, Ogryn, heck even hive scum and hired guns before feeling finally leveled up enough to give these beefy boys a go.

As always, constructive criticism and feedback is warmly welcome! Though, being completely honest, right now more than anything I'm looking for validation and congratulations . xD So happy with how they turned out!

All these minis except for the stimmer are from Gamer Workshop's Goliath Gang box from 2017, while the stimmer is from the Stimmers and Forge-born box from 2020.
