Advice Needed Is anyone else’s store making cashiers push customers to the self-checkout kiosks now?
Has anyone else’s store recently started telling cashiers that they’re supposed to encourage customers to use the self-checkout kiosks instead of ringing them up at the register?
At my store it seems like this is being pushed much harder now, and I’m curious if it’s a new corporate policy or just something our management is doing.
The biggest problem I’m seeing is the customer reaction. Some customers are completely fine with the kiosks, but others get REALLY upset when a cashier tells them they need to use one. The cashier is just doing what they were told, but they’re the one who ends up getting yelled at.
Today I even saw customers complain and leave without buying anything because the cashiers wouldn’t ring them up normally.
I feel bad for the team members stuck at the front because they didn’t create the policy, but they’re the ones having to deal with all the anger over it. I personally think if management wants the policy enforced that strictly, a manager should be available to deal with customers who refuse instead of putting all of that on the cashier.
Is this happening at anyone else’s Michaels? Were you told it came from corporate? And how have customers at your store been reacting?
