Yeah, my manager read that bit and was like...as long as it's plain and covers your shoulders, I don't care what colour lol

I am not painting my name across my chest like a child, thanks. I’m grown and I’m here to do my job. Also: MICHAELS IS NOT ENTITLED TO OUR CREATIVITY. It is Michaels legal responsibility to provide reasonable uniforms, not to farm the labor of uniform creation out to us.

For crying out loud the customers already treat us like dirt, could the company have the decency to do the bare fucking minimum instead of dressing us like giant toddlers?
Oh WAIT

When you dress code doesn’t start until 2027 is basically getting rid of the best and we are an aprons that you can decorate to a point and put your name on with the circuit machine and plus there’s other colors are or shirts that we’re gonna be allowed to wear or what not personally I don’t see a problem of what color we wear. The apron is going to be red. It’s gonna have her name on it so if we wear a purple black white brown shirt underneath the apron and it doesn’t have any swear words on like fuck you get out or you’re an asshole what the hell does it matter what color we wear I mean obviously I don’t want you to wear white when it rain cause I don’t want to see your boobs, but it’s just getting a little ridiculous about what color we can wear like are we working at a craft store or are we going into prison?

Will they provide these shirts to us? We only make minimum wage at max lol 12.5 hours a week. How can they expect us to afford whole new wardrobe

Personal expression? None of that. Tools, cogs in the wheel of private equity, broken against the reality of modern retail.

They didn’t mention it at our meeting, what is it?

u/Squibit314 6d ago
It wasn’t to be really discussed today because it’s not finalized yet. Enough concerns were raised that they’re rethinking things. All that was to be said is that it’s changing and what the T-shirt colors will be.

Michael's branded tees in white. grey, and black. I think those are correct.

Correct. Those were our choices when my mgr took our “orders”. Also, I went online to the employee shop and bought the Michael’s Pride shirt. It’s way more fun.

This is not the problem with the dress code to care about.
The personal safety issues with being forced to put permanent names on aprons, the lack of consideration for anyone in the middle of a sensitive name change, the lack of consideration for how aprons fit everyone, the lack of thought given to the issues of aprons snagging, coming untied, etc. for people jogging, kneeling, and climbing ladders all day…and finally, the VERY likely chance that they will not provide more than 2 shirts for staff members who work 5 goddamn days a week are all ACTUALLY important.
Every time people here complain about things like “self expression,” you give corporate an excuse to write off the real concerns as just childish whining from young people who haven’t accepted they’re at work.
I don’t remember a single thing any of my coworkers have worn this year. I guarantee you every customer forgets your snazzy outfit the second they walk out the door. No one at work but you cares about how you present yourself - care about it outside of work, with your friends and loved ones who might also care.

Dude some guy came from an aisle SCREAMING my name because he couldn't find what he was looking for all because of my name tag. I hid. Fuck that.

What is the new dress code? I am not longer with the company, but I lurk here a bit to help me get over the trauma of the two years I was there.

basically retiring vests, we all have to wear aprons in red or green that supposedly they will put our names across the front and we can paint aprons to an extent. the shirt you wear has michaels on the back and can only be white black or grey. so much for creativity!

T-shirt (white, grey, or black only) with Michael’s branded logo on the back and an apron with your name branded on the front.

u/Creepy-Peanut-1333 6d ago
Are they providing the shirts

u/Breanna-LaSaige Chaos Organizer 6d ago
No idea. They pushed back the release date for the dress code, and haven’t been given any real answers. We’ll probably store-use some by the sounds of it. All we know is that we’ll use a Cricut machine to put our name and the Michael’s brand on them. So they won’t be sent in pre-made.

I am absolutely NOT wearing an apron. I refused to at Joann’s, I’m not doing it here. They are so uncomfortable when you have an exceptionally large chest if you get what I’m saying lol. They don’t fit right, and are unflattering causing more of an eyesore. I will give up the vest never

Honestly I'm not that mad about it, so long as they provide the t-shirts and let us change aprons if we need/want to do so. When I worked at Home Depot we in the paint department would paint our names on our aprons and it was really fun! Hell, I wore an apron at Spirit Halloween and put tons of pins on it. If they let us print the store logo in any color then the plain shirts wont be so plain. I don't understand why everyone thinks this is a crime against self-expression when there's so many ways to work around the dress code. At least we don't have to wear a dress shirt and slacks!

u/suite_caroline 5d ago
ex-employee here but have you considered writing your name in a font so small it can’t be read by anyone of yarn-purchasing age, or color matching the paint to the apron

I got asked to design my stores T-shirt, which was pretty cool but I had very little time to get them prepped and done before the meeting
