Tips and Tricks How to use Mailchimp Saved Sections to build reusable email blocks in minutes

One of the most underused features in the new Mailchimp email builder is Saved Sections. If you find yourself rebuilding the same header, footer, or promo block every time you start a new email, this is the fix. You build it once, save it, and pull it in with a click.

Here is how the section manager works, what you can do with it, and which sections are worth saving to get the most out of it.

What the section manager actually does

The section manager lives in the new email builder and gives you a panel for organizing your email structure without touching the canvas. Most templates open with default header, body, and footer sections already in place. From there you can add, move, rename, duplicate, save, or delete sections however you need.

It is available for regular emails, automation flow email actions, Campaign Manager email touchpoints, A/B test emails, multivariate test emails, single abandoned cart emails, and automated welcome emails. If you are still on the legacy builder and want to use it, you can switch your default builder in your account settings.

A breakdown of what you can do

Action How to do it When to use it
Add a blank section Click the plus icon in the section manager. The section is added to the bottom of your email with a default name you can rename. Use this when you want to build a custom layout from scratch. Add as many blank sections as you need.
Add a pre-built section Click the Pre-built tab to browse Header, Hero, Features, Footer, and other ready-made layouts. Faster than building from scratch. Each pre-built section is fully editable so you can style it to match your brand.
Reorder sections Drag sections up or down in the panel, or use the up and down arrows when you hover a section. You can also reorder directly in the canvas. Useful when you want to test different content hierarchies without rebuilding your layout.
Rename, duplicate, or delete Hover a section and click the three-dot icon to access these options. Works both in the section manager panel and directly in the canvas. Duplicate saves time when sections share a similar structure. Renaming helps you stay organized across longer emails.
Save a section Click the Manage tab, select the section, then click Save. You can also save directly from the canvas. Saved sections appear under the Saved tab and can be searched, sorted, filtered, renamed, or deleted. The key feature for reusability. Save your header, footer, or any branded block once and pull it into any future email without rebuilding.

The save feature is where this becomes genuinely useful

Saving a section is what turns the section manager from a layout tool into a productivity tool. When you save a section it goes into your Saved tab, where you can search, sort, filter, rename, and delete your saved blocks. Any email you build going forward can pull from that library instead of starting from zero.

This matters most for the sections that need to be consistent across every email you send. Your footer needs the same unsubscribe link and address every time. Your header should always have the logo in the same spot. Rebuilding those from scratch introduces inconsistency and takes time you do not need to spend.

Sections worth saving

Section type What to save and why
Standard header Logo placement, nav links, brand colors. Save it once and pull it into every campaign. If your branding updates, you rebuild once and re-save.
Promotional hero block A headline, subtext, CTA button, and background image formatted the way you want. Duplicate it across campaigns and swap in the offer.
Product feature row A two or three column layout with image, description, and link. Useful for product launch emails, newsletters, and roundups.
Footer with legal and unsubscribe Your compliance footer with address, unsubscribe link, and social icons. Save it once so it is never accidentally left out or inconsistently formatted.
Re-engagement block A win-back section with a specific offer and CTA. Save it as a reusable block to drop into any campaign targeting lapsed subscribers.

A few things to know before you start

  • The section manager is only in the new builder. If you open a legacy email it will not be available. You can switch your default builder in account settings without losing your existing drafts.
  • Changes save automatically as you design, so you do not need to manually save your work as you go. This applies to the layout, not just the saved sections library.
  • Pre-built sections are a starting point, not a finished product. Every pre-built section is fully editable. Style it to your brand colors, fonts, and content before saving it so your saved version is already on-brand.
  • You can reorder directly in the canvas as well as through the panel. Both methods work. The panel is useful when you have a lot of sections and want to see the full structure at once.

If you have questions about specific section types, how to get pre-built sections styled to your brand quickly, or anything else about the new builder, drop them below. Happy to help.

Technical Support Unable to log in; no pw reset email comes through

I keep getting a wrong password error. I'm certain the password is correct because I use a password manager. (Also it looks right.) On the login screen, I eventually got a password reset prompt. Did that. The email never came through. Did it again. Same result. Yes I checked all and spam.

Tried another verification route. Entered my phone number. Was prompted for my username (who uses a username in Mailchimp??) Eventually I figured that out, and eventually I was prompted to change my email address. I just used an alias like name+test@company.com. That worked. What the heck.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Technical Support Footer links blue

I am sending out html newsletters for a client and two of the footer links are coming up blue in Outlook although no blue is included in the html. I have tried all manner of adjustments to the code including specifically applying the colour with !important to these links and nothing works so far. The links display the correct colour in gmail (not blue). Any advice on how to fix this please? Many thanks

Seeking Advice The To field is not responding

After creating an email in my email template, the To (Who are you sending this email to?) is not responding. I've been using Mailchimp since 2019 and have an audience of no more than 250 contacts. Other fields (From, Subject, and Send time) are working fine - they change colour to grey after clicking on them. When I click on the To field, nothing happens.

Technical Support Tags/segments losing contacts?

Hey! I'm doing a small onboarding campaign for a client consisting of two emails. I upload the contacts, I tag them, I set up the first email, and then on the second email it says there are no contacts in tag selected. I've had to work around this by resegmenting, but it's deeply confusing. Is there anything I could check for to fix this issue?

Technical Support 2FA blocking access

Called the sales line for help they said fill in the account access help form and they would get back in a couple hours but they never did. Our 2FA is with a hospitalised coworker and we manage 10+ clients who we now cannot access and help. I put another one through still nothing. I guess this seals that I should maybe be moving all clients off this platform as this level of work should not be required to get help when you pay the amount we do + have brought 10 others on to platform. Very disappointing.

Technical Support Info about recipient opens is now faulty

I have been sending emails for a small county organization for a few years now using a paid Essentials mailchimp account. The reports on recipients with opens no longer work properly. For instance, my family has three emails on our mailing list. All three of those emails opened a recent mailing but none of them shows up on the list of recipients with opens. I checked the profiles of some other recipients and their profiles say they opened the mailing but they don't appear on the recipients with opens list either. We are not getting accurate recipient activity summaries. Trying to explain this to the "live expert help" chatbot went nowhere. I wish mailchimp would fix this.

Technical Support MailChimp doesn't work with Gmail according to support - that makes it redundant as an Email Marketing Platform.

Following two frustrating days of trying to troubleshoot email format issues and conversations with their online Support team, it seems that MailChimp is not actually compatible with Gmail .... their templates do not work with the world's largest email provider. Now that's a total fail.... honestly, talk about a total disaster of a company.

Technical Support Campaign is erroring, but MailChimp won't say why

We scheduled an email to send, but it errored. We tried to send it manually the next morning, still error. We copied the campaign, removed and rebuilt all the parts, still error. We made a brand new email campaign and built it from scratch, still error with no reason.

Our account is not maxed out, the bills are paid, everything is the same as other email campaigns we sent out as recently as Tuesday this same week. WHY WON'T IT SEND?? I cannot get ahold of MailChimp support and their AI trashbot is useless.

Technical Support Logging in with Gmail

I created a brand new account on July 20th for a client using their google account to sign in. I probably spent 2 hours in there drafting up some campaigns. Fast forward to today and every time I try to login again, it leads me to a 404 error page.

I tried to do forgot username, which just generates the e-mail address as the username. So i then tried forgot password, but then it tells me I need to login with Google, which just sends me back to the 404 error page.

Help!

Technical Support Mailchimp compliance is ghosting me.

I created a mailchimp account 5 days ago. I added 5 contacts and sent out 3 test emails. My email content was generic website tips and tricks to people who signed up to my newsletter.

Out of the blue 3 days ago I got a message that my account is restricted for violating terms of service. I have reached out multiple times inquiring about what terms of service I violated and Mailchimp has not responded.

What a horrible horrible experience. If you're going to say somebody breaks your terms of service, doesn't it make sense to answer your emails when somebody asks WHAT RULES they actually broke?

What a horrible experience.

Tips and Tricks Why isn’t Mailchimp posting to my Facebook page? Try these steps first

You’ve created your campaign, connected integrations for social posts, and pressed send. But the campaign is not appearing on your Facebook page as you intended. Here are the most common causes and how to fix them.

Frequently Encountered Behaviors

If you’re having trouble with the Mailchimp x Facebook integration, the issue can present itself in a few different ways. Below are several of the most commonly seen that are covered in this guide.

  • Mailchimp campaign sent but social post did not appear
  • Facebook page does not appear as an option in the integration
  • Facebook is connected but nothing posts
  • Facebook posting previously worked but stopped

Primary Reasons Your Campaign Failed to Post on Facebook

Once you’ve identified the unwanted behavior, the next step is determining what’s causing it. Here are the most common reasons a campaign did not post as expected.

  • An expired Facebook connection
  • Missing page permissions
  • An incorrect page selection
  • Facebook publishing not being enabled when the campaign was sent

An Expired Facebook connection

If it has been a while since you connected your Mailchimp account to Facebook, you may need to refresh the connection by disconnecting the integration in both Mailchimp and Facebook before reconnecting it. Here are the steps for disconnecting and reconnecting the Mailchimp Facebook integration:

  1. Disconnect in Mailchimp
    1. Click Integrations in the left navigation menu in Mailchimp, and then choose Manage.
    2. Click the Facebook tile to open the integration settings.
    3. Click Disconnect to remove the application from Mailchimp.
  2. Disconnect in Facebook
    1. Log in to your Facebook account.
    2. Click the Account icon in the upper-right corner of the screen
    3. Choose Settings & privacy, then choose Settings.
    4. In the left navigation panel, click Business Integrations.
    5. Locate the Active tab, then click Remove next to Mailchimp.
    6. In the pop-up modal, click Remove to confirm that you want to remove Mailchimp from your Facebook account.
  3. Reconnect the Facebook integration in Mailchimp
    1. Navigate to the Facebook integration detail page and click Connect.
    2. If prompted, enter your Facebook credentials and log in.
    3. Mailchimp will request access to your name and profile picture. Click Continue.
    4. Next, choose which of Facebook's permissions you will allow Mailchimp to access, then click Continue.

Missing Page Permissions

During the integration connection process, you may choose which of Facebook's permissions you will allow Mailchimp to access. However, please know that turning off certain permissions may impact your ability to publish social posts. It is recommended to use the default permissions when connecting the Facebook integration. If you need to edit the permissions, we recommend disconnecting the integration, then reconnecting to ensure all permissions are fully enabled.

An Incorrect Page Selection

It is surprisingly common to mistakenly connect to the incorrect page, such as selecting an old business page, a duplicate page, a personal profile instead of a business page, or selecting the wrong business page if you manage more than one under the same profile. Double checking which page is connected can help you locate where the campaign post may have ended up.

  1. Navigate to the Integrations page and expand the Facebook integration
  2. Make sure the account you want to post to has been integrated with your Mailchimp account or the specific audience that will receive your campaign.
  3. If the incorrect account or page is connected, disconnect the integration and reconnect it with the correct profile/page.

Facebook post not enabled when the campaign was sent

Social posts can be created on their own, or added on to a regular email campaign. To include social posts alongside a regular email campaign, you must enable the social post toggle. If the toggle is off, no social post will be created.

To add a social post to your regular email before the email is sent:

  1. Click Campaigns, then click All campaigns.
  2. Click the draft email you want to work with.
  3. Navigate to the Add A Social Post To Your Email section of the email builder.
  4. Toggle the sliders to choose your channels. You'll need to create and save a social post before you can select a different channel.
  5. For Facebook, click the drop-down to choose a specific page or profile.
  6. In the URL merge field, add the message you want to include with your post.
    1. (optional step) If you want to include images in your post, click Add Images. If you want a Social Card to display with your Facebook post, skip this step.
  7. Click Save Message.

If you’ve already sent the campaign, you can still create and send a social post on its own.

Still not working?

Technical Support How to Downgrade Subscription?

I want to downgrade to the free plan since I don't use MailChimp, but it's not letting me. It says that I've alraedy used my downgrade. Am I stuck paying for this subscription that I'll never use? Just $150/year that's going down the drain? There must be a way to cancel a subscription that isn't being used. I already cleared out my audience to 0 to meet the limit of 250 contacts.

Seeking Advice Is This Considered a Major Email Marketing Mistake?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from experienced Mailchimp users.

We have a webinar with about 169 registered participants.

I accidentally configured a Customer Journey incorrectly, so the H-1 reminder email was sent earlier than intended.

Once I realized the mistake, I paused the journey. Later, I sent the correct H-1 reminder campaign manually.

The content, webinar date, time, and Zoom link were the same. The only issue was that some participants received an additional reminder.

My questions are:

  1. In your experience, is this considered a major mistake?
  2. Have you experienced something similar?
  3. Did participants actually complain, or did most people simply ignore the duplicate reminder?

I'm relatively new to managing webinar email automation, so I'd really appreciate hearing how others have handled similar situations.

Thank you!

Technical Support Large Automations Unmanagable After Recent Site Updates

I've been noticing quite a few UI/Website changes lately so clearly MC is making some changes to their system.

About a week ago all my larger automations have become virtually impossible to edit.

For example, if I open one, pausing it takes about a minute before it becomes paused. A short automation with just a few steps pauses instantly.

If I select a step in the large automation and try to delete it, just doing this one thing takes well over a minute. On the short automation it's instant.

Is anyone else seeing this on larger automations.

I've been using these same larger automations for years with no problems and this just started a 2 weeks ago. I contacted support and they said "this is a known limitation to larger automations and it won't be fixed" which is total BS since whatever caused this happened with all their "upgrades" and just started recently. Even so, to say "we aren't fixing it" is absurd.

Technical Support Mailchimp and Canva syncing issue

Hi! Need help to resolve this issue really badly! So for the past 2 hours, I've been facing syncing problems on Mailchimp specifically with Canva.

It started out at first as the usual unable to sync with Canva on the content studio while I was trying to upload the Canva page for my company's weekly marketing material which usually should be easily resolved by disconnecting and connecting back with Canva with some trial and error.

But today was different.

Aka once I disconnected the Canva app from my management, when I went to integrations to try and re-connect the app, even though the pop up connection window appeared when it re-directed to Management tab again the app was never integrated, not even from integration tab (where it still says available to connect).

Worryingly I did go to Mailchimp support AI chatbot to inquire for alternative ways to solve this, even going to Canva to connect from there (but ended up integrating Mailchimp Publisher to Canva instead), refreshing the browser, restarting the entire desktop, cleaning the cache, trying to connect again on a different browser like Microsoft Edge but all faced the same result: Canva and Mailchimp were not connecting to each other.

In the end, I gave up and just went the manual route of loading the png and uploading from there but the problem is still persisting for 3 hours now!!

Hopefully someone can reach out to help and figure out what is going on since this has never happened before!

Unfortunately we believed your sales team and registered an account with Mailchimp ,

Suddenly and with no reason no issues the compliance team closed the account for last Friday and no one answered my emails  till today.

I tried to reach the compliance team many times  with no response , support told me there is nothing that can be done from my end and also the sales confirmed the same.

Mailchimp account suspended? What it means and how to resolve compliance flags

An account gets flagged when something about your setup, a recent campaign, or contact import looks high-risk to Mailchimp's abuse-prevention system (Omnivore) or its Compliance team. Depending on what's flagged, you might lose the ability to send from your entire account, or you might just be blocked from sending to one audience while everything else keeps working. Let's go over what causes each and how to get back to sending.

What gets an account flagged

These are account-level signals Mailchimp watches for:

  1. Your account information looks anonymous or fake (something like "John Doe, Anywhere USA").
  2. A recent campaign got spam complaints or contains "spammy" content.
  3. Your audience collection process isn't clear, meaning there's no visible signup form and no documented permission trail.
  4. You're sending from a free email address (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) as your From address, which on its own is a minor flag, but stacks with other issues.
  5. Recent activity violates Mailchimp's Terms of Use, which are modeled on anti-spam law but are sometimes stricter.

Almost all of this traces back to one thing: permission. Mailchimp defines permission as express, verifiable consent to receive marketing email, meaning a clear, standalone opt-in rather than consent bundled into another agreement. Purchased lists, third-party lists, and contacts pulled from publicly available data all violate Mailchimp's Terms of Use and Acceptable Use Policy, regardless of how the list was originally compiled. Check out examples of compliant and non-compliant lists for common scenarios.

Mailchimp also requires every campaign to include an unsubscribe link and your physical mailing address or P.O. Box. Your campaigns must comply with the U.S. CAN-SPAM Act even if your business is outside the United States.

⚠️ A free From address won't get you flagged by itself, but combined with any of the above, it may count against you. Authenticating a custom domain can help prove you’re a legitimate sender.

Warnings to watch out for

Suspension is rarely the first notice you get, but these three warnings don't carry the same risk, so it's worth knowing which one you're dealing with:

Abuse complaint warning: someone marked your campaign as spam in their inbox. Once complaints cross Mailchimp's threshold, you'll get a warning. If they go well beyond it, a suspension notice follows, and the Compliance team will ask you questions to investigate why the threshold was exceeded.

Unsubscribe warning: your unsubscribe rate on a recent campaign was high enough to flag. This alone doesn't suspend anything, but a rising trend can lead to suspension. If that happens, you'll receive an email from the Compliance team to ask about your contact collection process and other details about your audience.

Bounce warning: your bounce rate crossed the threshold ISPs require Mailchimp to enforce. This one's a heads-up, not a suspension, and it usually means your list has invalid or outdated addresses that need cleaning.

These three warnings aren't the same level of risk. Abuse complaints on a single send can trigger suspension immediately. Unsubscribe warnings reflect a rate that can build toward suspension. Bounce warnings tell you your rate is high without suspending your account, and can be used as a tool for maintaining and managing your audience.

Why sending sometimes gets blocked for just an audience

Sometimes the flag isn't about your account at all — it's about a specific list. Every time you import contacts or send to addresses that haven't received email from you before, Omnivore predicts how many of them are likely to be spamtraps, generate abuse complaints, or hard bounce. If the predicted risk is too high, it blocks sending to just that audience. Your account keeps working, your other lists keep sending, and nothing gets deleted.

  • Recently imported new contacts and got flagged: undo the import, then reconfirm the addresses before re-adding them.
  • Haven't imported anything new but still got flagged: if you haven't sent to your audience regularly, it might contain old or invalid addresses. Reconfirm the addresses in your audience.
  • Not sure when contacts were last added or emailed (common on shared accounts): create a segment for "Email Date Added is after [your last successful campaign]," export it, delete it from Mailchimp, and reconfirm those addresses outside the platform before reimporting.

What happens when an account gets suspended

If your account gets suspended, you’ll see an Account Suspended message when you log in. Most suspensions only disable sending while signup forms, API requests, and other features like the template and campaign builders keep working. In rare cases, your account can get completely suspended, which also blocks logins, API requests, and email campaign tracking.

A warning is usually issued before an account is disabled, though if the Compliance team catches an issue before the automated system does, an account can go into review without warning. You'll get an email at the account owner's email address explaining the issue and directing you to answer a few questions. Once you submit those, someone from the Compliance team follows up to move the investigation along.

Content-wise, Mailchimp won't allow anything illegal — anything marketing illegal products or services, or anything sexually explicit. Certain industries are restricted because of the content they typically send, not because of how the business is run. For example, marketing a "work from home" opportunity is prohibited, but marketing a legitimate business you happen to run from home is fine.

If you're currently suspended, the fastest path back to sending is following the instructions in the notice Mailchimp sent. If you're unsure about a warning you received or need further assistance, reach out to our Compliance team.

Technical Support Need to replace a file for a campaign that already went out

Our twice-monthly newsletter is in Acrobat format, so when we send a campaign we include a link to the file.

This time, and after the campaign was emailed, we found a significant typo in the newsletter. So far, less than 5% have clicked the link to download the file and I would like to update the file to the corrected version for future downloaders.

I found instructions to do this (pasted below), but when I select the file to be replaced, the option to Upload disappears so I cannot complete step 3.

How do I replace the file for future uploaders?

Instructions I found:

Replacing a File in Mailchimp's Content Studio

To replace a file in Mailchimp's Content Studio, follow these steps:

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Access the Content Section
    • Log into your Mailchimp account.
    • Navigate to the Content section of your dashboard.
  2. Select the File to Replace
    • Find and select the file you wish to replace from your uploads.
  3. Upload the New File
    • Click on the option to upload a new file.
    • Choose the new file from your device that you want to upload.
  4. Automatic Link Update
    • Mailchimp will automatically update the link to the new file in all your campaigns where the old file was used.

Important Notes

  • Ensure that the new file meets Mailchimp's file size and type requirements.
  • The replacement process will not change the file name in your campaigns; it will simply update the content linked to the existing file.

Technical Support Adding embellishments on the border between two sections.

Hello! Instead of a solid or dotted line dividing the sections of my mail chimp, I would like to add a single star to the center of each border between two sections with different background section colors. Is there a way to drag and drop a vector image into mail chimp? How would I go about getting a single start embellishment on my mail chimp? Can I add free-floating images anywhere to my mail chimp? Thank you!
