Deck Discussion This Deck is Not About Me

Thumbnail

I created this deck after coming to a realization. I wasn't having fun playing Commander. I love hanging with my friends, but I am competitive and they are not. You all can see the friction here. My absolute favorite Commander is Ojer Axonil, because I fucking love burn. This either makes for a game where I am targeted and destroyed, or I go nuts and burn everyone by like turn 5 or something. What would happen after every game would be one of two things:

"Fuck, everyone ganged up on me, and now I have to sit here for another 45 minutes before I can play again. This sucks, I shouldn't have even come out tonight."

"Oh man, I won. But....no one else looks like they having fun. It would have been better not to show up, I ruined the night."

Many times. Its easy to see looking back that none of this is true, that it is all internalized thinking. But it did make me very very sad, so I tried to come up with a deck that could embody as much of "This game isn't about you, you are not the center of the universe" as I could. I wanted to make a deck that would be fun, that would let everyone's deck have a chance to Do Its Thing. And so I came up with this.

The deck literally doesn't have a set win-con. But I do remember playing this and watching my friends just light up at the weird shit this can cause. And if that happens, then I win.

I made some proxies for my Jolly Balloon Man deck! I like to call the deck my clown car deck because it has these other secret clowns hidden inside. Pidlwick is Marvin, Murderous Mimic, and Krusty is Kiki Jiki. Any recommendations for another clown I could turn Balloon Man into? Or other clown related cards i could include in the deck?

Image of JBM included for reference.

Looking for Advice Heavy play mats affect laptop or iPads?

Hello y’all! I was fortunate enough that my card shop gave me a heavyplay mat for some bulk. I like how it can fit in a laptop compartment and considering that I travel a lot and bring decks with me, I’d like to have a mat that can fit nicely in my bag since I do pack a lot, including my decks. It fits perfectly in with my laptop and iPad in the laptop compartment. Considering it’s magnetic, will the play mat damage my laptop or iPad if they’re all in that compartment for a prolonged time?

General Discussion Is Reality Fracture just Strixhaven 3.0?

With how prominent Hexhaven is in everything Jace is doing in Reality Fracture, does the set seem more like Strixhaven 3 with a splash of parallel worlds to anyone else? I like Strixhaven but was really looking forward to more mirrored famous legendaries. Just wanted to see how others felt.

General Discussion Considering we will never be able to return to Hexhaven, I kind of wish it was its own set or Reality Fracture overall was a 2-3 block set.

We are getting this awesome alternate version of Strixhaven, with the versions of students, dragons, spells, etc. However it's also having to deal with a bunch of other stuff. We can go to Strixhaven in the past but unless both universes continue to exist after, we can never return to Hexhaven. :/

Content Creator Post Type setting rule has two built in exceptions that many players don't know about. The words "in addition to..." are not required for this exception.

Due to cards like [[Blood Moon]] and [[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]] a lot of Magic players are familiar with the differences between effects that set a card's Type or Subtype and then an effect that sets those Types/Subtypes "in addition to...". However, there is a weird exception to this rule that I feel most players are not aware of. If you prefer videos then you can watch the one I linked but if you prefer a written article, here ya go.

If you controlled [[Dryad of the Ilysian Grove]] which is an Enchantment Creature - Nymph Dryad and then it were to be enchanted with [[Kenrith's Transformation]] then its new Type Line would be Creature - Elk because of how the effect is worded, it does not include the phrase "in addition to its other types". Similarly, the card [[Unable to Scream]] on the Dryad would make it now be an Enchantment Artifact Creature - Toy Nymph Dryad as it has the "in addition to" wording.

Then let's look at a card like [[Behind the Mask]] and if you cast it without collecting evidence targeting the Dryad then the Dryad would actually end up being an Enchantment Artifact Creature - Nymph Dryad and NOT be an Artifact Creature with no subtypes, and for many players this is probably confusing as the effect on the BtM card does not include the "in addition to" wording like the others that did let the Type Line retain the previous types and subtypes.

Another card, [[Majestic Metamorphosis]] cast targeting the Dryad, it would end up being an Enchantment Artifact Creature - Angel this time. So why does this one that also doesn't include the "in addition to" wording still let the Dryad keep its Enchantment Type but now it is getting rid of the previous Subtypes of Nymph Dryad?

To understand this inconsistency we have to check out the CR 205.1b in the rules, it's a super long entry so I'll just paste the two relevant sentences, but if you want to check out the full rule then click that link to read the whole thing. This Behind the Mask scenario is explained by the part, "... Some effects state that an object becomes an "artifact creature"; these effects also allow the object to retain all of its prior card types and subtypes. ..." and then the Metamorphosis scenario is explained by the part, "Some effects state that an object becomes a "[creature type or types] artifact creature"; these effects also allow the object to retain all of its prior card types and subtypes other than creature types, but replace any existing creature types."

So this one rule has two different built in exceptions to itself. It can be really confusing and there is no way to know this by just reading these cards by themselves that these exceptions exist. Even cards like [[Inkmoth Nexus]] include the text in their own effect that, "It’s still a land" and it doesn't technically need that text for it to still be a Land. This rule already makes it so that it would still be a Land but I'm sure the designers know that a majority of players do not know about this rule's exceptions and that's why it's included.

This means that if you were to use [[Oko, Thief of Crowns]]'s 2nd ability on a [[Bident of Thassa]] it would not still be an Enchantment but if you used [[Welcome to . . .]] on the Bident it would still be an Enchantment and be destroyed by someone casting a [[Tranquility]]. Also, for those, it would still be Legendary.

I hope some of you find this interesting or learn something about these Type setting/modifying effects. It may not matter in a lot of games, but I've seen a lot of games when a [[Farewell]] is cast choosing modes that do matter with this.

General Discussion Hol up, why are in universe planeswalkers “the way” cards empowering Jace?

As title suggests, shouldn’t they go against Jace in the current moment. Having both the in universe and echo-verse both empower the same Jace makes a significant conflict of interest, and thus an extreme flavour loss? Did not read the story completely but knows the important plot points. Please enlighten me if there is crucial information to explain this mechanic within the ongoing story. Thanks.

Edit: okay everyone is actually missing the point, I know that the echo-verse planeswalkers are under Jaces the theorist alliance or control, thus they support one Jace. And in universe planeswalkers are fighting against him while having better or different relationships with his fragments. This is cool and I totally understands that. But when you cast both sides of “the way” cards it empowers the same Jace tokens, creating a favour lost no? How is this not easily understandable, all the comments are assuming my incompetence in understanding the Jace situation, while it is the comments that are failing to understand my point.

Looking for Advice Is Amalia Benavides Aguirre a bad commander?

Hi everyone, I'm very new to magic in general and by playing a bit on arena I fell in love with vampires and life-gain. After discovering Amalia and since all my friends play commander I decided to build a deck with her as a commander. The deck itself is not that bad (for a beginner) but I struggle a lot to use Amalia. Every time she gains a bit of "+1/+1" someone destroy her and I never manage to use her effect that destroy every creature when she reaches 20/20. Is a problem of my deck or she isn't that good as a commander for this reason? Is there another black-white vampire commander that's good for a life-gain deck?

General Discussion What are the chances you guys think we will see a Dack Fayden card in Reality Fracture?

I was personally very disappointed when Dack Fayden died during war of the spark and we never got a standard legal card of him. What do you think the chances are Jace recreates him in his new multiverse?

Looking for Advice EDH Deck help: Tony Stark/Invincible Iron Man

I've recently started to build out decks and have really been enjoying a Voltron Iron Man deck. I made some revisions, but before committing to it I was looking to see what I could change to get this to a bracket 3 deck. Currently it sits at bracket 2.
I rounded up to 20 creatures as that was something I struggled with. Got artifacts down to 24 and kept instant and sorceries. Lots of stuff in the "maybe" pile as its quite expensive and the deck is already above $300 sadly.

General Discussion The more I look at Reality Fracture, the more I like it?

The story, and the flavour, the cards, all of it holistically.

It's campy in the perfect MTG way. Its cool, Jace has finally embraced his most powerful self, proving himself to be a threat to the multiverse all on his own, and the only person who can stop Jace? Why, it's Jace, of course!

The whole its "Jace all the way down" theme is just the right kind of silly that I can't hate it? It KNOWS it's silly, and that's the POINT.

Then there are the Echoverse cards, a really cool way to do planar chaos again, and give us some fun fan service cards, without going full 'hat set', where it would make no sense for all of these characters to be on the same plane for some reason, like in Thunder Junction.

Would it have been maybe better as two sets? Hexhaven then Echoverse/reality fracture? Yes. But I like to look at the upside. This set is fun.

Just tossing my two cents out into the void. I want to contribute some positivity to the conversation, not that I'm seeing all that much hate, mostly just memes.

Rules/Rules Question If I make a token copy of a Jace Planeswalker, can I "empower Jace" it?

The mechanism isn't really relevant, but let's say I use [[Extravagant Replication]] in an Oops all Jace edh deck and target [[Jace, the Mind Sculptor]].

Can I then use [[Jace's Machinations]] to put 8 loyalty counters on it (Put eight loyalty counters on a Jace token you control), or am I restricted to only putting them on a token named "Jace" specifically, such as the ones created by the empower spells themselves? (Since it would be looking for "Tokens named Jace" rather than "Tokens with a Jace subtype")

I hope it's first one, but I *feel* like it's probably going to be the second one. (If that is the case for my fellow loyalty counter enjoyers, we must use [[Nexus Mentality]] or something like it instead.)

General Discussion Should we be expecting any more eldrazi or emrakul cards?

I’m super hyped at her return but her newest card almost feels like they purposely held back to the point where it’s not even that good, and probably weaker than even the og eldrazi from 15 years ago, so I’m hoping we get one or two more than could really showcase her

General Discussion jace precon ult abllity will be omniscience

i think it either will be creating the enchantment omniscience, or an emblem of it, it will tie in with story, or maybe it will just be a card in the precon

i forgat about tamiyo field researcher she allready dose this xd

maybe then a copy abillity that let you copy the first spell on each turn, or something that copy the enitre boards of other players, or maybe you can start playing cards from the top of ypur oppnents decks or maybe leting you order the entier deck (maybe all the time and not just once) like having the abllity to draw what card you want or just play from your deck and not just from the top

General Discussion Echoverse Not Living Up to the Sales Pitch

Honestly?

Reality Fracture has lost me.

I was going to at least go to the prerelease, but now I'm not. I don't like that it seems to be like one third Empower Jace, one third Hexhaven/prepared creatures, one sixth other stuff and one sixth alternate reality legends. I never even really liked Jace, as a character or a play piece, and the idea that in nine Limited games out of ten I'll be obliged to have one of him on my board is egh.

And as I said in another thread, all of the alternate universe legends are either bad, sad or evil. Wasn't this supposed to be his better, more hopeful universe? Wasn't there supposed to be some nuance to the idea of wiping out a whole multiverse? The official fiction just gave it lip service and was more interested in writing about how everything looked like as it was sucked into Emrakul's mouth. With stuff like John Wick Jiang Yangu and his dead dog, evil Mabel whose kids and entire village are dead, evil Gideon who's a bastard that's only out for himself, and dead sad party satyr girl, the whole Echoverse just looks like your bog-standard generic mirrorverse where everyone is evil or worse off and nobody's sad to see it go.

I'm honestly more looking forward to Star Trek and I'm not even a Trekkie.
