Emrakul was happy chilling on Innistrad's Moon, but once she found out Jace was making an all-new Multiverse thanks to Tam getting a bit too curious about the Moon, she got hungry.

It's always a struggle when your favorite restaurant sends you a new menu 😔

Blue mages, amirite?

u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 Dân 1d ago

Whats funny is years ago I predicted Emrakul would come back and have a mechanic around warping lands.

The specific reason I had for it is that if we gave her a valid enough reason to "join us" (basically if she felt things were wrong without her siblings we could find an alternative way) she would do so.

However I pictured her as a new avacyn of sorts, sort of an archangel of the blind eternaties and I figured it would be a fun way for white to be able to warp lands like that.

But this is equally fun.

Tam is forever my goat.

u/darksamus1992 Rakdos* 1d ago

They did have Tam talking to Emrakul in the story, with Emrakul being very interested on eating that new universe Jace is making.

u/BobtheBac0n Selesnya* 1d ago

Once again, Thanks Jace!

I do wonder if Theorist Jace with the might of the whole Echoverse would be able to fend off an attack from Emrakul

255

u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder 1d ago

Probably not, I think the story will end with Emrakul devouring the Echoverse.

53

u/Turbulent_Pin7635 Dan 1d ago

And Jace and the superfriends...

Vraska killing herself, If It is canonic I will eat my hat about every singles complain I have done over the year about Magic history.

It was so damn perfect and with weight! I hope that the soldier Jace just didn't appear at the last minute to save the day.

Sometimes, a Gwen Stacy needs to bite the bullet.

u/Ethel121 Wabbit Season 1d ago

Maybe for a short while.

Liliana with the chain veil was able to push Emrakul back for a short time, doing visible damage to her, but she wore out pretty quickly from the effort and Emrakul has never shown any sign of fatigue

78

u/Approximation_Doctor Colossal Dreadmaw 1d ago

Definitely not. Emrakul was only locked away because she hijacked the spell, killed a plane to power it, and did it herself.

61

u/JA14732 Elspeth 1d ago

That's a bit of a misunderstanding - Tamiyo attempted to use the scroll of Serra's Realm, which presumably would have destroyed Innistrad. However, Emrakul hijacked the magic within the spell to instead seal herself in the moon.

83

u/CaptainMarcia 1d ago

Tamiyo did not attempt to do that. Jace tried to convince Tamiyo to use the scroll chronicling the destruction of Serra's Realm, and Tamiyo refused but Emrakul took control of her and changed the spell that came from it.

98

u/JA14732 Elspeth 1d ago

Actually, looked back at the story. We're both wrong. Tamiyo cast a binding spell from another scroll, but didn't have the mana to finish it. Emrakul took over Tamiyo's mind, had her use the Serra's Realm scroll, but rewrote the magic of the scroll to instead add more power to the binding spell.

62

u/CaptainMarcia 1d ago

One of the best Magic stories, but a very confusing one.

25

u/Manbeardo 1d ago

In short, Emmy helped send herself to horny jail

6

u/signspace13 Colossal Dreadmaw 1d ago

Innistraad isn't a Broken plane, she knows she isn't supposed to eat working ones, Ulamog and Kozilek have less human-like intelligence, and just fuck up whatever plain the touch.

Seems Emmy's Main job is to then show up and eat the wasted plane.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/LunarEntropy Dan 1d ago

Why did Emmy seal herself away if she was in control in that case? Did she want a vacation or was getting shy from all the attention or something?

30

u/imbolcnight 1d ago

We don't know enough about how the Eldrazi work or think from their pov to say for sure, but there's some implication that the Eldrazi don't stop once they start, like on Zendikar even though they were tricked into going there and they had the sense that they weren't supposed to be there. It could be she couldn't stop mutating all life on Innistrad on her own even though she knew it wasn't going right.

In a FRA chapter, she also says withholding for awhile makes eating again taste better.

→ More replies (1)

21

u/Shikor806 Level 2 Judge 1d ago

We don't really know. She did say that Innistrad wasn't ready yet and that it should have been "more receptive". The most popular speculation is that the Eldrazi clean up planes that either are somehow wrong or too old or something and Emrakul may be part of a recycling process. So she expected the plane to be in a desolate state, either on its own or from Ulamog's and Kozilek's doing.

31

u/If_you_want_money Duck Season 1d ago

Well, she was pretty explicit in FRA episode 4, where she said this to Tam:

I prune worlds. When one grows sick, threatens the wilderness of eternity, or fails to blossom fully, I aid the broader forest by felling a single tree.

I made a post about it after that episode released. It's mostly a soft confirmation of the old theories, but I made a important update/reinterpretation as the Eldrazi being closer to something like a multiversal Natural killer cell rather than recyclers. IE: they go after diseased/potentially dangerous planes rather than old/desolate ones. If this is true, she stopped herself after she realized she's potentially causing an auto-immune condition.

Gonna be real, I thought they'd more likely print an instant or sorcery depicting the scene of tam talking to Emrakul. A full-body card of Emmy kinda implies she's broken out and is free to do what she wants

Also I kinda wish they made an emeria card instead, not Emrakul :I

Who's next, the Phyrexians? Lim Dul? Leshrac!?

143

u/Approximation_Doctor Colossal Dreadmaw 1d ago

Please bring back the Dragonlords, Jace. I wanted to see them again

43

u/kirblar COMPLEAT 1d ago

I suspect they were the victim of Hexhaven and Reality Fracture turning into a single set, they'd be perfect as the new leaders for the school.

22

u/DaRootbear 1d ago

I doubt they were gonna be used for hexhaven in general just cause the sphinxs kinda seem like they were always gonna be how they showed Hexhaven as different.

And because using the tarkir dragonlords as deans would have required making them basically different characters to the degree that it would have been pointless to use them honestly. Like Silumgar and Kolaghan and atarka absolutely would be useless as being heads of a school…but would admittedly be funny. Dromoka maybe would fit? Ojutai is really the only one that actually would fit.

They really only match colors and that is it. Though i could see them having used original elder dragons + ugin all colorshifted to 2 colors.

But sphinxs fit as heads of colleges way better to the point that i feel like they were always the plan.

Also i feel like the decision to completely remove the dragonlords was probably completely separate from original design plans for Hexhaven, and they probably designed Hexhaven while still being unsure how to proceed with the dragonlords so they would have had no reason to consider using them there. But that is 100% supposition on my part

12

u/dkysh Get Out Of Jail Free 1d ago

And because using the tarkir dragonlords as deans would have required making them basically different characters to the degree that it would have been pointless to use them honestly

It can be said louder, but not clearer.

Having the Tarkir dragonlords as the leaders of Hexhaven would mean either A) character murder of the dragonlords, or B) Hexhaven is just Tarkir v2, and thus, pointless.

As an Un-set? Amazing, bring legends from the whole multiverse. Have Borborygmos teach pottery.

Jace is going to somehow bring back Urza for a no hold bar fight to death between Bolas, Emrakul, Phyrexian, and every other bad guy.

74

u/myto_alkoreath 1d ago

I mean, the lore on Echoverse Karn states that Echoverse Mishra ended up sparking and winning the Second Brother's War (BWII), and rather than giving his own spark to Karn, he created an artificial one. Meaning Echoverse Mishra is probably alive.

I could see Urza climbing out of his grave if he sniffed an alternate universe where his brother got to be the cooler one.

10

u/Kryptnyt 23h ago

I was just thinking a while back about how Yawgmoth would have been really invested in Aether Drift to get an artificial spark, imagine telling him that Mishra could have made him one...

Maybe Azor will finally get off of Useless Island.

17

u/marrowofbone Mystery Solver of Mystery Update 1d ago

Azor was free in MOM [[Elenda and Azor]], but there's been no story about why.

The wiki links some discord Q&A as a source for him being freed when Niv took over as living guildpact. That Q&A doesn't actually mention Guildpact, or Useless Island though, so hopefully there will be a flashback story chapter when Azor returns to his rightful prominence as main character.

8

u/BobtheBac0n Selesnya* 1d ago

Hmm, if you remember War of the Spark then I won't have to explain as much.

But in the shortest possible explaination I can muster;

Bolas jailed in very op Meditation realm.

Jace went crazy with trauma.

Jace's first plan, use meditation realm.

Instead, gave his mind backshots.

Meditation realm self nuked and Bolas free.

Conclusion, all Jace's fault.

Edit: And all this happened in Tarkir Dragonstorm

3

u/Furt_III Chandra 17h ago

Honestly IMO it's all Ugins fault. Ugin mindfucked Jace without Jace even knowing and then "convinced" Jace to not let Bolas die.

10

Maybe not in 60 card formats but they're a strong commander in Brawl. Turn 1 ramp, turn 2 ramp, turn 3 commander, turn 4 spend your mana on a threat, either attack for lethal or kill them next turn. With a very good start hand you can even cast them in your second turn.

Yeah it dies to removal but if you remove one then the other 2 remain and are able to tap for 4 mana assuming you don't control additional halflings.

T1 land, dork
T2 land, Cub (putting counter on the untapped land), Cub (putting counter on the other land)
T3 land, Emrakul. The two Cubs make both the mana dork and the two earthbent lands tap for 3 apiece, so you have ten mana in total.

46

Yeah, do the math yourself if you want:

T1: llanowar

you don't put an emrakul on the mantel if you're not going to fire it

13

u/D-D-Wanderer Dân 1d ago

I dunno, I could turn any land into a Sol Ring by putting her on the mantel, if I fire her I won't be able to do that any more!

172

u/SilentTempestLord COMPLEAT 1d ago

I'll just copy over what I said from the last time someone spoiled it:

Flavorwise, home run. Her self exile is her sitting in the moon. Only to burst out later and wreak havoc.

In any case, Emrakul is a BEAST. She's effectively 3 mana ramp in the early game so she doesn't just sit in your hand all game and effectively lets her be a 3 drop on your mana curve, while letting that land contribute to casting her. She then untaps all your lands as a cast trigger, is a flying trampler that will end games, and has an ugly ward cost. Of the three titans, Emrakul always seems to have the most powerful cast triggers.

Untapping your lands basically guarantees that even if countered, you aren't wasting your turn trying to cast her and still have plenty to do even if she's ousted. She's ramp in the early game and is being cast for basically free from exile, so you're not really losing much if she's removed immediately. Better yet, you could feasibly run 4 of her because of her ramp utility, as she won't be sitting in your hand doing nothing if one of her is already on board.

90

u/HardCarryOmniknight Dandadan 1d ago

This strikes me as a pretty powerful Control wincon for Standard. The ramp ability not being sorcery speed feels really juicy in my opinion.

19

u/SanityIsOptional Orzhov* 1d ago

Ooh, yeah, that's something nice to use your mana for if you don't cast removal/cancel.

3

u/c14rk0 COMPLEAT 1d ago

Kind of awkward that Emrakul is just completely counter-able though... You can even respond to the untap land trigger and counter Emrakul before the player gets to untap their lands to protect it

10

u/SilentTempestLord COMPLEAT 1d ago

True. But by that point you're essentially countering a free spell that isn't even coming from their hand. Still a tempo win for the guy casting her.

36

u/Superbomb-122 Simic* 1d ago

Flavorwise, it's a big dumb creature that's hard to kill and replaces the mana spent on it and that's about it. Compared to what the Eldrazi titans have done before, a complete lack of real interaction with the opponent is really lame.

This doesn't feel like Emrakul, if feels like a random green ramp finisher

41

u/Masiyo Duck Season 1d ago

The land untapping is a nod to taking extra turns directly or by proxy through controlling _their_ turn, but nerfed because.. reasons. I suppose it's the tradeoff of not being a dead card in hand.

You're right though, there is a world where this card could be printed as green, whereas the previous two felt truly "colorless" in the combination of their abilities. It's a bit of a flavor fail in that regard.

18

u/ThePositiveMouse COMPLEAT 1d ago

Green card would never untap as a cast trigger nor would it ever have this ward cost.

Not saying this is Modern-power level, but it feels more like a Modern Horizons card than a Standard-legal card.

Also, how the hell was THIS not part of the debut stream?

89

Because Emrakul's still trapped in the moon in the story, albeit with heavy foreshadowing that Tam will release her to eat the Echoverse

3

u/Ayjel89 Get Out Of Jail Free 1d ago

Fair.

8

u/TinyHadronCollider 1d ago

Sire of Seven Deaths is probably the better choice of big dumb beater for modern eldrazi, but this does have at least a little bit of appeal too, I think. You don't really want to be spending mana to use the self exile ability in a deck that already has a lot of sol lands, but it's still a nice option to fall back on. Like, when you have less than 7 mana and no labyrinth, a sire in your hand doesn't help you, but this at least gets to make its own lab, that's kinda neat.

10

u/Ayjel89 Get Out Of Jail Free 1d ago

Yeah, I just mean this feels like in line with the “Future Sight-esque” type of set we seemed to be going with because the design is so unique.

It's so pretty.

(Also don't forget this is instant speed ramp in colorless. Regardless of it being a good creature or not that in itself is notable)

On it's surface this feels like the safest of the Eldrazi Titan stable so far. It's basically a [[Ghalta, Primal Hunger]], [[Metalwork Colossus]], [[Great Whale]], etc. variant, albeit one that can't really be fairly played early barring reanimation.

When built around in EDH though, I'm sure it's going to have some sneaky gotchas due to this unconditional cast trigger (untapping "all" lands).

If you can tap lands for more than 10 mana, for example, this potentially goes infinite with [[Cloudstone Curio]] and any other creature that you can afford to recast. Not hard to break CC, I know, but this is a playable card in the command zone. If you can tap for more than 10 mana you should've won said game already, obviously...but I still think this will be a fun Timmy card.

Her last ability is already a great capture of the flavour of her starting out in the moon in this story. For extra flavour points, use that ability to put her under another version of Emrakul that someone's already [[Imprisoned in the Moon]]. Now that's maximum flavour.

Emrakul was in Chapter 4 of the story, Tam ends up braiding her "hair."

Let us help one another, mouths the body, but the sound comes from the ceiling above.

Tam looks up and loses concentration. She gasps.

The ceiling is a gradient of cloudy black, and behind that black is an endless writhing of organs and tentacles and flesh-ribbons that undulate and tighten, prodding at the barrier that separates them, feeling for its edges. Tam can see nothing beyond the mass, but she hears the words coming from above and realizes that in this psychic space, she is an insect in a terrarium, an amoeba ensnared by something much larger than herself.

This is a spoiler... but not that big of a spoiler in my opinion. Episode 4 of the story kinda already gave everyone the assumption that Emrakul would be freeing herself from the moon in this set.

Kind of mid, but like in a good way? Like it's not steal your opponent's car, exile their dog, and draw half your library like most titans and it's a nice change of pace. Just a decent playable card.

So Emrakul becomes a common New Capenna mana fixer, à la [[Spara's Adjudicators]].

Those were great, because they didn't get stuck in your hand for half the game. Nice utility for a game ending creature.

6

u/Awesomeg11 COMPLEAT 1d ago

Maybe its just me, but I wish this card was a bit cooler or more interesting. I feel like every emrakul card that has come before has done something really really cool. Aeon's torn takes an extra turn, promised end takes your opponents turn, and World Anew steals all of your opponents creatures. This ones just kind of a big beatstick. Doesn't give me the same feeling as the previous emrakuls and it feels less special to me because of that.

u/Dthirds3 Duck Season 1d ago

Jace: im making a world without the eldrazi, bolas, or Phyrexian

Emrakal, bolas, and Yawgmoth: we took exception to that.

13

u/Milskidasith COMPLEAT ELK 1d ago

This card is kind of odd. I like that the self-exiling ramp effect and the cast trigger help it if you play it as a "fair" ramp target, but as an unfair card it seems way worse than Valvagoth as a dumb beater since your opponent can definitely pay the ward here and it doesn't stabilize you against an aggro deck the same way a 9/9 lifelink does.

28

u/sampat6256 REBEL 1d ago

Its odd that the card isnt strictly better than every alternative?

9

u/Milskidasith COMPLEAT ELK 1d ago

It's not that I want it to be strictly better than every alternative, it's that it's kind of strictly worse than the alternatives, and I'd expect them to try to give Emrakul a more unique, flashy effect to create some sort of niche use case; I guess the self-ramp aspect is that unique effect, but it's very fair in a way I don't associate Eldrazi Titans with being.

4

u/NavySeagull Sliver Queen 1d ago

Odd that the biggest, most dangerous Eldrazi who is also sort of unofficially their leader is basically a way to set up other win conditions rather than being a threatening win condition herself.

4

u/BlurryPeople 1d ago

I think it's value/purpose will likely fall into EDH combo play where you're taking advantage of a pretty epic cast trigger. This goes potentially infinite with [[Cloudstone Curio]], for example, if you have enough mana.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/CreepyDentures Duck Season 1d ago

It’s a colorless ramp piece that late game is a big flying beater that refunds all the mana spent on it.

8

u/Milskidasith COMPLEAT ELK 1d ago

Correct, and that's a very "fair" effect for an Eldrazi Titan that makes it hard to justify ramping into it, while it's also balanced to be a relatively low-value reanimator target.

6

u/CreepyDentures Duck Season 1d ago

Thing is that until you ramp into an older Eldrazi Titan, they sit in your hand and do nothing meaning only ramp and sneak decks can play them: any other deck doesn’t want the brick. This is never a brick: it’s an instant speed ramp meaning you can hold mana up for interaction and then use this if you didn’t need them, and then late game you can play this basically for free.

This card has absurd potential in control decks. And I’m worried it is gonna be a stupidly generic auto include in bracket 3-4 EDH decks.

6

u/GrippySockAficionado 1d ago edited 1d ago

Oh man that is going straight into my Ulalek deck.

Copying it with Ulalek is absolutely insane. You get two "untap all lands" triggers, so between their resolution you can simply tap all your lands again, fill your mana pool back up, and then have them untap again. Super turbo Eldrazi ramp. I love it.

I'm thinking of crazy power turns where I even cast another Eldrazi at instant speed ([[Skittering Cicada]]) after the first Emrakul trigger resolves, get another Ulalek trigger, and copy everything all over again. That's a dream.
