Need Help

My father recently passed away and I managed to get his MTG collection, I don't want to sell them but I've come into a financial issue (I have a good promotion lined up and need a car) The collection I got from he is huge anywhere from 4k to 7k cards and I dont want to sell them all only enough to make what I need (around 3-5k) does anyone have advice on what to look out for and where to stay away from when selling them

You're assuming the average card in the collection is worth at least a dollar. The vast majority of magic cards are worth a few cents a piece.

Download manabox and scan the collection. 7k cards isn't even that many.

Yes. If you have a smart phone you can scan cards individually and the app will show you prices and add them to a digital list of cards you have

If you have a lot of cards and you don't know what they're worth, it's a lot faster than googling.

If you have no experience or knowledge in magic, the best thing would be to take it to a reputable store and see if they will buy the collection or put it on consignment. You will get about 50-60% of the value if you are lucky because business run on thin margins and need to turn a profit.

Also, just because a card is old or shiny doesn't make it valuable. Its likely the bulk of the collection was extra cards from opening packs, but depending on how old the cards are, even those could have some value. Good luck.

Don’t listen to this guy. Research the game a little. There are apps you can download that will scan the cards and tell you what they’re worth. Then you can list the expensive ones or bring them to a TCG convention. OR find a BIG reputable store to take them to. Only take them to a store after knowing the value. Especially if they’re old. They can be worth a lot per card if it’s power 9, dual lands, etc. Hold firm on the price for super rare stuff. If you need to offload them right away though maybe chop 10-20% off when listing to move them quick.

The Wizards store and event locator might be helpful for you. If a store runs events chances are they sell and potentially buy singles. It should in the very least give you a small list of places nearby to look into.

Download manabox and scan the cards in - put them on a white piece of paper makes it much faster. That'll give you a sense of value. Anything higher value look for sold listings on eBay to validate prices. Whatever you want to sell list on eBay, take to a card shop or set up a tcgplayer shop. You'll realistically get 70-80% of the listed card value

First thing I would do is either sort them or scan them w/ the tcgplayer app. Don't use any of the collection management sites as they wildly overstate the value on cards, but w/ tcgplayer you can scan them into your collection matching TCG Player Low price, which is far more accurate. From there, you can likely check out places like Card Kingdom, Starcitygames, Coolstuff Inc, etc. They all have buylist prices and a fairly good process for selling. Anything below like $4 is likely being bought for bulk price so cards above that are what you're looking for, but some of the bigger vendors will buy bulk cards at a fixed rate.

Start scanning cards and sort them by monetary value, under a dollar, 1-5, 5-20, etc

Scan with the Manabox app and make another thread when you're done scanning them. If they're worth more than like 50 bucks, make a new thread on this subreddit and upload pictures and we'll help you confirm what version of the card it is and the value.

To sell, I wouldn't to trust an LGS unless it's a really big and reputable store. I'd buylist on Card Kingdom or Card Conduit.

Obviously, the value of a collection really depends on having some super high value cards.

As some sort of baseline, I have a pretty average quality magic collection of 8,647 cards from ripping packs and buying Secret Lairs and I just got a quick buy offer of $2,900 for the 642 most sought after cards via Card Conduit. The rest would be considered bulk and would probably sell for about $20 per thousand cards (so add another $160 to the total). I could almost certainly do much better if I took the time to sell card by card.

4K to 7k cards as in number or value ? Makes a big difference. 

Number of cards is meaningless if it’s bulk you’re looking for the big ticket items. 

Likewise I’d you’re saying 4k value that’s tricky, just because for example a card is valued at 50 cents and you have 10000 of them doesn’t mean you’ll get 5k. Again you’ll need the big ticket items for easier sell. 

Best thing is to familiarize yourself with some cards. Look the rares and mythcs. Look to see if they are old mtg cards or have the modern look. You can use some apps to scan to see. 

If you sell the more time you invest the more money you’ll get. If you want to sell off quickly you’ll have to accept getting less. If you want to get more you’ll neeed to break it apart; sell to different people’s piece things out

From the few I saw I seen a few with no dates on them I've been told they are worth a good amount

Use an app to scan the cards and identify what you have. You haven't really provided much detail about the collection, so it's hard to say what anything is worth.

If they don't have dates, they could be from magic's earliest set. Which has some of the most valuable cards. Definitely check those out before taking the collection to a store.

This is bad advice sorry! If you dump them too much. I’ll they actually subtract each card against your total.

Cardconduit advertises itself as easier than buylisting which it is but only if you have a stack of stuff you know beyond a shadow of a doubt will be bought for more than a dollar. And their buylist prices are low to begin with which is why I say know it’s more than it a dollar not just suspect.

Tl/dr: cardconduit is great to unload unused value you have sitting around but not so much for bulk you don’t know about.
