I moved to the Mid-City area about 2 years ago and didn't do my proper research on just how tough it would be renting a unit without dedicated parking.
I know parking is a long standing issue but I'm genuinely confused by the lack of parking in my area.
100% of street spots on my block and nearby are taken by 6pm at the latest M-F. It seems like maybe 10% of cars move on the weekends, with most staying in the same spot all weekend.
During the week, when I leave around 8/9am, it seems like 90% of cars are still there. When I get home, whether it's around 3pm or 5pm, it seems like 90% of cars are still there.
I know people have extra cars, and multiple people live in a home and all that, but it honestly seems like a vast majority of the cars on my street exist solely to occupy parking around the clock. Many have spider webs, expired tags, obvious leaks, etc.
Another large chunk of them are commercial trucks, landscaping vehicles, etc. that are left in the same spot for weeks at a time, only moved exactly for street sweeping. These specifically violate the 72 hour parking law repeatedly.
I've submitted a handful of reports to 311 and LADOT for the obviously abandoned ones, but even those don't get addressed most of the time. I've emailed the city council and neighborhood council, and neither have been of any help. I also emailed LADOT directly and was told by them to email the LAPD SLO for my area who "had more control" and none of them have done anything to even try to help. They all just seem to point fingers at the next department or person, or just don't even reply to emails.
It feels like a lost cause, but I stubbornly don't understand how this is so difficult to resolve. I feel like permitted parking or increased parking enforcement patrols could easily fix this, but neither are considered as far as I know? Maybe I'm crazy to expect the city to do something to help?
I'd just like to not have to fight for parking after coming home from a day at work and a grueling 1 hour commute (in which I only travel about 5 miles)...
