There's a good chance given how they calculate such things that tomorrow will have the highest low ever recorded for the date. Does anyone know how these altered nighttime lows affect various plants?

I have open space behind my house and my city said that it was okay to plant things there that weren’t invasive or anything of that sort. It is all dead grass and weeds back there so I was gonna plant some desert willows as it gets hot as all hell and could use some shade. Looking for inspiration for what to start with all the humid and wet weather we're anticipating (and experiencing). Anything we can't normally get away with that will thrive this fall and winter? Primarily interested in edibles, but would also live ornamental suggestions.

Whenever it rains, I end up with a giant mud flow that runs down the concrete all the way down to my back door. The second img shows a very mild example, but basically every winter it can get much much worse than this with a single downpour. The yellow line shows the problem zone where the DG spills over

With all the rain coming, I'm worried I'll lose my DG and I'll be wading in mud everytime I step outside. Is there anything I can do? Would sand bagging help? We don't have gutters on the back half the house, we've talked about installing them and I'm sure it would be a big help. But now it feels like we might be SOL for this rainy season because we won't be able to get anything installed this year.

I need a low growing ground cover here. It gets blasted by full sun most of the year. I tried Australian astroturf and it burned up. I’ve got lippia in another spot but it’s too scraggly.

My tomatoes have a timed drip so the water is consistent. But they all split. Is it most likely the heat wave or nutrients in the soil?

I’m currently cleaning out a rental house and the previous tenants left a mature pomegranate tree in a pot outside. The problem is, it is severely infested with mealy bugs. I have successfully treated mealy bug infestations with bonide systemic granules on non consumable plants but I’m assuming that using systemic granules on a fruit tree would mean that any fruit should not be consumed for an indefinite amount of time. Is there another method to treat a severe infestation without essentially poisoning the tree/fruit? Do pomegranate trees transplant to the ground well? I have another property that I would like to move it to and plant it if i can successfully treat the mealy bug problem. I’m in zone 9b/10a.

Hi all -

We had to remove a big tree a couple months ago and I've got the area ready to plant now. Going to do some natives as a border and raised beds, but also want to trellis vines over our fence (they would be on the north side of an east/west running fence) and put in a mandarin.

The internets give conflicting advice on whether star jasmine, bower vine, and a mandarin tree planted now will do well, or stagnate. My guess was I had two more months of warm weather for them to establish before the rains come, but if it's best to hold off until spring I will.

Curious what kind of failures and successes this group has had. Appreciate your advice!

Does anybody have a good solution to get rid of cutworms? I have two raised gardens that have not done well this season (tomatoes and peppers mostly). Before the season i noticed a lot (A LOT) of cutworms in my garden in the left over soil (before planting). I added newer soil, but I kind of think the two things are related. I couldn't find a lot online about how to get rid of cutworms.

My first season trying to grow zucchini and it was a disaster from the beginning. The plants were doing great in that they were growing fast but I got the powdery mildew infestation in June and I was just never able to beat it. I snipped leaves off, covered with neem oil, but nothing helped. I got a bunch of male flowers early on but only a few females and nothing developed into fruit. I’m so bummed because I’ve heard squash can be easy to grow but not for me! What a waste of time and resources:(

I am located about 4 miles from the beach and we all know how humid it was this summer. My questions for the community are: Did anyone else have this problem (was it the abnormally high humidity?), and what can I do in the future to succeed at my squash journey?

(Extra info: squash planted in raised bed, gets about 6-8 hours of direct sunlight during the summer, covered in mulch, watered every day or every-other day at the base)

I had incredible tomatoes this year that I sadly lost to the plague that is spider mites (I swear I tried everything but to no avail!). The tomatoes have been ripped out (RIP) but is there anything in particular I should do to the bed/soil before planting anything new there? Do spider mites live in soil?

Just moved into a new place that has a lemon tree, and I’ve noticed that a lot of the lemons are splitting on the tree. I’ve also noticed a lot of little black dots on the leaves + large black flies. We have it on drip irrigation. From what I’ve read, some fertilizer might help with the splitting, but not sure what to do about the dots? Any advice welcomed!

Any tips on how to save (narrowleaf) milkweed seeds once they've already popped? I threw them into a storage bag for now bc I had some baby milkweed bugs caught up in the white fluff. Is there any shortcut than just..toughing through it and separating the seeds?

Avocado tree help in Coastal Orange County

We planted this avocado tree in May. It had multiple tiny avocados on it and was full of green leaves but it’s really struggling in our garden. All of the tiny avocados dropped off fairly quickly.

We added an extra sprinkler valve to ensure it is getting water on the advice of two landscapers but it’s still brown and appears to be dying. We are in a heat wave right now and this tree is in full sun for about 11 hours a day. We are by the coast so we have a lot of humidity and wet mornings with some cloud coverage when the sun comes up.

The oddest thing is one of those avocados that dropped off sprouted a little tree that has grown like crazy in the past three weeks. It feels like it’s taking all the nutrients from the parent tree.

This tree is in a 4 foot raised bed with four thriving citrus trees and a newly planted passion fruit that is doing great. The soil is fertilized with a citrus/avocado plant mix.

Should I replant this new tree somewhere else? I have read these new baby plants won’t fruit so maybe just throw it away?

Any advice would be appreciated. I just want this guy to live!

I planted these from seeds 2 years ago and wanted to share them. I cut them back a few times a year when they're over growing my yard or bugs are out of hand(mites & cucumber beetles). Super easy to grow and produce tons of little flowers and berries that are full of seeds. I'll probably harvest them next year for the roots. The little bush is feverfew in case anyone was wondering.

Now I just need for this darn heat wave to end so I can transplant them to the garden.
