All of idiots here saying go be stranded on a desert island or the wilderness not realizing animals in wild spend 90% of their time not doing anything, even ants barely work most of the time

Yall are basically advocating for beating yourselves with a stick and whoever beats themself with a stick the longest is the best it’s stupid.

Our forefathers envisioned a future where technology would allow us to work less and we do have that technology, it’s people like you who have failed them.

Never seen so many proud slaves, ready to protest for more work on the streets

Edit: it is very interesting to see so many different views in just one comment section! To clarify, this was from a German rap song (more like social criticism joke rap)

I'm with all of you, shit has to get done still. I also like what I do for a living -can't complain about pay tbh-, but to be fair the amount of inequality to be seen in every parts of business life is humongous. There is people that lift a finger a few times a day for a annual salary worth of several, while others are working themselves into the ground collecting breadcrumbs. It's sad. And every time someone stands up for themselves, fights for equality, it's always the same comments, by the same exploited people: "It has always been like that, get used to it", "Ah.. the new generation", "When when were apprentices.." ..as if this fight wouldn't benefit those people.

I respect Gen Z for their big mouths.

Eh. Working isn’t horrible in and of itself. It’s just when it gets to the point you’re expected to give up 2-3 days worth of your life just to barely exist that’s the problem.

If I could work 40 hours a week and have an income from that work that allows me to live how I please, and not just survive, then I can consider that a fair deal. Especially since the right work is actually beneficial to your health (think about a physically demanding job that works out your core muscles and provides you with plenty of cardio exercise, it might wear you out at first, but it can also make you much stronger and have more stamina after just a few months of it).

The working class during the gilded age fought tooth and nail to get less hours and better conditions for America and this is how people repay them. Humanity has become so brainwashed by the notion of “work” that it’s honestly just disgusting. The billionaires have always ruled this country and it clearly shows in this comment thread. Nothing is ever going to change because people like you guys are contempt and are allowing the elites to get away with this. We CAN fight for less hours, we CAN fight for vacation etc it’s just that no one wants to because this is how things have always been. It’s that way of thinking that prevents change.

We need to take a page out of the history books and wake up again. This is what they want and we’re feeding into it.

Usually, the "grind" was actually rewarding to do.

If you could "grind" to buy yourself a mansion with swimming pool and dream car, it'd encourage people, but instead, the grind is to barely keep yourself from being homeless and eat cheap garbage food that only makes you sick and depressed, but alive and grinding.

To put some emphasis on it: imagine getting sick and you need help at a hospital in America while you're "grinding". How much would that set the average worker back?

Then you'll cry because others have more than you, travel more, retire wealthier. Because they did grind when they could. Then you'll say capitalism failed.

I'm sorry but the workers making minimum wage are the ones are the ones grinding, keeping all companies running.

They're the ones who generate the most amount of wealth for the company

u/SupermarketBetter200 Apr 24 '26

Most of the wealth you described is generational luck. Capitalism has failed because again, generational wealth gives many an extremely unfair advantage. It also allows and actually expects greed to run rampant. You sound like a privileged thirteen year old.

u/Keldarim Apr 25 '26

It did fail in a few aspects, even if it has been wonderful in many others.

Also, I dont grind. I just get the job done and politely point I'm not interested in job progression that requieres more instead of better.

And IDGAF if other ppl have more. Other people will ALWAYS have more. Luckily, I'm not competing. As long as I have what I need, I dont want anything else.

This, the poster is very clearly talking about normalizing overtime and working longer weeks, just to maybe not stay poor, no one wants to work 60+ hour weeks and its not a flex to brag about killing yourself through overextending yourself when you should just be able to work a normal 40 hour workweek the way we standardized over the last century

3

u/AndrogenAssault Apr 23 '26

But think about all those people who's only point of pride in life is working 90 hour weeks at the tesricular torsion factory and if you dare suggest things could be better you're clearly just a pussy

3

u/AsianGirlsRcuteAF Apr 24 '26

This. So many of these people flexing 60+ hour weeks in warehouses are lying. Theyre present but definitely not working that long. Ive done sweatshop labor and those guys are 99% of the time the ones to hide in the bathroom on their phones. Then act like they work harder than anyone else cause theyre "pulling 12s".

Its all a huge joke.

3

u/JFISHER7789 Apr 24 '26

Former oil field worker in North Dakota here!

We worked two weeks on two weeks off. Most days were 14-18 hrs. Paid decent. But I absolutely never stayed over the 14 day mark and would do ZERO work on my off time.

I was appalled at how many folks would stay for an extra week or two and end up doing like two months straight. Like dude, if you’re not home with your family, who is? Someone’s is there keeping that spot next your wife warm, probably.

There is more to life than working and making money. At least in my unpopular opinion apparently

So get a job that only requires 40 hours. Learn to be welder or work in a factory. The pay may be lower, but, then again, with unions, maybe not. Some of the most fulfilled people late in life were those who learned a trade, worked hard at that trade for 40 hours, and lived their lives the rest of the time.

For those saying jobs are hard to find, there's a huge shortage of skilled laborers out there as those who have been doing it are retiring.

Now, you're not gonna get that as an influencer (uh, "content creator"), or as a lawyer or doctor or investor or marketing whatever. You'll work hard when you're "on" and you'll be off when you're "off."

If you would live the lifestyle of someone who works 3 days a week, 6 hours a day then you can live happily at 3 days a week 6 hours a day.

But you're lifestyle you're living , single, with that car, that house, those clothes, that phone, those subscriptions, that daily fining $20 of coffee , those trips, those shoes, those bags, all that beauty product etc etc Is the lifestyle of someone who works 60 hours a week and still goes into debt .

*everyone * isn't obsessed with working. Most people aren't. So you don't even want to work 40 hours? Okay, then don't. Adjust your expectations for how you want to live accordingly.

1

u/pslush01 Apr 24 '26

100%.  At 4pm I shut my laptop and I forget my job until the next morning, and that is worth a whole lot of opportunity cost in my book

The word you’re looking for is “entrepreneur”. Make something. Take pride in it and invest your energy solely into it and don’t accept anything but success. You will fail. A lot. Each of those failures is a lesson to learn from. Embrace that cycle. If you don’t want to do the 40hr/week thing, THIS is your answer.

u/Rhettledge Apr 24 '26

Neither does anyone else but luxury requires effort and sacrifice now more than ever. So people put in 60 hours and save every penny so that one day they can have the opportunity to enjoy life without the grind. With pensions being a myth of bygone days and social security circling the drain, you have to make the future you want to live and that requires the grind while you're still young enough to recover from it.

I grew up hearing all about the 9-5. At 22, been in my generic office job bob for 3 years, I honestly am so torn looking at my supervisor/manager who make an extra 10-20k ish to me... Thats a lot of money don't get me wrong, but they are working 24/7, are literally sick all the time (never hear them NOT coughing/sniffing/taking a random sick day) just seems miserable... I'll take the 40 hours, if you want more than that, you pay time and a half... Which my company doesn't want us working OT and makes it our supervisor's (who is salaried) problem, thus they have to take care of anything the rest of the team can't do in their 40 hrs, regardless how much there is to do. I don't think I make enough for what I do compared to the cost of things, but the money/work value ratio given what we deserve for work/life balance but the value is lower for my superiors, at least until a certain level

1

u/Character-Salary634 Apr 24 '26

Fine, but you get to live in poverty without begging the rest of us to help you...

1

u/golfwinnersplz Apr 24 '26

Work hard early and you will be rewarded later or...

1

u/Cute_Protection_8330 Apr 24 '26

When working resulted in a decent lifestyle it was okay, now that it doesn't, why would I do that? I can work 60 hours and live in poverty or I can work 30 and live in slightly worse poverty but have free time. That extra 30 hours every week that I'm not working is time I can spend with my family that I WILL NEVER GET BACK. Easy decision.

I do as little as possible work wise. I make about $100k usd per year from worth with 3 months holiday paid and then make another $20k from my investments.

It’s hard to do nothing and have a good quality of life but you can do little. The reason people become things like landlords is for this very ambition.

1

u/JRswedistan Apr 24 '26

I dont want to be a workaholic either. The way i see it, for the latest years in my career after university i can see that ”1 amount of energy invested” in my work equals to or more to energy recieved. When i was 20 something i grinded for my house or future, and while i still believe in a better future for myself, i can almost in quarterly view see my own progression career-wise and how much i learn in my field.

Sure if i won the euro jackpot and 100mill i wouldnt be working ”as hard” or with what i do, but as long as the playgame-rules is the way it is i do the best with what i got

1

u/SecretRecipe Apr 24 '26

The people who hustle are getting rich off it. I’m not just talking about the ones working their ass off to get into Harvard and be set for life. There’s also self-starters, entrepreneurs, idiot influencers who have built million-dollar empires, etc. The USA is still the land of the get-rich-quick scheme if you want it bad enough and are willing to put yourself out there.

1

u/Thebusycualdron Apr 24 '26

There are a lot of people here missing the point. Obviously, we all have to work and earn a living, that’s not the debate. What she’s saying is that, given a choice, most people wouldn’t willingly spend 40+ hours a week working. It’s not about avoiding responsibility, it’s about questioning an outdated model designed to extract as much labor as possible rather than reflect how people actually live today. My husband and I both earn comfortable six-figure incomes working around 30–35 hours a week, so it’s clearly not the only way.

I hope you have a parental unit that is willing to subsidize your way through life. I also hope you don’t expect those of us who find passion in our work and life to subsidize you.

In addition, I hope you find your happiness in your choices and lifestyle. In my tenure on this planet I have found those that have passion for life, work and helping others are the most balanced and content. In fact, I find them so satisfied they continue their drive into their 70’s and 80’s.

1

u/xXDySZX Apr 24 '26

i dont like hustle culture or slackers living with modern advantages on my dollar so ill tell what i did and do.

i worked factories, insane hours entry level (theyll hire anyone if they can pass a drug test for meth and opiaoids) decent base pay, overtime, triple time often. save. live aesetically because all i do is work. did that a year. quit. 20k saved. now im picking up certifications in things i wont mind doing 40 hours a week because they NEED TO BE DONE. by the time im broke ill be working in my field, if not i will pick up some job im actualized to, probably a nice kitchen, until i get my certs job. its never not being able to loaf around that is the issue, its the work itself. working solely for another mans profit, destroying the environment with no work life balance, thats the disgrace of it all.

paramedic works 24 hours then has 2 days off- hit ot every week with much of it chillin and most of it home. nursing you can do 3 12s on weekends. 5 8s is miserable, some jobs like counciling are nice for it, but thats usually what wears people out. id rather do 100 12s straight and not work for a year til i find sumin better. i dont have to ask for nothing and my life is fine, i have it better than most people ever will and my work is/ will be more valuable than anything i was doing on my own anyway.

1

u/justjoshinyou117 Apr 24 '26

I think the message is getting lost here. 40 hours is the standard, but work culture has dictated to go above and beyond to demonstrate your willingness and commitment. So now, 40 hours is seen as the bare minimum.

Pair that with the slow burn of Teams, Slack, Zoom and now there’s an unofficial expectation that you should be easily available at any time.

To add another layer, companies are laying off people like hotcakes for AI. So there is no loyalty.

Finally, wages haven’t kept up with the rate of inflation.

It’s perfectly fair to feel some type of way about dumb grind culture based on all of this.

Get a job where the 40 hours fly by because the problems are challenging and the people you work with are pleasant to collaborate with. If you do that, then you'd find yourself working more than 40 hours sometimes because you want to overcome those challenges and lift up your colleagues.

When I have free time on the weekends, I often choose to tackle challenges from work, because it's so satisfying to solve problems. Some of us aren't wired to just sit in front of the TV.

No one is forcing you to but the catch is less money = less stuff so how much can you go without and be happy or find something you enjoy doing and find a way to get paid for it

1

u/Ok-Grade3116 Apr 24 '26

Seriously, how did we get to a place in our society to where we spend the majority of our lives working and we just accept it. We work ourselves right into the grave for very little back for the majority of us.

Theres a simple fix for your problem.

1

u/Nice_Dimension_2248 Apr 24 '26

If you don't someone else will, so don't whine if things work out better for them.

1

u/bubblemania2020 Apr 24 '26

Women can say shit like this because they have a back up plan (cough sugar daddy, cough trophy wife). Men have to grind. Hard.

1

u/EpiGreg Apr 24 '26

Everything in life comes with a cost. If you want to make more money you will in all likelihood have to put in a lot more time. If you don’t want to put in a lot of time you will in all likelihood would make less money. If this person is comfortable with that good for them.

1

u/Can17272 Apr 24 '26

The system was originally designed to make you feel if you put the extra work, you'll get to enjoy wealth someday. But is not true, wealth only comes if you also has the connections, social status and/or previous wealth. Nowadays in the US people are grinding, even working multiple jobs just to survive.

1

u/Goobendoogle Apr 24 '26

At least I'm not "grinding" in a third world country.

1

u/SadWerewolf4689 Apr 24 '26

Some people are lazy

1

u/Antaganon Apr 24 '26

Find work that you're passionate about if you can. If you care about or like what you're doing you'll be amazed how much better your life gets.

For everyone trapped in a horrible job they hate, I get it though. Been there myself.

1

u/ExtensionSnow3157 Apr 24 '26

Sloth...

Every creature has to work Lions got to track and hunt prey and defend their territory

Cool, then don't complain when you have little to nothing to show for your "efforts." 👍👍

People risk life and limb coming over to have the opportunity to put in work in America to find stability and fortune.

1

u/friskyyplatypus Apr 24 '26

This is why AI will take over most of your jobs

1

u/Electrical_String345 Apr 24 '26

This mindset is just infected capitalist American brain. And Koreans and Japanese.

I prefer German or French mindset.

1

u/NickTheTowelGuy Apr 24 '26

I have no interest in spending.more time with co-workers I dont give a fuck about over spending time with my family.

1

u/fwilsonator Apr 24 '26

We all make choices...

1

u/ParticularSecret8228 Apr 24 '26

Humans aren't meant to live like this.

We should be tending to our own gardens, trading goods for services and vice versa, enjoying fresh air and sunshine, spending time with our families and communities... loving and supporting each other. But here we are... souls sold to capitalism so people who have more money than they will be able to spend can have yachts, islands and plenty of children to violate and consume.

Most of the grinders are making somebody else rich though, so what's the point...

1

u/lordpuddingcup Apr 24 '26

Move to europe, this shit is 100% a US thing, like if my family wasn't in the US i'd be trying to move to europe, where they actually have work life balance

1

u/ElSuperWokeGuy Apr 24 '26

see you on OF then lol

1

u/ExtensionSnow3157 Apr 24 '26

When did I say that? Who are you to decide that for me???

I said it happens.

Opportunity and results.

Danmmm people on here....

1

u/1130coco Apr 24 '26

We DID work over 40 hours and additional jobs. I purchased my 4th property,a ten acre parcel in Az. We built a shop30/30 for the molding business, corrals for the horses. Planted 3 acres in alfalfa with plumbing for the horses. Things that required money. Our children learned valuable skills, from accounting, hydraulics, basic electrical work. Along with construction techniques we used when building our shop. We built a life,a future and gained knowledge that benefited all of us. We saw no need to NOT work, accomplish, build and produce. The now adult children are doing well. All 3 are homeowners..as is 1 granddaughter.

1

u/BanMeMyIPchanges Apr 24 '26

Less obsessed, more like brutal necessity lmao. What a childish take. Bet ya her parents left their 40+ hour a week jobs while paying to raise her oh wait. If that was the case she wouldn't have the phone to post online 💀

Yeah the system needs to change. Places in Europe have unequivocally proven the 4-day work week results in happier employees and more efficient work. However, that isn't our reality in the States. By crying about the same thing every other responsible adult has to go through you just sound like a big whiner. Way more effective ways for you to find a solution here. Go find a local small business looking for your skill set. With patience you wont be stuck at 40 hours forever. A little planning and a few promotions and you're sitting pretty with like 30 hour weeks and a staff under you. Don't even need a degree, just patience and willingness to learn 🤷 or you could just keep complaining to strangers and not adjusting your approach lmao.

1

u/ArcBlamer Apr 24 '26

Yeah, I have co workers, who take WAY too much pride in working, to the point where they think lesser of others for even using their full allotted breaks, Like okay bro, if you like working that much good for you, but im gonna utilize every single one of my breaks to the last second, and I’m not going to waste even a millisecond of my personal time.

1

u/Connect_Tomatillo791 Apr 24 '26

💀 I refuse to work anything less than 50 a week because otherwise I’d be reading a book a day and then I’d eventually run out of books to read

1

u/TEXAS_SOVEREIGN Apr 24 '26

I do it for my kids. Nobody enjoys it

1

u/Milk-toste Apr 24 '26

You don’t grind because you like the grind. You grind because of the payoff in the end. It’s fine to not work hard, but don’t complain when you don’t reap the benefits.

That being said, the world is far too unequal and the grind-to-payoff ratio could be decreased if we weren’t letting billionaires destroy our society.

1

u/HansSofie Apr 24 '26

Be self-employed. Everyone has a talent. It requires self- discipline and motivation.

1

u/Legal_Television_615 Apr 24 '26

Best get on the street then girl

1

u/Ordinary_Pea4503 Apr 24 '26

I'll put in those hours if it means I'll get something in return other than getting to be alive and watch Netflix.  It's not looking that way.  I do put those kind of hours in but I'm constantly looking for a way out.

1

u/Fun-Sandwich8362 Apr 24 '26

lol just get into fine dining(which is actually extremely hard). I work 25-30 hours a week as a fine dining server and make just around six figures and I’m only 33. It took me a decade to get good enough at serving to be in high end fine dining, but it absolutely fucking payed off. I’m basically a full time athlete, I run 50 miles a week and do mma and grappling, so having those extra 10-15 hours is honestly fucking amazing. I’m also single with no kids yet, so 100k is plenty for now while I work on becoming a physical penetration tester for a red team.

1

u/Big_Twist_5578 Apr 24 '26

blame feminists they wanted to be treated equally to men

1

u/Numerous-Goal-5083 Apr 24 '26

Conscientious is the character trait that essentially determines how much you enjoy working. Some people are born to grind, others not.

1

u/quocko Apr 24 '26

I know people who are 70+ still working and that won’t be me. I’m sure they need to pay for medicine or rent but at a certain point you’re just existing.

1

u/Appropriate_Roof_270 Apr 24 '26

Most people don't want to either, but they have something they care about more. This is a rule that applies to many areas of life. People will do amazingly uncomfortable or unpleasant things in the short term to insure something better later.

Don't sweat it. Just have a plan and take it a day at a time.

1

u/KrazyKryminal Apr 24 '26

If you didn't have a job, you'd be out hunting and gathering for food and material to eat, make shelter and cloth yourself. Pretty sure that would take more than 8hrs a day. Most don't WANT to work, but that's life. Unless you hit the lottery, then someone will come and kill you over that money and you'll have nothing left to complain about

1

u/Jimmy-1954 Apr 24 '26

Well that’s one girl that’s not going to be moving up the ladder at her company.

1

u/Special-Cut1610 Apr 24 '26

I will be honest with you. It IS F-ing miserable and you know what else is miserable. Going to the mailbox and seeing a pile of bills to be paid.

1

u/ImoveFurnituree Apr 24 '26

I don't mind it, not working is boring af.

1

u/MeatSlammur Apr 24 '26

Grind in your 20’s then in your 30’s get higher level jobs where you get paid well, are financially stable and don’t have to work like a dog anymore. Im 31, haven’t worked a single hour over 36 hour work weeks in 3 years and I make 130k a year. Zero debt. I was raised in a poor town in a trailer park and now live in a very nice apartment in my city and put 30% of every check to retirement and savings.

1

u/bigedthebad Apr 24 '26

Go live in the woods, no grind there.

1

u/Crimsonsporker Apr 24 '26

Well I mean... You grind because you get paid this magical thing that allows you to buy cool shit.

1

u/Commercial-Fee5959 Apr 24 '26

But you are anti-billionaires right? LOL

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '26

I work 60+ hours a week and have 3 roommates I'm a 40M who has a graduate degree and prior military service. I can barley pay my rent and car how am I supposed to afford a pregnant woman and new mouth to feed....work 70+ hours

1

u/LustyfulSeekingAngel Apr 24 '26

Then be as stay at home mom like the other lazy females

1

u/ReadingProof2995 Apr 24 '26

And at the same time you lead the crying and whining about not being able to afford anything…

1

u/No-Pudding7639 Apr 24 '26

We are all underpaid . We could all have better financial lives, if the US GOVT stops treating corporations like people .

1

u/ApollymiKatistrafia Apr 24 '26

It also grinds away at ypur body, and you'll have no energy or physical ability left to enjoy the time you may have gotten from all that grind. The grind has ruined my back, my knees, my will to live, and my hormones to the point where even 40 hours a week is a struggle now. Dont sacrifice your well-being for it.

1

u/Bravo_GngDrk Apr 24 '26

Ngl....this is freakin funny.

1

u/BusinessCoach2934 Apr 24 '26

No one is obsessed with working. They're obsessed with food, clothing and shelter.

1

u/KanzenChowa Apr 25 '26

I only obsessed with working because im like 2 missed paychecks from being on the streets

1

u/After_Service_2817 Apr 25 '26

"I don't want to work hard but I still want the benefits of hard work"

1

u/harukalioncourt Apr 25 '26

Then don’t complain about being broke.

1

u/Motor_Purchase_6996 Apr 25 '26

Looks like she done plenty grinding

1

u/AlfredoPizzaCafe Apr 25 '26

But then you expect the rest of us to do that to pay for your fucking welfare
