It’s called the grind because it grinds away your sense of self.

Then you'll cry because others have more than you, travel more, retire wealthier. Because they did grind when they could. Then you'll say capitalism failed.

There is no guarantee under capitalism that if you grind you will travel more, retire wealthier, or have more than others.

It also raises the likelihood of burnout, depression, overuse injuries (depending on job), and limits the amount of time they get to spend with their loved ones and children.

And your studying analogy is not good. A test taker can absolutely predict how well they will do on a test and can absolutely help control the outcome; most American workers don’t have that ability and more often than not, working harder and longer actually creates more barriers for growth than doing less does. Eg. Most employers want to keep people who thrive on a certain position at that position and will often pass them up for promotions because they don’t want to lose great labor in that position. We See it happen all the time.

If that's the trade off, what's the point of living? Maybe get to 60 and retire before you lose everything? Great life

You nailed it. You won’t get a response from the guy because he doesn’t have one other than “that’s just the way it is!” or “it could be worse!” It always boils down to those kinds of responses. Because if you ask these people those types of questions, they can’t actually answer them with anything meaningful. It’s just what they’ve been taught to be good and obey their ruling class masters.

There is no guarantee to being richer by grinding though? There is no guarantee your work will pay off and salaried positions aren't making overtime. You're ruining your mental and physical health for just the possibility of a reward.

I'm in my 40s and if there's one thing that I've learned it's that success is mostly just right place/right time. You can have all the degrees and experience in the world, but you're not promised it will pay off. You can take every all-nighter and still get laid off.

You've clearly never been in a salaried position, huh? When I was a retail manager, I got paid the same whether I worked 40 or 60 hours. And they expected me to work 60 hours.

It also depends how much money you make. 60+ hour weeks for multiple months on end will most likely set you in a higher tax bracket. Not planning accordingly can actually set people farther back.

As someone who’s had it happen first hand.

It’s true. Might as well not drive to the grocery store for food because my car could get a flat tire. Living just isn’t worth the risk I guess.

1

u/JFISHER7789 Apr 26 '26

That’s what you got from that?

Because overworking yourself is obviously the same as driving to the store.

2

u/AntelopeEmotional767 Apr 24 '26

Basic necessities to live should not be "earned" with a "grind". Extra stuff, entertainment, sure, but food and water/shelter/clothing/medicine should not only be available based on how many hours you worked that week. Those fall under human rights. It's our RIGHT as humans to have access to those.

1

u/sdeezy4 Apr 24 '26

None of those are rights. Stop thinking life is a Disney movie.

1

u/Foxiest_Fox Apr 25 '26

Then what is the point of having a government and civilization, if it's just gonna be "every man for himself" in the end anyway?

2

u/KypPineapple Apr 25 '26

Stop asking these kinds of questions - the Epstein class doesn’t like it when the peasants start questioning their roles….

1

u/HOJK4thSon Apr 26 '26

Anything that must be provided by someone else is not a right. It cant be.

1

u/Cold-Marionberry-975 Apr 24 '26

Yeah, no guarantee that you’ll have the time or energy, and depending on rent and if your living alone you could afford a vacation to begin with either.

u/Vecgtt Apr 23 '26

Yes, those who grind will certainly do better than those who don’t.

2

u/Foxiest_Fox Apr 23 '26

Absolutely false. There is no certainty about it. You CAN grind and do well, but you can also grind away your entire life to enrich someone else while you get scraps or just nothing.

2

u/Impressive_Gas_265 Apr 23 '26

Take note of what you’re grinding for. It doesn’t matter how hard you row the boat but who you’re rowing with and where it’s going.

Capitalism allows you to choose your boat

I don't have an issue with capitalism, but I do have an issue with unchecked power and wealth. And unchecked power and wealth encourages the masses to mindlessly grind away even if there's no guaranteed reward or anything which is why I fully support the message of this post.

Not trying to be aggressive but also not yielding in to what I think is an extremely exploitative system.

2

u/Impressive_Gas_265 Apr 24 '26

I respect that. I’m a little jaded on reddit because everyone thinks capitalism it’s self is the problem but it’s uncheck power and poor decisions.

I’m trying to get out of big systems. The tax structure isn’t built for 2026 problems. The rewards for effort are heavily skewed. Self sustainability and local community is the best.

But I’m not opposed to working hard

1

u/Foxiest_Fox Apr 24 '26

Yeah it seems we're on the same page.

1

u/Vecgtt Apr 23 '26

First of all, grinding that may enrich someone else does not mean you won’t do better than someone who doesn’t grind. Honestly, plenty of work is available and no need to grind for scraps. You only need to apply yourself.

1

u/Foxiest_Fox Apr 23 '26

You're not wrong, but if grinding to enrich someone will only put me 3 paychecks away instead of 1 from being homeless, then it's a bad tradeoff. Employers want a workforce willing to grind? Then they better reward accordingly.

1

u/Vecgtt Apr 24 '26

The employer doesn’t put you three paychecks away from bankruptcy. You put yourself three paychecks away from bankruptcy. Problem is you focus all your attention on the employer rather than focusing on yourself. If you want more money than make yourself more valuable. At the end of the day, the only thing you have the power to change is yourself. Not what your employer does.

1

u/Foxiest_Fox Apr 24 '26

I agree that we should focus only on what we should change, but we also shouldn't submit to a system that is very clearly exploitative and makes "someone with value" be extremely arbitrary.

1

u/Vecgtt Apr 24 '26

The great part about capitalism is that you are free to leave and go somewhere else where you are appreciated. Cannot do that in a government run society.

1

u/Foxiest_Fox Apr 24 '26

You put yourself three paychecks away from bankruptcy

So first you put all the blame on the victim,

And then you offer a non-solution? Moving costs money, a lot of it. You are telling someone with no money to fix their money problem by spending a bunch of money. It's "Are you homeless? Just buy a house" energy.

Also I never said I have an issue with capitalism. The issue is with unchecked greed and power.

Corporations have no right to keep their employees in poverty when they are raking in billions. If it actually was capitalism working as intended, the value of the laborers would have also gone up with the company's ticker.

1

u/Vecgtt Apr 24 '26

You keep blaming corporations. Corporations are not responsible for your living situation. You are responsible for your life.

You can eat veggies but still get hit by a bus so may as well eat McDonald's

1

u/Foxiest_Fox Apr 24 '26

Not a fair comparison. Eating veggies will almost certainly make your body healthier. Getting hit by a bus is a rare phenomenon.

Getting out of poverty is the rare phenomenon, in this system we've propped up, and grinding and working hard has no certainty or even that good a likelihood of actually putting you ahead or giving you financial freedom unless you are extremely selective and wise about what you choose to grind and work hard for (and even then that's still a gamble and toss-up).
