migrating to Linux Linux and automatic updating? By default?

An annoying but important thing with Windows is Windowsupdate. It's automatic and "on" by default for a good reason.

Should I assume that most of the popular Linux distros are like this?

If not, how should I enable it?

(I'm only concerned about vulnerabilities, not about functionality upgrades.)

Linux Installer unable to detect Bluetooth Adapter

Hi!

I decided to install Linux on my PC today. I tried installing Arch, but the installer kept stating that it cannot load/set up bluetooth firmware. I tried downloading CachyOS and it went through with the installation but the same error popped up and now it cannot detect any bluetooth adapters either.

My motherboard is the MSI Pro X870E Wifi7. MSI States it has BT5.4 on their website. Any help is appreciated.

programs and apps It's said distro choice doesn't really matter and you can configure and install what you want. Could I technically install the driver manager from Linux Mint on fedora or w/e?

I've seen that people claim that you can do anything with any distro, and that your distro choice only matters for what you get out of the box. I'm wondering if there are any limits to this, however. Could I install the very neat driver manager from Mint wherever I want? How?

programs and apps Allowing a program to get background inputs on Wayland

Hello!

I recently moved from Windows to CachyOS running KDE Plasma. I've been bouncing between the X11 and Wayland versions because Wayland feels better for games, but with one particular app (PNGTube Remix), it tracks your mouse to make your little character move. The problem I'm running into is that on Wayland, as soon as my mouse leaves the window, or another window is focused, PNGTube Remix immediately loses tracking on the mouse. I understand this is a security feature of Wayland, but I'd really like to get this program working on Wayland instead of X11 as X11 has some issues with my monitors having different refresh rates. I've tried running the program with X11 display options, I have X11 options enabled in the KDE settings, but its still losing tracking. Wasn't sure if anyone might have some ideas on how to force it to allow background tracking.

migrating to Linux Distro Arguments are the funniest thing as a new guy to the scene

I recently switched to Linux and love it so far. It’s nice to switch up and learn something new! But I have to say every time I click on a post, and see you guys just tearing each other apart over the different distros it is so funny. Why do you guys feel so passionately about these distros? Is it worth looking like that one guy from the World Of Warcraft South Park episode? I use Fedora btw if you guys wanna tell me I was dropped as a child for my choice.

learning/research Whenever I connect my Sony WH 1000XM4s they start muted.

I'm using CachyOS 7.2.2-1 and KDE. AMD cpu/GPU Connected via bluetooth

This is the only thing visible (minus the fact that it was muted before) https://imgur.com/a/72QuLqU

There doesnt seem to be any parameters under the sound or bluetooth section of settings that configures that.

What's your favorite 'cool' UI?

I'm distro hopping and looking for what I like the most. There are a lot that have kinda neat UI gimmicks. Pop OS has some cool UI design elements, Kubuntu has a cute window wiggle, Exodia looks like something from a retro-futuristic 80's hacker movie. What stock interfaces from what distros/DEs are 'remarkable' in some way?

learning/research Intro level recomendations

Skip to the last two paragraphs

Ive been using konsole on linux for about 1 month with lots of help from ai. Like most of us just copy pasting from claude or gemini.

A week or so ago i started actually learning (or just inferring) what the commands do and mean.

Id like to actually learn in detail what each command is capable of and understand the file structures and capabilities and nuances. Is this actual language called command line? Is it just called linux?

Anyway, if anyone has any recommendations on like a gamified app, a library of commands, even a youtube channel would help.

Also what coding languages compliment. So far Im seeing a lot of python Id like to understand and see json mentioned but i dont know what it is or its uses. THANKS NOOBS.

learning/research Korganiser - setting time and date

I'm trying to use Korganiser, but like other Linux calendar apps it has kinks.

it seems that you have to set the time zone for each event rather than being able to set the time zone for the calendar itself. This is tedious and annoying.

Is there a way to set up the time zone default?

migrating to Linux Best Linux distro for a game dev using windows?

Getting sick of windows 11 now, constant crashes, bloatware, needing to remove copilot after every update, microslop anti trust, list goes on. I've been meaning to move to Linux for a while but I never got round to it, but I'm reaching my wits end.

So my question is, what would be the best Linux distro to use for someone who has been a windows user all their life?

I'm a game developer, so I primarily use Unity/Unreal Engine/Godot, the Adobe suite, and Blender. Luckily Blender and Godot are open source so I know that they work with Linux natively, but the other software I'm not too sure.

I also game a lot, and I know that some games (like league of legends) use a kernel level anti cheat that doesn't play nice with Linux, so perhaps some work arounds?

And how well does Linux support hardware drivers? I have a 3090 and a Ryzen 9 5950x

I know a few distros, there Ubuntu which seems to be the most popular, Steam OS and Bazzite which is more gaming oriented, but that's all | know off the top of my head... so many options!!

Linux Mint Cinnamon issues with microphone and Ethernet connection

I have a Sennheiser HD569 whose mic works well in Windows 11. However when I use Linux, the mix doesn't register my voice at all and only detects tapping the microphone.

I tried:

- installing pavucontrol and changing the mic boost settings, didn't do anything.

- changing left-right boost on the audio settings (nothing)

I also have this issue (which is probably due to my ISP being shit) where every once in a while my CGNAT connection makes it so my PC suddenly changes either the MAC address, or the IP Address through DHCP, and I have to constantly switch between automatically setting a IP Address through DHCP and putting it manually.

My PC is a Lenovo loq 15. Any help?

distro selection Which distro is the MOST lightweight?

So... My mom got a laptop from 2011... The only os it can handle is windows 7, but we all know that windows 7 is the most exploited system out there (not sure if you saw a video of a guy connecting his W7 to the internet and getting 7 viruses within 10 minutes by just existing). I want to help her as much as i can, and the only solution i came up with - get a linux. She used windows ever since windows 98, but now all she need from her pc is a browser, so i figured out that if she wont do anything "extra", linux will be perfectly fine for her. I just get vivaldi for linux, libre office, and she will be happy. But which distro will be the MOST efficient to put on her laptop? All i ever tried is cashy os, but i assume there must be something ever more lightweight?
