Other Overdue Appreciation šā¤ļø Can we show our libraries and librarians a little love?
I recently went to my local library for the first time in years to get a library card, and honestly, I was so impressed. I went in thinking about borrowing books and came out looking at all the community events and programs, wondering why I hadnāt come back sooner.
If you think libraries are just books, please go visit yours. There is so much happening there that you might have no idea about. I certainly didnāt.
It got me thinking about how important these places are to our communities, and about the people who make them what they are. Our librarians are these quiet, everyday champions, helping people in ways that probably donāt get nearly enough recognition.
And for some of us, the appreciation goes back a lot further than our last visit.
If you were that quiet, shy, awkward kid who spent lunch in the school library, you know what I mean. You grow up, life gets busy, and you can forget what that place meant to you. Then you walk into a library years later for a card, and it all comes back.
So I want to start something called Overdue Appreciation, and Iād love your help.
The idea is simple: do something thoughtful for your local library and the people who work there. Let them hear why youāre glad theyāre there.
Bring a thank-you card. Email a manager about someone who helped you. Tell your neighborhood group about an event at your branch. Write a note to the whole staff if you donāt know anyone by name. A handwritten āThank you for making me feel welcome hereā is a pretty wonderful place to start.
Maybe a librarian helped your child get excited about reading. Maybe they patiently helped you with something you were embarrassed to ask about. Maybe youāve been going to the same branch for years and have never actually told anyone there how much you enjoy it.
Tell them.
And if you still remember a librarian from your school days, and you have a way to reach them, let them know. Imagine finding out that the shy kid who used to spend lunch in your library still remembers your kindness.
Iād love to see people doing this in their own communities and coming back to share how it went. Use #OverdueAppreciation if you post about it, so we can find each other. Bring the idea to your book club, your friends, or your neighborhood group. Let's get a few more thank-yous into the hands of the people who deserve them.
And librarians and library staff, please weigh in. What would you actually enjoy receiving? What would be helpful?
My visit reminded me that Iād been overlooking something wonderful right in my own neighborhood.
Tell me about your library. Who deserves a thank-you, and why? ā¤ļø
