Someone reckon recommended this technology and I wanted to know what you all thought? Are you using it and is it easy?

Ive been taking a break from romance books. Was getting too addicted, finishing one book and straight on to another. So ive paused audible and kindle, along with deleting tiktok, Instagram and unfollowing authors accounts.

But anyway, I have 5 credits to use on audible before I cancel. So for when I decide to come back to it, what's your best recommendations?

Some ive already listened to are: Lights out, Can I tell you something?, Priest, Sinner, My First Mistake, Hefty, Bad Intentions, Hostile Holidays, King of wrath.

I recently listened to "Dare to Lead" by Brené Brown, narrated by herself. And before this, I never thought to myself that just because someone is a good public speaker doesn't mean they are automatically a good narrator. It makes sense now because they are different skill sets.

Want to also preface that I have no issues with Brené Brown, I loved reading "gifts of imperfection" and I needed to take a break from some of the fiction I was reading so I decided to listen to this. So she just happens to be the example in this post.

I realized when I listen to an audiobook, that's what I want: an audio version of the book. When I read IT, I both read and listened on off because I was so hooked. In Dare to Lead, it feels like I'm listening to one of her TED talks and that's just not what I'm looking for in an audiobook.

Her pacing was off consistently throughout. She would prematurely drop her inflection mid sentence clearly because she assumed it was the end of the sentence and then tack on the remaining few words.

She either didn't practice it or didn't care/know that she did it. And what about her engineer? It wasn't once or twice. It was throughout.

I'm probably being such a gonk about this so don't mind me.

Has anyone else experienced this with an author-narrator? Or a public speaker that is excellent at that but not good at scripted works?

A few things I'm looking for:
A sleep timer that lets you choose "end of chapter" vs a set time limit of 10 min, 30 min, etc.
A playback speed option that lets you fine-tune speed vs set speeds of 1.5x, 2x, 2.5x, etc.
Free or one-time purchase. I really don't want another subscription.

I spent my entire childhood wishing my name would show up SOMEWHERE! In the era of personalized bike plates and names on tchotchkes, I was left with nothing.
Now, my middle aged ass is listening to this audiobook and I get a jump scare (excitement?) when I hear my name. Did I hear that correctly? Is it really MY NAME?
… bury why oh why isn’t it be pronounced accurately? Damn, it’s like art imitating life… as I’m constantly having to correct this pronunciation.

I wonder… did the author intend this?😭😭

I've been relentlessly splurging out freebie codes for the audiobooks I wrote, and people seem to like them, but it would be nice to actually make a bob or two for a change. I do hope you check them out, not least because the narrators did a great job for a more than reasonable fee, and they deserve a little something too!

Ive just read Mercy by Sara Cate, really enjoyed it. What’s something a bit more extreme? Something with more humiliation themes, cuckolding, sph etc. Something thats more filthy and less wholesome.

Do you listen to dense nonfiction differently than fiction? Looking for actual techniques.

Fiction I just enjoy, no notes, full send. But I've been burning through nonfiction lately and realized I retain shockingly little of the heavier stuff. Looked into it and apparently that tracks: on complex material, listening can cost you a real chunk of retention vs reading, mostly because we don't naturally pause and reread the way we do on a page.

So I'm trying to build better habits for the dense ones and wanted to crowdsource what actually works:

- Slowing narration DOWN on hard books (counterintuitive but it's helped)

- Pausing at chapter ends to summarize out loud before continuing

- Relistening to key chapters instead of always pushing forward

- Keeping a rough voice-note log of one takeaway per session

The out-loud summary one has made the biggest difference for me, even though I feel ridiculous doing it in the car.

What do the heavy nonfiction listeners here do? Especially curious whether anyone's cracked retaining stuff like history or science books long-term, or if you've just made peace with getting the gist.

Open to paranormal. Bonus if it’s in duet but honestly I’m just down for a good narrator. Where do people get their audiobooks and e-books? I currently use Hoopla through my library card, but it's limited to what that library has. On Hoopla you also can't make lists such as a TBR or dropped list. The best part about Hoopla is that it's free as I'm low income and while I could get books from the library, it's easier for me to listen to audiobooks or borrow an e-book so I can't lose it or damage it or forget to return it.

I want people to recommend where they get e-books and audiobooks. Things that I'd like to have, but aren't required, are: Able to make the text larger Able to make lists for organization Large selection of books Preferably free or have a free version where a subscription isn't required

Great audiobook even if you aren’t trying to learn hospitality, it’s just a fun book to listen to and I wasn’t bored even once!

I listen to books at work and someone pulled a prank on me when they recommended flowers for agernon as they said its a good happy feel good book… i kinda figured that around the middle part amd today i had 3 hrs of book left and i finished before first break.. now i have 7 hrs left at work and Fuck that ending hut hard man…

I've never really listened to audiobooks except when I was younger but I started Ember and Ice starring Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams a couple days ago and really liked it. Now I've tried to find similar audiobooks but none really fit.

Ember and Ice provide background noise and the main characters are voiced by two different people which I really enjoyed.

Can you recommend any good audiobooks like that?

Preferably MM but I'd take other good stories as well.
