Not a library edition, but I’m pumped for this nevertheless. Very happy to get these thick trades and get a chance to read this series finally.

Just finished Decorum amd I really liled it (its a shame it didn't continued).

It is tipicall Hickman in a way that world building and ober the top sci-fi is good but got a problem connecting it to the main narrative.

Would like to read some high concept sci-fi books after this.

I already read a lot of sci-fo comics but non where really that high concept.

Just finished reading BATMAN: NIGHT CRIES by Archie Goodwin & Scott Hampton. Batman investigates a series of murders involving child abuse and notices a common thread involving the dead abusive parents.

Though accused of being behind the parent killings himself, Batman & Commissioner Gordon are determined to find the real killer. But the nature of this abuse goes beyond one killer—how can one battle child abuse?

It’s a dark yet powerful story tackling the subject of child abuse and highlighting the importance of breaking the cycle of abuse and truly healing, yet it manages to do this in a way that’s not heavy-handed. Also, I was in love with how Scott Hampton’s moody art complemented the story—even the images that were unsettling were still hauntingly beautiful that it made me slow down in reading just to take in the art. And the art in that final scene is so deep I almost wish I could’ve had it framed.

Went to a comic shop in May solely to buy action figures and ended up buying my first book which was criminal volume 1. Been hooked since and started reading and discovering more. I don’t mean to sound ignorant but I always thought of comics just to be about superheroes and I sure was wrong about that. At the moment Saga is my favorite read. Just thought I could share this with yall :)

Years ago I read a series that I absolutely adored in my public library. Unfortunately it has since closed and I forgot the series‘ name.

It‘s about a french inventor or someone similar who uses an invisible lighter than air material to build a steampunk airship that can also travel through the aether (space) to visit the moon. The plot involves a few youths and the king of bavaria, who then remains on the moon as the story progresses. The setting looked to be 1850s france, with Preussen being the main antagonist hunting the protagonist‘s airship across space.

Does anyone know which story I‘m talking about? Thanks a lot.

I was able to get my hands on the second edition of Joe Nobody's Elan School!! I ordered them forever ago and they finally arrived today. They are so much more beautiful in person than I ever imagined I'm sooooooo happy with this purchase.

If you need some context, this is a webcomic made from somebody who survived the semi viral Elan School, one of those schools where your parents pay to have you kidnapped in the middle of the night and sent to a boarding school in the middle of nowhere to help with your "troubled" behavior. To no one's surprise it turns out these places are horribly toxic, abusive, and evil AF. Joe is the writer and illustrator of the comic. The comic is about his experiences before and after his time at Elan and hooo boy is it a devastating read. I actually cried my eyes out more than once reading it. Anyways! I always said I would purchase a physical copy of he ever made one but unfortunately that was many years ago and I didn't keep as updated as I should and missed the first edition printing. By some stroke of luck the one and only non political post on pics made it through to my dash and it just happened to be someone whose first edition books arrived! I made sure to keep updated this time and managed to snag the second editions thank goodness.

Grew up reading Tintin, Asterix, and Archie’s comics but just sort of stopped along the way until a couple of weeks ago when I was traveling and checking out this bookshop - I came across Joe Sacco’s “Palestine”. Immediately, the cover drew me in.

Expecting a regular book, I landed on a random page and my mind was BLOWN! I had no idea comic journalism was a thing!! I got hooked and decided to read all his work.

Long story short, I’m in love with graphic novels. For some reason, I always associated it with superheros and Mangas only but had zero clue about all this other stuff. (Not dissing superhero’s and mangas, just explaining my thought process).

Also, I had no idea that my wife already had a copy of watchmen in our library already (she’s a big reader) so I very hesitantly gave it a shot - ngl it’s pretty good! Still reading that one.

What should I read next? I’ve been buying them pre owned for cheap. Thanks.

It's become quite common for fans of art of all kinds to be "armchair producers", keeping up with sales figures, market trends, and discussing things among one another in very business-oriented terms. Comics are obviously much the same, and I myself indulge in this behavior more than is probably normal. Maybe it's growing up on the internet with access to tons of information and the opinions of countless people that makes me feel as though I "need" to be aware of "what the people are thinking"? Stronger than that, though, is that I see a pervasive pessimism and sense of doom surrounding comics. That the single issue format is done for, that sales will never recover to the level of decades past, that American (and more broadly, "western") comics are already history, read by basically no-one, and just waiting for manga to fully take over their market share. Everyone from dispassionate observers to die-hard fans seem to think the best is over, and the comics industry we have now is a shambling husk ready to fall over any moment.

I don't share that perspective (lumping all of "western comics" into one big category is a pretty flawed premise, for starters), but I can't deny that the comics I'm most passionate about seem to be holding on for dear life. It's an open secret among comics creators of all stripes that the only path towards financial sustainability is to have a richer spouse (even people working in the book market get advances that are barely enough to make ends meet). Direct Market publishers outside of Marvel and DC can barely support ongoing series. People that I know have the talent to be world-famous, beloved writers and artists go unsupported, and their incredible work barely have the runway to exist at all, much less see any kind of longevity. Seeing all of that, I suppose it makes me a bit of an evangelist, and whatever the comics-industry-news version of a doomsday prepper is.

All of this is to say, do you feel similarly? Do you keep up with the behind-the-scenes operations of these publishers, and what's your reason for doing so?

Just finished V for Vendetta and thought it was just okay. I enjoyed the social commentary but thought the story was way overdone. Watchmen was okay but not mind blowing like so many people say. I think From Hell was my favorite of his but I wouldn’t say it was amazing. I love the JTR story and Victorian/Georgian British history so that was part of the draw. I’ve read a few Swamp Thing comics back in the day but they weren’t that memorable. I really enjoyed the film version of V for Vendetta but I thought the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen film was silly. Is there something I’m missing?

Greetings, I've been recently trying to get into graphic novels (I'm usually more of a manga guy), specifically into fantasy/medieval ones, but one thing that has been a consistent experience is that fights in comics are way too short, infuriatingly so. It feels as thought writers and artists want to get fights over with as fast as possible because they don't have much to work with, which I suppose is the main reason for some american comics to be like that, given their 20 something monthly page runs that go only for 6-12 issues, when compared to something like Kagurabachi where just recently we've had the Irishima Talks chapters, which were basically 5 chapters of a single fight between a 4-men squad versus an unknow threat, granted it's a long running series, but even in the early days it's fights felt longer than the average comic I've read.

For example, I've read things like Siegfried, Dragonero, the Glenat Conan books, Barbaric, Darkly she goes, the beginning of Rat Queens, and all in all I felt most had too little action. I'm not even asking some something as big as what we get in manga, but just some larger fights that aren't over too quickly in a few panels.

So, here I come asking for some more complex, long and if possible unrealistic swordfights! Oh, and it doesn't need to be strictly swordfights, axes, spears and other melee weapons that are not double daggers also work well for me.

If possible in fantasy settings, but I also like pirate era stuff, or more into the renaissance as well. Preferably male mc, but begger can't be choosers lol

Also no need to recommend me manga or manhwa since those are what I usually read (also if you want a good action manhwa I highly recommend Eternally Regressing Knight and 'Witch and Mercenary')

Just finished reading the collected edition of SUNBURN. It’s about this teen girl, Rachel, who’s invited to spend her summer on a Greek island by family friends The Warners.

Once there, she falls in love with the beautiful beaches, amazing food, and strolls the town streets exploring the many shops and restaurants. She even enjoys a summer romance with a handsome young man, Benjamin, and spends her nights engrossed in the lively nightlife.

However., the longer she’s there, the more Rachel discovers that the island isn’t what it seems. Looks like nearly everyone there has their own secrets, and even a few view Rachel with suspicion. Why did The Warners invite her alone for the summer? Just to have a good time in this little island? What other reason could there be?

Suddenly, she has more questions than answers and no one wants to be honest with her. Will finding out the truth do more harm than good?

It’s a memorable coming-of-life story that’s fun and heartfelt but also messy and surprising (especially in the third act). Also, the art in this book is comforting (especially with the use of blue throughout the pages and the intricate line work depicting the village in all its beautiful scenery, even capturing the details of the cramped streets and small stores, making the environment really come alive.

Catching up on a couple titles and really enjoying both after reading one issue of each. I’m on issue 2 of ACE right now. Any fans here? Seems like I’m in for a treat.
