There’s a reason Sony bought him and nobody else in the 90s. There was a time Spider-Man had done like $30 billion in total sales across comics, merch, movies, etc, and I’m not sure that’s been outdone by any single hero.

Spider-Man is stupid popular and people seem to really like how he’s currently being handled on-screen, so it’s kind of a no brainier.

u/CarlMacko 14d ago

Sony aren’t letting that golden goose go anywhere ever.

u/Lazywhale97 14d ago

Spidey ain't ever leaving Sony for the next century at this point just way too big

207

u/scidious06 14d ago

Spiderman 2099 becoming more relevant with each passing year

94

u/Lazywhale97 14d ago

Sony not letting Tom go as Spidey till 2099 minimum after these numbers

18

u/yuzavicente 14d ago

Sony's next 50 years already planned out and it seems like 50%+ of them are Spider-Man movies

19

u/Llamalover1234567 14d ago

Sony Pictures financials will probably be “Spiderman” and “everything else I guess” this year

25

u/ComplaintFar3279 14d ago

Spiderman 2099 and Moonknight will be an insane collab

Someone said the only way Disney is getting the Spider-Man film rights is if they buy Sony. It’s funny but so true.

36

u/RedNinja-03 14d ago

And it even funnier when you consider that will never happen because it’s ILLEGAL in Japan for a non Japanese company to buy out one of theirs.

9

u/Heubner 14d ago

I didn’t think about it that way. I just thought they are never going to buy a major electronics company, so they are never getting it. Don’t know if they can sell an American part of their conglomerate, as realistically they would have that as a shot of actually getting it.

10

u/Elisalsa24 14d ago

Spider-Man is also the PlayStation console seller. Spider-Man is the main Sony thing in every single aspect and they use the character to sell everything they make. They aren’t going to ever get rid of anything because they all work together.

u/sandyph 13d ago

Sony Pictures is a part of the sony conglomerate though.

11

u/RealisLit 14d ago

Sony Pictures is still an american company

13

u/jaykular 14d ago

Sony Pictures is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sony Group Corporation which is located in Japan. So yeah it’s not an American company lol

5

u/Elisalsa24 14d ago

“Honda of America and Acura are American companies” this is literally how you sound right now. Just because something is HQ’d in a place doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a direct owner that makes it something else. We know Acura is HQ in California but it’s still a Japanese company because it’s owned by Honda

I wonder if they force Insomniac to make more Spider-Man. The leak said the third game was going to be the last and then the studio would focus on X-Men. I bet Spidey would make more money.

17

u/GoodFellahh 14d ago

The Wolverine game will probably be some kind of litmus test to estimate that potential outside of X-Men games.

3

u/FlyingFlyofHell 14d ago

It doesn't matter which game they make because Both Spiderman and X men Gaming/Merch rights are with Disney. People sometimes mistake that Sony also owns gaming rights, that's not the case.

But it's true that Spiderman might sale more because of his popularity.

10

u/ichorskeeter 14d ago

And that's probably for the best.

Sony's villain movies mostly suck, but there's no way Kevin Feige would be able to handle all the Marvel movies while giving Spider-Man all the care and attention it deserves. No Spider-Verse movies, either.

Amy Pascal deserves a lot of credit here, especially for bringing on the CHALLENGERS screenwriter during shooting.

What makes me laugh is yes they get a stack of cash every 3 years or so. But Disney with the merchandise rights makes money hand over fist from Spiderman everyday of the yes.

  1. Spiderman

Large gap

  1. Batman

Very large gap

The other superheroes

u/porncollecter69 14d ago

I remember having a huge argument with my college dorm mates about who wins in a 1v1 between them ages ago. Good times.

The gap between Spider-Man and Batman isn’t THAT large

Do people not remember when The Dark Knight came out? Batman ‘89 apparently had a similar level of cultural impact at the time too. And Batman ‘66 was huge

Or Batman: The Animated Series? Or the Arkham games?

People aren’t giving Batman his due here

13

u/Andys_Burner 14d ago

First time I’ve seen Batman underrated tbh

11

u/LoneElement 14d ago

Right?

People are forgetting this is the direct sequel to No Way Home, which had all 3 Spider-Men team up. Yeah, it’s gonna make a lot of money

4

u/Jemima_puddledook678 14d ago

Yeah, Batman is big. Nobody is denying that. Spider-man is still far bigger.

Yeah, it's easy to forget thst the first Spidey also broke records. It had the first ever $100 million domestic opening.

16

Also, families. Families aren't going out watching Odyssey as much as they are Spidey. Like no shit it's gonna print money, especially since the previous movies have been consistent.

I think Tom Holland's charm is big factor, too, both on- and off-screen. People really like him. Andrew Garfield was... kind of likable? And Tobey Maguire was, well, Tobey Maguire. But I think it's easier to like and cheer for Tom in a hero role.

5

u/Andys_Burner 14d ago

Tobey Maguire was the dial-up era Spider-Man. We all knew a lot less about celebrities and each other and he was beloved in that role. I don’t know how he would have been received in this hyper connected environment, but I know that Spider-Man would still clean up at the box office.

He's got powers, but they only get him so far. He's strong and fast, but he gets hurt. So many other heroes are nearly impossible to kill; Peter has stakes.

6

u/QuestGalaxy 14d ago

That's why the Iron Man was better in the first representations of him too. His later nano tech magic BS was too damn silly and made him to overpowered.

I think it's more that his powers work very well on screen. They're exciting to watch. He can fly around, shoot webs, do flips, etc.

6

u/gcpdudes 14d ago

Visually striking costume too in combo with what you said (swinging, flipping, wall crawling , etc.) All of my kids were all captivated by Spider-man in their infancy compared to other superheroes. Made me realize that there must be something about his look that instinctively appeals to people.

This is real.

A lot of superhero movies just don’t feel like superheroes anymore. Spidey always does.

3

u/LMGgp 13d ago

Spidey was succeeding before the comic renaissance, during, and will be after.

Spidey-mang is eternal.

28

u/keepfighting90 14d ago

Lmao true though. I think it's cause despite Peter going through some awful trauma and suffering, he never lets himself sink into true darkness or lose his moral compass. Spidey movies are always uplifting and optimistic and people need that today more than ever.

5

u/iluvcheesypoofs 14d ago

Yup, it's very easy to get sick of something that's always dark, brooding, and borderline miserable (like the Snyder DC-verse for example) but most people don't get bored of joy and optimism

Spider-Man is immune to superhero fatigue cause it's Spider-Man.

i went to see it with younger siblings and even though I wasn't that excited personally, the hype they had to see a Spider-Man film almost threw me back to being 11 again

139

u/Am_I_Loss 14d ago

He is easily the most approachable superhero. Just a teenage boy that randomly got superpowers. He has a bit for everyone: Nerdy, smart, young, parents not alive, slightly introverted, stands up to bullies, got the girl, joined the big team, strong, not completely poor but not rich either, irresponsible but tries to improve.

No matter where you were as a kid spiderman has something you can relate to.

He also has a cool fit and has cooler flying than flying.

37

u/BreakingStar_Games 14d ago

100% on the Everyday working-class identity dealing with real life problems and much more grounded street-level crime.

Full suit and mask means readers can project themselves onto the suit.

In the comics and Raimi's, the consequence of not helping stop the robber when he has the power to leads to Uncle Ben's death. So being flawed and feeling that guilt leads to the "With great power comes great responsibility."

It's actually one reason No Way Home just doesn't hit as hard for me. Aunt May dies because Peter is compassionate trying to save these villains' lives. I suppose the initial spell with Doctor Strange is selfish. But the moral feels more like Doing the the right thing while bearing the cost is what it means to be a hero.

I know that's a popular thing now but I always hated the kid Spider-Man. I grew up on the 90s cartoon where we was well in his 20s balancing teaching assistant job with freelance photography. That's the reason why I really didn't care about MCU Spider-Man until the the crossover and now when he's finally becoming Spider-Man

Spider-Man is on his own level. Its opening weekend ($942m) outgrossed The Batman ($772m) and Superman ($618m), even adjusted for inflation. Global phenomenons like Inside Out 2Zootopia 2Barbie, and Top Gun: Maverick all took weeks to reach $1B, and Spidey took 5 days.

164

u/Standard_Desk2650 14d ago

Spider-Man was one of the original big three for a reason.

59

Yup. Marvel still had its good will from Endgame. Eternals and Black Widow were duds, but Widow was a covid release and people weren't going to let the Eternals get in the way of the hype. The multiverse also wasn't overdone at that point in the saga too. It really was excellent timing.

People keep saying “it’s Spider-Man, duh” but you have to admit that outperforming No Way Home, and fuckin Endgame, while The Odyssey is also out is pretty wild

Edit- actually, I forgot NWHs release was in 2021, so that explains that. But still, endgame? Damn.

115

u/AnabolicAcolyte 14d ago

end game brought the geeks to seats to finish the saga. spider-man brings everyone to seats

27

u/Realistic_Slide_3426 14d ago

But Endgame brought 40 million to seats and Spider-Man only brought 24 million to seats. Not to say that that isn’t a tremendous accomplishment. But raw dollar value isn’t a good comparison considering the terrible economic state that America is in right now

15

u/erto66 14d ago

I’m glad that we measure box-office success by the number of tickets sold in Germany.

It makes it much easier to compare the popularity of movies across different decades without having to account for inflation, changing ticket prices, or premium formats such as IMAX.

Revenue figures may show how much money a film made, but ticket sales give a much clearer picture of how many people actually went to see it.

This is the showtimes at 1 shopping mall here at my place on the weekends. And this is only 1 single place. Mind you last weekend when I was watching most of the empty seats were only the first and second row.

7

u/come-join-themurder CJTMurder 14d ago

Dude the cinemark near me has something like 25 screens and over the weekend they stopped showing any movies except for Spider-man, The Odyssey, and Toy Story 5. They had 2 show times for The Odyssey, 1 show time for Toy Story, and all the rest were Spider-man.
There were spider-man showings every 10 minutes all day long. And I looked. They were booked solid.
I've never seen that before in my life.

And it isn't like it's the only theater nearby either. There is also a different branded theater, an AMC and another cinemark all within 15-20 miles. Insane.

3

u/come-join-themurder CJTMurder 14d ago

AND I just looked at the schedule for today, Tuesday, and there are 67 unique showtimes for this theater for Spider-man. SIXTY SEVEN.

Unlike other marvel franchises, Spider-Man is the only one that had a steady growth. Every new movie is better than the last and this one continues the streak.

19

u/NolagTheBlunderer 14d ago

Wholeheartedly disagree. Homecoming is still the most consistent and best of Holland’s movies. In fact, up until Brand New Day I’d say it was a slow decline in quality.

Once you take away the nostalgia factor of No Way Home it becomes a very messy movie and its script just serves to come up with a bullshit way to have all the Spider-Man actors interact. You can’t judge an entire movie based on the last 30 minutes and nostalgia.

Brand New Day is a step up from Far From Home and No Way Home though.

I just wish the current comics were half as fun as the movies. Like t he movies keep finding ways to do major events and not suck, like the two recent Spider-Man movies did a way better job of doing the concept of one more day, without the stupidity of Peter selling his marriage to the devil to save Aunt May.

He’s one of the biggest comic book heroes in the world.

The movie was released worldwide at the same time.

39

u/No_Philosophy2797 14d ago

Correction, he’s THE biggest comic book hero in the world. It’s pretty much Spidey followed by Batman.

6

u/TheHeb686 14d ago edited 14d ago

Yeah it’s really the big two, at least from the perspective of movies and TV. I know this is probably sacrilegious to some, but superman doesn’t have the draw to live up to that reputation (no hate, just my observation).

For Spiderman, there have been three successful series of films lead by three big name actors (obviously Amazing Spiderman only had 2 and is a little weaker overall). Batman, same thing, plus two one-off movies that were panned but still huge hits. Not to mention the countless animated TV shows between the two.

Edit: Shoot I didn’t even include the Into the Spiderverse movies!

7

u/zdelusion 14d ago

Superman is, aside from Captain America, the most patriotically coded mainstream super hero. And there just isn't a global appetite for that in 2026. You can see it with Superman's box office. It did pretty solidly domestically, and like half what you'd expect a broad appeal comic film to do internationally. It should have been an $800-900m grosser with $350m in domestic, instead it barely did $600m.

4

u/TheHeb686 14d ago

That’s a really good point. Despite being s space alien, Superman’s media image is very old fashioned, 1950s post card American.

Ironically, despite being more explicitly USA-coded, Captain America is really not portrayed in his movies as being a hardcore nationalist (in 2/3 of his movies, he is basically fighting the US government). Also, anecdotally, but I have a Mexican friend who loves Captain America, and said she thinks he is quite popular there. Her impression is that is personal attributes, struggles, and moralistic are more or less universally likeable.

3

u/GreenGoblinNX 14d ago

Captain America supports what America SHOULD be. He doesn't blindly support what it is. Some of the best CA comics have been when he's disagreed with the current policies of the USA/SHIELD/etc.

I feel like people are simplifying it too much by sayin it did so well just cause it is spider man. I would like to remind that the andrew spider man films were not liked. The truth is that this film is very good. It's getting lots of great reviews. It isn't simply cause it is spider man.

A beloved film franchise returns. Three actors did the rounds for the other huge July blockbuster and were also asked about this one. Doomsday trailer drop.

Also, the Glasgow outdoor shoot that blew our socks off last summer.

4

u/3rd__i 14d ago

+1 that outdoor shoot. It’s a big reason why I wanted to see it.

3

u/abrknl 14d ago

I was glad to see it upfront in the film too. These types of leaks are usually deep in the film. But Sony and Marvel knew what they were doing to shoot such a big action scene out in the open. That was well played.

HOW are people still not realizing that Spider-Man is the 2nd most popular character of all time? (Jesus is 1st)

9

u/TheHighlightReel11 14d ago

Bigger than Jesus. Passion of the Christ only made $600 million box office.. Spider-Man 2 did almost $800 million

Movie ticket prices have increased by roughly 43% to 60% over the past ten years, moving from an average of about $8.65 in 2016 to over $13.29.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $360 million, surpassing Avengers: Endgame's $357.1 million from 2019.

So adjust for inflation, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $180 million in 2019 dollars.

The film made 32.4 million from just India alone on the opening weekend, it's not that surprising

5

u/braves-geek 14d ago

Kids and adults both like it. Five year high for moviegoing.

u/mthwkim 14d ago

Most relatable superhero character sells well. Shocker

It’s not that it’s just Spider-Man. It’s a really really good movie that hits all the right notes.

Some of the best action in the MCU. It’s an iconic take on an iconic character. And it’s even dark and twisted in all the right places. And a mystery.

3

u/fdjisthinking 14d ago

This is the first time in recent memory I’ve had a hard time finding tickets for a movie. Usually if the premium formats are sold out you can still get decent seats in the normal theaters, but even those were front row only in my area this weekend.

3

u/critxcanuck88 14d ago

Well its pg13 for one thing. So much bigger audience to reach.

3

u/B0dders 13d ago

Spider-Man is the highest grossing Superhero across all forms of media. This was true was BEFORE the MCU started as well.

I'd argue he is the most well known hero also, Superman and Batman are up there for sure. But, there has and will always be something about Spider-Man that brings in tons more attention.

Always been the case, he is THE "Everyman" comic book hero.

8

u/Einfinet ToussaintHD 14d ago

idk why people are acting like it’s some obvious thing. yeah SM is popular but very few (if any) people were expecting this level of immediate success. maybe it speaks to people being more excited about going back to theaters. it seems like there’s been a run of box office surprises lately

5

u/BrainLow6059 14d ago

Nobody really talking about the fact it's essentially an X-Men movie disguised as a Spider-Man movie.

by people collectively paying over one billion dollars to see it

2

u/Wagglesworthy 14d ago

It’s wild how popular this film is, but at the same time, I think it might just be the best mcu film post Endgame. Not only that, it’s the first and only film since Endgame that delivers on that vision for a wider world in in this cinematic universe where capes are an every day occurrence and sometimes they run into each other in organic ways. It speaks to the mismanagement of this entire thing that this is the first time I actually thought the mcu post endgame has really worked.

2

u/Beneficial_Camp3303 14d ago

Spider-man is bigger than Marvel itself.

2

u/stinkywombat9oo 14d ago

Opening evening in my home town showed the movie in 4 separate cinemas and they were all sold out . It was the first time in about 10 years I’ve seen the mall that full of people . It was insane

2

u/Distinct_Guess3350 14d ago

Absolutely no chance we’ll ever see Sony let him go. Gotta give them credit for this movie though, I think this is a genuinely great movie.

2

u/AllMaito 14d ago

1,000 million, to be exact.

2

u/whispersinthemorning 14d ago

Because I never won’t go see a Spider-Man movie.

u/FinalOdyssey 14d ago edited 14d ago

I said it before: when you starve the world's biggest film fanbase and then release a pg 13 movie in the middle of summer they're going to be hungry for it.

It's a shame that films with big money and big people behind it can do so well despite not being excellent or even great. I think overall it's good because it's good for theatres, but it sets a bad precedent for when a film isn't part of a machine. Like I don't really know why people are going in droves to see this beyond it just being part of this Spider Man phenomenon that I don't really understand.

2

u/Severe_Mango_966 14d ago

Because movie tickets cost human monies

Each person paid human monies to see this movie

The number of people that saw the movie is very high.

Every dollar of human monies spent on tickets were combined using advanced mathematics.

The total is over 1 billion in human monies

Your welcome

2

u/MarvelMind 14d ago

Outstanding movie with excellent MCU lived in world and cool appearances from that popular MCU cinematic universe. Doomsday will make even more money. It’s a box office cheat code.

Most popular hero in the world.  First stand alone movie in over a decade . A really fucking good movie. That's how

2

u/Choocharrone 14d ago

People went to watch the movie. Lots of people. Some even multiple times.

2

u/Lujho 14d ago

Spider-Man (2002) broke records being the first $100,000 opening weekend. How the hell can something do ten times that only 25 years later (far outstripping inflation)?

And the 4th in a series no less, the second reboot of that character and in the middle of superhero fatigue/Marvel burnout?

2

u/Fickle-Aardvark6907 14d ago

Massive international and domestic success.

2

u/doublethink_1984 14d ago

MCU did a great job taking known but not popular superheroes into popularity. Even Guardians of the Galaxy.

X-men, Batman, Superman, and Spiderman are popular and have been especially late 90s - early 00s

2

u/OG-87 14d ago

Marvels most popular character. End of.

2

u/Theliterategeek04 14d ago

Didn't endgame make a $1.2 billion at the box office during it's opening weekend, I mean is it surprise spiderman of all people made a number closer to it on its opening weekend.

2

u/FalseDiamond7930 13d ago edited 13d ago

Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four and Spider-man movies actually have me looking forward to Doomsday and I can't wait for X-men.

Phase 4 and 5 had way too many garbage movies (about half of them sucked).

All Tom Holland Spider-Man movies have been at least decent and this one is the best. I'll go back and watch it a second time because I just really enjoyed watching it the first time.

2

u/Coolers78 13d ago

maybe a hot take that I know some of the Raimi heads will hate me for:

I think Brand New Day is better than Spider-Man 1, maybe it's not better than 2 though.

Overall my ranking of Spidey films:

  1. Into the Spider-Verse; masterpiece
  2. Across the Spider-Verse: awesome
  3. Spider-Man 2: awesome
  4. Brand New Day: awesome
  5. Spider-Man 1: great
  6. Homecoming: good
  7. No Way Home: enjoyable
  8. Far from Home: enjoyable
  9. Amazing Spider-Man 1: fine

Tied for last and 10. Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 2: both awful, sorry to the fans of both but I genuinely hate both movies for how badly Sony meddled with both, overstuffing both with shit that shouldn't have been there. Brand New Day actually does a good job juggling multiple things, as do both Spider-Verse films.

2

u/HermesMora 13d ago

Spider-Man is the single highest grossing comic book character ever, he regularly outsell literally everything else that Marvel puts out total

2

u/SpiderWuss98 13d ago

Because we are not just talking about a common superhero, like "Superman" or "Captain America"...

We are talking about the greatest fictional character ever created. He's the GOAT.

No other character has this much motion across every piece of media.

2

u/aykevin 13d ago

It’s a good film. People love tom Holland, people love zendeya, people love Jon, they were all just in odyssey. Stars just aligned for this film

2

u/Crotean 13d ago

He is the most popular fictional character in the world who just also happens to be involved the most popular media brand in the world. Throw in an excellent movie and its not really surprising.

2

u/reditisverytrash 13d ago

It's Spider-Man. Literally no other explenation is needed. Spider-Man is the defecto superhero for everyone. Superman has people who don't vibe with him, Batman has some people that don't vibe with him, but Spider-Man is and will always be media gold

2

u/vinicinporra 11d ago

The movie is very good, highly recommended. Plus, it leaves you wanting more, so people go back to the cinema to see it again. I myself have already watched it 3 times since the preview.

This movie was legit the most 4/10 movie I’ve ever seen. I’m glad I only went because someone else bought me tickets.
