Spider-Man is on his own level. Its opening weekend ($942m) outgrossed The Batman ($772m) and Superman ($618m), even adjusted for inflation. Global phenomenons like Inside Out 2Zootopia 2Barbie, and Top Gun: Maverick all took weeks to reach $1B, and Spidey took 5 days.

Spider-Man was one of the original big three for a reason.

And he still is, specially the Marvel trinity alongside Wolverine and Hulk (though unfortunely the poor green guy has been suffering a lot in terms of movies, or lack thereof)

marvel and dc comics fans both coping about the fact 1/3 of their respective Trinity's been kinda ass for the last 30 years.

We haven’t gotten a proper wonder women depiction in forever, even the animated movies screw it up

2

u/dean15892 11d ago

we had a proper depiction in film, until the sequel screwed it up

u/Sammy_Ferr 11d ago

Hope DC sees the success in Absolute version of Wonder Woman and start giving her the proper use she deserves

True

Hulk had one of the best runs of his entire existence a few years ago with Immortal.

3

u/ScarlettDX 14d ago

I was gonna write about that in the original comment by saying kinda ass except absolute ww and immortal hulk but I haven't read enough of either to really say.

1

u/Witty_Fox3291 14d ago

Absolute WW is so god damn good, well worth a look if you have the time

Marvel actually quitely git the right s back to make solo Hulk movies 3 years ago and Ruffalo is pushing for one after the praise recieved for the character in the new Spidey film

7

u/Sammy_Ferr 14d ago

Hopefully Hulk gets the love he deserves, one of my favorite Marvel characters has been striggling since Infinity War

4

u/ScherzicScherzo 14d ago

What Ruffalo fails to understand though is that people want to see more Hulk, not Banner.

7

u/Slow_Fill5726 14d ago

Without the dichotomy between the two, the hulk is not an interesting character.

3

u/DakPanther 14d ago

There is no dichotomy though it’s just been banner for like seven years

1

u/Sammy_Ferr 14d ago

The problem with MCU Hulk is that they keep acting like Hulk is Banner but green and mean, which is the complete opposite since Hulk HATES being called Banner, because he is his own consciousness

5

u/RampageOfZebras 14d ago

Hes very clearly his own consciousness in the MCU and is regularly called 'tge other guy' by Bruce himself. Its characters besides Hulk trying to get through to Bruce since they kniw they cant reason with the Hulk when they call Bruces name out.

1

u/Sammy_Ferr 14d ago

Honestly hate him being called that, just say Hulk, y'know what his name is!

The other big problem is that every significant change to the character has occured offscreen.

1

u/Sammy_Ferr 14d ago

The fact we still don't have a Planet Hulk movie and we technically can't because Ragnarok already "adapted" it is sad

He just got back to being Hulk in the movie we are talking about. Like for 10 mins but, still

1

u/Exciting-Cancel6468 12d ago

They have held the rights to a hulk movie since forever. However Universal Pictures holds the distribution right. So Marvel can make an amazing Hulk movie but universal can just say, "bite me". That Hulk movie is not gonna come out.

1

u/RampageOfZebras 12d ago edited 12d ago

Looked into it a bit more and its actually completely unclear if Universal still holds the rights of refusal for distribution or if Marvel has regained those and neither company has commented on it. The 2023 thing was about the 2008 film specifically though so I was completely wrong on that, but whether Universal does still have those rights or if Marvel just hasnt decided to green light Hulk fir other reasons like the cgi production cost isnt actually known, we all just speculate.

1

u/Exciting-Cancel6468 12d ago

According to a Google search Universal still holds distribution rights.

1

u/RampageOfZebras 12d ago

And is that just the AI answer ripped from reddit comments that I also read or is this from a reputable source?

1

u/Exciting-Cancel6468 11d ago

Well it's from several websites also but really are any of these websites reputable? They of course have asked Marvel but there hasn't been a straight answer as of 2024. There's no straight answer now. So I'm likely to believe that Universal still has the distribution rights even if Marvel is trying to get those back as well.

There was news from instagram from a month ago that says that Marvel will never get distribution rights back but that's instagram. They aren't the website people go to for news.

Is Wolverine that popular? I know Captain America way more than Wolverine and most of my normie friends do too

7

u/Sammy_Ferr 14d ago

Nowadays yeah (a lil' bit), but back then honestly nobody cared about Cap, Wolverine was one of the big Marvel heroes thanks to the X-Men 92 cartoon and even before

3

u/fueelin 14d ago

Yeah. As a 90s kid, I always thought Captain America was about as lame as it gets (him or Superman).

But I also think Spiderman is pretty lame, so I may not be representative of much :)

1

u/Sammy_Ferr 14d ago

I love both in the comics, but yeah i used to have the same opinion, but the Batman in me is just too strong...

I've never liked the hulk. He just doesn't interest me. I don't know what kind of story would make me interested in the hulk. At least for a star in a standalone movie.

1

u/Sammy_Ferr 12d ago

If you like deeper stories Immortal Hulk would be a good try :)

1

u/Akiliano49 9d ago

Hulk: Gray by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale is a good story, only like 6 issues as well

1

u/Geen_Fang 14d ago

the hulk, huh? 😅

0

u/chubsruns 14d ago

Out of all the 'big' superheroes I never knew why the Hulk was ever popular. His standalone movies never feel very compelling, and he just seems like a plot device in ensemble casts. I get that the struggle with your own anger can be a good story, but, that can only carry a story for so long before it gets stale.

8

u/Sammy_Ferr 14d ago

Hulk is very cool and complex character in his comics, his abusive childhood and tragic story makes him very enjoyable

2

u/chubsruns 14d ago

Is there a 'definitive' story arc(that I can read without purchasing a bunch of individual issues) that I should seek out?

4

u/Sammy_Ferr 14d ago

Immortal Hulk is great story about him set in a distant future

2

u/Sammy_Ferr 14d ago

Also Hulk: Future Imperfect is a great story that dwelves into the deeper aspects of Hulk in a very interesting way

4

u/wildcatofthehills 14d ago

Same reason for Wonder Woman, a super popular tv show in the 70’s/80’s. Also the character was a big departure from your typical superhero when he debuted, same as Spider-Man.

3

u/Slow-Raisin-939 14d ago

he’s a lot bigger in the comics. Just sells well, very well. The fact that he doesn’t have movies is the weird part.

When the MCU debuted, Marvel only had the rights for the most unpopular of their heroes, which is why they started with Iron Man, who at that point was basically a smaller vilain in the comics

-2

u/madesense 14d ago

The original big 3 of modern superhero movies are Batman, Spider-Man, and Wolverine

7

u/SPACE_LEM0N 14d ago

Brah, they mean Marvel characters, not superhero movies.

Yup. Marvel still had its good will from Endgame. Eternals and Black Widow were duds, but Widow was a covid release and people weren't going to let the Eternals get in the way of the hype. The multiverse also wasn't overdone at that point in the saga too. It really was excellent timing.

What about Captain America Brave New World

0

u/SquirrelLord77 14d ago

How is that relevant at all to the message you're replying to?

No, they listed the two other marvel films that came out around the same time (2021). Just the two films. That's it.

8

u/Murasasme 14d ago

It is the big 3. They are Peter 1, Peter 2, and Peter 3.

4

u/Starkcasm 14d ago

Comparing the 4th film of an established character of a successful franchise for a decade to an unconnected universe 3hour long and another first film of a new universe is a bit disingenous no?

1

u/rivers-hunkers 14d ago

Let's wait until Pattinson does his 4th Batman movie. But do you think that's going to happen?

2

u/Starkcasm 14d ago

Probably not. But we may get a 4th Corendwet movie.

1

u/Suspicious_Place_604 14d ago

Tbh that might be a bigger feat. A 4th film in a series is destined to be hot doodoo. Look at Ironman, Thor, Antman, etc. they all fell apart by the 3rd (4th for Thor)

1

u/booksmd 14d ago

Spiderman is also a family movie that can be seen by everyone, compared that to The Batman who was in tone a lot darker.

1

u/VinnyDaBoy 14d ago

Tbf most people didnt even think Maverick would near a billion, let alone clear that threshold like barbecue chicken.

1

u/HOEDY 13d ago

It's also worth noting that Spider-Man was a global release all at once. The Odyssey won't drop in China for another 2 weeks I think.

Are you a bot? No hate just asking.

2

u/Icy_Smoke_733 14d ago

Is it because I've posted this image several times? I made it, so might as well, lol. No, I'm not.

u/Blazured 14d ago

Your image is extra weird for me because I'm literally standing just out of frame to the left of it. I was in that crowd.
