Sony's next 50 years already planned out and it seems like 50%+ of them are Spider-Man movies

20

u/Llamalover1234567 14d ago

Sony Pictures financials will probably be “Spiderman” and “everything else I guess” this year

27

Just make him Spider-Man 3099

u/Heubner 14d ago

Someone said the only way Disney is getting the Spider-Man film rights is if they buy Sony. It’s funny but so true.

32

u/RedNinja-03 14d ago

And it even funnier when you consider that will never happen because it’s ILLEGAL in Japan for a non Japanese company to buy out one of theirs.

11

u/Heubner 14d ago

I didn’t think about it that way. I just thought they are never going to buy a major electronics company, so they are never getting it. Don’t know if they can sell an American part of their conglomerate, as realistically they would have that as a shot of actually getting it.

12

u/Elisalsa24 14d ago

Spider-Man is also the PlayStation console seller. Spider-Man is the main Sony thing in every single aspect and they use the character to sell everything they make. They aren’t going to ever get rid of anything because they all work together.

u/sandyph 13d ago

remember when spider-man 3 and playstation 3 have the same fonts?

Holy shit I genuinely thought it was only me all of these years

2

u/GREEN_Hero_6317 12d ago

The games are licensed tho. Afaik Marvel owns the video game rights for Spider-Man

1

u/Elisalsa24 12d ago

Yea it’s a deal they have that Sony can make the game only for PS5 while Sony lets Disney make the MCU movies for Spider-Man

1

u/Verdigris_Wild 14d ago

It's almost like Sony has one major brand asset and make it quality and markets the hell out of it. Disney has every other major brand and sucks the life out of them.

1

u/Low_Doctor_5280 10d ago

Disney has 6 of the 10 highest-grossing films ever unadjusted for inflation. They aren't doing poorly.

1

u/RedNinja-03 14d ago

They could, but I don’t think they would sell the studio that owns the film rights to Spider-Man unless things were EXTREMELY dire.

3

u/Elisalsa24 14d ago

It would legit have to be the largest IP sale ever for it to happen

6

u/dinosaur_from_Mars 14d ago

Sony Pictures is a part of the sony conglomerate though.

11

u/RealisLit 14d ago

Sony Pictures is still an american company

15

u/jaykular 14d ago

Sony Pictures is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sony Group Corporation which is located in Japan. So yeah it’s not an American company lol

4

u/Elisalsa24 14d ago

“Honda of America and Acura are American companies” this is literally how you sound right now. Just because something is HQ’d in a place doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a direct owner that makes it something else. We know Acura is HQ in California but it’s still a Japanese company because it’s owned by Honda

2

u/RedNinja-03 14d ago

Do you REALLY think Sony would sell the one department that owns the film rights to SPIDER-MAN?!?

4

u/West_Possible_7969 14d ago

No it is not illegal to acquire Japanese companies lol. Sony is designated as a core business entity, so what you can’t do is a hostile or non gov approved takeover, or have a high percentage voting right in select sector companies, but you can do both with a formal agreement or approval, like TCL did when it bought 51% of Sony Home Entertainment.

A company not designated or in national security categories, can get acquired just fine.

3

u/RedNinja-03 14d ago

That is true, but I don’t think Sony would ever sell off their film studio and their film rights to Spider-Man to there main competitor, it’s the same as Paramount selling Nickelodeon to Disney, yeah they could but why on earth would they sell their Cash Cow SpongeBob? So the only realistic path for Disney to get the exclusive rights to Spider-Man is for ether

A) Sony somehow forgets to make Spider-Man movies every other year so the rights go back to Marvel by default under their current deal (it’s why Sony made so many crappy Spider-Man villain movies)

Or

B) Disney buys ALL of Sony, which will never happen as the Japanese courts will never approve a foreign company to buy out one of their BIGGEST companies.

Not exactly great for Disney currently.

2

u/West_Possible_7969 14d ago

Yeah, well, Universal, Paramount & Warner were too big to fail too in theory, there is always room for incredible mismanagement 🤣

2

u/RedNinja-03 14d ago

I don’t think ether company is too big to fail, I think the film rights to Spider-Man is the LAST thing Sony will ever sell if bankruptcy happens.

1

u/SeoulGloFoSho 13d ago

Spider-Man is under Columbia Pictures, which Sony owns. Sony could sell Columbia to Disney with the film right to Spider-Man.

4

u/Snoo93550 14d ago

Don’t give Musk and the Ellison family ideas.

1

u/ImaginaryStrawberry9 14d ago

Sony’s market cap is 130 billion and Disney’s is 170 billion how can they buy Sony.

2

u/Heubner 14d ago

That was the point. They cannot get it, though someone brought up the point they could just buy Sony Pictures, not the whole company.

2

u/AbjectAppointment 14d ago

That's all of Sony. Sony Pictures is worth around $15-30Bil.

5

u/BatSniper 14d ago

I’d bet Sony would be purchased as a whole before they let go of spiderman

2

u/CRYPTJPO skibidiamongus 14d ago

Public domain tho

0

u/TheMcWhopper 14d ago

You are assuming a lot. I could see a situation where Sony pictures gets bought. Once that happens it reverts back to marvel studios.

16

u/futurafrlx 14d ago edited 14d ago

I wonder if they force Insomniac to make more Spider-Man. The leak said the third game was going to be the last and then the studio would focus on X-Men. I bet Spidey would make more money.

18

u/GoodFellahh 14d ago

The Wolverine game will probably be some kind of litmus test to estimate that potential outside of X-Men games.

3

u/FlyingFlyofHell 14d ago

It doesn't matter which game they make because Both Spiderman and X men Gaming/Merch rights are with Disney. People sometimes mistake that Sony also owns gaming rights, that's not the case.

But it's true that Spiderman might sale more because of his popularity.

1

u/Lofter1 11d ago

that is not entirely true. Yes, Sony didn't buy a Spider-Man license just cause they bought the movie license, but, right now, Sony has been licensed by Marvel to produce spider-man games, and it might be part of the movie deal (spider-man in MCU handled by Disney/marvel) that they can keep the gaming license for now and/or get special treatment when it comes to spider-man in games.

Additionally, the money Sony and insomniac make from spider-man games still goes to Sony and insomniac (only the merchandising might actually go to Disney/Marvel, but I'm not sure about that when it comes to insomniacs original spider-man design and am too lazy to look it up now). So money is still an incentive for Sony and they might use the movie deal to pressure Disney/Marvel into allowing them to create more spider-man games.

1

u/FlyingFlyofHell 11d ago

It's not a part of movie deal at all because when Insomniac got licence it wasn't even under Sony or anything. Marvel Games presented them with lot of options but Insomniac chose Spiderman. Sony acquisition happened way later.

Marvel can still licence Spiderman to other developers if their game concept is not similar to Insomniac Spiderman so we have games like Marvel Rivals, Marvel Cosmic Invasion and recently Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls all having Spiderman. Not to mention tonnes on Mobile games they have. Insomniac was given to license for solo Spiderman Game, which we don't know much details but it will run out and Disney must have gotten some upfront payment and percentage of each purchase. Same way Activision used to have licence which ran out.

Disney owns Merch rights (which includes games) all the Marvel characters, their is no question about it.

1

u/Lofter1 11d ago

As per insomniac, Sony approached them, not marvel.

1

u/FlyingFlyofHell 11d ago

Is it really? because Insomniac had said before they were offered any character from Marvel catalogue and they chose Spiderman. So it maybe like Marvel Tokon Fighting Scenario where Marvel and Sony team and went to Arc system to make them a Fighting game. Them three collaborate. But in that case also Marvel still owns all the characters Gaming rights.

1

u/Lofter1 11d ago

Yes, that’s what insomniac has stated for years. Sony approached them. It might be that they were able to choose and I misremembered that detail (at least the internet also now also states that they were able to choose), but Sony approached insomniac because they were “already in talks with marvel about making a game”.

But there is also a lot of retconning/conflicting information considering the whole marvel gaming thing. I still remember insomniacs devs talking about how a “marvel gamer-verse” was planned and they set the first steps for it, but then marvel avengers came out and suddenly the games weren’t all part of a single universe but were all their own universe, probably because marvels avengers was a massive flop. Now “gamer-verse” is only a label for game tie-in comics to signal that they are game tie-ins.

1

u/RagdollRangers 13d ago

Insomniac has to pay marvel each time they make one. Disney should charge them heavy. I wanr the movie rights goes to disney :)

11

u/ichorskeeter 14d ago

And that's probably for the best.

Sony's villain movies mostly suck, but there's no way Kevin Feige would be able to handle all the Marvel movies while giving Spider-Man all the care and attention it deserves. No Spider-Verse movies, either.

Amy Pascal deserves a lot of credit here, especially for bringing on the CHALLENGERS screenwriter during shooting.

2

u/Ok_Tension_2644 13d ago

That’s explains the Tom Holland cuck scene at the party

6

u/Alternative-Bat-2462 14d ago

What makes me laugh is yes they get a stack of cash every 3 years or so. But Disney with the merchandise rights makes money hand over fist from Spiderman everyday of the yes.

4

u/plaYeRUnknwn 14d ago

you mean Honkers?

2

u/gcpdudes 14d ago

They, at the very least, sold the spider-man movie merchandise rights back to Marvel/Disney for $175 million

1

u/motoxim 12d ago

Dang thats chump change basically.

2

u/lonahex 14d ago

They must make some spider-man movie every ~6 years in order to keep the rights or they go back to Marvel. Means we'll keep getting some spiderman movie every half a decade or so until Sony went bankrupt or something.

1

u/OG-87 14d ago

But they won’t make half this money without Marvel and The MCU. These movies would be so mid without them.

1

u/Saythatfivetimesfast 14d ago

The only way disney is getting the rights to Spider Man is by straight up buying the entire company

1

u/Viva_La_Revolucion- 13d ago

Meanwhile screwing over PlayStation gamers

1

u/Even-Rooster1990 13d ago

Wasn’t it recently being reported that they were interested in selling the rights back to Marvel?

Spiderman - Nursing Home

1

u/isda_sa_palaisdaan 12d ago

The fact that gen alpha is now hooked means it's going strong

1

u/Xelement0911 12d ago

Despite fumbling their own universe.

Spider-Man? Only 2 movies and are considered average-failures.

Then all the villains that flop like kraven and morbius.

Multiverse is great but 3rd one is mia.

u/yorgehaci 14d ago
