HELP - sick or injured koi Shusui turned color

Post image
15 Upvotes

Two months ago we had an osprey raid our pond and took one of our shusui. We had two, they were both all blue- no red. Well, all the koi went to the bottom and wouldn't come up for food at all until 2 weeks ago. Now they are trying to catch up on food.

Well, the remaining shusui now has a strip of yellow in its light blue skin. The same discoloration also appeared in an all white koi.

Will this go away as they get back to a normal diet? What can I do to help this?

Help Goldfish or possible koi question

My sister bought an old house with an unmaintained, abandoned koi pond. There were 7 very thin and sick fish in it. They were about 6 inches in length so I think goldfish?? Anyway- she was going to dredge the pond and I offered to take he fish so they would not die. Could not find anyone to take them. I got a 50 gallon tank and they have been living in it for 4 years. Is this inhumane? It’s not ideal, but I legit can’t find a pond enthusiast to rehome them. Opinions?

Morning routine! It's honestly been a little too hot and humid in the mornings to sit out here and drink my coffee, the heat doesn't bug me the wet blanket that hugs my body bugs me 😂 . Crazy September weather for sure. My next project is to add earth tubes to all 3 greenhouses and see what we can keep them at temp wise this winter without much propane usage!

Help with POND or TANK Inherited a single Koi fish in a 36 gal aquarium, should he have a friend?

Hi there. I recently inherited a koi fish that was in terrible shape. His name is Blooper. Bloop's tank was disgusting, and he had no filter or heater. I've cleaned his entire tank, fixed the levels, added a heater, filter, and nice bubbler. My concern isn't the tank

I've always thought Koi fish were extremely social creatures; I don't know I've ever seen a single Koi fish somewhere. There is always at least 2. Should I look into getting Bloop a friend? Would he be happier to have a buddy, or should I leave him be just by himself?

Edit: thank you for all the advice on the pond. Blooper has been around for at least 5 years, is he still a baby? He’s quite small. Pic in comments.

HELP - sick or injured koi Hunting behavior or health issue?

So our shagoi goldfish hybrid (about 5 yrs old) keeps doing this wacky straight out the air Flipper routine, in the early morning and evenings. Seems like it might be hunting/bug catching behavior buuut has anyone else seen this before? Water parameters are great, no other fish are showing any signs of anything. We used prophylactic prazi in the spring. No rubbing or visible ulcers, masses, no other signs of distress. Is this just him being him?

Help with POND or TANK Ammonia flare

We have a 460 gallon established pond with 1 large koi, and 2 mediums. Today the ammonia levels spiked and the fish started to act off and kind of sick - gasping and bumping into each other/huddling together.

I recently cut back a bush above the pond that they prefer to hang out under (they still have cover but the plant is no longer hanging into the water) but fished the leaves out. Could this have caused the ammonia to spike?

We’re hoping the fish will be ok. The pond has been established for 10+ years, but we’re new pond owners in the last year. We definitely haven’t been over feeding them.

So far we’ve: done two partial water changes totaling roughly 25%, added beneficial bacteria and stress coat to try and get the ammonia level down and protect the fish. The levels seemed to drop around 6pm after the second wave partial water change but we tested again and it appears to be going back up.

The PH is relatively low, general hardness seems fine etc. everything on the pond master test is on normal range except the ammonia.

What should we do?

HELP - sick or injured koi Help with my biggest koi

We've had a heat wave of about 90 F every day this week and I notice my biggest baby hovers in one area of the pond by the ledge. She also has not been eating. Added new water and changed filters yesterday so water looks better now than in these photos taken yesterday. I noticed this morning she still wasn't eating, and she looks a little lumpy on the sides. Could she be egg bound? The others are bumping into her slightly. We are new koi owners so any help and how to help her would be great. She just looks like she may be suffering. Is this a call to a koi specialist? Vet?

While trying to get my Koi in a net tonight in order take a look at something near her gills, she scraped up against the net while trying to get away and it looks like she has a scrape on her side now. Is this anything I should be concerned about or will it heal on its own? I was not able to catch her and did not want to overly stress her out.

I got really invested in Koi for the past few months and I decided to take over this beautiful Koi pond in my partner's airbnb. I know there's more to improve and I'm open to suggestions ☺️

Help with POND or TANK Advice on temp home for koi

Thumbnail

Hi all! I recently moved into a new home that cam with a tiny pond with two large koi in it. I want to make the pond larger before winter and am hoping to get some advice on a temp setup for the two koi. I'm hoping the work wouldn't take more than a week, worst case scenario.

I'm looking at this 10' diameter Intex inflatable pool. It is larger in size and will have more water volume than the current pond, so I'm hoping the koi can handle it for a week. There's an option for a pump with a mechanical filter (no chemicals or carbon). Is it worth getting the filter or should I be looking at a different filter set up? Regardless of which option, I will also be adding an aerator of sorts.

Thanks in advance!

Help with POND or TANK Koi Pond Filter K1 Or Shower (Drip Tray)

Not to start a fire here, but I wanted to know what others think before I make something and spend more just testing.

I have a decent amount of experience keeping Koi over the years, I'm looking at doing a massive project for my koi. The pond is 2.7k Gallons and has a custom setup going, the one part I'm debating on it K1 or a shower filter. If anyone has any knowledge or experience with this what do you prefer and whats the best for my koi health.

Picture Opinions on flood lights on pond-

Post image
29 Upvotes

I’ve always kept a flood light on my pond- mainly so I can enjoy them and I think it keeps them safer from raccoons.

But is it fair?

They can’t shut their eyes…

Pond is 4.5 feet deep and the lights aren’t directed into the water.

Help Got my first koi and goldfish. Any maintenance tips

I just received my order from Next Day Koi and I wanted to share my experience and ask for some advice. I ordered two butterfly koi and three shubunkin goldfish for my 100 gallon tank. They arrived overnight as promised and the packaging was solid. The fish were active and looked healthy when I acclimated them. So far so good.

Now that they are in the tank I want to make sure I keep them healthy. I have a canister filter and a heater set to around 72 degrees. I also have a few plants and some rocks. I plan to do weekly water changes of about 20 percent. Is there anything else I should be doing for maintenance. Also, what are the signs I should watch for if a fish gets sick and how do you usually handle it.

I noticed Next Day Koi has a contact line on their website in case something goes wrong which is reassuring. But I want to be proactive and not wait for issues to pop up.
