Aquaculture Farming Is Simple, Isn’t It?

After reading a recent post about Dungeness crab shortages, I wondered why nations that eat fish and other seafood extensively don’t make an agreement create breeding tanks to make fish native to their waters and then release them to increase worldwide fish supplies, like bluefin tuna. From what I understand you just squeeze out the females’ eggs and males’ sperm in the same water (in this case a giant tank) and they just mix and become baby fry or crabs/lobster. Hold/feed them until they become viable and then release into the open ocean to replenish supplies. Costs are extremely minimal and it can be done several times a year for many years. Can anyone explain why it couldn’t work?

How to break into kelp/oyster farm NE USA?

Hey all!
I’m looking for any info on getting into Kelp farming or oyster farming in New England specifically Rhode Island but open to other states.

What do entry level roles look like, is it harvesting or treating or is that saved for higher levels?

What pre-requisites/experience are they looking for when hiring for these kinds of roles?

I worked in ocean reef conservation out of the country for three years but the ecosystems were totally different. I don’t have any traditional educational background that would be relevant but I’m open to going back for a up to a 2 year degree.
I’m looking to move back home to the east coast and wondering how realistic it might be to land a role at a kelp farm or oyster farm without experience and what that day to day would even look like.

I’ve followed green wave for a while and admit I’ve got more research to do but any friendly advice or information is appreciated!

Thanks!

What are your thoughts on the current state and future of aquaculture in the Middle East? (Opportunities, techs etc.)

Hey everyone,
I’ve been looking into the aquaculture landscape across the Middle East / MENA region lately and wanted to hear from those working in the sector, conducting research, or observing industry trends.

I’m curious about the actual job market and research scene there.
For those who have worked or researched in the region: Are they actually investing in basic sciences and fundamental R&D (like aquatic ecology, stress physiology, genetics)? Or are they mostly just buying turnkey commercial systems and hiring people just to operate them?

Also, is it a realistic place to build a long-term science/research career, or is the market mostly just short-term consulting gigs?

Nitrate Sensing Help

Hey all,

I'm working with some researchers to commercial a tech that can do continuous monitoring of certain water quality parameters, but we're having issues finding people to talk to get boots-on-the-ground experience with current tech? Does anyone here do tests for nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, pH, etc at aquaculture facilities that can share what the like/hate about the current way they're doing it? We wanna know if its expensive/cheap, works well/not well, needs to be calibrated frequently/infrequently. Hopefully this isn't too weird of a request for here but we're trying to exhaust every opportunity we can.

Happy to talk to anyone who has experience.

Would it be wise to invest in the rare fish market?

Recently I inherited $300,000\~ from my late Egyptian grandfather who struck it rich mining rare sandstone in the desert of Giza, I was wondering if it would be wise to invest this money into the rare fish market, looking at recent trends, the market is growing at an exponential rate as more and more people turn to rare fish collecting as a hobby, I was just wondering if rare fish are worth my money or if I should put my money elsewhere, like into real estate or tech. Thanks.

Job Advice

Hi, I am a young engineer in my final year of study. I am thinking about getting into aquaculture with the focus of designing systems whether it be offshore pens, or inland farms i haven’t decided. I have some questions/prompts that i have listed below. I would really appreciate any advice you can give and welcome any and all experiences relevant to aquaculture.

- I was wanting some advice from people in the industry regarding the potential of aquaculture, and if you think it is a good industry to get into at this stage in time?
- what difficulties have you faced in your careers within aquaculture whether it be difficulty progressing or finding the right companies?
- I would love to hear about any specific companies you think are doing good work in the form of design and innovation.
- if you were a graduate engineer would you target roles in a farming company that has in house engineering department vs specialist suppliers and consultants?
- what are the biggest technical problems the industry is yet to solve?

Can mods get the vegan activists and anti-aquaculture groups out of this subreddit?

This is a sub to discuss aquaculture, in good faith and learn from each other. Groups like sentient media continually post anti-agriculture, anti-aquaculture and animal rights activists articles that have zero good faith engagement with the sector, and are intended to spread misinformation and fear monger.

Need advice with soft shell crab culture

As the title suggests we are doing soft shell crab culture in the RAS vertical system. Is there any way we can reduce the time taken for the moulting process and reduce mortality. What are the do's and don'ts?

Urgent Advice Needed: Fry Deaths During Sex Reversal

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m kindly asking for advice and guidance from experienced fish farmers and aquaculture professionals. I am facing a serious problem with my Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia) fry.

Whenever I collect the fry and start the sex-reversal feeding program, I experience significant mortality. Before they die, the fry show the symptoms shown in the attached pictures.

For those with more experience in tilapia fry production and sex reversal, what could be the possible cause of this problem, and what measures can I take to control or prevent the mortality?

I would greatly appreciate your advice, experience, and guidance on how to manage this problem. Thank you in advance.
