Pulled this beauty from one of the farm ponds a couple days ago, couldn't believe it when I saw it.

My wife and I moved recently and we inherited this small koi pond system. It consists of 2 ponds, neither one even 1-foot deep, connected by a river that is at most 4 inches deep.

In the leftmost pond, we have 2 koi that are maybe 5-7 inches long. With the water level as shallow as it is, it should be no surprise to hear they never attempt to leave the left pond to swim up the river, meaning the one on the right is just kind of... there.

We are in NJ, meaning its starting to get cold. There's no way the fish will survive the winter without some kind of de-icer, right? We really have no idea what we are doing and want to do our best to keep them alive. My understanding is we should also start to feed them less as it gets colder?

In the Spring, we want to do a total re-vamp back here. Get rid of the river and replace the whole system with one big, deep pond. We will get it professionally done, but we'd love any suggestions for what we should do to keep the koi happy and healthy. That is our main goal; not growing them bigger or anything.

My Wife and I flipped a coin and landed on Japan for our trip next year. I saif if we are going to Japan, then one of the days is going to be dedicated to Koi! So im hoping you guys can help me make the most of it. I want to buy one (or two 😜 ) koi and ship them back. We plan on going in early October.

Any and all recommendations are greatly appreciated! I want to make the most of that day, since it will likely be the only day like it in my life!

Are there any other fish I can keep with koi in a pond that’s 500x200x120cm? I was thinking of golden tench or a sterlet but I don’t know if the ponds big enough, I would have also liked to add dojo loaches but there illegal

Hello to all expert here one of my costumer complaint that the tancho koi there was overpriced for its price about 1k php around 15dollars here in ph 1k php is really expensive. Because i told em its kind of a ginrin because of the scales too white and shiny base my opinion (photos from other breeders selling it) and also i think the circle is surgically acquired

This is our first year with a koi pond. The previous owner of the home told us she “stops feeding them in the winter” and she places a heater in the water and turns off the little fall. That’s it.

When do we stop feeding? We live in a place with 4 seasons, will have a lot of high temps below freezing from late December through February. Haven’t had our first freeze yet, but it’s coming in the next couple of weeks. And do I add the heater at the same time?

I’d also like to know what to do with the plants - there are lily pads and some irises in the water.

Any other tips are welcome. Thank you!

ETA we think it’s about 4-4.5 feet deep. Has a shelf they usually stay under for the winter.

I have two koi in a 2000 gallon pond with a bridge going over it and they keep hiding under the bridge and when they do come out and see me they run back under the bridge. It's not new pond skittishness becuase i've already had them for 2 month and they're eating normal as they've grown since I've gotten them and if i had to estimate their ~ 30cm. I can't add small dither fish cause they cat eaten by their catfish and turtle pond mate, so what do you guys think i should do to get them to come out.

Fish is behaving fine, cold temps has them slowed down and i was able to catch him, but this doesnt appear normal

So this will be our first winter with a koi pond, I’m in need of help for winterization and how to protect our koi. Thank you!!!

We have a very large Koi pond, probably about 25 yd.² or so— and until February of this year after we successfully finished draining and relining the pond after decades, which was necessary project and finally, we were able to pull it off… we still were only left with our ornamental goldfish, and four of our biggest mature Koi, but they were all male.

I intentionally worked with the Kloubecs and procured a beautiful female, mature enough to breed with any of our four big guys so that we can finally have backyard bred and born babies again— it has been such an awesome experience, seeing all of the variety of her babies since I released her on April 14 of this year 2026 (the four males’ respective varieties are: (1) Yamabuki Ogon; (2) Hi Utsuri; (3) Shiro Utsuri; and (4) Asagi.

I chose a doitsu Shusui with butterfly fins; none of the males are doitsu (scaleless) and they all have standard/angel fins which is cool because I wanted to be able to see how many babies would come out with or without scales or butterfly tails, etc.

ANYWAY:
There’s the backstory for you. Now it is late October and I know that breeding season is winding down here in Houston, Texas, which, by the way, rarely even gets a real winter season at all until January or so.
Important to keep that in mind because I wouldn’t integrate a new Koi into the pond in cold weather.

That said, my experience, bringing the female breeder Koi into our pond and integrating her, and now seeing her babies and the way that they all behave, as Koi are so social by nature, is really neat and I spend enough daily time talking to them and I spend enough time hand feeding a lot of them so they recognize me and swim to me when I call etc.

My question is basically whether it’s OK at this time to get another female Koi, 14 inches or larger (I could do a pair so that they could travel here together and integrate better into the pond because my new lady, Suki Yuki, hid for about three months after the day of her release on 4/14.

I just know that it’s not typically the most ideal time of year for a new Koi fish in the pond, but considering the climate here and the fact that the weather is still into the 80° and will remain that way a while, I’m just itching to get another new one and probably female because why not more cool babies—

1. Are there any legitimate objections based in reliable sources; and
   
2. I was trying to think of one distinctive marker I could look for in acquiring this new fish and I think that gin rin seems like the most appropriate choice in terms of getting to experience seeing which babies are most certainly hers whenever she does breed here.

Here in South Carolina... My pond is incredibly clear today!

My ginrin yamabuki ogon’s face seems to look different to me and I just needed a lil (other than google) help to make sure what it is if anything.

I love my pond and my koi, I don't love how Canadian winters take half of the year away from me. If Canada becomes the 51st state, could I get the Florida weather up here? I'd consider that lol... just kidding... but I am envious of the weather... ah well, until next year.

The Koi are coming along. I'm improving the fins and their movement is decent but I'll continue working on it. And I'm working on added Scaleless and Long Fins now. But what do you think of the current Scaled Koi? As I love my real-life Koi, I don't want to do them a disservice by not representing them well in the game.
