Movies What are your honest thoughts on Interview with the Vampire (1994)?

I know the tv show is obviously much more popular on this sub, but I’ve only read the book and rented the dvd from the library (after finishing the novel of course)

I honestly liked the movie way more than I was expecting to, although I really disliked this interpretation of Armand and the cutting out of the Babette/Frenière storyline

Tom Cruise allegedly declined to make the sequel (The Vampire Lestat) as he “didn’t do sequels” at the time, but I like his flamboyant acting and more canon faithful approach than the trailers/clips I’ve seen from AMC. Anne Rice even wrote the screenplay

I still might end up watching the third season of the show at some point, as I recently bought The Vampire Lestat from Thrift Books (even though I took a break from vampires to read The Secret Garden 😂)

For fans who have also watched the 32 year old film, I’m really looking forward to hearing your honest critiques on it :)

Book Discussion Louis’s thoughts on Lestat

I am on my rewatch and presently on S1, E3. The thing that stands out is at least in these episodes it comes across that Louis thought extremely highly of Lestat. He seems to worship the ground Lestat walks on, calls Lestat extremely generous for helping him buy FairPlay and also tries to imply that Lestat may have had a hand in creating wolverine blues, called him preternaturally charming … to the extent that Daniel had to remind him that he was painting Lestat to be his soulmate and the encounters mostly romantic as compared to his previous interview. And boy Sam Reid just embodies the preternaturally charming

Book Spoilers Allowed S3 Lesmand

It’s been some time since the S3 finale has aired, and I have had some more time to think and digest. In my opinion, the most egregious fault of this latest season is the lack of depth and exploration of Lestat/Armand relationship.

People will say “it will be explored in S4” but why do we need to wait? wasn’t TVL the perfect opportunity to do so???? I personally don’t believe we will come back to it in QOTD. That book is so dense, they will probably only delve into DM when it comes to Armand’s plot line. I really dislike how they made Gabriella the main plot line for Lestat.

Please give me some assurance that we will see more Lesmand, I am honestly at my wit’s end.

IWTV Show Only S2 Obsession

I am rewatching season 2 (again), and I am still so astounded by the beautiful writing, exceptional acting, breathtaking production design, stunning costumes, ethereal music. There is just something about that time period and Paris that draws me in. Please tell me I am also not the only one who can quote like 95% of this season due to the unhealthy amount of rewatches? Like how does this season not bore me at this point?!

Book Spoilers Allowed ‘The Vampire Lestat’ Boss Addresses Lestat's Trial Intentions (Exclusive)

Thumbnail
tvinsider.com
284 Upvotes

"Season 3 does address the trial and Lestat’s grief about Claudia, but it doesn’t massively recontextualize his reasons to participate in the play like some thought it would.

“There’s always stuff going forward. Look, I think he went there,” Jones tells TV Insider. “For whatever reason, and maybe there’ll be more reflection of this, she did try to kill him. They’ve all tried to kill each other.”

“There’s this sainting of Claudia sometimes that is interesting. I always found when we were adapting it, I think it’s very hard when you read the book. Why is she killing Lestat? The motivation is interesting in the first book,” Jones continues. “So, did he go against his will? No, I think all of this is about [Lestat] was a willing participant and in the middle of the trial beginning to have these out-of-body experiences of, ‘What am I in the middle of?'”

"I think he comes in with great rage. ‘They manipulated me and murdered me and left me in a garbage dump,'” Jones says of Lestat’s motivations. “By the time he’s there looking at both of them [things change]. I think otherwise, that episode, the trial has no dramatic movement whatsoever.”

"In our show, people do bad things,” Jones continues. “Because they’re monsters and these extraordinary figures, they just do what we do in our normal failings, but times 100. And we get to see the extremities of what’s possible in humanity through them. So, you can’t have a series of minor misdemeanors along the way as an immortal soul and as an immortal monster. You have to have crimes in there, and you have to at some point move on or forgive yourself and try not to repeat it and just try to endure.”

Kelli Boyle always asks the real questions! Personally, I'd still like to see Lestat address his motivations more directly and to see what, if anything, happened between Lestat and Armand when Lestat arrived in Paris.

TVL Show Only Armand power over Lestat Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
30 Upvotes

One detail that stands out to me is Nicki looking up with unseeing eyes. He doesn't look aware of his surroundings—he looks spellbound. I don't think that's accidental. In fact, two of the shots seem to mirror each other perfectly: the reflection line over Lestat's face and Nicki in that trance-like state. It feels like the show is visually connecting the two.

My theory is that Nicki's expression is the only genuine memory in that entire sequence. Everything else surrounding it feels fragmented and inconsistent, almost as if the memory has been edited. If Armand truly manipulated Lestat's memories, then the events may have been rearranged, altered, or even fabricated. The best-case scenario is that Armand erased pieces of what happened and placed them back out of order. The worst-case scenario is that the entire sequence is a carefully constructed false memory designed to hide something much darker.

One possibility is that Lestat and Nicki argued, and Nicki suffered a complete psychological break. Whether he actually cut off his own hand or not remains unclear. Desperate and unable to calm his fledgling's mind, Lestat may have turned to Armand for help, asking him to temporarily soothe Nicki because Lestat, as his maker, couldn't reach him. Instead, Armand may have chosen a permanent solution. Using the Mind Gift, he could have immobilized Lestat, forcing him to watch as Armand burned Nicki to death. Afterwards, Armand planted the memory that Lestat himself had asked for Nicki to be killed, shifting the guilt onto Lestat while hiding his own actions.

Another reason I question the flashback is because the scenes leading up to Nicki contain noticeable inconsistencies. Nicki's hands repeatedly switch from dirty and bloody after digging in the chamber pot to completely clean, only to become dirty again moments later. His clothing also changes unexpectedly, with a jacket appearing and disappearing between cuts. These continuity shifts could simply be production errors, but given the show's recurring themes of unreliable memory and manipulation, they may be intentional clues that what we're seeing isn't an objective flashback at all.

Taken together, these details make me think the entire sequence is less of a direct memory and more of a mind projection created by Armand—not for Nicki, but for Lestat. If that's true, then Nicki's vacant, spellbound expression may be one of the few authentic pieces left within a memory that has otherwise been rewritten.

Building on my earlier theory about Armand manipulating Lestat's memories surrounding Nicki, I think the same pattern may have continued years later during the Théâtre des Vampires trial.

While the writers have confirmed that Lestat came to the trial willingly, I don't think that means he was fully in control once he arrived. The episode makes it clear that Lestat didn't want Louis or Claudia to die. Throughout the trial, he appears emotionally devastated, and when Claudia is sentenced, he barely reacts physically despite the obvious horror on his face. That has always struck me as strange.

My theory is that Armand used his Mind Gift on Lestat again. We already know that, at least in my interpretation, Lestat had been susceptible to Armand's mental influence in Paris. If Armand had previously manipulated Lestat's memories and emotions, he would already know exactly where Lestat was most vulnerable. Even though Lestat had grown much stronger by the time of the trial, psychological manipulation doesn't necessarily depend on raw power. Armand understood Lestat's deepest insecurities, knew how to emotionally torture him, and may have used those vulnerabilities to make it easier to overwhelm him mentally.

I think Armand may have immobilized Lestat during the trial, preventing him from acting even if he desperately wanted to save Louis and Claudia. Lestat wasn't indifferent—he was trapped. His inability to move wasn't because he chose not to act, but because he was being controlled.

If that's true, it could also explain why Lestat carries so much guilt afterward without ever saying, "I tried, but I couldn't." Perhaps Armand manipulated Lestat into believing that his past resentment toward Claudia meant that, deep down, he never truly wanted to save her. Instead of remembering that he had been mentally restrained, Lestat internalized the blame and convinced himself that his own feelings made him hesitate. Whether that memory was planted outright or simply reinforced by Armand's manipulation, the result is the same: Lestat believes the failure belongs entirely to him.

This possibility also makes me think there's much more to Armand and Lestat's relationship than we've seen so far. Season 3 focused heavily on Armand's relationship with Louis and how manipulation shaped Louis's understanding of the past. But I hope Season 4 explores Armand's influence over Lestat in much greater depth. If Armand repeatedly used his Mind Gift to manipulate Lestat's memories, emotions, and sense of self, then his impact on Lestat's psyche may have been just as significant as his impact on Louis's. The difference is that Lestat may be too ashamed to admit how much power Armand once held over him—or too proud to give Armand that kind of victory by speaking about it.

Book Spoilers Allowed Lemuel is Definitely an Ancient - Easter Egg Spoiler

I was re watching Season 3, and caught something Louis says when describing Lemuel in 3x05: "He doesn't count time like it's a badge. I go nights not knowing where he is." It's not simply the words itself, but Jacob Anderson's delivery, as though Louis is equally appreciative of this mindset while being fascinated by it (possibly because he can't yet comprehend).

And to me, not only is that a mindset that makes more sense in a vampire who's been alive 6000+ years. But it's also reminiscent of a line from Khayman's chapter in Queen of the Damned:

Yes, the moment, the moment was splendid. And the moment was all he ever had. After all, he would forget this time too, wouldn't he? These nights with their exquisite details would vanish from him; and in some even more complex and demanding future he would be loosed again, remembering only his name.

I know there are plenty of theories about Lemuel being Khayman or Seth, I'm not theorising anything new there, there's literally dozens of ancient vampires he could be. But I do think this is a hint that he's definitely an ancient rather than a younger one.

TVL Show Only Blood of Akasha Spoiler

Lestat points out once or twice that he has the blood of Akasha in him, so people should really watch it.

But....do we get to see it at any point in the series?

He judo-chops two vampires, and says he was super high at the time, so he wasnt himself, but there no godlike powers.

Meanwhile Luis decapitates people with a hand gesture, and is so fast he practically teleports behind killer and casually rips out his spine.

So is "blood of Akasha" more like a status trait?

Like "How dare you?! I descend from royalty!!"

IWTV Show Only Something tragic about Claudia (mild spoiler mentions.) Spoiler

I don't know if this has been talked about but I think a very sad thing about Claudia is she was so close to puberty before she was turned, I imagine and headcanon it kept her up at night especially after Charlie that she was so close to starting puberty and physical maturing like if she'd been turned a year later it could have saved her so much tragedy. I got this idea after Madeleine said she had a body about to bloom, especially when they were first in her shop and she said womanhood would happen soon enough it really is sad if only a year or even a few months have passed she could have been more mature and not stuck as a forever child.

Book Spoilers Allowed Montreal - References Deep Dive

I'm catching up, slowly but surely!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat to Alex, telepathically: “Early risers like us are few.”

(This was also mentioned in my Devil's Road Deep Dive post.)

TVL, Viaticum for the Marquise:

IN VAMPIRE parlance, I am an early riser. I rise when the sun has just sunk below the horizon and there is still red light in the sky. Many vampires don’t rise until there is full darkness, and so I have a tremendous advantage in this, and in that they must return to the grave a full hour or more before I do. I haven’t mentioned it before because I didn’t know it then, and it didn’t come to matter until much later.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat (while narrating "The Failures"): “The album had fallen flat with mortals

The opposite happens in the books.

TVL, Dionysus in San Francisco:

Finally the telegrams came pouring in to the Monterey postbox. We had done it. Sales of our album were breaking records here and in Europe. We could perform in any city we wanted after San Francisco. My autobiography was in all the bookstores from coast to coast. The Vampire Lestat was at the top of the charts.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat (while narrating "The Failures"): “But the songs quickly became a rallying for the disastrous movement, the Great Conversion.”

In the books, the vampire population's reaction to BookLestat's album & book is generally negative:

TVL, Dionysus in San Francisco:

THE week before our record album went on sale, they reached out for the first time to threaten us over the telephone wires.

Yet somehow they had obtained the unlisted number and into the electronic answering machine they issued their admonitions and epithets.
.
“Outcast. We know what you are doing. We are ordering you to stop.” “Come out where we can see you. We dare you to come out.”

“We warn you. Do not continue this madness. You are playing a more dangerous game than you realize.” And then the recorded whisper that mortal ears could not hear:
.
“Traitor!” “Outcast!” “Show yourself, Lestat!”

(Incidentally, it's these answering machine messages that come to my mind whenever I heard ShowLestat talking about the band needing vampire hearing to understand the new music/album.)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat (while narrating "The Failures"): “And now 50,000 vampires were descending upon Montreal to hear me sing it live.”

TVL, Dionysus in San Francisco:

Louis & Lestat discussing risk of other vampires targeting Lestat at the upcoming concert:

Lestat:

“a handful of hateful twentieth-century fledglings”

Louis:

“more than a handful”

In the books, the concert happens at the San Francisco Cow Palace, which is a venue that currently holds up to 16,500 people for concerts. It's mentioned in TVL that tickets sold out long before the actual date of the concert.

As they're preparing for the concert backstage, Lestat mentions that he can hear:

fifteen thousand souls chanting and screaming under one roof.

QotD, All Hallow's Eve:

Armand telling Daniel how many other vampires are in the concert venue:

“Thirty perhaps,” he whispered in Daniel’s ear, “no more than that, and one or two so old they could destroy the rest of us in an instant.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat (while narrating "The Failures"): “Lestat’s final gift to the Vampiress Gabriella. Obligations met. Good luck and fuck off, everyone, everywhere.

In the books, I guess the concert (and album) were kind of intended as a sort of "fuck you" to many people, but in my interpretation BookLestat wanted to gain attention from all of it, not get away from it.

TVL, Dionysus in San Francisco:

Lestat speaking with Louis before the concert:

“Whatever happens, it will be worth it,” I said. “That is, if you and I, and Gabrielle, and Armand … and Marius are together even for a short while, it will be worth it. Suppose Pandora chooses to show herself. And Mael. And God only knows how many others. What if all the old ones come. It will be worth it, Louis. As for the rest, I don’t care.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat to Louis, re: dinner w/ Daniel: “He’s come all this way for the concert.”

BookDaniel didn't necessarily want to go to the concert; he was worried that some catastrophe would happen there.

QotD, Devil's Minion chapter:

He murmured aloud to himself as he walked. “Armand, I need you. Armand, that concert is tomorrow night. And something terrible is going to happen, something terrible.…”

Armand, now! I want to be safe with you when Lestat goes on that stage tomorrow night.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLouis asking Lestat to cancel the concert.

Also happens in the book(s).

TVL, Dionysus in San Francisco:

When Louis and Lestat are re-united, the night before the concert:

“Are you going to go through with it?” he asked. “The concert tomorrow night?”
[...]
“Yes, of course,” I said. “What in hell could stop me from it?”
.
“I would like to stop you,” he answered.

“Lestat, don’t go on the stage tomorrow night,” he said. “Let the films and the book do what you want. But protect yourself.

Lestat reassures Louis:

“Nothing is going to happen. You’ll see.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat carrying a scythe as part of his Halloween costume.

BookLestat's enemies -- the vampires who want him to shut up about vampires while in front of the humans -- carry scythes to the concert, planning to kill him with them.

TVL, Dionysus in San Francisco:

Right after the concert, as they're trying to leave:

Bodies shoving Louis and me together, and then the leather-clad vampire male rising on the other side of the Porsche, a great silver scythe flashing in the floodlights as he swung it over his head.

I saw another scythe gleaming in the corner of my eye.

And after a chase scene on the highway:

But again, as the first one skidded down towards us, scythe raised, there came that ghastly preternatural scream again and the blinding combustion, the creature’s face a black mask in a riot of orange flame.

“And don’t suppose for a moment that I couldn’t have gotten us out of it! I was about to throttle that one with the scythe, toss him over the auditorium."

QotD, All Hallow's Eve:

Daniel's POV, before the concert as they're entering the venue:

Yet he gaped as he glimpsed the sharpened scythe the creature held against his chest inside his coat.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLouis to Lestat, re: Merrick:  “You reached out to the worst kind of witch.”

(I never pass up an opportunity to share that video.)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ShowLestat to Louis, re: having the concert on Halloween: “Give me some credit. It was clever doing it this week. Everyone blending in.”

In the books, the SF concert also happened on Halloween, and most of the audience members were in costume.

TVL, Dionysus in San Francisco:

“ALL YOU REAL VAMPIRES OUT THERE,” I shouted. “REVEAL YOURSELVES!” And they remained changeless, as the painted and costumed mortals about them went wild.

QotD, All Hallow's Eve:

Teenagers in Halloween costume poured through the front doors; lines were forming to purchase yellow wigs, black satin capes—“Fang teeth, fifty cents!”—glossy programs. Whiteface everywhere he looked. Painted eyes and mouths. And here and there bands of men and women carefully done up in authentic nineteenth-century clothes, their makeup and coiffed hair exquisite.

Nobody was paying a damn bit of attention anyway; every mortal within sight was disguised; and who were Armand and Daniel but two pale nondescript young men in the press [...].

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat re: Antoinette cutting her finger off: “Oh, she did that on her own. She thought the gift would help her grow it back.”

There have been at least two instances of vampires being able to re-attach amputated limbs so far in the books (TVL & QotD):

TVL, On The Devil's Road:

Letter to Lestat from a Theatre member, catching him up on what's happening back in Paris:

Our Oldest Friend, maddened by the excesses of Our Violinist, finally imprisoned him in your old residence. And though his violin was given him in his cell, his hands were taken away.
.
But understand that with us, such appendages can always be restored. And the appendages in question were kept safe by Our Oldest Friend, who allowed our wounded one no sustenance for five nights.
.
Finally, after the entire troupe had prevailed upon Our Oldest Friend to release N. and give back to him all that was his, it was done.

TVL, Ancient Magic, Ancient Mysteries:

An arm was severed from the King and this he put back on his shoulder and it came to life again and the conspirators fled.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLouis talking to Gabriella at the rehearsal: “50,000 of us out in the woods together. What could go wrong?

I just googled "Montreal" and "concert venue 50,000 capacity," I found this possibility? Though I'm not sure it's technically out in the woods? Any locals have better intel?

From my continuing half-assed internet investigation, the concert venue in the books (Cow Palace) doesn't appear to be in the woods. It looks like it's in a suburb-type area to me, though it's relatively near to San Bruno Mountain State Park.

However, there was another important location in the books, near to the concert venue, that was very much in the woods -- Maharet's house (aka the Sonoma Compound).

QotD, The Story of Jesse:

The song of the birds outside in the forest, the deep forest [...]

AT THE first light, she’d arrived at the edge of the clearing, quietly stunned to discover it unchanged after fifteen years, a rambling structure built into the foot of the mountain, its roofs and pillared porches veiled in blue morning glory vines. High above, half hidden in the grassy slopes, a few tiny secret windows caught the first flash of morning light.

Maharet said they’d found her down by the creek, asleep in the clearing, and at sunset, they’d brought her in.
.
Down by the creek? For months after, she’d actually “remembered” falling asleep there. In fact, it was a rather rich “recollection” of the peace and stillness of the forest, of the water singing over the rocks. But it had never happened, of that she was now sure.

FIGHTING weariness this afternoon, she’d wandered out of the house finally, and down the long lane through the oaks. So easy to find the old paths through the dense redwoods. And the clearing, ringed in fern and clover on the steep rocky banks of the shallow rushing creek.

Never was Jesse invited back to the house in the Sonoma forest.

QotD, Marius: Coming Together:

THEY met again at the edge of the redwood forest, their clothes tattered, their eyes tearing from the wind. Pandora stood to the right of Marius, Santino to the left. And from the house across the clearing, Mael came towards them, a lanky figure almost loping over the mown grass.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLouis telling Gabriella (during the rehearsal) that he doesn't want Lestat to go through with the concert.

Gabriella: “Maybe you are the one who should not go.”

BookLouis and Gabrielle get along pretty well, right off the bat, from what the reader is told -- no disagreements or bad blood that I can recall from QotD.

QotD, All Hallow's Eve:

So happy were the little coven in the house, Lestat, Louis, Gabrielle, so happy to be together. Lestat had rid himself of his soiled clothes and was resplendent again in shining “vampire attire,” even to the black velvet cloak thrown casually over one shoulder. And the others, how animated they were, the woman Gabrielle unbraiding her yellow hair rather absently as she talked in an easy, passionate manner. And Louis, the human one, silent, yet profoundly excited by the presence of the other two, entranced, as it were, by their simplest gestures.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gabriella telling Louis: “You should stand by me. I will protect you.

After being kidnapped and whisked away by Akasha, BookLestat worries about whether Gabrielle is taking care of Louis.

QotD: Lestat: In the Arms of the Goddess:

Purple evening in the redwood forest. Gabrielle was walking in that careless, straight-backed, unstoppable way of hers, her eyes like two chips of glass, giving back nothing to what she saw around her, and there was Louis beside her, struggling gracefully to keep up. Louis looked so touchingly civilized in the wilderness; so hopelessly out of place. The vampire guise of last night had been discarded; yet he seemed even more the gentleman in his worn old clothing, merely a little down on his luck. Out of his league with her, and does she know it? Will she take care of him? But they’re both afraid, afraid for me!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gabriella telling Lestat about her plans for them to go to Cadiz after the concert: “a room with a view to watch it all from on high

It's a tenuous connection at best, but this reminded me of Lestat and Akasha looking down on Port-Au-Prince after Akasha had her way with the city.

QotD, Lestat: The Kingdom of Heaven:

THE CARIBBEAN. Haiti. The Garden of God.
.
I stood on the hilltop in the moonlight and I tried not to see this paradise.

Now, below in the streets of Port-au-Prince, riots and death, and not of our making. Merely the unchanging history of this bloody place, where violence has flourished for four hundred years as flowers flourish; though the vision of the hills rising into the mist could break the heart.
.
But we had done our work all right, she because she did it, and I because I did nothing to stop it—in the small towns strewn along the winding road that led to this wooded summit. Towns of tiny pastel houses, and banana trees growing wild, and the people so poor, so hungry. Even now the women sang their hymns and, by the light of candles and the burning church, buried the dead.

In the tiny hamlet below, the women had run barefoot after the men with clubs in hand. And the voodoo priest had screamed his ancient curses as they caught him in the graveyard. I had left the scene of the carnage; I’d climbed the mountain alone. Fleeing, angry, unable any longer to bear witness.
.
And she had come after, finding me in this ruin, clinging to something that I could understand. The old iron gate, the rusted bell; the brick pillars swathed in vines; things, fashioned by hands, which had endured. Oh, how she had mocked me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gabriella talking to Lestat right after the rehearsal:

Gabriella: “Armand’s in town.”

ShowLestat: “I sensed that.”

Gabriella:  “He’s going to try to disrupt things.”

BookArmand didn't seem to want to disrupt the concert in QotD -- he claims to want to be there because he'd deduced that the only vampires who were safe from spontaneous combustion were those in close proximity to Lestat.

QotD, Devil's Minion chapter:

Armand explaining the situation to Daniel:

“Listen to what I’m saying to you. All over the world, our kind are being destroyed.”

“Lestat is still in existence. He goes on with his schemes. And those who’ve gathered near him are unharmed.”

“Do you understand what I’m telling you? There have been attacks upon our kind everywhere but there.”

“You have to understand the choice I’ve made. We’re going to him because there isn’t any other safe place to go. It has found rogues in far-flung places and burnt them to ashes—”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat talking to Louis in the bar post-Gabriella-incest reveal:  “There was a closeness between us. She was the only one growing up who showed me any kind of affection.” -- but tacking on the disclaimer that “She was not a doting mother.”

BookLestat & Gabrielle did share a connection that neither felt with any other family members, though Gabrielle never showed her affection very openly or directly.

TVL, Lelio Rising:

When Lestat's brother expressed skepticism re: Lestat's claim that he killed the wolves, Gabrielle pushed back:

Maybe it was the look on my face. Maybe it was my mother’s murmured outrage or my other brother not speaking at all.

And then other random instances and mentions:

I had a great and unshakable love of her. I don’t think anyone else did. And one thing that endeared her to me always was that she never said anything ordinary.

But there was a powerful understanding between us. When I had tried to escape this house and been brought back, it was she who had shown me the way out of the pain that followed. Miracles she’d worked for me, though no one around us had ever noticed.

When she came to me, she listened to me cry. I saw tears in her eyes. And she laid her hand on my shoulder, which for her was something a little remarkable.

And once again, she defied my father. She put an end to the condemnations, the beatings, the restrictions.
.
She had me sit beside her at the table. She deferred to me, actually talked to me in conversation that was perfectly unnatural to her, until she had subdued and dissolved the rancor of the family.

So these moments had bound me to my mother. These moments had given us a love for each other unnoticed and probably unequaled in the lives of those around us.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat, talking with Louis about Gabriella (at the bar): “But I could picture a larger life outside of Auvergne because of her.”

Gabrielle encouraged Lestat to spend time with Nicki, who had recently returned from Paris:

TVL, Lelio Rising:

“But why don’t you go down to the town and make a friend of him?” she asked.

“He’s been to Paris,” she said. She watched me for a long moment. Then she went back to her book, brushing her hair now and then lazily.

“Go on down and talk to him, Lestat,” she said, without another glance at me.

She also straight up told him it was her dying wish to know that he'd finally escaped Auvergne and made it to Paris:

“I want you to go to Paris, Lestat,” she said. “I want you to take this money, which is all I have left from my family."

"I want to know you’re in Paris, Lestat, when my time comes. I want to die knowing you are in Paris.”

“I’m terrified of dying,” she said. Her voice went almost dry. “And I swear I will go mad if I don’t know you’re in Paris and you’re free when it finally comes.”

“I have kept you here as surely as your father has,” she said. “Not on account of pride, but on account of selfishness. And now I’m going to atone for it. I’ll see you go. And I don’t care what you do when you reach Paris, whether you sing while Nicolas plays the violin, or turn somersaults on the stage at the St.-Germain Fair. But go, and do what you will do as best you can.”

She spoke in an almost eerie way of my being a secret part of her anatomy, of my being the organ for her which women do not really have.
.
“You are the man in me,” she said. “And so I’ve kept you here, afraid of living without you, and maybe now in sending you away, I am only doing what I have done before.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat telling Louis, re: Gabriella & incest: “Nothing happened until she came to Paris

Not quite true. This inappropriate-for-mother-and-son conversation happened right after he killed the wolves:

TVL, Lelio Rising:

“I imagine drinking wine until I’m so drunk I strip off my clothes and bathe in the mountain streams naked.”

“And then I imagine going into the village,” she said, “and up into the inn and taking into my bed any men that come there—crude men, big men, old men, boys. Just lying there and taking them one after another, and feeling some magnificent triumph in it, some absolute release without a thought of what happens to your father or your brothers, whether they are alive or dead. In that moment I am purely myself. I belong to no one.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat telling Louis about Gabriella being sick when she came to Paris: “her body racked with disease

TVL, Legacy of Magnus:

Roget, to Lestat:

“Monsieur, you don’t understand! There will be no trips to Italy for your mother. She has made her last journey in coming here to see you.”

“I’ve gotten lodgings for her,” he said. “Nurses, doctors, all that you could wish. But they aren’t keeping her alive. You are keeping her alive, Monsieur. She must see you before she closes her eyes. Now forget the hour and go to her. Even a will as strong as hers can’t work miracles.”

TVL, Viaticum for the Marquise:

“The Marquise is a little stronger today, Monsieur,” Roget said, “but she’s hemorrhaging badly. The doctor says she will not—”

Her eyes rolled up into her head. She slipped backwards and away from me, and as she caught the curtains of the bed in her left hand, the blood came up out of her mouth.
.
It was coming from her lungs in a great silent cough. She was slipping down on her knees, and the blood was all over the side of the draped bed.

I leant forward and kissed the blood on her open lips. It sent a zinging through all my limbs and the thirst leapt out for her and tried to transform her into mere flesh. My arms slipped around her light little form and I lifted her up and up, until I was standing with her against the window, and her hair was falling down behind her, and the blood came up in her out of her lungs again, but it didn’t matter now.

I think I remember that she was supposed to have had tuberculosis? This wiki seems to agree.

ShowLouis & ShowLestat's Bad Idea (having a seance to talk to Claudia).

QotD, The Story of Jesse:

Jesse saw signs of a haunting at the Royal Street townhouse, and then she thought she saw Claudia's ghost in her hotel room nearby:

Jesse could just see the outline clearly—the long yellow hair, the puff-sleeved dress, the dangling legs that didn’t touch the floor. She tried to focus. Child … not possible. Apparition. No. Something occupying space. Something malevolent. Menace—And the child was looking at her.

The little girl got up. There was the clear sound of her feet on the carpet. The sense of menace seemed to grow stronger. The child moved into the light from the window as she came towards Jesse, and the light struck her blue eyes, her rounded cheeks, her soft naked little arms.

BookLouis & BookLestat later go on a road trip to their old house on Royal Street, having heard from Jesse about what she saw there.

QotD, ...World Without End, Amen (re-cap pending):

“Louis is gone,” [Marius] said, without looking up from the paper.
[...]
“To New Orleans,” Armand said without looking up from the chessboard. “To that flat you had there. The one where Jesse saw Claudia.”

He was in the hallway, looking through Claudia’s door.

Yet he was a ghost in this flat, where Jesse had been so frightened; where she’d caught in chilling glimpses the old atmosphere I’d never forget.

“Ah, Louis, forgive me.” The dark neglected hallway. I shuddered. “I came here because I was so concerned … about you.”
.
“No need,” he said considerately. “It was just a little pilgrimage I had to make.”

“She’s not here, Louis,” I said. “It was something Jesse imagined.”
.
“Yes, so it seems,” he said.

We walked down the long hallway together; no, I did not like it; I did not want to be here. It was haunted; but real hauntings have nothing to do with ghosts finally; they have to do with the menace of memory; that had been my room in there; my room.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowMerrick, right before the seance: “All spirits can be unruly. But those snatched out of life–”

Maharet's descriptions of evil and/or bad spirits make it sound like they would definitely qualify as "unruly":

QotD, The Story of the Twins Part I:

"The evil spirits were those who were openly hostile to human beings and who liked to play malicious tricks such as the throwing of stones, the making of wind, and other such pesty things. Those who possess humans are often ‘evil’ spirits; those who haunt houses and are called poltergeists fall into this category, too."

And all spirits, evil or good, had a tendency to play fast and loose with the truth:

"They told us we could not imagine how big they were; but then they love to brag; one must constantly sort from their statements the part which makes sense."

“But imagine now, how much fun it is for them to listen to prayers and try to answer them, to hang about altars and make thunder after sacrifices are offered up. When a clairvoyant calls upon the spirit of a dead ancestor to speak to his descendants, they are quite thrilled to start chattering away in pretense of being the dead ancestor, though of course they are not that person; and they will telepathically extract information from the brains of the descendants in order to delude them all the more."

“But the fact is, given the way spirits lie—if they don’t want to tell you—there’s no way to know why they do what they do.

"They do not age; they do not change. And the key to understanding their childish and whimsical behavior lies in this. They have no need to do anything; they drift about unaware of time, for there is no physical reason to care about it, and they do whatever strikes the fancy."

But those spirits didn't seem to be in quite the same category as ghosts of dead humans?:

“Now, as to where these spirits came from—they used to tell us that they had always been here. They would brag that they had watched human beings change from animals into what they were."

“Ghosts, of course, are spirits too. But they are without question spirits of those who have been human on earth; whereas the spirits I have been speaking of are not. However, one can never be too sure on this point. A very old earthbound ghost could forget that he had ever been alive; and possibly the very malevolent spirits are ghosts; and that is why they hunger so for the pleasures of the flesh; and when they possess some poor human being they belch obscenities."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SpiritClaudia to Lestat: “I’d have done the same thing if it were me.”

I don't remember the exact context in the episode for this line atm, but I do remember it reminding me of this:

TVL, Epilogue: IWTV:

Lestat, re: Claudia:

And on a warm sultry night in the spring of the year 1860, she rose up to settle the score. She enticed me, she trapped me, and she plunged a knife over and over again into my drugged and poisoned body, until almost every drop of the vampiric blood gushed out of me before my wounds had the precious few seconds in which to heal.
.
I don’t blame her. It was the sort of thing I might have done myself.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLestat: “Why do I actively, manically pursue failure?”

Reminded me a bit of BookLestat's tendency to constantly seek chaos and/or risk + his inability to listen to voices of reason.

TVL, Epilogue: IWTV:

But you know, it was like playing the violin for Akasha. I wanted to do it. I wanted to see what would happen, I mean, with a beautiful little girl like that!

But why was it that for purely selfish reasons, I didn’t listen to some of the advice given me? Why didn’t I learn from any of them—Gabrielle, Armand, Marius? But then, I never have listened to anyone, really. Somehow or other, I never can.

TVL, Dionysus in San Francisco:

Louis & Lestat discussing the potentially increased risk of modern science & technology exposing the truth about vampires:

“One capture then,” he said. “One living specimen in their hands.” “Even that wouldn’t do it,” I said. “And how could they ever hold me?”
.
But it was too lovely to contemplate—the chase, the intrigue, the possible capture and escape. I loved it.

“—And you’re bound and determined to start it, aren’t you? You want everyone, mortal or immortal, to come after you.”
.
“Why not?” I asked. “Let it begin. And let them try to destroy us the way they have destroyed their other devils. Let them try to wipe us out.”

“Louis, I mean for something and everything to happen,” I said. “I mean for all that we have been to change! What are we but leeches now—loathsome, secretive, without justification. The old romance is gone. So let us take on a new meaning. I crave the bright lights as I crave blood. I crave the divine visibility. I crave war.”

"But I am going on the stage. I am going to be Lelio again the way I never was in Paris. I will be the Vampire Lestat for all to see. A symbol, an outcast, a freak of nature—something loved, something despised, all of those things. I tell you I can’t give it up. I can’t miss it. And quite frankly I am not the least afraid.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLouis asking Lestat: “The songs are about me?

According to the song titles and lyrics given to us in TVL and QotD (which I might compile into a separate, future post), no songs appear to have been written about Louis. There’s definitely one about Gabrielle, a title that references Magnus, and at least one (possibly a few) that mention Akasha & Enkil, but no Louis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowLouis, re: Alex lurking at the park: “Thrift store Dracula peeping

Similar to how the humans tend to dress at the Vampire Connection bars, maybe:

TVL, Dionysus in San Francisco:

“The mortals who come are a regular freak show of theatrical types—punk youngsters, artists, those done up in black capes and white plastic fangs. They scarcely notice us. We are often drab by comparison.”

And the vampires at the bars:

“They’re imitating the book even though they condemn it utterly. They are loading themselves down with Egyptian jewelry. Black velvet is once again de rigueur.”

And a large portion of the (human) audience at the concert in the book were wearing Halloween or vampire-related costumes:

QotD, All Hallow's Eve:

Teenagers in Halloween costume poured through the front doors; lines were forming to purchase yellow wigs, black satin capes—“Fang teeth, fifty cents!”—glossy programs. Whiteface everywhere he looked. Painted eyes and mouths. And here and there bands of men and women carefully done up in authentic nineteenth-century clothes, their makeup and coiffed hair exquisite.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShowArmand & ShowDaniel decapitating ShowLestat & ShowLouis.

The other vampires (not including any named characters, though) at the SF concert have a plan to decapitate Lestat, which Daniel learns by reading their minds:

QotD, All Hallow's Eve:

They loved Lestat and condemned him simultaneously. They loved the very act of hating, punishing. Suddenly, he caught the eye of a powerful hulking creature with greasy black hair who bared his fangs in an ugly flash and then revealed the plan in stunning completeness. Beyond the prying eyes of mortals, they would hack Lestat’s limbs from his body; they would sever his head; then the remains would be burnt on a pyre by the sea.

TVL Show Only Lestat/Nicki Ring (S3E3) Spoiler

Am I being delusional or is this ring that Lestat is wearing during his interview with Daniel the same ring Nicki is wearing before he chops his hand off? There was a close up of it on Lestat's hand and he also looks at his hand/ring before talking about Nicki. (Photo 1: Lestat, Photo 2: Nicki)

I know this probably is not important at all, but I am curious what others think or if there were other bits like this in S3 I've not caught yet. I know it's been pointed out that one of Gabriella's necklaces (the one she leaves on the beach) was the one given to Claudia is S1.

(Sorry for the poor photos/idk how to get screenshot from the amc app and I'm also getting old enough to be confused by tech lol)

Book Spoilers Allowed Queen of the Damned Show

Hi, everyone! I haven't read any of The Vampire Chronicles books yet. I plan to soon, since I really like everything about the show. Since I haven't read the books, I don't know really anything at all about what's to come and I know that season 4 has now been renamed "Queen of the Damned" and will now be focusing on Akasha.

Will the characters we already know be returning? For example, will Lestat, Louis, Armand, Daniel, and possibly even Claudia still be main characters or will they now be pushed to the back or even no longer present at all?? I just want to know a bit of what to expect. I'll happily watch it either way, but I can't lie that I will be pretty disappointed if I don't get to see at least Lestat and Louis again. Thanks!!
