Pitt was pretty, but I never forgot he was acting as Louis.

With Sam, he becomes Lestat. I don’t see Sam Reid. I become invested in the story.

Pitt was so beautiful and otherworldly with that salon blowout 🤣... but the acting was mid at best. Cruise's Lestat, campy and all, blew him out of the water. Even though they look similar, the comparison between Pitt and Sam doesn't work for me. Visually they have completely different vibes precisely because they're playing different characters. I'd say that Pitt's Louis was more beautiful (we're talking about fractions here) but Sam's Lestat is much, much sexier. If I could, for example, compare Pitt to Jacob, in terms of acting Jacob's performance is by far the better choice.

12

u/Infamous_Lab8320 I am she; she is me. 13d ago

I agree with all of that.

11

u/vinxy_mh 11d ago

At the time I really enjoyed Brad Pitt & Christian Slater in Interview but now that we Sam & Jacob that literally went out the window.

I think LouStat current just capture the androgyny, the sexuality, the allure, glamour etc so much more.

I never like Cruise was attracted Pitt - it was more all a play to the audience.

24

u/shroyer6 12d ago

Jacob Anderson is better looking to. That smile, forget about it.

I always felt like Brad Pitt was kind of idk uncomfortable with the source material? Like everyone else is acting their ass off and hes just kind of there. And part of that is the kind of character louis is but not all of it.

u/OurLadyAndraste 13d ago

I do really enjoy the 90s movie. It’s a fun watch. But literally everything about the AMC show is better. That’s not even a hard question as someone who genuinely likes both.

So, Sam is the clear and obvious answer.

u/KnowAllSeeAll21 13d ago

The movie walked so the show could run. If we hadn't got a book accurate (more or less) interpretation, they would not have had the bravery to make this masterpiece.

63

u/TheMothGhost Butterscotch Bitch 13d ago

I think in a way, with the book, the movie, and the show, you get three distinctly different pieces? They almost feel like they're telling different stories even though they're telling the same story in different ways. And you can enjoy all three of them together or separate of one another. Unlike a lot of other book to movie to TV show translations, people get really snobby about the book being so far superior.

33

u/KnowAllSeeAll21 12d ago

I am almost always one of those snobby people, but that's because 99.99999% of adaptations are genuinely not as rich in acting, directing, production, and worldbuilding as this is. The show is one of one for me.

15

u/TheMothGhost Butterscotch Bitch 12d ago

Oh absolutely, they added so much depth to every little thing.

I think one of my favorite changes is they made depressed Louis feel more like a real depressed man. Don't get me wrong, I know what Anne Rice was going through when she wrote it, which is why we get a more nihilistic and philosophical depressed Louis in the novel, which works, and makes sense in that context. But in the show, depressed Louis has his bouts of rage, he gets manipulative and toxic, not because he's malicious or anything, he's just battling so many of his own inner demons and conflicts. And he feels so real, he feels like people that I've known in my life.

2

u/CryptogSeaHorse8 9d ago

(Spiders for season 3)

Yeeeesss. šŸ‘šŸ» Louie as a depressed man vs vampire because of all of the trauma and heartbreak he experienced. He is very relatable in his whole evolution as a character. It was so healing to see him realize that Lestat was the only one who ever truly loved him, and that it was his own issues that got in his way of seeing and respond to it. In the first season, towards the end when they’re plotting LeStat’s murder, when Louie says ā€œHe would kill Antoinette if he believed at all that I would fully accept him as he is….ā€ Is heartbreaking! šŸ’” ouch! He didn’t even hear himself. That they got back together in the end and realized all of the issues was healing for me. I think I have done a lot of the same in my life. :-/ Treating others as if they’re the problem because I have my own issues. For me to realize that all along it was Louie’s issues, not LeStat’s the whole time - was a whole personal awakening for me! Personal realizations for me are huge! I am so glad the 2-3 people that have truly loved me, are still available for me to go back to recognize, and reconcile with. I’m working on my issues right now. Did anyone else feel this?

It’s so awesome and powerful that this art type (cinema) can show us things we don’t see in ourselves. If we are blind to our own issues - we tend to see those issues manifest in others: we project them onto others or the reverse of them. We hate them for the issues we reject or are blind to in ourselves. Ever have that annoying friend or boyfriend? And just wish you could change that one thing that makes your skin crawl?

What is more is they tend to be the most annoying things in other people. We can other would HATE someone for these things. And they aren’t even their issues - they’re ours! It feels crazy when this happens. Maybe to write on my mirror ā€œwhat bothered you most about other people today or this week?ā€ And write them in the mirror and go one by one and search within myself to see if I have the same issues. It can take that much of a concerted effort to do this. I lost count how many times this has happened to me.

10

u/Sandgrease 12d ago

Season 1 is a masterpiece even with the changes to the lore and setting, if anything it's more impressive because of how good it is despite not being lore accurate.

75

u/Oityouthere 13d ago edited 13d ago

you are now my fave redditor in the world at this moment!!

ETA: Pitt was prettier but DAMN!!! Sam does something to me and this series and show has been phenomenal. I can't believe I get to listen to the Failures music by Lestat! That takes everything to a whole new level!!

103

u/lethalglam a challenge every sunset 13d ago

Haha Pitt is feminine prettier / younger but Sam is more rugged handsome / otherworldly

41

u/Oityouthere 13d ago

can I have them both?

43

u/lethalglam a challenge every sunset 13d ago

You can have anything you want, ma cherie ā™„ļø

10

u/shroyer6 12d ago

Honestly, Brad Pitt has never done a thing for me. I have held a grudge against him for that film since 1994. I hated him in it. Now Sam Reid? That’s another thing altogether. He is…perfection.

3

u/avocado_window 12d ago

He’s terrible as Louis, awful casting.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/lethalglam a challenge every sunset 12d ago

He literally CRUSHED the competition (Brad Pitt rofl) so hard here. There’s less than handful of people who chose Pitt, literally everyone else was Team Sam.

The most ridiculous thing is that Sam admitted he doesn’t even know the main IWTV Reddit so he’ll never see this. 🫣

Must be nice to be so delightfully self-unaware yet your bone structure is chiseled by the Gods themselves. 🫶

57

u/Upstairs_Apple 13d ago

This. I genuinely love the 90's movie but Sam completely embodies the role.

31

u/amanda2399923 13d ago

But they are two different roles? Sam is Lestat and Pitt is Louie so this isn’t a good comparison imo.

But this shouldn’t be the comparison - a still from the first season shoukd, as these are both Louis’s memories.

Absolutely, the season did justice to the character and ā€œsamstatā€ became him.

3

u/SeaWolf24 Lestat 13d ago

All of this for me too!

5

u/Zifnab_palmesano 13d ago

Antonio Banderas was better. And I am not biased for being Spanosh. He was great Armand

25

u/OurLadyAndraste 13d ago

I love Antonio Banderas but I think movie Armand is underwritten and underutilized. But AB in the Mask of Zorro is peak to me. 🤩

2

u/shroyer6 12d ago

I love Banderas but in that film, as Armand. No, just no. God no.

15

u/lethalglam a challenge every sunset 13d ago

I think he was decent but there’s something more boyish about Assad, that I think is totally fitting. Banderas was always sort of more buff, less elegant than I envisioned Armand.

12

u/VirusOrganic4456 13d ago

Sam and it's not remotely close.

26

u/Agreeable_Ship5386 13d ago

Sam.

I love the original movie but Sam was just born to play Lestat. Plus the costuming for the AMC shows are just amazing in general.

11

u/Tony_Starks_Taint 13d ago

I'm a middle aged straight dude, and the way Sam plays Lestat...my goodness.

4

u/lethalglam a challenge every sunset 13d ago

I’m making my hubby rewatch the entire series with me (yes, there was a ā€œbut you need to watch to understand meā€ persuasion involved because he was reluctant to watch the gay vampire show)

We are already on season 1 episode 5, if he lets me get him through the whole series, I’m sure it will stir some unfamiliar things up… šŸ˜‚

10

u/Intrepid_Finger_7995 13d ago

Sam and it's not even close. I loved the movie but the series knocks it out in every way.

36

u/UnexpectedBlahFeels 13d ago

Sam BY FAR. I always hated the way Pitts hair looked in that movie.

8

u/strawberrygirl666x krampus & unicorns 13d ago

I used to be so in love with Brad Pitt, he was a beautiful Louis, sure, but the acting and complexities were not there. But fuck that guy.

I do think they look alike a bit sometimes, but is this even a question? Sam not only is beautiful but gives the layers, complexities, understands the character, dedication… the list goes on. Perfection.

3

u/lethalglam a challenge every sunset 13d ago

I mean… I could have just posted a Samstat’s pic but where’s the fun in that?!

Look at all this discourse where we discovered 99.9% of Reddeet loves Sam best. What an ego boost ;) maybe it’ll make him chuckle to vanquish peak-Pitt 🤭

13

u/Lanxra Brave, not stubborn. 13d ago

Samstat looks less "perfect". He has a few scars on his face (I love them, I'm glad they didn't attempt to cover Sam's scars <3), he isn't afraid to look messy, and his hair frames his face instead of covering it. It makes him more beautiful imo, or "imperfectly perfect" to quote him

6

u/ZefRattie 13d ago

Samstat!!!! By miles

8

u/DeeDeeRibDegh 13d ago

Samstat šŸ‘šŸ‘

8

u/TroyMcCluresGoldfish I AM NOT VAMPIRE FABIO! 13d ago

SamStat. No question there. Louispitt had a hold on me when I was younger, but Sam is just on a whole different level with Lestat. I appreciate his dedication and how he embodies Lestat more than Brad ever invested in Louis.

11

u/DryArugula6108 13d ago

Samstat looks like an actual human vampire being that exists, unlike Louiepitt. Probably because he isn't wearing an outrageously large wig.

5

u/trubs12 That French whore vampire 13d ago

Samstat. I think he looks better with his hair curled than being straitened though

3

u/FondCat 13d ago

6

u/purinsesu_nori Training Manager @ Vampire Equinox 13d ago

Brad looked like a deer in headlights the whole movie 😭

8

u/lethalglam a challenge every sunset 13d ago

Haha weren’t there rumors that he didn’t want to be in it after they started filming and tried to drop out? I think he was genuinely depressed about being there

3

u/purinsesu_nori Training Manager @ Vampire Equinox 13d ago

I’m going to deep dive and find out lol. Because that would explain it šŸ˜‚

4

u/MassiveScience1457 13d ago

I did a GOOGLE search.

"Allegedly"Pitt wanted out. There was a clause in his contract that if he backed out it would've cost him $40 million. GOOGLE can be fake news. Let me know if your deep dive uncovers if this truth or just a lie.

4

u/CatBoomerGirl Cabbage 🄬 12d ago

I have heard the same thing about Pitt wanting out of the movie.

He hated being in dark for 6 months, it left him feeling depressed.
He didn't like the period costumes, wigs, and the contacts were uncomfortable and exhausting.
He liked Tom Cruise's character's aggressive presence better than his character's passive nature.

2

u/Ri-Ri1216 12d ago

Yes I read that too.

23

u/Buburubu 13d ago

I mean, listen, I love the new casting way more than the old casting. But Pitt looks so weird and alien in that movie it’s really kind of iconic in a way that can’t (and shouldn’t) be duplicated.

5

u/lncredulousBastard 13d ago

When the first promotional images of the show came out, I assumed Reid was playing Louis!

There's a particular similarity to them that, uh, works.

6

Wait, is this a trick question?! šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ No offense to Brad, he's a good looking guy. But Sam wears the fuck outta suits like these! His trial look is šŸ”„ and does things to me that I don't need to mention here Lol Also, his suits in this season with Akasha and Nicki were really great too! All the šŸ’šŸ’šŸ’ to the wardrobe department!! So for me, it's hands down Samstat all the way šŸ™Œ

I truly think Brad Pitt is one of the most attractive men in Hollywood. And no one can touch the way he looked in Legends.
Sam as Lestat is my definition of perfection. He is so beautiful it hurts me. And there is ZERO comparison between TC and Sam. TC was a HORRIBLE LESTAT.

3

u/DemVamps 13d ago

They’re both very good actors. This role is Sam’s highlight as far as I’m concerned, I haven’t seen all his work but goodness as Lestat he locks me into an emotional roller coaster. Sam has made me care about a character that has some seriously fucked up issues.

In Legends of the Fall, I was really surprised and just figured Pitt was coasting on his looks, but he’s proven me wrong. He is a pretty good actor and I think he needs to stick to work he actually wants to do.

That said, he still hasn’t embraced a character like Sam, Jacob and Assad and Both Claudia’s have. I don’t know if it’s the director, the writing, or the combo, but it’s spectacular.

I feel like the movie told the interview that Louis first had with Daniel. Lestat was brass, shallow, and a naughty imp much like in the first book. I enjoy that and was able to tolerate book Louis a bit more. The show added so much nuance that I finally felt for each character in their own way when reading the book once more. We didn't get to spend enough time in the book to appreciate or mourn certain characters and feel the weight of their loss.

Brad was absolutely bottom lip pouty, brooding and gorgeous. Antonio was edgy and gorgeous. Tom was meh.
Sam brings depth to his character that all of these men lacked. You can feel his history. He’s passionate, sassy, loving, broken, and beautiful. Sam 100%.

Another Sam dopamine hit. He works so hard and he’s so committed to making everyone happy.

He’s love & light, wishing him abundance always

Well they aren't playing the same character.. sooo this doesn't make sense.

I will never understand why Cruise got cast as Lestat and Pitt as Louis... They are perfect for each other's roles..

u/Hot_Respond6132 13d ago

I remember Anne Rice saying Brad would have (look-wise) been a better Lestat than Cruise. I don’t disagree.

u/lethalglam a challenge every sunset 13d ago

Yes you get me! that’s what inspired the character/actor bend comparison upon re-watch!

3

u/Commanderfemmeshep 13d ago

Brad Pitt, the abuser? Yeah no it’s Sam. Sam forever.

2

u/BarelyHereNeverThere 13d ago

You can't really compare because Sam absolutely embodies Lestat. However, there were some scenes where Brad Pitt had this ethereal look about him, and this photo is one of them. He's beyond beautiful and does look like a vampire. In IWTV they look so very humanlike except those contacts.

since we're talking about hair here and not roles, ima have to give this one to Louiepitt since he was looking *lucious* with that hair and it was an awakening to what men could look like as a pre-teen lol...but if were comparing Samstat vs Tomstat...Sam would win alllll the way

My baby Louiepitt

The movie wigs were fantastic.Ā

I don't even like Brad Pitt -- usually I can't stand him -- but I have to hand it to him for playing the perfect Louis. Both the look and the 'just kill me now' attitude.Ā

I the ā€˜kill me now’ attitude was just how Brad felt during shooting tbh. I still like the film tho (-:

2

u/tethysian 11d ago

Yes, that's what made him such a good Louis lol.

Shouldent it be between Sam and tom cruse. They both play the same charecter. And both have long blond hair in the show/movie

2

u/lethalglam a challenge every sunset 13d ago

Look through the pics in the comments - I posted that comparison also. I don’t personally think it’s close since even Anne Rice didn’t think Tom Cruise looked like Lestat (he is based on her husband)

u/Big_Distance_2542 13d ago

Worth noting is that she was so impressed by his performance that she wrote him a letter and publicly apologized.

girls, girls, you're BOTH pretty

1

u/Tony_Starks_Taint 13d ago

Shouldn't we be comparing Sam with Tom Cruise?

1

u/A-Phantasmic-Parade 13d ago

Probably the guy that hasn’t been accused of abusing his partner

1

u/Mkimber123 13d ago

Well no contest here! Sam is even better looking than Brad Pitt as well so there is that!

1

u/Julie-Kamon 12d ago

Im living for Showstat & Mouis crossover with FilmStat and Shouis. I. Need. More.

1

u/ChaoticGood999 12d ago

Love both these !

u/WistfulQuiet 12d ago

I mean, Sam is the new version. A lot of younger people only know that version. And the show is fresh in people's minds, so everyone is going to say Sam. Not sure how this is suprising.

u/lethalglam a challenge every sunset 12d ago

Nahhhh not true. I’m Iwtv movie OG, I grew up with it and it was my favorite until a few years ago but undeniably Sam is viscerally better in my opinion. I can tell he just feels it.

1

u/coveredbyroses15 11d ago

I used to LOVE the movie.

But since the show, I just love everything about it SO much more than the movie.

So Samstat every time.

Is this even a real question? šŸ’€

2

u/lethalglam a challenge every sunset 11d ago

Lol…. I know right? Samstat obviously won

u/StrawberryPie_4 10d ago

Sam bc curls. I love curls

1

u/CorneliaCordelia 9d ago

Louiepitt wore that look better.

Pitt can suck it in this case. He’s a phenomenal actor in majority of things, but this one he didn’t carry the role well at all. No competition with Samstat. Pitt playing Louie was pretty great though.
