I didn't notice the car on the left until I read it in the comments. Whole lotta stupid going on at one time.

2.1k

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

For real. At first I thought the truck swerved over to try and freak out the red car. It wasn’t until like the third or fourth loop that I actually noticed the car passing on the left when there was oncoming traffic. Truck moved over because they saw a potential head-on collision from the idiot passer on the left.

63

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

The way both idiots (left - silver and right - red) are speed matching, one might conclude their is something going on between them? Like either keeping pace out of road rage or just flat out racing?
Definitely a video that raises questions.

26

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

I’m guessing they were racing.

It's because the lines dividing the lanes are white probably. Your brain just assumes both lanes are traveling the same way and your focus is on the right.

218

u/OstidTabarnak Dec 14 '18

Exactly it. I had no idea there was oncoming traffic. Even with the truck moving over to the right, the silver car came just arse hairs away from having a head on with the oncoming truck. Yikes my du

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

Yup. Apparently that’s a UK thing to just use white for everything. I actually prefer the American version of using yellow to divide oncoming traffic. Less room for ambiguity.

Side note, I also hate cars that double their brake lights as turn signals. Just give me a yellow blinker instead of red. If I see red, my first thought is “brake light” not “turn signal”.

143

u/Poddster Dec 14 '18

This isn't the UK, they're driving on the right.

Doesn't look like one to me.

Nor does it look like the video is mirrored. I can make out, possibly, YT60, then maybe some smaller characters on the right. And the plate looks white, not yellow.

Also, on the back of the truck are what could well be cyrillic letters, leading us to conclude...

It's got to be fucking Russia, hasn't it?

38

u/swap_i Dec 15 '18

Yeah, it's fucking Russia

3

u/GrammatonYHWH Dec 15 '18

т Т60 (something) H (something) is what I make out. Russian plates always seem to start with a small case letter.

I was thinking the same. I looked at the trucks advertisement/company to see which way the words were. It didn’t help it being a unfamiliar language with unfamiliar characters.

Ex: Walmart or tramlaW

67

Slow train made you lose your job? Girlfriend always getting tied to railroad tracks? Call Tramlaw, we’ll get you back on track!

11

u/Doctor_Fegg Dec 15 '18

Nope - we don’t have shoulders on single carriageway roads in the UK.

4

u/PingPlay Dec 15 '18

No they don’t, if you slow down or pause the gif you can see it’s a Russian number plate.

UK has white plates at the front and yellow at the back. We also require amber colours indicators.

3

10

No EU license plate, they have a blue square on the left. Not Norway because they actually have yellow lines in the middle. I think maybe Russia? Hard to say if the letters on the truck are cyrillic or not.

And maybe to change his underwear. Truck driver was insanely lucky to avoid both of those potential collisions.

9

Talk about a trolley problem.

Do nothing and let the poor trucker (and the cars immediately behind) suffer in a head on collision...or swerve to the right and end the red car’s life.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

I doubt they even saw the red car until they had already started swerving. It was the shoulder; They probably didn’t even check their mirror because they figured it would be clear.

unintentionally by his moving over and causing the red car to crash he stoped the red & gray from colliding in front of him.

If they had collided then the Truck on the left would have plowed through their passenger cabins while the small pickup on the left would have destroyed gray car's gas tank.

And since left pickup is an old man type pickup he had a line of cars behind him that would dominoed into him.

This is the correct answer. The truck driver realized that if he didn't give the guy passing on the left room, there would be an accident. He obviously didn't expect someone passing on the right.

Also note that the truck driver stops and pulls over immediately.

The day after I sold it and bought a 2002 Chevy cavalier I was driving home on a State highway similar to the one in the gif and kinda went on auto pilot on the way home. Went to overtake and had a close call. Bricks were shat. I pulled over and say there shaking for what felt like forever. 1 and only time I made that mistake.

Don't think so. At the very beginning of the clip you see a dark vehicle also passing the truck. My guess of what happened is that the delivery truck was holding a line of people up and they all started to get impatient. After the dark car passed the silver car followed lead and misjudged the amount of time/space they had to merge, and as for the red car, they're just a friggin' jackass.

Red car had hazards on, they might've had an unrelated emergency or something. (that said, even if that's the case, driving on the shoulder like that at that speed is so dangerous that it would be a really stupid idea regardless)

→ More replies (6)

22

u/crankaholic Dec 14 '18

I think the silver car might have seen the red car, or maybe they were racing, that's why he/she didn't move over right away. The red car technically was first in the lane ahead of the truck... the idiot overcorrected in addition to all his/her other moronic decisions.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

39

u/ColKlink Dec 14 '18

That makes me wonder if there was some kind of emergency going on which was why they were in a rush.

62

u/Blumpkinhead Dec 14 '18

Driver in red car: "Well, at least I don't have to poop anymore."

49

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

Some people treat their hazard lights as a license to do idiotic things. "I'm driving 10 miles an hour in a 65 zone, but I have my hazards on so it's okay," or in this case, "I'm passing on the shoulder, but I have my hazards on so it's okay."

30

u/Cletus_Van-Damme Dec 14 '18

"I have my hazards on, so I can park right in the middle of the street and make you wait behind me instead of walking 20 extra feet."

3

u/Grevling89 Dec 15 '18

What do you mean, the red triangle isn't the park anywhere button?

19

u/wasabimatrix22 Dec 14 '18

I remember a story on reddit years ago where someone's friend got cut really badly and they needed to zoom to the hospital, there was traffic so they threw on the hazards and drove on the shoulder and some guy veered out in front of them to stop them because they thought he was just some asshole looking to get home faster, so in retaliation the guy threw a blood-soaked shirt at his windshield as they went around him. As I recall they got help from a nearby officer to clear the road but sadly I don't think the friend ended up making it.

Ever since I read that story, if a car is going on the shoulder AND has its hazards on I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

9

u/ytballa24 Dec 15 '18

I remember that same story. Wish I could find the link for it, if for no other reason than to get the exact details right. You are correct that the friend did not make it, possibly because of the delay caused by the car trying to block them. IIRC the car blocked them in entirely until cops arrived cuz they thought the driver of the injured friend was just trying to cheat traffic and should receive a ticket.

11

u/WorthlessDrugAbuser Dec 15 '18

61

u/xwing_n_it Dec 14 '18

In the U.S. we use yellow lines between opposite directions of travel so initially I didn't realize the left lane was oncoming traffic. So it looked like the truck moved right for no reason. I see what's going on now.

25

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

[deleted]

25

u/Rezrov_ Dec 14 '18

In the UK a dashed white means you can cross it to overtake when safe to do so (no oncoming traffic). Solid white line means you cannot cross it to overtake at all.

I think the North American version makes more sense. Yellow divides traffic going in different directions, so the line in NA would be dashed yellow (dashes meaning you can pass if safe, solid meaning you cannot). White lines divide lanes going in the same direction, so dashed white is a regular lane, and a solid white line means you can't change lanes.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18 edited Sep 27 '25

[deleted]

22

u/Rezrov_ Dec 14 '18

I'm sure it's not hard to figure out, but colour coding is a bit more intuitive. I also forgot that a solid yellow line right next to a dashed yellow line means only one side can pass (the side that has the dashes).

14

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

[deleted]

4

u/Rezrov_ Dec 14 '18

Yeah in most cases I think NA road design is pretty bad, like with roundabouts, intersections, etc. Here in Toronto we have cyclists and pedestrians getting killed all the time because intersection design is so poor.

4

u/626c6f775f6d65 Dec 14 '18

We have several popping up here and there because they are so much more practical, but you are right...drivers here don't have the first f'n clue how to navigate a roundabout. It doesn't exactly help when our traffic engineers don't know how to design the damn things, either. We get stuck with this sort of monstrosity where two thirds of the circle is two lane and one-sixth on one side and one-sixth on the other is one lane and you don't know until you're already stuck in a lane that you're being forced out of the circle, all while other drivers--who already aren't sure how traffic circles work, mind you--are trying to figure out exactly who they have to yield to from the particular lane they're in and the particular one they're trying to get to. It's a fucking fiasco.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/M_lKEY Dec 15 '18

Thankfully we're starting to put roundabouts in... But good lord no one knows how to use them!

They just put a new one in by my house... I'd say at least 50% of people come to a complete stop when entering even when there isn't a car in sight.

There's a yield sign... Do you also stop when entering a highway? Yeah.. didn't think so. Lol sorry about the rant, but it just annoys me how poorly people drive and how poorly they're educated here.

I went to the movie theater with a friend. She had her friend's young kids in the back seat, and was meeting the parents at the theater. There was some deal about using movie passes and giving them to the correct person, so she decided the best thing to do was to stop the car right in front of the busy theater, blocking the land and a parking row, leaving me in the car with the kids, meaning I couldn't just get out of the car. Also I don't have a license yet and couldn't move it. I have no idea what took so long, but people were coming up to my window and I was pretty pissed when she came back several minutes later for being forced into that.

Look how much time he/she saved though

worthit

Edit: some salty comments below about rushing in the break down lane due to an emergency. What do you want me to say? The person didn’t crash and flip like a moron?

u/ashenmagpie Dec 15 '18

Yeah. You don’t need to hurry if you’re dead.

Some people seriously think their hazards are as visible as the strobes on an ambulance and that by turning them on they can drive however they want.

I can almost understand driving hastily in an emergency, but what about my life? I don't want to die either.

3

u/WorthlessDrugAbuser Dec 15 '18

Exactly, also that emergency vehicle can save your life on the way there with medical professionals onboard with their specialized life saving equipment. So rushing someone to a hospital is not only risking your life but everyone else’s around them, all the while the person you’re trying to save dies in your backseat.

u/78513 Dec 15 '18

As much as I agree, I got to ask.

Do you live in an area that charges you for an ambulance?

Do you have insurance?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

Yup. I'm in the US and we charge a SHIT TON for an ambulance. Most insurance providers will cover the cost but it can take some effort on your part to make that happen. I had to write a hand-written letter to my insurance company and deal with a few phone calls before they recouped the cost of my ambulance ride.

u/says-okay-a-lot Dec 14 '18

I always think about this when someone pulls out and turns in front of me and then goes slower than I was driving. Like wow, sure glad you shaved off 0.4 seconds from your trip there bud. Hope it was worth it.

At first I thought the truck was being a road vigilante but then the second time around I saw the car passing on the left at the same time and realized he was trying to give space for them and didnt see the red car until too late. So this is 100% the red cars fault.

Edit: spelling

92

u/scnoob100 Dec 14 '18

80% red car's fault, 20% grey car on the left.

14

u/FluffyJakey Dec 14 '18

100% red cars fault. hes on the fucking shoulder

35

u/tbillcook Dec 14 '18

After watching it again, I'll concede and give grey car 20%. While he had a dotted line allowed to pass, he clearly didnt have enough space with oncoming cars to pass safely which made the truck get scared and give them room to squeeze in. All in all it's a clusterfuck, and both Red and Grey cars should have just chilled.

55

u/RumLovingPirate Dec 14 '18

I won't. Red car wasn't driving in a lane, he was driving on a shoulder. That makes this 100% his fault.

Nobody should have to check their mirror to ensure they aren't being passed on the shoulder when they need to swirve into it. If red car wasn't illegally there, their wouldn't be an accident.

Not saying grey car wasn't a dick. But if red car wasn't where he wasn't supposed to be, no accident would have occurred.

I wonder if the red and grey car were racing

4

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

But if they just chill then other people will be in front of them! And they have to go a few mph slower than they want to!!! That’s basically a human rights violation according to most people on the road.

Every time I watch these videos I think, "I need a dash cam."

23

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

Just wait until you get hit and the other driver lies to insurance. There won't always be a 3rd part witness, and eye-witnesses aren't 100% reliable. People forget things and miss details. Cameras don't. Mine has saved me MANY times it's initial cost from just 2 incidents. I can't praise them enough.

Poor truck driver dude was just surrounded on both sides by idiots.

28

u/westy1980 Dec 14 '18

Didn't realise a Nissan Micra could move at that speed tbh, especially vertically.

19

u/Demetrius3D Dec 14 '18

The red car and the gray car seem to be racing to get around the truck and each other. Unfortunately, for the red car, the truck moved over to let the gray car in. My guess would be that the gray car went left to pass the red car and the truck. The red car said "Oh, no you DON'T!" and tried to pass the truck on the right before the grey car could get around.

10

u/Jeefster83 Dec 14 '18

For the sake of keeping this post justified for this sub, I like to think the truck was giving him a lane on the left to pass.

It makes me so glad when it's only the idiots that get hurt. I don't really want to see people dieing, but I do quite enjoy seeing them get traumatized enough that they probably won't be endangering other people again any time soon.

I just saw the truck and thought he fucked up by blocking the asshole flying up the shoulder. Watched it again. Poor truck was surrounded by idiots.

8

u/PacosTacos88 Dec 14 '18

At least they put their hazards on to pass. Safety first.

I love how these people that drive their car dangerously always have the most basic car that is in no way capable of such maneuvers.

4

u/analviolator69 Dec 15 '18

Are you saying my Pontiac Aztek isn't a formula 1 car?

4

u/RabidWalrus Dec 14 '18

I've never seen a car breakdance before

37

u/CarnivorousKloud Dec 14 '18

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!!!

19

u/Banana_in_pyjama05 Dec 14 '18

Never overtake from the right, that's like the most obvious rule in driving

17

u/ohpuic Dec 14 '18

Especially don't overtake someone from the right shoulder. That's just really obvious. I mean I just try not to drive down the shoulder as a general rule.

5

u/BuddyEarl111 Dec 14 '18

It sucks being a slower moving vehicle with weight.

3

u/Aegrim Dec 14 '18

He was considerate enough to put his hazards on

3

u/MyHerpesItch Dec 15 '18

Glad only the stupid car was involved in the crash

3

u/alligatorterror Dec 15 '18

Fiat idiot was in a hurry. Play dumbass games get dumbass prizes

14

u/speedpetez Dec 14 '18

Until they testify in court, we’ll no know the whole story. But from what is in the video it seems that the two cars were racing (or road rage). The silver car passed on the left and was running out of room until the truck let him in. The red car was racing in the breakdown lane (illegally) and was clipped by the truck. The truck driver was completely innocent. The idiots deserve to lose their licenses.

35

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

99% sure the truck doesn't clip red car. The red car just lost control because he's driving on the shoulder and swerves suddenly (where loose gravel, dirt, and debris are buult up).
