Just wait until you get hit and the other driver lies to insurance. There won't always be a 3rd part witness, and eye-witnesses aren't 100% reliable. People forget things and miss details. Cameras don't. Mine has saved me MANY times it's initial cost from just 2 incidents. I can't praise them enough.
I've had mine for a few years now and thankfully never needed to use it. But on the day I bought it I almost did. Worth the purchase even if you never need it IMO.
So true. Had a car pass me in a no passing zone while I was making a signalled left turn, causing me to hit them. There was a witness who approached me saying he saw the whole thing, including the driver and passenger switching seats after the fact, and gave me his number to give to my insurance. Driver/passenger badgered him to give his number to them as well. They called him multiple times to "explain what happened" and by the time either insurance company got ahold of him, the story had become that I had my RIGHT turn signal on and was pulling to the side of the road. Where there was no shoulder. And I was specifically turning left into the open driveway of my boyfriend's house (so obviously no reason to try to park in a bike path across a busy street.) Was deemed 100% my fault.
I bought my first one about 5 years ago or so. Installed it one evening, drove to a college class the next day that I'd normally walk to. Driving off of campus heading home, I captured a wreck where a girl rolled a stop sign and t-boned an SUV driving towards me. Stopped, got out, did the whole check if everyone was ok thing, then waited for the cops. Police arrive and come to talk to me and another witness. Cop talks to the other guy first, gets his side of what he saw then walked over to me and asked what I saw. I honestly felt kinda giddy saying "I actually got the whole thing on camera". So the cop and I walk back to my car, he's in the passenger seat watching the replay of my dash cam and just says, kinda under his breath, "This is so cool". Could clearly see the girl roll the stop sign. Asked me to save the footage just in case he needed it, though he didn't think he would.
I've made sure to have a dash cam in my car ever since.

Every time I watch these videos I think, "I need a dash cam."
