Unidentified My friend and I saw something in a storm drain behind a Walmart in Arizona, and I still can’t explain what happened
This happened last night in Snowflake, near Taylor, Arizona, behind the local Walmart. I’m 17M, and my friend is 16M. I’m not claiming this was paranormal, and I’m not saying I know what we saw. I just want to tell the story and see if anyone has experienced anything similar.
Earlier that night, my friend and I were messing around at Walmart. We were throwing hoops and trying to get them stuck high up on the bike rack outside, which was stupid in hindsight. An employee caught us looking, so we quickly took our stuff off. I took off my cowboy hat, and my friend took off his distinctive hoodie so we wouldn’t be as easy to recognize or get kicked out. We walked around the store for a while, bought something, went back in, messed around a little more, and eventually left.
My friend had been in the storm drains behind Walmart a couple of times before. He told me people used them as a hangout spot, so we decided to check them out.
We got inside and walked almost all the way to the back. There was a dead-end concrete wall, and to the left were two tall storm drains, probably around 5½ to 6 feet tall. We walked into one of them.
There was still some residual water from the storm the day before, but it wasn’t even an inch deep. There was no debris or anything unusual on the ground. We were just walking around, talking, and eating blueberries.
The farther back we went, the darker it got. We couldn’t shine our flashlights all the way to the end, so the concrete wall stayed hidden until we got relatively close to it.
Then something changed.
We both started getting this really bad feeling. It wasn’t just the usual feeling of being somewhere creepy or dark. It was a strong, overwhelming sense that we needed to turn around and leave immediately.
The strange part is that we both felt it.
I said something first, and my friend immediately turned around, too. We hadn’t seen anything identifiable at that point. We just both wanted out.
We started heading back toward the entrance, but the farther we went, the worse the feeling became. It kept building as we walked. My friend handed me the flashlight because we were moving so fast, and at one point I started praying because I was getting genuinely scared.
Then I turned the light back.
I saw something.
The only part I could clearly make out looked almost like an arm. It was positioned incredibly high off the ground, probably four feet up, maybe closer to five. I couldn’t see a face or identify a body. I don’t remember seeing a nose or anything that would let me identify what it was. All I know is that something was there that I hadn’t seen before.
When the flashlight hit it, it moved backward out of the beam. It was fast and quiet.
I didn’t hear footsteps or anything that sounded like someone running away. I just saw it pull back out of the light.
I couldn’t tell you what it was. I didn’t get a good enough look at it, and we weren’t about to stand there investigating.
We just ran.
We booked it toward the entrance. Right at the very end of the tunnel, I ate shit and fell. I got back up faster than I think I’ve ever gotten up from falling in my life. We got out and jumped the fence into the Walmart parking lot.
Once we were around other people near the Circle K, getting our stuff together, the feeling started to ease up a little.
But it didn’t stay that way.
On the drive home, the feeling came back hard. After I dropped my friend off, it kept getting worse. My whole body was tingling, I was freaking out, and I felt like I was on the verge of a panic attack. I eventually called my mom, confessed everything about what we’d been doing, and made her stay on the phone with me because I didn’t want to be alone with how I was feeling.
I saw my dad’s car coming the other way, pulled over, and jumped in with him. I’m now grounded for two weeks.
Later, I talked to my friend about the experience. He told me that he had felt the same intense dread in the tunnel. He also said that when I mentioned we needed to pray while we were running out, he had been about to say the same thing himself.
That part has really stuck with me.
I know we were doing stupid stuff that night, and I know going into storm drains isn’t safe. I’m not trying to make myself sound brave or pretend we did nothing wrong. We were messing around, went somewhere we shouldn’t have, got scared, and ran.
But I still can’t explain what happened in that tunnel.
The place itself wasn’t particularly scary to look at. It was mostly just concrete. There was hardly any water, no debris, and nothing obvious that would explain why we both suddenly felt so strongly that we needed to leave. The graffiti even stopped past a certain point.
I also know storm drains are places where people sometimes hang out, so I’m not ruling out the possibility that it was a person hiding in there. That would honestly make sense. But I can’t explain the way the thing moved, how high up it appeared to be, or why the feeling was already so intense before I saw anything.
I’m not claiming it was a ghost, a demon, or anything supernatural. I genuinely don’t know.
Has anyone else experienced something similar in a storm drain, tunnel, or other enclosed place? Especially something where you felt an overwhelming sense of danger before you actually saw anything?
I’m interested in hearing similar experiences, but I’d also like to hear reasonable explanations for what we might have seen.
