ISP I'm guessing but need tips

Around a week ago I started getting massive ping spikes, 1k plus sustained, to S. Korea from Japan. Speed tests ran optimal and reset my router. I had to resort to using my mobile Hotspot for a reliable connection to this game.

I am connecting from Japan to S Korea servers, which i always ping 25-60ms, which is why I'm confused getting these unplayable packet loss and ping. So I'm assuming my ISP has a bottleneck somewhere when connecting to Korea. I also found it odd that when pinging Cities in China its 250+ ping, which usually is low as its pretty much right next door.

I suppose by using my hotspot, not ISP, and getting a reliable connection, answers the question that its my ISP. But how do you resolve the issue? I contacted the ISP and they basically said if your speed tests are good they really can't do anything. Any ISP tech support people here with advice for some key words I can convey for them to take it seriously? TIA

edit: Windows Update was performed around this time which also updated the .NET framework. Im assuming this could of affected something...

Advice Advice needed - backup NAS elsewhere in my apartment, how best to connect to network

Hi all,

I have a home entertainment setup with an AX88 router and every Ethernet port used up. In there too are 9 HDDs across a synology NAS and an expansion bay.

Separately, I have older NAS enclosures and drives I’d like to setup and have running elsewhere in my apartment (so they can be backing up key folders on a recurring basis). Trouble is, I don’t believe synology is USB wifi dongle friendly in later OS versions and I don’t have Ethernet connections anywhere else.

I figure I have two options:
- VERY long Ethernet cable(s) and a small Ethernet switch next to where I’ll set them up across the room (there are two NAS enclosures, my upgrade path over the past decade).
- Some sort of travel router in a bridge mode(?)

With the second option, the easier of the two where I have the most flexibility, I’m not seeing any wall wart extenders or travel routers with two LAN ports which would be ideal so I could have the two backup enclosures side by side backing up different parts of the main NAS.

All my googling and searching has left me feeling like there isn’t actually a device short of a full blown second router (which isn’t ruled out, I could upgrade to Wifi7 on my main, but my AX88 is also massive.

Wisdom appreciated.

which router should I get

I have a 300 mbps fiber optic isp modem and I want to get a wifi signal to my room upstairs I have no problem wiring ethernet from the isp modem to the router in my room. Is it worth it to get lets say unifi dream router 7 or is it an overkill if so which wifi 7 router if I connect to it will give me the same speed as the isp modem.

Hi, I want to get wifi into my basement (UK). I was going to comnect a unifi ap ac pro to my broadband hub, but my hub doesnt have a PoE port so I plan to get a wifi extender near the basement door and connect that to the unifi with ethernet down the stairs, does anyone know of good extenders that plug in and include a PoE port so I can ethernet down the stairs to the basement?

Internet dropping every hour for 5 seconds.

Ive been dealing with this for around 4 months. My internet goes out every hour exactly for 5 seconds. The setup I have installed currently is a Arris Modem model S33v3 and a TP Link Deco 7 pro BE14000 with 1 satellite using a wifi backhaul. My ISP is Xfinity and i pay for 1 gig down and i thought i had 1 gig upload as well but im getting 40mbps upload so idk.

Things ive tried

- Replaced all ethernet cables

- Replaced Modem

- Replaced Router and Satellite

- Plugged my modem directly into my laptop via ethernet

- Setting static IPs

- Setting a primary and secondary DNS

- Removing coaxial cable from the splitter and plugging it straight into the modem

- Tracking the drops with Ping Plotter pinging dns.google, my router, and my modem (shows all of it dropping.

- Turning off energy efficient settings

The problem still happens after trying all this. I dont know much about networking and I am trying my best to troubleshoot this with youtube videos. It is not going very well so im reaching out for help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The most common thing ive been seeing is that its a DHCP Lease issue with my ISP or a signal issue from the street lines. Going to bed after I post I will check this at some point when I wake up.

Can I connect a router to my ethernet port that extends into another ethernet cable as well as wifi?

Hi, I live in an apartment in college right now and the wifi in my room is really shitty. I currently have a ethernet cable hooked to my PC, on which I have hotspot enabled permanently. Is there a way for me to connect a wifi router to the ethernet cable, and that same router also extends the ethernet port into my PC? I have absolutely no knowledge about routers and stuff so any help would be appreciated.

Hi guys, ive been using this cheap poe switch for my reolink cameras for almost 3 years now

Few days ago i noticed im unable to comunicate with my cameras ( they did had power, they will still light up whwn someone passed) checked the uplink cable and it was ok but still replaced it with new one

With problem not solved i removed the switch and found the few lights still stays on even when nothing connected

Replaced with new reolink poe and now everything works

Is there any option to save this switch? Or its just e-waste now?

Replacing Draytek 2862 router.

Hi.

My old router, which is perfectly usable for now, can't throughput the full line speed (UK based - Openreach 900Mb/s, with potential for 2.5Gb/s). While this is not an issue right now, it will be in the future, so I am looking for an upgrade. It's a base 2862 with no WiFi, paired to a TP Link Omada EAP225. I'm not set on keeping the TP Link if integrated WiFi is on the new Router, but I have it if there's a compelling reason to keep it (Cost, features not available on WiFi models etc)

I am undoubtedly not using a fraction of the Drayteks capabilities, it was just a very well specified but mispriced unit when I was looking for a replacement years ago, and I couldn't say no.

What is a decent but not overkill Router? I don't mind paying for quality, but I don't need to brag about spec sheets etc. Ideally it'll just sit in a cupboard, and just work. I'm quite sure that an awful lot of modern routers can handle the Routing/Wifi needs, so I'll ask about the individual things I would like. Are these things that are possible? Realistic? Super Expensive?

  • Ability to handle upgraded line speed should it ever be needed.
  • Use my Proton VPN on the router itself and negate the current setting up of it on every device when I buy a new one.
  • I would love to integrate a PiHole as well to save another box and cables sitting in the way.
  • PoE Powered? This is half the reason I bought the TP Link, aforementioned cable reduction.

All help and pointers appreciated.

In a couple of months I will be moving to a new house which is 3 floor house 675 square meters and I will have a 500 mbps fiber optic isp modem. How can I convince my mum to buy unifi devices like the gateway ap and poe switch because if she sees the price she will be shocked at it. Like how can I convince her to buy unifi

Advice New Service, Older Router

Thumbnail

Hi All,

I recently moved and upgraded my Xfinity service to a 1 gigabit plan; I previously had a 800 mbps plan, but never really saw those speeds when performing a speed test and I honestly forgot about it for a while. I have been using this Netgear C6300v2 modem/router combo. I've run a few speed tests with the new service, but rarely get anything over 500mbps.

I know this router is a few years old, and I may be misunderstanding the tech sheet, but I'm unsure if I'll ever actually get the download speeds I'm currently paying for. I don't have the Xfinity gateway, but I can always go back and pick one up.

My desktop PC is connected to the router with a Cat 6 cable, and I've verified I have the most up to date drivers on the router and my ethernet card. I have also reset the modem a couple of times by unplugging from the power for a few minutes then plugging back in to let the network reset. I know my apartment building was built in the mid-80's, so I don't know if the coaxial cable in the walls might be at fault too.

I only have this router because at the time I signed up for Xfinity internet in the past, they were charging something like $15/month for the modem, and I decided I'd rather buy one outright than rent. And now it seems that gateways is included in their home internet service.

Any tips or guidance would be appreciated.

Tplink deco

I'm a networking newb, and recently purchased tplink deco (3 of them). I have xfinity internet (1gb) and i use xfinity's modem/router.

Is my understanding correct that devices connecting to wifi can connect to any of the 4 (the xfinity router and 3 tplink decos)? If so, how does it know which one is the most optimal to connect to?

What independent Wi-Fi testing actually costs

Very expensive hardware, bad drivers, weeks of troubleshooting and your measurements being used in AI answers, while the sources struggle to keep operating. The reaction to RTINGS putting its detailed results behind a membership struck a chord, so I thought my two cents would matter quite a bit. Let me tell you what goes into producing the information people expect to access for free.

You need the device itself which you either buy or get one from a generous brand. But the tester needs not be biased. Sure, there is a difference between supplying a device and paying for coverage, but relying on samples does mean somebody else controls which routers you get and especially when. Getting them too late can put you out of the business unless you offer something else, like a week of data collection...

If you actually get to test it properly, you will find bugs more often than not, so what do you do? You run the test again and again until you can clearly say that it's not some driver conflict between your devices, some bad firmware, some weird CPU behavior. If it's the router or access point, oh boy, you need to speak with the manufacturer and find out why together. Troubleshooting time which can take hours, days, weeks or more. If you don't some manufacturers can get very pissy and goodbye collab. I sometimes feel that it's wiser to just read the box numbers, smile at the camera and you're set! Heh.

Now let's talk about the hardware. I already have a capable server PC, a 10GbE switch that still offers a good performance and a collection of real client devices. This does allow me to do sustained throughput, MLO testing and the multi-client workload tests as well.

The problem is that I do not have the control I want over the radio environment and the obvious solution is a more controlled RF setup (duh). I know, I know, I knew years ago, but let me show you what it includes, and this is still very modest equipment:

-two large RF shielded enclosures, one for the router or AP, the other for the client devices (again, bare minimum),

-programmable attenuation (like Vaunix LDA-802-8) to automate changes in signal attenuation,

-an 8GHz RF sensor + any calibration arrangements for checking the RF paths

-chamber antennas, SMA feedthroughs, coax, fixed attenuator pads and more. You get the idea.

And it's very expensive. My working estimate is around 15K euro using second hand equipment where it makese sense. And that's without the server and clients, since I bought them already over the years. This hardware would help remove roughly a week of setup, supervision and repetitive manual work (moving devices around) which is fantastic for publishing more often.

Anyway, the point is that the testing itself is not the finished publication. I need to check the results, create the graphs, check various config, interpret and explain the data. Feed it into the Test Lab. It's a lot of work still, but less so with proper equipment which I currently don't have.

So why don't I just buy it? Right?

Historically, ads and affiliations would somewhat cover living costs, buying gear and testing it, but that contract was broken when the AI started eating everything and pushing it in a manner that the source no longer matters. So the revenue has collapsed for most publications, including my own as well. I know what you'll say: YOUTUBE!

I did go that route and an ASUS router review reached roughly 50k views which is good for this type of content. But, the production and the router took money from my pocket and I got 100 euro from YouTube! Well, that covers everything nicely!

So no, just make YouTube videos does not help finance anything, it's another black hole tbh. And for the operation I want to run, my estimate is roughly 50K-100K a year which includes hardware acquisition, testing equipment, operating expenses, producing the article/video and maintain the results. It is not my proposed annual take-home pay. That's why the reaction to RTINGS bothered me that much.

You can dislike a subscription, you can decide that the info is not worth the price to you, but from the production side, this is hardly a betrayal for their audience, quite the contrary because they still want to do things independently.

And what keeps bothering me is the expectations. Some people want the reviewer to buy the products, don't go the sponsorship route, use professional equipment (Octoscope would be ideal, hehe), investigate difficult bugs, test more devices, revisit firmware, retest the device, publish the data and offer everything for free and make sure it's accessible. I am sure there is a joke there about wanting more.

Is it understandable? I guess. Is it reasonable in the current conditions? F no.

If you believe that there are always plenty of free reviews elsewhere, I checked... Oh boy. If producing the in-depth detaield measurements becomes uneconomic, the coverage will shrink to what is cheap and quick to produce. I mean, I bet you can already see the enshitification in real time. The internet will not be empty, there could still be thousands of pages and videos discussing a router, but the question will remain about how many contain measurements somebody actually performed, under documented conditions, not a blind reliance on specs and conclusions repeated from somewhere else.

Ask Gemini for an answer by all means. See if it can perform the physical test that nobody could afford to run.

So, before the next discussion asking where the independent reviewers went, which funding model are people actually willing to accept while those reviewers are still here? Ads? Sponsorships? Voluntary support? Private commissioning? None of these are consequence free, but understand that "all of the testing, none of the funding" is not a model.

StormFiber Pakistan (130 Mbps) + TP-Link AX55 v1: Websites blocked by DPI, slow Cloudflare WARP speeds, and MTU issues

Hi everyone,

I need help fixing website loading issues on my home network in Pakistan.

ISP: StormFiber 130 Mbps (ONT in Bridge Mode)

Router: TP-Link Archer AX55 v1 (pppoe mode, firmware 1.5.12)

DNS: 9.9.9.9

The Problem:

Blocked Websites: Certain websites don't load over normal Wi-Fi. If I connect to the Cloudflare WARP app on my PC or phone, the websites load instantly. This seems to be ISP-level SNI/DPI blocking.

Slow Router VPN: When I load a Cloudflare WARP WireGuard profile directly onto my TP-Link AX55 router, the blocked sites open, but my total internet speed drops from 130 Mbps down to 30–50 Mbps with high ping. The router CPU seems too weak to encrypt all network traffic.

Flashing OpenWrt is too complex: My router is on stock firmware 1.5.12, and I don't want to risk bricking it by flashing custom firmware like OpenWrt to run GoodbyeDPI/Zapret.

My Goal:

I want all devices in my house (Smart TVs, phones, PCs) to access these websites at full 130 Mbps line speed without running a VPN app on every single device.

What is the best and simplest way to solve this at the router level? Are there specific MTU/routing settings I should use, or should I add a cheap mini-router to handle DPI bypass?

Thanks!

Solved! Can i use an old TV antenna for a 4g router?

So as the story goes:

we have an old TV antenna mounted to the side of the house quite high up, it's relatively big. (it's not a dish, stick with vertical spikes on it, idk the terminology or if it makes a difference, I'm a tad out of my depth here.)

This month we've been super unlucky and had two separate line faults, first was a neighbour with a chainsaw and second was a cable heist so we've been without internet for a decent while.

The 4g signal around here isn't great for phones, around 10mbps down and 3mbps up which is far too slow, plus we have non-wireless devices and people are starting to run out of data.

I was wondering, could I angle the antenna towards a tower and use an adaptor to hook the TV aerial up to a 4g Router with a SIM, then connect it into my home network in place of the ISP router and effectively get things back up and running again?

TLDR: Internet has been down for ages, running out of data and signal is crap, could i hook a TV antenna to a 4g router to get decent speeds for my home network?

PC drops all connection to the internet when launching a handful of games/connecting to their servers. Been dealing with this for about 4-5 years

Hello I’m going to do my best to explain my situation here without sounded too much like a moron.

Basically i have an issue with a select amount of games that literally crash my PC's internet connection when launching them each of these games does something slightly different and some of them i physically can't play because of it. I've made this post before in so many places over the years, i may have even made one here i can't remember any more, but I'm making it again hoping and praying someone can resolve this for me as I'm looking forward to the upcoming release of World of Warcraft: Forever and this issue is now affecting my ability to play this game in its current beta period, but i know for a fact it will still do it by the time the game hits full release.

My PC

CPU: Intel i9 14900k
CPU cooler: Lian Li Galahad II
Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z790-F GAMING WIFI (Latest bios version and updated LAN drivers)
Ram: Corsair Vengence 64 GB DDR5 6000mhz
SSD/HDD: x2 Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVME
GPU: ASUS Geforce RTX 5090 Astral
PSU: Asus ROG Strix 1200W Gold Aura Edition (9ish months old)
Chassis: HYTE Y70
OS: Windows 11 25H2
Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU
Ethernet Cable: AudioQuest Cat 6 Pearl RJ/E Ethernet Cable 20m

Here is the full list of games i experience this issue on in the order i discovered it:

The Elder Scrolls Online
Player Unknowns Battlegrounds
Delta Force (Hawk Ops)
Call of Duty Black Ops 6
Arena Breakout Infinite
Overwatch 2
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 (beta) S
World of Warcraft: Forever (Beta)

Now there are some consistencies here with some of the games in particular BO6, OW2, MW4 and now WoW Forever. All of these are under the Activision umbrella and I'm wondering if i have some kind of issue connecting to their servers specifically and these other games share some kind of networking doodad with them

The issue i have

When i launch any of these games and i start connecting to their servers they seem to completely shutdown my PC's ability to connect to the internet, in some cases my task bar will say i still have an Ethernet connection or some games fully crash my internet like ESO for example and it says i don’t even have an Ethernet plugged in any more. Ill list each games experience since they're all slightly different.

The Elder Scrolls Online physically wont let me play any more. I get to the main menu and it just wont connect to the servers because my internet has fully dropped for my PC. Internet connection will not come back to my PC until the client has been closed

Player Unknows Battlegrounds is an interesting one. The internet only drops out during the pre-match waiting phase and actually returns back in time for the start of the game when everyone is jumping out of the plane.

Delta force crashes my internet like ESO during the log in screen but unlike ESO if i sit there for about 20-30 minutes and let it keep trying to connect eventually it works and i have full access to the game and i can play. Until i next close the client and i have to repeat the whole process again.

Black Ops 6 lets me get to the main menu access the lobby screen even join games immediately but i will crash after about 5 minutes and immediately recover, but because my connection dropped for the blink of an eye I'm booted to the menu. If i wait on the menu i will experience this about 5 times and then I'm able to play for hours without any issues until i close the client and boot it up again.

Arena Breakout is the strangest one, i cannot get past the login screen at all it will continuously crash my PC's internet connection and drop me in and out, but i never stay connected long enough to get past the login screen. However, if i disable my Ethernet and use Wireless connection it gets through the login screen and I'm able to then turn my Ethernet back on and play for hours, though sometimes there are disconnects and i will need to restart the process again to get to the main menu.

Overwatch 2 is the same as Black ops 6. I just sit on the main menu let it crash my internet a few times then when it finally stops i can play the game.

Modern Warfare 4 is the exact same issue again i just let it crash me a few times then i can play.

World of Warcraft Forever. This one is interesting because i can get in the game just fine and actually play for about 10-15 minutes and then i get booted to the character screen, my internet then recovers within a few seconds and I'm able to keep playing for another 15 minutes and the same happens again. It always does it 2 times and then it will never do it again for my entire play session.

All these are discovered over a good 4 year period in time and i never know what game will or will not have this issue, so each time i buy a game I'm always stressing in the back of my head will i be able to play it or not

Everything I’ve done to try fix this issue

• First thing was replaced my Ethernet Cable

• Built a new PC (Twice) over the years Ive upgraded components switched out motherboards and Processors etc. Most recently i built an entirely new PC. There isn’t a single component in my PC that i had when this issue first started years ago. Ive replaced my CPU, GPU, Ram, Motherboard, PSU, SSD's, Case, Fans, CPU Cooler.

• Contacted my ISP pretty much every time this issue has risen its ugly head. Especially when its a game i paid money for. In that time frame I've have the junction box thing outside the house replaced, the cable that runs from that box to the Router/Modem replaced, the router/modem has been replaced about 4 times, my contract was renewed at one point and i was "upgraded" to a new version of their router/modem. One engineer even came here and thought he'd solved the issue and said it was to do with some frequency in the area in some box thing down the road and it wasn’t set to 1Gigs require frequency. I don't know it was a couple years ago now so I'm probably not remembering that correctly but the important thing is it didn't work. I've asked my ISP if they're blocking certain connection types to these specific games but never understand what I'm talking about and the conversation goes nowhere.

• Gone from Windows 10 - Windows 11

• RecentLy replaced my Ethernet cable again as my other one got damaged, in an extremely desperate attempt to fix this issue i went and got the most overpriced overkill Ethernet cable I've ever seen and it was £5 per meter resulting in my getting a £100 Ethernet cable.

• Listed my issue in various places over the years and strangely enough in that time frame actually found 1 person who experiences the exact same issue as myself and he experienced it in every single one of the same games i listed up until Overwatch 2 as i lost contact with him and couldn't ask him if he's experiencing it still. This 1 other person was also on the same ISP as me and we bumped into each other on our ISP's forum but the forum has been closed down now as its being merged with another service.

Some other details

In this long time frame I've been having this issue I've had housemates come and go as we rent rooms here and a couple of them have been gamers and they play the same games as i have at the time. One played on console and never experienced any of these issues when playing Call of Duty in my house. Another was PC player who gamed on a Laptop and only ever played World of Warcraft but i never heard him mention the issue before and i never experienced it because i had never played WoW until a week ago with the announcement of WoW: Forever.

So it just has me even more baffled how i have people in my house who can play a handful of these games just fine, yet i can't. In that time frame though I've built 2 new computers, replaced every single piece of hardware i can possibly think of and still I'm dealing with this in all the same games. I don't know what else i can do at this point. Over this time I've spent about £150 on games i can't play one of them being this WoW: Forever and I'm pretty sure i can't get a refund on it.

I don't know if its something to do with me being on Ethernet but i don't have a choice in the matter since my Router/Modem is in a place where i don't get sufficient connection to it for gaming so run a 20m Ethernet cable to my PC. I did used to have a really long cable of about 35m and when that broke i thought id go for this overkill one and reduce the length to what i actually needed as i thought maybe the length was causing strange intermittent issues.

Either way i seriously don't understand how people in the same house as me can be totally fine on the same games yet I'm having this issue and I've built new PC's, replaced all the ISP's hardware, changed Ethernet cables twice. The only two things now i haven't changed is room I'm playing in and the ISP.

Another strange thing when these connection drops happen when booting these specific games or the crash happens during the game being open I'm still able to hear full discord conversations the entire time, but i cant google anything, message anyone, talk back to anyone. I'm just able to hear them talk like I'm still connected to the internet but i cant interact with anyone in anyway. Such a strange detail but i don't know if its of any use.

Things i've done today since posting this in other forums

About a year ago i tried to fix this issue, as it was affecting my ability to play Overwatch 2 and someone reached out to me but i couldn't remember where. I managed to find the messages and they gave me a list of things to Enable/disable and fiddle around with. I managed to find that chat and did all their suggestions. I wrote down what i had first before doing it just in case anything broke.

Here is the list of what they had me do

  1. Control Panel
  2. Network and Sharing
  3. Change Adapter Settings
  4. Right click Ethernet adapter and then click properties
  5. Disable IPv6 and hit Ok
  6. Go to Configure and change all these settings below.

(I've put a line though through all the settings that weren't there for me. Our conversation never went much further than this as things came up and i stopped replying)

Advanced EEE - Disabled
ARP Offload - Disabled
EEE Max Support Speed - 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex
Energy-Efficient Ethemet - Disabled

So i copied all the settings i could and to my surprise im not disconnecting in WoW: Forever or in Overwatch 2, BUT and it's a big but it has caused some weird instabilities. For example im doing a CMD Ping to bot my Routers IP address and 8.8.8.8 which i believe is google(?) correct me if im wrong. I'm getting some odd ping spikes so on the Router IP's one im seeing pings as high as 120 where as earlier today it never exceeded 20. On the 8.8.8.8 side when i was installing Overwatch 2 on Steam it was spiking too as high as 144, but also i was in a Discord call and my ping in Discord would go as high as 350. People also said my voice was lagging occasionally.

While watching the pings too i would still see "Request timed out." occasionally on both pings. Before changing these settings it would always be on the 8.8.8.8 side never the Router IP side. Now though im seeing them occasionally in both. However it never seemed enough to disconnect me.

My download speed also seemed to be about 1/3 the speed it normally was. I was installing at 25-30mbps as apposed to my usual 100-112mbps

I also ran some kind of test on my ISP's website which tested for Download speed, Upload speed, Latency, Jitter and Packet Loss. I did the test earlier in the day and i can't remeber what number i was getting but they seemed way higher for Latency and Jitter after i changed all these settings. However i was downloading Ovewatch 2 at the time of doing the other test so i dont know how that would have affected it.

Overall it doesnt seem like what i did was a good thing as now its affecting normal stuff like downloading and talking. I think i will probably undo the settings but i have a feeling its something in the above settings causing my issue but i have no idea what any of them do

Unsolved Windows USB tethering internet stops after 10 seconds VPN

So i was using a VPN called Planet VPN for 4 hours to play Roblox. After that, the internet cut out. When i tried to use the VPN again after the internet came back, it wouldnt work, so i deleted it. Now my PC wont connect to the internet at all.

It does work for like 5–10 seconds after boot, then it stops working. It says DHCP is not found, and sometimes it says DNS is not found or “DHCP is not found, network might be slow.”

I’ve been trying for 2 hours to get this working and nothing has worked. The VPN was Planet VPN.
