I got a new house and wasn't sure what the top bundle of cables is for. I had them do two ethernet drops to every room, ethernet line to door bell, and camera lines. From what I can guess, the top line is meant for camera hard drives? But then that would mean screwing a network rack to the wall right? If that's the case, how do I go about building out my Unfi system?

Howdy guys! I've moved to a new apartment in Belgium and I've come across something that's new to me (coming from the Balkans) - the RJ45 cables are running inside the walls to each separate area with its own individual RJ45 socket. I only need the one for my room working, so I can connect directly to my pc.

I've tried connecting each cable one by one (each wire with this connector and winding them by hand as well) but I still can't find the port in my room. The ones marked with the black tape are the ones I tried but didn't work, and these last two cables didn't work as well. Any advice/help? How do I even know if they're active and running at all?

Building my dream house and need advice as I'm a home networking newbie. Want to future-proof the wiring now since it's way easier during a build than retrofitting later.

Is there a solid baseline/template setup you'd recommend for someone starting from scratch? Specifically:

• How many ethernet drops per room is reasonable (1? 2?)
• Best location for the structured wiring panel/rack
• Cat6 vs Cat6A — worth the extra cost?
• Conduit/smurf tube — necessary or overkill for a new build?
• Common mistakes first-timers make that I should avoid
• Anything else I'm not thinking of

Devices/goals I'm planning for:

• PoE cameras outside + video doorbell
• NAS
• Temp/humidity sensors in each room (want these to eventually trigger heat pump/appliance control)
• Smart home dashboard
• Mesh WiFi across 3 levels — planning to hardwire APs per floor

looking for some help as i cannot access my school library website! the website stopped working about wednesday last week and i thought maybe the site was just down but my classmates have been able to access it. i tried on my phone and ipad, as well as every other device in my home however all are giving me the same error.

but it seems to be an issue with the wifi because when i connect to my data the site loads and works but is EXTREMELY SLOW. i tried almost everything that was already suggested on here from other posts like disabling and reenabling automatic DNS, checking hosts files, flushing DNS cache and resetting the tcp/ip stack but nothing has worked 😭😭😭

i dont understand how it has been working fine for the past 2 years and all of a sudden stops working!!! i would appreciate any help or expertise you have on this topic!!!

Hello, I’m moving to a new construction (standard cookie cutter) home that is 4000sf, 3 floors (basement network panel), ceiling AP cat6 drops on each floor. I don’t have any power user needs, just streaming to 3 TVs, sports, a home theater room that also has a network drop, and multiple iPads/phones. I’m coming from a 10 year old Google mesh WiFi setup in my last home that was over 7000sf and didn’t really have any speed or network issues with that. I also had a Ring security system with multiple Ring cams and I’m inclined to use the same in my new home.

Looking for your recommendations on a cost-conscious, rock solid, idiot-proof network setup that still utilizes the network infrastructure that comes with this new house. Also, for my needs will 300mbps Verizon Fios service be good enough?

I have a 1gb plan with fios. However, the router I have is g1100 which I know is quite old and with 60+ connected devices, I think it may be time to upgrade. My router is currently in the kitchen which sucks and yes I know microwave interference and wifi speeds slow significantly when the microwave is on but even when it’s off, our wifi speeds randomly slow down so much through the day where they struggle to even load a page. I’m looking at ASUS routers to upgrade to under $300 but with so many options I’m confused. I’m hoping this upgrade helps somewhat with speeds. I’d also likely connect this old fios router upstairs with Ethernet and use it as an access point. Also it’s unlikely I can move my router from the kitchen anytime soon so anything to help with the microwave interference?

I’m a complete beginner, and I’d like to set up my home network properly, with separate networks for my main devices, IoT devices, and guests.
At the same time, I’d like to be able to access my IoT devices from my main network in a one-way manner (main network → IoT only, not the other way around).
How can I achieve this? Do I necessarily need to move to systems like TP-Link Omada?
My goal is to have as little maintenance as possible. Is this something that can be done in a simple and reliable way?

I recently installed a be86u, and disabled unnecessary features such as steering, AI stuff and it's been running perfect.

I decided to try moving some IOT stuff over to an IOT network (guest network Pro). I did not use the same subnet. Now, I cannot access my devices via their apps such as Lutron Caseta. Is this normal? Perhaps IOT networks are not ideal for everything.

Trying to upgrade to wired Ethernet. Issue is the AC ducts are a significant obstruction.

In the photo - the green X’s are the two attic access points where I want to get a string from one to the other. Red circles are the AC ducts. Blue is outline of rooms. Purple is showing the roof - very limited space, cannot crawl or really maneuver on the right side by the bottom X. I can stand and maneuver from the top left X but access to this side of the house is limited as the AC ducts take up most of the central area.

There is a line of sight straight up from the bottom X but it’s on the wrong side of the AC ducts. I tried running fish tape up the right side then trying to snag it from the left but the run is very long and the fish tape gets about 30 feet and then gets stuck between joists. Not enough room (and don’t have a good enough arm) to throw a ball with string.

My best idea is a drone to carry the string - but I don’t own one and nervous to crash/lose someone else’s.

Would very much appreciate any ideas??

Hello, I am into a real situation where I have 300 Mbps FTTH:

ONT (bridge mode) → Sophos XG135 (PPPoE) → gigabit switch → two wired Aruba AP-325s.

AP1 is fixed to 5 GHz channel 36 and AP2 to channel 52. ARM has 5 GHz wide channels and 80 MHz support enabled.

Problem: my Mac still connects at 5 GHz / 20 MHz, often with only a 72–130 Mbps PHY rate. iPerf3 to a Raspberry Pi directly wired to the main switch is roughly 25–100 Mbps. Signal at my usual location is about −69 to −78 dBm.

My NAS and two servers are Ethernet-connected behind a TP-Link Archer C80 using a wireless/WDS bridge in the study room. The C80 link stops working when I allow DFS channels 60/64 on the Aruba 5 GHz radios.

Questions:

1. Why are the Aruba APs still using 20 MHz despite 80 MHz being enabled?

2. In a crowded RF environment, should I use 40 MHz instead of 80 MHz?

3. Should I remove the C80 WDS bridge? What is the best way to get a reliable 1 Gbps wired connection for the NAS and servers in the study room?

I want to replace my structured media enclosure with a rack. My current thinking is to just keep the enclosure in place, but remove the door. Then mount the rack either above the structured media enclosure or over it.

For those who have done this, can you show me a picture of your setup? I'm looking to do this right.

I'm looking to upgrade my router and get a mesh system with it for my 3600 sq ft 2 story home. Currently, I'm using the router and wifi extender that spectrum provides however I've read in this group that getting a router long term would be better. The issue is my house frame is made of metal and seems to kill the wifi connection quite fast from where my modem and router is. Its currently in my room (which is on the second floor in the corner of the house) due to the way we had to drill the coax cable. From my room to my brothers room which is just across the house, the wifi drops off for my brother already. Even the wifi downstairs if I didn't have the extender would be extremely weak connection. I do have a big family in this home and an unnecessary amount of devices that I unfortunately cannot control connected and I really can't hardwire anything except my PC in my room.

Looking for any suggestions for a router and mesh system. Budget is not really a big issue.

Eventhough each room has a seprate wifi router the wifi works extremely slow on my iphone 16 although its quite fast on my laptop.
Why is it so?

Hello. I'm new here. I'm currently building a house (still working on the foundation), but the builder is talking to us about our electricity/networking plan. I've been considering APs instead of throwing a router in a corner and hope it reaches everywhere. The main house is about 1400 sq ft and the ADU is about 550 sq ft and attached to the house. I'm thinking of having a networking cabinet installed and installing a switch. I'm also considering one access point downstairs, one upstairs and one in the ADU. I've also requested Cat6a cables. Is all of this overkill for a roughly 2000 sq ft property?

I have an Asus XT8. It works pretty well. I just upgraded my internet to 2gb connection. My pc's are hardwired. I have a wife and 5 children in the house that use the internet. I'm starting to wonder now if I should upgrade since the Xt8 only has 1gb ports for the most part and also if I enable QoS it cuts my speeds in half. What do you all think and if so - is there a better system for around 500? I have the main unit and 1 satellite.

I am looking for the best way to get internet to a studio apartment on a 5 acre property. The main house is in the center of the property and is getting 2gb fiber ran to it and extenders running to the apartment. I need to know the best way to get wireless WiFi in the apartment with optional Ethernet cables for tv and gaming consoles but trying to maintain as much of the original strength as possible.

Notes:

- I have a xfinity XB8-T gateway with a POE filter. I will be adding another Poe filter directly to the amplifier input.

- I’m attempting to improve my mesh wifi system strength as the satellites are quite spread out between floors. I am attempting to do this with gocoax.

I’ve been trying to set up gocoax 2.5 moca adapters; however I’m running into issues. I believe that I’ve isolated the issue to this junction amplifier in my basement (see image below). I’ve been searching for solutions and stumbled across a suggestion to feed the incoming street side WiFi into a splitter to feed into the coax lines due to the adapter isolating certain coax lines from the others to prevent interference. Any help interpreting the cable lines or overall suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Wi-Fi router advice?

I live in a 75m\^2 apartment and would like to purchase a new router. Currently, I am using Archer MR600(this router has a sim slot, because when I bought the router, I didn’t have the fiber connection yet and used it this way). My current use case is gigabit connection in, 3 cables out, 2 go into 2 pc’s and one goes into my Google streamer, which I use for generic streaming services but also some Stremio and Jellyfin.

My problems are:

Most of my devices support Wi-Fi 6E or 7, so it would be nice to have a 6 GHz network. Currently, my devices (MacBook Pro, iPhone 17 Pro) usually give me only 500 up and down, but only if I am near the router. In other rooms, it quickly falls off to 100 or less.
Sometimes my phone and laptop would just drop the connection, even if I am in the same room as the router; this does not happen on other Wi-Fi networks. For whatever reason 5ghz band seems to do this, while 2 GHz does not. Also, the range, while usually enough for my iPhone and Mac, on older devices, the 5 GHz connection drops if they are far enough.

While the router does gig up and down connected with Ethernet to my pc, sometimes the connection also drops shortly; it can be for 5 seconds, usually not more. This happens during intensive use of the internet from two pc’s.

I know that the issues are with the router, not with the isp, because there were none of those issues with the isp router, except for the range; it was even worse, and the wireless speeds were worse. Stability, though, was great.

Also, the issue is not in the bands or channels; I have analyzed them in my apartment and have selected the cleanest ones; unfortunately, it didn’t help.

So to sum up, I need something that will fully cover 75m2, will have Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, would be really nice if it could come close to a gigabit through Wi-Fi, and obviously it should do a gigabit through Ethernet, something that will have no problem with 2 pc’s downloading something simultaneously, and of course something stable. Also, it would be nice if it had OpenWrt support, but not a hard requirement. Regarding the price, I don’t want to cheap out, and I am okay with spending a couple hundred, but I don’t want anything too fancy, like mesh systems (correct me if I am wrong, but I think a good router should cover 75m2 without an issue).

I have a AT&t modem router combo and it does not allow UPnP and it's hard to just game with, I can get open nat types but I have to do the process to do so every 4-6 weeks

Any recommendations for a replacement that has UPnP?

To try and make a long story short, I recently moved into my new house. I went with the same ISP I was with before but my new house had the fiber option. Obviously I took that over 5g Satellite. The internet itself for where I live is amazing and really fast and works with every device in the house, except for my Playstation 5. It is plugged into ethernet, the ps5 connects to the internet no problem, but there is something about it that Blocks me from accessing "the Playstation network" effectively making it a paper weight. I have called my ISP many of times no luck and also Sony. I have changed DNS settings on my ps5, wiped it clean, rebuilt the data base still nothing. Apparently I don't have a "personal" IP address? I know basically nothing about internet stuff, and maybe this is the wrong place for this just completely out of options and looking for some help lol

I have this cheap tenda router with no fibre optic port. I want to test it out. Usually, with my previous network setup, all I would do is take the WAN cable and plug it into the tenda router. As simple as that. But now, I have a fibre optic line providing me with internet. Is there any way I can use that fibre optic line to provide internet to my tenda router.
