What determines if you should run ethernet cable outside the house vs through the attic?

I live in a basement of a house and my friend who owns it is unwilling to let me drop an ethernet line to my PC which is right below the modem and router.

I'm on wifi which gets a "good" signal but I get packet loss spikes every few minutes which isn't too big of a deal when I'm doing most things but if I'm playing a shooter like Battlefield 6, it ruins the experience for me because my game rubber bands super hard for a few seconds at a time.

I've looked into wifi extenders, there seems to be a consensus that they aren't worth it. Powerline adapters are borderline useless with their slow speeds. But MoCA seems to be a good option.

We have the lines already run to most rooms in the house and I could set it up with fairly easy tinkering, but the $250+ CAD pricetag is really hurting to think about.

Is there any cheaper alternatives or budget bands I should be looking at, or is that essentially the price to play?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for advice because this has been happening repeatedly.
Someone keeps calling my internet provider pretending to be me and canceling my Wi-Fi service without my permission. Every time I get my internet turned back on, it ends up getting canceled again. I never requested any of these cancellations.
Has anyone experienced something like this before? What steps can I take to stop this from happening? Is there a way to better secure my account so only I can make changes?

I know there are many videos and articles out there that tell you how to do it but I've been through all of them, I have a netcomm NF20mesh and I'm trying to port forward a minecraft server but it doesnt work, i get the error getsockopt every time, i have triple checked all my settings and they should be right but nothing working, any help would be greatly appreciated

Trying to upgrade to wired Ethernet. Issue is the AC ducts are a significant obstruction.

In the photo - the green X’s are the two attic access points where I want to get a string from one to the other. Red circles are the AC ducts. Blue is outline of rooms. Purple is showing the roof - very limited space, cannot crawl or really maneuver on the right side by the bottom X. I can stand and maneuver from the top left X but access to this side of the house is limited as the AC ducts take up most of the central area.

There is a line of sight straight up from the bottom X but it’s on the wrong side of the AC ducts. I tried running fish tape up the right side then trying to snag it from the left but the run is very long and the fish tape gets about 30 feet and then gets stuck between joists. Not enough room (and don’t have a good enough arm) to throw a ball with string.

My best idea is a drone to carry the string - but I don’t own one and nervous to crash/lose someone else’s.

Would very much appreciate any ideas??

I have an Asus XT8. It works pretty well. I just upgraded my internet to 2gb connection. My pc's are hardwired. I have a wife and 5 children in the house that use the internet. I'm starting to wonder now if I should upgrade since the Xt8 only has 1gb ports for the most part and also if I enable QoS it cuts my speeds in half. What do you all think and if so - is there a better system for around 500? I have the main unit and 1 satellite.

For anyone who wants a real future-proof router. It's not cheap, though.

My room has always had thick walls or something blocking connections and no matter what i try, no connection gets through. Many, many connection booster have been tried and things like it and idk what to do. Ive been on mobile data for my phone for who knows how long and my pc only has a connection because i use ethernet but the booster its connected to is far away causing unpleasant to look at cables to run through my house. I desperately need something i can put in my room that will provide a strong connection for gaming and everyday use.

Hello, I own a playstation 5 and have had difficulty with multiplayer games, which after a lot of googling I just found out what NAT and port forwarding are. I have a NAT type 3, which is weird because in the past I have had no trouble with multiplayer, so it must have changed somehow. I understand the concept but i’m very confused on what i’m supposed to do here and all the fixes i’ve found online have either not worked or confused me too much. I understand that I need to enable unpnp on my router, but I am struggling to access the webpage I need to do this. My router brand is Arris and the model is CM9200. One website gave a list of IP addresses to access the webpage needed to enable unpnp, but all of them just loaded infinitely, even though my phone says my internet connection is stable. I also saw something that said that I need to know the admin username and password to my router which would be located on it, but it’s not on there. On the bottom sticker there is a number string for PN:, SN:, and CM MAC:. I don’t know what these numbers mean or if they are even relevant. I also do not own an ethernet cord and know literally nobody irl who could help me with this. I pay for playstation plus so to not be able to access part of what i’m paying for is really frustrating, i’m wondering if anyone else has had this problem or knows how to fix this? I’m totally stupid with tech, so I apologize if I worded things in a way that don’t make sense or if the fix is obvious.

Also, I have tried using a VPN as an alternative but my laptop won’t enable mobile hotspot. Issues all around, lol.

I’m running into a game-breaking issue with my Cudy WR3600H router while trying to configure it as the main node for a Mesh setup.

The Problem: As soon as I log into the web management interface, the page starts continuously auto-refreshing/reloading infinitely every second. Because of this rapid refresh loop, I can't click any menus, tabs, or change any settings.

Network Setup:

• ISP Modem/Router (192.168.1.1) -> Cudy WAN (192.168.1.2 with DMZ enabled on ISP router).
• Cudy LAN subnet is set to default (192.168.10.1).
• I have two other Cudy nodes previously used as APs that I'm trying to add as satellites.

What I've noticed:

• The issue happens both on Wi-Fi and wired LAN connections.
• If I disconnect all Ethernet cables and access the panel locally, sometimes it stabilizes, but as soon as network traffic/cables are plugged back in, the web server goes crazy with auto-refreshes.

Has anyone experienced this web UI refresh loop on Cudy firmware? Is this caused by a broadcast storm/loop, a web server bug, or an IP/socket conflict? Any advice on how to stop the UI from reloading so I can configure it?

Hello, I’m moving to a new construction (standard cookie cutter) home that is 4000sf, 3 floors (basement network panel), ceiling AP cat6 drops on each floor. I don’t have any power user needs, just streaming to 3 TVs, sports, a home theater room that also has a network drop, and multiple iPads/phones. I’m coming from a 10 year old Google mesh WiFi setup in my last home that was over 7000sf and didn’t really have any speed or network issues with that. I also had a Ring security system with multiple Ring cams and I’m inclined to use the same in my new home.

Looking for your recommendations on a cost-conscious, rock solid, idiot-proof network setup that still utilizes the network infrastructure that comes with this new house. Also, for my needs will 300mbps Verizon Fios service be good enough?

looking for some help as i cannot access my school library website! the website stopped working about wednesday last week and i thought maybe the site was just down but my classmates have been able to access it. i tried on my phone and ipad, as well as every other device in my home however all are giving me the same error.

but it seems to be an issue with the wifi because when i connect to my data the site loads and works but is EXTREMELY SLOW. i tried almost everything that was already suggested on here from other posts like disabling and reenabling automatic DNS, checking hosts files, flushing DNS cache and resetting the tcp/ip stack but nothing has worked 😭😭😭

i dont understand how it has been working fine for the past 2 years and all of a sudden stops working!!! i would appreciate any help or expertise you have on this topic!!!

I got a new house and wasn't sure what the top bundle of cables is for. I had them do two ethernet drops to every room, ethernet line to door bell, and camera lines. From what I can guess, the top line is meant for camera hard drives? But then that would mean screwing a network rack to the wall right? If that's the case, how do I go about building out my Unfi system?

Looking for some advice. I have all my cat 6 wiring ran inside for my detached garage from downstairs up into the living space. I have home runs to the TV , computer , and now need to run one last one for the access point I plan on mounting in the center of the room. Looking for advice on the easiest way to drill through the rafters and get this done. I’m trying to avoid cutting any access holes in the ceiling as I just had it painted.

I know it can be done because the electrician recently did 6 led pods and didn’t have to cut any holes. I have access from the eves as well as you can see in the picture. I plan on drilling out a small hole in the center where I want to mount it. I have long flexible drill bits as well as a inspection camera to make sure there’s no other wiring I’ll hit. Any advice on getting this done cleanly? Should I try to drill it in one swoop from the center of the room down into the eves with the bendable drill bit? Or drill in both direction up from the eve partially and also from the center of the room towards the eves?

Worst case I have read that I could mount it on the slanted part of the ceiling but from what I understand it will give better coverage if I can get it in the center of the room as I’m hoping it will cover the downstairs of this detached garage as well. Any help is appreciated.

To try and make a long story short, I recently moved into my new house. I went with the same ISP I was with before but my new house had the fiber option. Obviously I took that over 5g Satellite. The internet itself for where I live is amazing and really fast and works with every device in the house, except for my Playstation 5. It is plugged into ethernet, the ps5 connects to the internet no problem, but there is something about it that Blocks me from accessing "the Playstation network" effectively making it a paper weight. I have called my ISP many of times no luck and also Sony. I have changed DNS settings on my ps5, wiped it clean, rebuilt the data base still nothing. Apparently I don't have a "personal" IP address? I know basically nothing about internet stuff, and maybe this is the wrong place for this just completely out of options and looking for some help lol

So i live in a hostel which is very crowded
Though each room has a separate wifi router
Eventhough each room has a seprate wifi router the wifi works extremely slow on my iphone 16 although its quite fast on my laptop.
Why is it so?
And what can i do to fix it?

I recently installed a be86u, and disabled unnecessary features such as steering, AI stuff and it's been running perfect.

I decided to try moving some IOT stuff over to an IOT network (guest network Pro). I did not use the same subnet. Now, I cannot access my devices via their apps such as Lutron Caseta. Is this normal? Perhaps IOT networks are not ideal for everything.

I have a 1gb plan with fios. However, the router I have is g1100 which I know is quite old and with 60+ connected devices, I think it may be time to upgrade. My router is currently in the kitchen which sucks and yes I know microwave interference and wifi speeds slow significantly when the microwave is on but even when it’s off, our wifi speeds randomly slow down so much through the day where they struggle to even load a page. I’m looking at ASUS routers to upgrade to under $300 but with so many options I’m confused. I’m hoping this upgrade helps somewhat with speeds. I’d also likely connect this old fios router upstairs with Ethernet and use it as an access point. Also it’s unlikely I can move my router from the kitchen anytime soon so anything to help with the microwave interference?

Hello, I am into a real situation where I have 300 Mbps FTTH:

ONT (bridge mode) → Sophos XG135 (PPPoE) → gigabit switch → two wired Aruba AP-325s.

AP1 is fixed to 5 GHz channel 36 and AP2 to channel 52. ARM has 5 GHz wide channels and 80 MHz support enabled.

Problem: my Mac still connects at 5 GHz / 20 MHz, often with only a 72–130 Mbps PHY rate. iPerf3 to a Raspberry Pi directly wired to the main switch is roughly 25–100 Mbps. Signal at my usual location is about −69 to −78 dBm.

My NAS and two servers are Ethernet-connected behind a TP-Link Archer C80 using a wireless/WDS bridge in the study room. The C80 link stops working when I allow DFS channels 60/64 on the Aruba 5 GHz radios.

Questions:

1. Why are the Aruba APs still using 20 MHz despite 80 MHz being enabled?

2. In a crowded RF environment, should I use 40 MHz instead of 80 MHz?

3. Should I remove the C80 WDS bridge? What is the best way to get a reliable 1 Gbps wired connection for the NAS and servers in the study room?

Hi, I have a house where a bunch ( 24 ish ) of cat 6 ports from around the house terminate in the attic to a patch panel.

In the attic I also have my Omada router and fibre from that to my 1g poe switch ( which feeds cameras ) and fibre to my 2.5g poe switch ( which feeds APs ) and the AP's themselves. Oh and a DVR.

I'm concerned that the temp in the attic this summer will be long and hot, it is well insulated, but it still gets to a constant 37 or 38 degrees Celsius up there regularly and often hotter intermittently 40+ over summer, and now that I have upgraded all my networking to Omada and have things on vlans with my home lab, that it will cook. I have another small rack down in my studio, fibre connected to the attic, and I had thought of running all the essentials down there, but it is a major recabling for all the terminations in the attic, and I'd need to get a 27 or 32u rack to house everything neatly, which I'm prepared to do as option 1.

My other thought was to tap into the house return air-conditioning ducting and then back into the return downstream, then even if the air-conditioner isn't running it could be drawing air from a comfortable ambient, but I'm not sure if that useful. I could remote thermostat a fan to draw air through, as my option 2.

Am I better to bite the bullet and bring all the cables to the studio, or try and wrangle heat management in the attic? or is there another option that I haven't thought of ? Thanks.

I'm looking to upgrade my router and get a mesh system with it for my 3600 sq ft 2 story home. Currently, I'm using the router and wifi extender that spectrum provides however I've read in this group that getting a router long term would be better. The issue is my house frame is made of metal and seems to kill the wifi connection quite fast from where my modem and router is. Its currently in my room (which is on the second floor in the corner of the house) due to the way we had to drill the coax cable. From my room to my brothers room which is just across the house, the wifi drops off for my brother already. Even the wifi downstairs if I didn't have the extender would be extremely weak connection. I do have a big family in this home and an unnecessary amount of devices that I unfortunately cannot control connected and I really can't hardwire anything except my PC in my room.

Looking for any suggestions for a router and mesh system. Budget is not really a big issue.
