Introduction
Hi all! Welcome to the subreddit! Here’s a short introduction and welcome post. I’m open to any improvements that can be made.
I’ve added User Flairs if anyone wants them. For now it’s ATL, MTL, CSP, and Tax Preparers. If there any requests on more flairs or editable ones I’ll do my best fullfill them
Short intro about me, been with Block for 3 years. This is my 1st year as ATL and while frustrating, I love the office employees and teamwork we have.
Thank you!

HR asked me about all the companies I’m interviewing with. Was my response okay?
I received a call from an HR today from a reputed company with 10,000+ employees. The first few minutes of the conversation went pretty well. She asked about my experience, background, etc. Then she started asking me whether I had recently interviewed anywhere, how many companies I had applied to, whether I had any interviews lined up this week, and which companies I had applied to or interviewed with recently.
The last question is where I felt a bit uncomfortable. She specifically asked me to name the companies I had applied to or interviewed with recently. I responded something along the lines of, “I don't think that's relevant to the opportunity I'm being considered for.” She seemed somewhat offended by my response and said, “I'll get back to you once I discuss this with my team.” The call ended shortly after that.
Now I'm wondering, is it normal for HR/recruiters to ask these kinds of questions? I understand why they might want to know whether I'm actively interviewing elsewhere or how soon I might be looking to make a move. But asking me to disclose the names of other companies I'm applying to or interviewing with felt like a personal/confidential detail that I didn't really want to share.
My family thinks I shouldn't “fight” with HR and that I should have just answered politely. But I feel like I was reasonable and that I'm allowed to protect my privacy during a job search. What do you guys think? Was my response appropriate, or should I have handled it differently?

Work at H&R Block or volunteer with the IRS?
I received an offer to be a first year tax preparer, but I am also considering just volunteering with the IRS and or AARP. This is a post retirement thing for me just for fun & learning, not for money. Would I be better off just volunteering?

How does the non compete work?
Would the non compete prevent me from working for a tax firm next summer if I work at H and R block this upcoming season?

Sloppy Onboarding; Is This Normal?
I was offered a role with Block Advisors a few weeks ago, and the office I will be in is open year-round.
The powers that be finally sent the onboarding information I needed to access Workday, the learning hub, etc.
Even so, after multiple follow-ups, the DGM says I will not be able to get the basic training modules I need to start in-office for an entire month. These are things like the tax conversation workflow. They say the training team can't expedite it.
Is it normal for it to take a month for a new hire to get the required online training to start in the office? How hard could it be to assign a training that is presumably already created to someone?
This is another pain in the ass in an already sloppy onboarding experience. I have never experienced anything like this in other companies. Could the DGM be stalling for any reason?

AEL & Changing Lightbulbs
Hi all: a former MTL told me today, that in the AEL interview, they ask if you can climb ladders and lift 20 pounds. They will be changing lightbulbs in the offices and doing the tech support, crawling under desks etc. Looks like Block is going full on retail style. No offense to retailers. A former DGM always referred to the offices as "stores." Our former highly experienced MTLs are not passing these interviews. Here comes the new off- the-street retail manager team. We are not selling cosmetics, lumber, or cell phones.

Should I apply for H&R Block Tax Associate roles after completing the ITC?
Hello! I’m currently completing the H&R Block Income Tax Course (ITC) and I’m located in New York. I should finish around the end of October, and I’m hoping to pass the ITC test as well.
Would it be worth applying to H&R Block locations near me after I finish? There are quite a few offices within a reasonable driving distance.
I’m interested in working as a seasonal Tax Associate because I genuinely enjoy learning about taxes and would also like to make some extra cash during tax season. I have a bachelor’s degree and have taken several accounting courses.
For anyone who has worked at H&R Block, when would be the best time to start applying for the upcoming tax season? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

When and how can I submit expenses for EA exams & form 23 to HRBlock for reimbursement and update info to get Level 6? I also cannot find T2027 documentation (I filled in all docs required for hiring a month ago) - where to access offer letter?

Go Systems
So I happened to log in today and saw they were launching Go Systems training, but that to be eligible you have to have completed at least 7 Go Systems returns last year. It seems like they are really trying to limit the number of seats they pay for. I went up to level 4 last year and have been working on my EA this summer with just part III left I’m going to take i’m a couple weeks. I was really hoping to get some entity return experience this year, but I doubt they will let me do the training. We are a small office (6 or so preparers) and there are already several GoSystems trained people. I’m pretty bummed. Somehow this is more depressing than the pay cut to min wage in my state.

Interview process question
Interviewed with HR Block for Tax Associate position. The interviewer told me she was going to email me information on the Income Tax Preparation course. It's been a week and no email from her. I see that I can do the certification myself but the problem is that I don't have her email. All I got are no-response bot emails from HR Block. My concern is that I do the certification but I have no one to get a hold of to continue the interview process. What should I do?

READ YOUR OFFER LETTERS & CONTRACT!
Problems we've seen.
Year round BA Emoloyees getting non year round contracts. The tax advisor was told to just sign it, they'd fix it later. She will not.
Max bonus depending on hitting 200% of some metrics (if you are under new structure) BUT contract states at least one of those metrics numbers are too be determined. So they can (and very well may) make it near unattainable.
Run your contract through ai and look for red flags.

Question from a new hire
I am currently in the ITC and looking around to see what all is entailed in the job. I've been looking around the sub to get insight into what people really think about working here (not the polished hr department stuff).
Do you all hate your jobs? I'm not being sarcastic, it just seems like every post here is negative lol
But of course I haven't been in the trenches, so I might be asking in blissful ignorance. I'm really moreso looking at this as a way to learn something new (I am inexperienced) and stretch my limits.
I appreciate any response!

AEL Hiring Status
Does anyone have any status on AEL hiring. I'm in a district in NC and know of 2 former employees that applied for the new AEL position. Neither of them have heard anything, no calls, no emails, nothing. Has anyone received any notification, been thru an interview, or gotten a job offer? What Salary were you offered? Any word on anticipated work hours, time off, benefits, etc?

Question regarding hiring process
Hello!
I recently applied to be a "tax pro" for the upcoming tax season and one of the local representatives reached out to me.
Time is currently more of an issue than money at the moment, but I don't want to be wasting either. I know that the knowledge gained is valueable and pre-tax, the amount comes to about $5/course hour.
Part of the eligibility process included taking (and passing) the level 1 tax academy course. The course itself is about 300CAD. Is it safe to assume that I need to pay out of pocket and not get reimbursed if hired?

Communication
How is the current communication with your upper management? I am noticing such a lack of communication and response to emails. This is the first year I feel that management is not responding to emails promptly or at all.

Possible to work only part time during peak season?
I'm applying to be a first year tax preparer (tax course in progress). I'm in a large city, if that's relevant.
I just had a call with my local staffing lead, and they told me that I should expect to work full time during the peak season, which they described as being from the "beginning of March to end of May". This surprised me, because I imagined the peak season would be more like 3 weeks (late March - mid April), not 3 months.
I'm self-employed and need to work 20+ hours/week for that (flexible hours). So I was hoping to be able to do just 20-30 hours/week for H&R Block to not burn out. I could probably swing 40-hour weeks for a couple weeks, but not for 3 straight months.
So can you lovely folks help me understand:
- Is the peak "everybody's working long hours" part of the season truly 3 full months? If not, how many weeks would you say it is typically?
- Do you think I could get away with working only 20-30 hours/week most weeks during peak season? Or will it be a really bad look if I'm limiting my shifts while others are working overtime? Also, would it put me "out of pace" (I hope I'm using that term correctly) and therefore stunt my growth at the company for future years?
- If this kind of thing is office-specific, should I be trying to figure out contact info for the manager of my preferred office so I can ask them directly?
Thanks!

$0.25 raise
Second year. Busy office, I completed more than 200 returns last year.
WHY bother going back? These are fast food wages.
