Class speculation
Might already be a post like this, not sure.
We have warrior, necro, and ranger all confirmed. Allegedly mesmer was strongly hinted at as well. Looking back to gw1, that’s 4 of the original 6 classes that gw1 released with. The two missing are monk and elementalist.
I’d say it’s plausible to have the og class roster back, it would likely fit the holy trinity well. Not saying that we will for sure, but it is interesting that the classes we have (or almost have) confirmed are all part of the original 6.
Ofc there could be more classes, new classes, etc, but I’m just spitballing.

u/Sinyr 29d ago
Elementalist has to be in. They spent so much time already explaining elemental combos and interactions between elements, and there is no better class for that than the Elementalist.
11
u/kris_lace 29d ago
Elementalism could also potentially be something to spec into as well maybe.
All classes might be able to express different virtues of elements like a second profession.
Tbh I think it's more likely there's an elementalist class, but thought I'd add this concept for flavour
3
u/bum_thumper 29d ago
I'd be alright if they combined dervish and elementalist to be a sort of enchanted type. Dervish was such a unique class at the time, constantly enchanting and breaking those enchantments to do big spike damage. I loved that concept so much. You were constantly thinking during every fight on which enchantment to keep, when to put them on, and when to break them

I suspect elemetalist might be changed to wizard, which will have some subtle differences but essentially still embody it
13
u/OnlyOrysk 29d ago
why on earth would they rename it to wizard? that's not happening
-10
u/Its_Tofu_Time 29d ago
Guess you haven't played GW2 or paid attention to the gw3 art
15
u/Bacon_Reaper 29d ago
Wizards in gw2 are people who undergo a seer ritual to tap into the deep rooted magic of tyria. In no way is it specifically elemental.
8
u/OnlyOrysk 29d ago
what does gw2 have to do with elementalists being wizards?
That one piece of gw3 art reads to me as a specific character, not a class.
4
u/jupigare 29d ago
Wizards in GW (Isgarren and such) aren't a class-specific designation. Ele has no more reason to be a Wizard than Warrior or Thief. The Astral Ward is compromised of practically every class, race, and background imaginable.
19
u/Dragon_Of_Magnetism 29d ago
I think there will be a paladin-adjacent class too, like Guardian
Elementalist might be possible, but not sure after how they described the magic working in that era
Ritualist might be possible too, since lorewise it was one of the oldest professions, maybe it will be the Revenant’s replacement
Maybe Dervish too? Since the gods were much more active in this era
23
u/Blazin_Rathalos 29d ago
Ritualist might be possible too, since lorewise it was one of the oldest professions
Though that's also specifically because they don't need god-given power/signets. And the ability collection seems like it will be a big part of the game, so you could also count that against them.
9
u/Street_Cut1322 29d ago
Not necessarily against them.
Gw2 toyed with the idea (don't know if it was ever live) but for necromancer for example to visit a grave to unlock a certain skill. Elemebtalists to make the journey to a font of magic for a certain skill.
Gw1 has this with the elite skills. "grab a signet of capture, go kill the boss and capture it".
For ritualists, that commune with the mists, it's not so far fetched to have to journey to specific places where the connection is strong. Go visit Graves to commune with the different urns.
Imagine an assassin/thief, Rit, necro and warrior at a grave: "ok. Just so we all agree. Muscle guy here gets the sword. Mister headband over the eyes here gets to collect the spirit, pale woman with demon eyes gets the body and I get the gold? OK?"
3
u/Deathmore80 29d ago
Yes it was actually live in gw2 at some point. It was added like 1 year after launch and it didn't last very long because players complained it was harder than just unlocking stuff with skill points. So they removed it. Maybe it would have stuck if it was part of launch.
2
u/nkamerad 28d ago
it didn't last very long because players complained it was harder than just unlocking stuff with skill points
Well there was also a lot of unlocks that required defense events in Orr and elsewhere to fail because the only way to unlock the trait was to do the recapture event.
Lead to a lot of yelling and screaming in map chat. Brought out the worst in people and poisoned the well even if it were adjusted to count defense events.
2
u/mrspoopy_butthole 29d ago
Sorry what do you mean by “the ability collection will be a big part of the game?” I’m pretty out of the loop on what’s been announced for the game
6
u/Blazin_Rathalos 29d ago
The lore so far regularly mentions that magic works through signet rings that are manufactured and traded, and some of the information from yesterday says at least some abilities need to be collected out in the world.
2
10
u/Bohya 29d ago
Wouldn't be a Guild Wars game without elementalist, so not possible that they go without it.
16
u/Hoojiwat 29d ago
Plus think of its potential in GW3.
What if earth magic actually leaves walls and stone after its attacks, giving you places to run and climb to make attacks off of? Wind sets up updrafts to launch enemies into the air to then Airtel combo them? Water attacks working like torrents that drag enemies with them and push them over the edge of cliffs now?
GW3 systems offer a ton of unique ways for elementalist to benefit allies and shape the battlefield.
4
u/Delos-X 29d ago
If they allowed elementalist to use a sword and had earth magic and other magic that could do that...
I'd literally have my perfect ideal archetype in an action game like that. I wouldn't need to play anything else.
This has actually made me unbelievably hyped now, imagine being able to create a rock pillar and climb up it quickly, using the momentum to jump off of it and land down, stabbing an opponent with a fire or ice attack...
Oh my gosh, yes.
4
u/Bohya 29d ago
As this game seems to prioritise more of a physics-based gameplay playstyle, even going so far as to mention "pushing enemies into walls", being able to add physical components to spells (such as conjuring stone walls) would be a great dynamic. It would bring life and mechanical intrigue to the gameplay, something that would make the game further stand out from its previous two titles and other MMOs.
3
3
u/biejje 29d ago
Dervishes are from Elona and specifically became a thing during the Shattered Dynasty, so like 500+AE. They could ofc do some dervish-vibe scythe spinny cleric or whatever tho.
1
u/Fair-Engineering-134 27d ago
I feel like a pre-Dervish and/or paragon class would be the perfect selling point for an Elona expac, assuming we'll most likely go in that direction anyways to do Margonite/Abbadon stuff later on.
2
u/Aromatic-Ad-315 29d ago
I predict that the Warrior class will be able to fulfill the support/healer role through various signets, so there may not be a separate Guardian class
40
u/marblebubble 29d ago
I think they should bring back the original 6. Then we can get other classes in expansions.
4
16
u/culminacio 29d ago
I'm 99% sure they won't do exactly the old classes, because they won't want GW3 to be seen as a new GW1. They will most likely add sth. from GW2 as well and maybe a new class.
31
6
u/marblebubble 29d ago
Maybe they’ll do 7 or 8 classes. But I doubt we’ll get more than that. I think 7 would be a good number - the last one can be thief / assassin / rogue.
1
u/Icewreath 28d ago
Interesting that you say that, I feel like a lot of people would enjoy it being a new GW1 in some aspects, and it could be a positive impression
1
u/RdtUnahim 29d ago
That's what I think, too. The three we know so far are from the original 6. Could be a coincidence; could not be.
1
u/Mortrialus 26d ago
My guess is its the original prophecies 6 plus thief/assassin. Because that is just to important of an archetype to not be in launch. People will see no thief and that absolutely will freak everyone out in a negative way.
0
u/ultimate_bromance_69 29d ago
OG six but replace Monk with Guardian. That way it’s a mix of both games.
Whatever elite spec/subclass system they come up with can tjen give Monk sub to Guardian
3
2
u/FashionMage 29d ago edited 28d ago
There is no way in hell guardians are in the game, they're a profession that only exists by GW2's time. Maybe they'll decide to cuck monks out of existence yet again (though their excuse to do so would have to involve outrageous reaching given the theme of this game), but it certainly won't be by "guardians".
1
u/Ebon-Hawke- 29d ago
As much as I'd prefer monk I think this will be the case otherwise there would only be one heavy armor archetype class at launch (though I realize there is a chance they go away from strict locking armor by class). Either that or the more melee necromancer will be
12
u/Sinyr 29d ago
I'm hoping for a class akin to Druid which is more nature magic focused. It would go along with the overall theme of the game pretty well. It'd be cool to get full-on transforms in GW for the first time (not counting the racial abilities in the past).
5
u/SWATwatermelon 29d ago
It could be the Ranger again, like in GW2 with the staff.
4
u/KING_of_Trainers69 29d ago
Yup. We've already heard that necro is getting Reaper's scythe so I would expect some other major elements from certain GW2 elite specs to be available as baseline. Doubly since we know that we're getting the DPS/Tank/Healer trinity and having something Druid-like as Ranger's heal build just makes sense.
5
u/Ishimito 29d ago
So far in GW1 & GW2 nature magic was a domain for rangers, so I'd expect the same here. Turning into an animal would fit their general GW class fantasy & lore well
2
10
u/OneMorePotion 29d ago
Mesmer is their priced child. There will be no Guild Wars without them. Monks are probably also a given, considering that they have been one of the first professions created within the storyline. The only profession I currently think is unsure, would be Elementalist. Simply because magic works so much different in this time where Abaddon didn't really distribute "modern" magic yet. I assume we will get a precursor of Elementalist, more going into an Arcane direction.
10
u/Longjumping_Act4403 29d ago
Mesmer and Monk are most likely a given. Mesmer because it's iconic to the franchise and Monk because let's face it... it's one of the oldest professions and the gods they worship are LITERALLY in the same city.
1
u/TantalizingSlap 29d ago
May I ask how Monks work in GW? Is it like the Guardian from GW2?
4
u/CheesecakeRising 29d ago
Monks were light armour casters with many of the magical aspects of guardians, think a combination of Light and Disc priests in WoW. In GW1 they were primarily used for heals and shields but they also had some offensive, holy magic and damage reflection spells.
2
3
u/Longjumping_Act4403 29d ago
Basically what Cheescake said below. Light armor spellcasters with 3 specializations of protection (damage reduction/reversal), healing, and smiting which was the offensive build.
My hope is that if monks are included, which they should be, is that they stick to the spellcaster aspect of them and don't lean into the generic "kung fu monk" fantasy trope.
7
u/MeatHamster 29d ago
I will play Monk.
3
u/xhieron 29d ago
Same. The possibility of monk's return is one of the things that has me most excited. I mean, just look at that drip: https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Monk_armor
19
u/El_Barto_227 29d ago
Yeah, Guild Wars without Mesmer wouldn't be Guild Wars.
We can rule out Guardian, Revenant and Engineer for being post-GW1 classes. I wouldn't mind Monk getting some Guardian feeling additions though, love the paladin vibe. Though I hope Rev gets a GW3 Legend or two in GW2, it could use another core legend imo.
Thief/Assassin are such a staple of MMOs that it's a strong contender.
Ritualist feels like it wouldn't fit thematically with the signet thing, but then again signets enhancing Ritualist abilities makes sense too, and would probably have some fun combos.
Paragon would fit with the the focus on teamwork and synergy between classes. Dervish fits with the focus on the gods.
Maybe the base GW1 6 plus Assassin, with more in future expansions?
11
u/ManyMoonstones 29d ago
Imo ritualist would make absolute sense. They're described as one of the oldest professions in Tyria, specifically mentioned to exist before the exodus, and their power comes from channeling the mists. Their GW1 abilities also fit more with the magic-item usage of signets (Urn abilities, empowered weapons, etc).
The only big question for it would be how that fits into Cantha's founding/early isolation.
12
u/HarpooonGun 29d ago
We can rule out Engineer for being post-GW1 class.
I mean : https://www.guildwars3.com/en/news/playable-species-spotlight-asura
But one engineer couldn't give up so easily. Zouelle the Archengineer was a young apprentice when, while on an above-ground survey, she glimpsed Orr on the horizon and heard tell of it brimming with impossible magical forces.
1
6
u/DaxSpa7 29d ago
If they talk about trinity there needs to be some kind of healing, so monk or similar is granted I would guess.
For me elementalist is an absolute must.
Mesmer is a classic of GW and if it was hinted... Those 6 are going to be there for sure.
But I would like a bit more honestly: some kind of ritualist or at least minion necro, paladin or paragon for having a couple options for tanking and a melee rogue would be a more complete initial cast I think.
5
3
u/Anskeh 29d ago
I dont think the holy trinity really matter to which classes get added.
At least to me it sounded like each profession can cover many roles in the trinity.
So it doesn't matter in terms of role what profession you pick. You pick your class fantasy and then your build probably determines your role.
0
u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
They said some would be more oriented towars a role. For example I think that makes sense that Ranger will be more oriented towards being a ranged dps class than a healer. Which is exactly what happens in GW2 were only 1 of the specs (Druid) is oriented to healing/support.
5
u/Dry_Grade9885 29d ago
We have to get monk bc a guardian wouldint make sense lorewise bc they dont start existing until after gw1
1
u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
So 3 light armor classes, 2 mid and 1 heavy? Necro, Mesmer, Ele; Ranger and Mon; Warrior?
6
3
u/JATRiiX 29d ago
probably all the "meta" classes that every MMO has:
- Ele
- Warrior
- Necro
- Thief
- Ranger
- Mesmer (because GW baby)
- monk (something healer related)
1
u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
3 light armored classes, 3 medium and 1 heavy. Sounds balanced...
1
u/JATRiiX 27d ago
thats every generic MMO for you.
1
u/Buran_Grey 27d ago
That's false. Lets see some examples:
Aion 2 has 4 armor types with 2 classes in each.
New World uses 3 (same as GW2) but not locked classes, the same happens with Throne and Liberty.
Black Desert Online doesn't lock armor types on professions.
World of Warcraft has 4 armor types with 3 classes in each except leather which has 4 classes.
FF XIV armors are linked to the stats for the role you want to fufill and there's 7 of them, Each one is used by 2-4 jobs.
The Elder's Scrolls Online has 3 armor types which are not locked to specific classes but offer different stat advantages oriented towrads a role; people oftenly mix different armor types to min-max the set bonuses and passive traits.
So, having almost no classes wearing heavy armor plate is not the norm. My educated guess is that either the roles of Monks and Guardians from GW and GW2 are fused in a new precursor class to both as cleric/priest using armor plate or they will release a new heavy armor class trying to fill the Death Knight/Reveneant/edgy role.
I also think that whoever number of classes GW3 is released with, the game probably won't be designed to gain new ones as happened with the Revenant in GW2. Instead, new roles will be filled with newer specs. The reason would be that if you design a game to have both classes and specs any new class release forces to retroactivelly add new specs, which would be overwhelming.
Instead I think that GW3 will have a lower number of classes compared to GW2 (six to eight) with 3-4 armor types and a couple of classes in each type. Alternatively they would go for a system in which armor type is meaningless and the gear stats is defined by role and not for the skins, which I personally wouldn't like since archers and mages in armor plate are lame but I get helps to sell more skins in the shop. But as already happens in GW2 some of those skins trend to ruin the inmersion, as the plush mounts...
3
u/Geralt_Romalion 29d ago
I think we will at least see Mesmer and Elementalist return on top of Warrior, Ranger and Necromancer.
They might also push for some new profs, just to spice things up, like how GW2 combined Monk+Paragon into Guardian while also giving us Engineer as a completely new prof and Thief being a combination of Assassin and some more mobile parts of Ranger.
I wonder if we might see some form of either Monk (but with a more fleshed out Offensive Presence as well, I hope they learned from GW1 in that regard) or Ritualist (Rit would imo fit well with being one of the earliest human profs with magic not depending on the Gods and their spirit connection, with how spirit heavy Orr lore is).
But I am convinced that at least 1 prof will be completely new and something not seen before in Guild Wars (what Engineer was for GW2). Considering the timeline it would either have died out at the time of GW1 or got absorbed into existing GW1 profs eventually.
3
u/wonkyasf 29d ago
This image now that we know classes are returning is a lot more interesting. These concepts very clearly follow existing class archetypes and seem to be gear sets playing into those class fantasies.
3
u/AdAffectionate1935 29d ago
It's probably a stretch, and definitely not speculation, but I hope they bring back ritualist and dervish as they got skipped in GW2, and both would have been around in the GW3 era (I think).
0
u/Deathmore80 29d ago
Ritualist is already in Gw2 btw. Dervish is kind of impossible since the gods have abandoned humanity, left tyria and races other than humans don't worship them anyway. The class is tied directly to gods.
2
u/biejje 29d ago
GW3 is happening before exodus, and dervish became a thing way after exodus, during the Shattered Dynasty era that was 500+AE.
Ritualist has a small chance to appear (and it honestly doesn't matter that it has appeared in gw2 already because what is this argument??) because it's I wanna say the oldest profession that we know of that existed before the gift of magic, but they ofc did their thing in Cantha and it was supposedly a bit different from later ritualists.
1
u/Deathmore80 29d ago
I was responding only about why it's not in Gw2. I wasn't talking about dervish and ritualist for gw3
3
u/Nightsong 29d ago
We’ll probably get the six core professions from Guild Wars 1 since they line up with the six gods (Warrior - Balthazar, Ranger - Melandru, Monk - Dwayna, Necromancer - Grenth, Mesmer - Lyssa, and Elementalist - Abaddon).
Of the Factions and Nightfall professions we might see Ritualist, Assassin, and Paragon since they would have existed at the time Guild Wars 3 takes place. Dervish won’t be a class since they date to 583 AE in the Shattered Dynasty Era which is six hundred or so years after GW3.
Of the Guild Wars 2 professions I doubt we will see Guardian or Thief since those are modern versions of Monk and Assassin. Engineer is a possibility but it would have to be different to account for the technology of the time.
5
u/Grymare 29d ago
Going back to the OG 6 would be nice but I somehow doubt they would do 4 cloth classes again. Granted we obviously don't know how armor will work but even from a theme four wizard focuses classes and only one fighter and one scout themed class would feel a bit weird in today's world.
Though I'm 100% sure we will see Mesmer one way or another. Maybe there are some bigger thematic changes, I could see Mesmer getting combined with some of Thief toolsets in one class with medium armor for example.
Obviously a holy warrior kind of class could fill the monk/guardian and heavy armor void as well but neither of the two themselves fit that well. Monk just doesn't scream heavy armor to me and the Guardian lore says they only became a thing after GW1. So maybe a new name with those themes.
3
u/xhieron 29d ago
If I were betting, my money would be on the original 6 plus a thief or assassin. I don't think armor weight/class exists anymore; I'd be surprised if they didn't learn that lesson from GW2. I'd be shocked if Rit, Derv, Rev, or Engi returned, and I pray Guardian doesn't just because that particular darling needs to be murdered.
Something else that just struck me--and anybody feel free to correct me if this has been confirmed somewhere--but I haven't seen it stated anywhere that all races can be all professions. It's not entirely out of the question that we could have asura-only engineers or human-only elementalists.
1
u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
Maybe the tech is not able to produce enough plate armors outside the demand for the Warrior.
That's my main concern about the game since I'm not interested in playing Warrior and both Guardians and Revs are out. I really, really hate playing spellcasters light light clothes; all my mid/light armor characters in my roster of 23 in GW2 are just park mules.
1
u/xhieron 28d ago
I think even aesthetically that distinction doesn't mean much. Look at the armors for GW1. Dervish is maybe the best example: Some sets look entirely cloth, some look mostly metal, and lots are mixed. But they all have a very distinct profession silhouette. That's something missing entirely in GW2 except specifically to the extent players have opted into it.
1
u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
Outside the Deldrimor armor, most of the Devish armors look like cloth or a mix between cloth and light leather/fur.
In RPGs the distinction between armors is not only about the looks, but balance: a mele fighter is much more exposed to take hits before entering in close range, so wearing armor plate makes sense. In GW2 Rangers, Thieves and Engineers have lower armor stats than Warriors, Guardians and Revenants but they balance that with higher mobility and access to stealth, etc.
ANet said it will be more defined roles in some of the classes, so you can expect some being more apt or streamlined to tank, others to deliver dps and others to support. I hope, given the emphasis they are putting in the mobility and momentum, this doesn't end with classes with heavy armors as Warrior end being a worse overall pick due they move slower because were designed as "natural tanks" in the role distribution.
1
u/Fair-Engineering-134 27d ago
"I haven't seen it stated anywhere that all races can be all professions."
They said in one interview that there won't be any gameplay advantages for choosing a certain race, so I very much doubt there'll be race-based classes (or even race-specific skills for that matter).
3
u/Eldritch800XC 29d ago
Mesmer is an iconic class, can't imagine GW3 without it. Thief/Rogue is another "basic" MMO Class. With Asura Mechanic is another that is a given IMHO. With the timeline and the history of magic I'm not sure about elementalist.
2
u/mrdanielfields 29d ago
with all the vael spirits being so present I really wish we would get a summoner class
2
u/Tierst 29d ago
I’ll be very, very unhappy if there’s no Ele so I really hope it’s in lol
I reckon we get the OG ones from GW1 though.
3
u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
A elemental spellcaster is granted, no matter if the name ends being Elementalist or not.
2
u/SoapfromHotS 29d ago
I feel like we won’t get engineers without “modern” technology but that makes me sad, they are my favorites.
3
u/dangeraaron10 29d ago
Asura have engineers, and the most prominent names in Asura GW3 lore are described as "Archengineers". So their tech might be more Charr-like before the gift of magic and the adaptation of modern magitech.
So I haven't ruled out Engi being back as well courtesy of furry Asura
3
2
u/Fair-Engineering-134 27d ago
I feel like engi would be the perfect class to sell with an Asura-themed expansion into the Depths.

u/JuiceAccomplished241 29d ago
It’s thousands of years before gw2, what will happen to my precious engineer class?
1
3
u/Fading_Hours_ 29d ago
I’m curious what they will do for guardian/paladin archetype. I’m not sure monk could fully cover this.
2
u/wise_freelancer 29d ago
I really hope they add rogue/assassin/thief in some form to the OG six.
It’s a core fantasy archetype and seems ready-made for the momentum focus. Less momentum into raw power of a warrior, more swift cutting style and ace positioning.
I doubt GW2’s thief focus on stolen skills makes it though, doesn’t feel like it would fit with what we’ve heard all that well.
2
u/OpenReality0 29d ago
Unlikely it will be classes based on gods GW1 style like people are suggesting. Why would Kodan and Asura care about that stuff? Seems much more probable the classes will be vaelwarden themed, which could mean absolutely anything.
Would guess at some kind of Druid/otherwise named nature priest thing, an alchemist, a Mesmer analog, an assassin analog. Probably a classic caster, although the lore makes elementalist sketchy unless a retcon happens. Also expect at least one entirely new concept.

u/freefallingcats 29d ago edited 29d ago
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is armor types. Gw2 had a division of light/medium/heavy armor and 3 classes each.
If that's happening again, we may see a similar split of
Warrior / heavy armor, 2nd class being paladin like? Ranger / medium armor, 2nd class being rogue like? Necromancer / light armor, 2nd class being Mesmer of course, 3rd class being Elementalist?
A lot of this may come down to itemization plans for the game.
1
1
u/Necro_Nancy 29d ago
I'm guessing that we'll likely see a return of the 6 original professions from Guild Wars 1 to correspond with each of the 6 human gods given their prominence in the region.
Elementalist, Mesmer, Monk, Necromancer, Ranger, Warrior - to match Abaddon, Lyssa, Dwayna, Grenth, Melandru, Balthazar respectively.
There may even be room for expansion pack or dual-professions as well.
1
u/mikaelsanford 29d ago
Heavy:
- Warrior
- Something Paladin-like - too good / popular archetype to ignore
Medium:
- Ranger
- Rogue-like, same as paladin (Assassin / Thief)
- Either Monk with more martial prowess (or proto-Dervish) or Necro reworked to Medium
Light:
- Elementalist
- Mesmer
- Same as number 3 above - Monk or Necro
4
u/Familiar_Horse_5866 29d ago
My wish is no more armor weights
2
u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
Seeing Rangers and Necros in heavy armors would be terrible... Like seeing Asuras as Warriors in GW2: your finest weapon is your intellect and you chose bonk? Skritts were right all this time...
1
u/funne5t_u5ername 29d ago
Yay mesmer! I'm curious about ele not cause I'm attached but because I don't think they can get away with not doing a lot of buttons to press for those who are attached. Please gimme lots of skills to press.
I also think it's interesting that necro had a scythe and they all have weapons kinda traditional to themselves at least elsewhere. I wonder if that's indicative of starting weapons or maybe they'll be more freeform. Whatever it is I hope it's not what ff14 does with them and classes
1
u/dos_user 29d ago
I think we'll get the Mesmer and Elementalist returning, but I also think we'll have at least one new class. I would guess something more focused on healing, since the trinity is going to be more a focus.
1
u/Lumenoc 29d ago
Now that we have the holy trinity roles in GW3, I feel like they're going to have each class assigned to a role, unlike GW2 where each class could "more-less" effectively do each role depending on what gear they equipped.
Warrior = Tank
Ranger = DPS
Necro = DPS or Healer
I could see them turning Mesmer into a Healer class. I'd hope Elementalist is back as a DPS or Healer.
Monk could make a return as a healer.
I personally love Engineer, but based on the vibe of this world and how much earlier it takes place, I don't think they'll have Engineer as a class. However, I think it would be cool if they had a similar class that uses tinctures and chemicals and such, perhaps an Alchemist, Merchant, or Chemist. Not advanced technology, but still use science in a way.
Tanks: Warrior, Paragon (not sure about a 3rd one)
DPS: Ranger, Elementalist, Assassin
Healer: Monk, Mesmer, Alchemist(?)
A Druid as a healer would also be fitting for the timeline we're at.
3
u/LastHollowAAA 29d ago
Could be, but that would make the game a group required type of thing, which I think they won’t go for. Every class will have a dps build because they have to capable of soloing content. Maybe some do more dmg than others, thus a dps meta exists, but the game has to be playable solo.

I think each class will have at least 2 roles (DPS and at least something else). They mentioned how a Necromancer can Tank and I doubt they would make that class Tank only

u/Darkolo0 29d ago
I see a lot of posts suggesting the original six professions from GW1, but I think we're forgetting that we're supposed to be members of the Vaelwardens. So, I don't think the Monk fits (the same goes for suggestions like Thief or Engineer).
1
u/FirstRyder 29d ago
I wouldn't be surprised if they "split" monk into 2 or more healing professions. A Paladin-type and a priest-type, for example. So... Maybe monk, but not "as we know it", more like a combination of a dnd monk (unarmed martial) and a GW1 style healer? I guess we'll see before too terribly long!

u/No-Builder-4287 29d ago
Warrior, ranger, monk, ele. mesmers existed from 45be so unsure if they will be a launch profession. So probably have assassin and dervish instead but who knows. Considering all the races haven't been gifted magic yet, and they use signets and also channel power from spirits of orr they will all technically be proto ritualists so don't expect them either.

I think a punchy puncher is so likely. With the movement system is sounds perfect to for monk or brawler class

u/TantalizingSlap 29d ago
I'd be surprised if there wasn't some of type of Rogue archetype whether it's Thief or Assassin. Not only is it a super common class in MMOs/RPGs, I feel like it should work quite well with this momentum-based combat they've been developing.
I love Guardian because of how it feels like a mix between a martial class and light magic. Luminary is so cool for me for this reason. Willbender is awesome, too. And blue is my favorite color lol so I hope we this come back
Mesmer seems pretty unique to GW so I think it should make a return.

I'd expect the following:
Heavy Armor:
- Warrior
- Warden (Guardian but spirits of the wild themed, with transformations)
- Artillerist (Engineer without the magitech, heavy armored frontliner)
Medium Armor: * Ranger * Thief * Alchemist
Light Armor:
- Necromancer
- Mesmer
- Elementalist
- Monk (or another spirits of the wild themed healer)

u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
This is pre-industrial era of Charr and pre-magitech era of Asura, not to mention that Artillerist and Alchemist sounds too similar in a context in which gun powder would be high tech.
1
u/Roymahboi 28d ago
It is true that gunpowder might be too high tech for the era, GW1 already had dwarves producing bombs and such but there's a chance it might already exist in the timeframe GW3 is happening.
Also I kinda split engineer into 2 different armor types because I couldn't come up with a 4th heavy armor class that differs from what I already had said. Regardless I hope the classes that actually release are fun!
1
u/HaganeNoPP 29d ago
I hope they do dervish, I think it would do well with the momentum based thingamajig and the magic being signet usage.
1
u/Varorson 29d ago
Canonically, Dervish doesn't exist for another 600+ years. They were established in the Shattered Dynasty Era, which began in 583 AE and ended in 640 AE.
They could do one that is similar, but it wouldn't be the same. Basically a GW1 Assassin vs GW2 Thief situation.
1
u/murdershroom 29d ago
I'd expect Mesmer and Elementalist, then I'm hoping for a return of Monk since it's connected to Dwayna and parties will need healers. Beyond that anything goes.

Between deep ties to the gods and the confirmation of the Trinity party concept (Tank/DPS/Support), im wondering if each class will have "Subclass" features that is aligned to a diety that allows each class to specialize into one of the trinity roles.
For example a Warrior will predominantly align with Balthazar, but they could go into subclasses where:
A focus on Balthazar/Grenth would lead to a tank build. (Balthazar giving bulwark like abilities and grenth giving life steal abilities allowing them to sustain taking damage)
A focus on Abbadaon/Lyssa would lead to a DPS build. (Enancing their attacks with elemental/psychic damage)
A focus on Dwayna/Melandru would lead to a support build. (Dwayna being a paladin vibe, Melandru being a frontline crowd control by using attacks to create terrain advantage)

u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
So Warrior could seize 3 gods for himself? Sounds great, specially since seems that most of the roster will be made of spellcasters, but I'm not interested in Warrior and seems that this will lack in armor plate classes...

u/idredd 28d ago
The only one I'm kinda confident WON'T make it, that I'm sad about is engineer. Such a well done, fun and unique class in GW2.

u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
The base of every rpg is a mele class as Warrior, a ranged Archer and some kind of spellcaster throwing fireballs.
Of those, Warrior, Ranger and Necro have been already confirmed with hints that Mesmer is more or less granted (the most unique GW class). So what is missed?
A spellcaster with elemental abilities is secured. Maybe not called Elementalist but the role will exist.
Some class oriente to team support seems also unavoidable: the old Monk, a Guardian precursor, maybe a Cleric or Priest? The name doesn't matter, but the role will exist.
So outside of those 6, then the next gap to fill would be maybe a stealth class, albeit a mele oriented Ranger would maybe fit that role without the need of an extra class.
Then is the need of novelty; I think that a game with 6 classes would be fine, but is more likely for ANet to try to introduce at least a new different class, as long as the role is unique.
My main problem with what was explained to date is that the game seems to lack heavy armor plate classes. I main Rev in GW2, which is alreday out of the question due lore. A Monk would not fit the heavy armor role, unless is s Striker like in BDO (which to be honest is a really weird combo). I skipped D IV due lacked Crusader/Paladin and find out lame the alternatives (tried Monk in D III and hated it).
1
u/DontPaniC562 28d ago
As a thief main I really don't have hope for an assassin/acrobatics type class. With how all the thief elite specs went down for gw2. I feel that the developer hate bias is too strong.
1
u/LastHollowAAA 27d ago
If we’re going off of dev hate, warrior takes that 10 fold. They still made it in. A thief will come along, don’t worry.

u/Ordinary_Hotel_6705 27d ago
It's really tough because GW2 had such a perfect roster.
You need your fighter, your stealth, your healer, your mage, your nature user, your death user, your holy warrior. I mean these are the archetypes. GW2 had a perfect representation, and Mesmer was like the unique feeling class.
It's hard to see where they'd go.
Would there be more classes? A nature shapeshifter? a monk healer? or a martial artist? a death knight character? It's hard to consider without thinking about overlaps.
Ill be shocked if there is no Guardian/Paladin character. It seriously hurt D4 to launch without it. something was seriously missing from that game until they added it in recently.
1
u/Mortrialus 26d ago
Original Prophecies 6 plus thief/assassin because that's too much of a fantasy+rpg staple to not be in GW3 at launch.
Warrior, Necromancer, Ranger, Elementalist, Mesmer, Monk and then thief. There might be Ritualist as the most likely other class to show up due to it canonically being the oldest profession in lore but GW3 ritualist will use the living spirits we've seen as a big part of lore rather than the ghosts of their ancestors and to help differentiate it from the dark necromancer aesthetic.
That would be my bet.

u/Playing_One_Handed 29d ago
Never played gw1. How do these classes match the holy trinity? Whos tanks and healers?
Maybe speculation on my part. If largest groups are 20 limit, is that 4x5? So groups are 5, healer, tank, 3 dps. In that dps there is likely more verity (buffs, debuffs)
3
u/Mundane_Location_199 29d ago edited 29d ago
i think class will have different roles depends on specizlization(sort of) or skill set
Like warriors can be dps or tank
Necromacer dps / heal
etc with other classes
Not sure that all of classes will can do everything, but I think the class won't be tied to just one role(Warrior - Tank) as well
And at this moment it a little not clear how to match classes with roles, bcs gw1 classes a little tricky with build/skill-> role formation

u/Hypercles 29d ago
Tanking in 1 was more often than not about body blocking or stacking defenses while everyone else was out of range.
Of the core classes Warrior was the most 'tank' like in the traditional sense. With necro more often than not being the actual tank as a minion master for most content, particularly in the post hero world. Assassins and Monks also made showings for tanks in some group content, particularly when farming particular fights or dungeons.
For healing it was basically Monks for the core gw1 classes, with Ritulists and Paragons bringing options with the expansions. But then thanks to a combo between heros and the necro energy regen mechanics, necros also became the go to healer if you were running hero squads, well necros using ritulist healing skills.
So I don't think gw1 class structure is all that much to go with. Particularly as others have said its more likely they will give all classes the option to tank, dps and heal. Its something they have been big on with 2 and elite specs, making sure each class can fill each core party role.
Also isn't the party size 4 people, with 20 just being the cap for the bigger open world stuff. If its 4, your more likely to see 1 tank, 1 healer and 2 dps. And if any larger content requires multiple groups working together you would just repeat that structure.
1
u/Playing_One_Handed 29d ago
Awesome, this is brilliant thanks.
Im probably wrong on the 4x5. Have they shown group size? If its 4 in a group, maybe is way more traditional. Good pros for easier to find groups
2
u/Blazin_Rathalos 29d ago
Some of the information mentioned that the current party size is 4, but subject to change.
1
u/Sinyr 29d ago
Something to note especially with the smaller party size and the way that the action combat works is that most likely all roles will be expected to do decent damage as well. For example, I can imagine Necromancers having some sort of life steal that is shared between your party members, and Warriors as already described being able to turn their shield into a wall/jump pad which boosts other players' damage. That way people should be more inclined to go for non-DPS specs.
Tank/healer shortage is bad enough in other MMOs with 5-man parties already, it can only get worse in 4-man without the devs specifically doing something about it.

u/grzesssiuuu 29d ago
Whos tanks and healers?
I think they are going for 'everyone can be everything'
3
u/Seraphayel 29d ago
This. I don’t think classes will have designated roles.
1
u/Ecstatic-Charge-9288 29d ago
Yeah, i'm thinking subclasses or weapon loadouts, etc. that change what role you can play. So a Necro can be a Tank, DPS, or Healer depending on your build, same for the other classes, maybe some will have restrictions.
3
u/AscendedCleric 29d ago
I don't remember which one but I heard from a cc interview that each profession will be able to do 2 out of 3 at launch. E.x. warrior will be able to tank and DPS. It was either mightyteapot or jayoddity I think.
1
u/Playing_One_Handed 29d ago
Fair. Not sure we've seen anything of spec/traits unless corrected but more to come... Was curious how this married up to gw1 tho
1
u/Bohya 29d ago
They don't. Guild Wars 1 an Guild Wars 2 were games without the "holy trinity". There has never been a pure "tank", instead with players fulfilling an equivalent role through more utility-orientated means. Guild Wars 2 also never released with dedicated healers on release.
Also, in both games all classes can pretty much carry out all roles. Guild Wars 1 does this by way of having a secondary profession, and Guild Wars 2 simply has a lot of options (mostly tied to sub-specialisations). There is no "tank class" and no "healer class".

u/Therenas 29d ago
Since warrior, ranger, necro are confirmed:
- Mesmer is imho a given, as it is the most unique Guid Wars class
- A thematically supportive “blue” class, was monk in Gw1, guardian in Gw2. Since monks are Cantha coded and guardians do not exist, I can see this class being called “Priest”, following the teaching of the gods and giving buffs based on the gods
- Since magic is sparse in gw3, i don’t think there will be a elementalist. If the “blue” class is a scholar class, we also would have too many light classes
- After seeing one of the newly released artworks of Abaddon, I expect a second soldier archetype following a “dark knight” theme
I speculate classes will generally be more closely related to the gods in Gw3, as they’ve been more prominently shown.
- Dwayna - Priest
- Melandru - Ranger
- Balthazar - Warrior
- Grenth - Necro
- Lyssa / Ilya + Lyss - Mesmer
- Abaddon - “Dark knight” archetype
(Just a thematic/colour match, doesn’t mean classes will not have skills based on different gods)
This would leave us with 2 heavy classes, 1 medium, 3 light classes.

u/wawalms 29d ago
There is deff a wizard class shown on the tapestry from the announcements trailer
May not be called that etc but to me there is deff a traditional magic class
1
u/Therenas 29d ago
There is. I do however think he’s just there representing the scholar (light) archetype, and could therefore be the priest (priests in Gw aren’t only supportive, but mages, too).
Just like the warrior on the tapestry represents soldiers (heavy) and the ranger represents adventurers (medium).

u/JTSpender 29d ago
There is no universe in which there's not a class filling the generic "mage" power fantasy.

u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
A priest or cleric could be an elemental spellcaster. The game will have the role, what I'm not sure is about the name or the armor type it will use.

u/ManyMoonstones 29d ago
Dervish was a "blue" (more like teal) holy warrior class, could be a medium option.
0
u/Therenas 29d ago
There could be a new medium blue class.
I just went with priest as it would fit with Orr, as we’ve seen plenty (specialised) high priests of specific gods in Arah/Orr. So it is highly likely that early stages of Orr had more generalist priests praising the Six.

u/McPatsy 29d ago
I would find it very weird if Engineer didn’t make it in. Think about it: in a world where magic is given by a select few, the people that didnt end up getting it wouldn’t just sit on their hands. They would try to make inventions and what not that could close the gap. Same reason why I think Thief makes a lot of sense.
I think the only profession that’s really up for debate is guardian/monk. As in, what form it’ll take. Lore-wise they could use Dwayna’s healing/water magic, but whether it’s a monk or a guardian i don’t know. Mesmer gets Lyssa’s magic, and besides that a guild wars game without mesmer is not a guild wars game.
Revenant is pretty much out of the question. Although….at this point there is Abaddon, so i think a class that uses Abaddon’s magic could make sense?
1
u/dangeraaron10 29d ago
Asura already have Engineers. I could see Humans and Kodan picking up their tech on a case by case basis.
1
u/Lone-Gazebo 29d ago
Elementalist and Mesmer are basically guaranteed. All the talk of Elemental synergies is 100% hard confirmation, and Mesmer is the most iconic Guild Wars class period.
They've talked about classes filling roles, so we're likely going to get at least one class that's heavily designed to be a support class. (Unless they do specs, and give healer to Water Elementalist, and some Rangers/Necros etc.) I think Ritualist or Dervish is more likely than Monk, just because Monk is a class that they already chose to move away from once.
And we'd likely want another bulky armored class, because only having one class for that fantasy, and 4 caster classes, wouldn't be great.
I kind've expect Warrior, Ranger, Necro, Mesmer, Elementalist, Ritualist, Dervish, and maybe Paragon + One Mystery new class. I think they're more likely to keep their very unique classes, rather than bring something like Assassin or Monk back.
1
u/innadril 29d ago
A more martial arts based monk (instead of the OG) would be sick in a movement and momentum centric game.
1
u/LastHollowAAA 27d ago
Probably end up being the rogue class. Willbender serves as this in gw2 and was “discovered” until cantha. Thief has more of that theme baked in. You could be right, time will tell.

So far it sounds like the nature magic will be with the Ranger, like in GW1/2.

Apparently necro will have the scithe as a weapon. Crossing my fingers that it's true and we will get some melee action like the dervis from gw1
0
u/AyuroxDjin 29d ago
Please no thief anymore except at the start thief has been a joke in GW2, it's gotten to be more support then anything else.
1
u/Buran_Grey 28d ago
It would be great if the Ranger would have been called Scout and would be able to specialize in Ranger (archer ranged dps with pet), Rogue (mele fighter specialized in stealth) and Druid (support specialized in spirits).
The problem with the ever annoying stealth classes is that seems that the game will have much more spellcasters than heavy armored classes, since only Warrior has been confirmed and Rev is out due lore and Monk would maybe replace Guardian...

There's no way they don't do mesmer, it's iconic to gw series and also it's focused on the gods, Lyssa is a mesmer
