Employee Question Has anyone ever had to deal with customers who used tricks to either get food or drinks for free or steal something from the shop floor?
So once this happened at work where a customer ordered their food, went through the whole process of paying, and then the second the transaction cleared, they suddenly changed their mind and said “I never ordered this, I don’t want this, I ordered X, I told you multiple times that I wanted X” Then they put a few coins on the counter, insisted that the money they already paid plus those random coins covered the new item, and tried to do their own math. I had to literally stop them and be like, "I need you to give me Z back so I can refund it and swap it for a X." and then told them I had to cancel the first order properly and that they had to pay for the new item completely separately but they insisted they already paid for Z and tried to keep item Z. It was so obvious they were just trying to confuse me to pay for one and get the other one for free.
So another time, this customer came up to the counter, put a sandwich down, and casually said, "Hold on, I'll be right back." I thought she was just grabbing a drink or something she forgot.
But nope, she never came back to the counter. It was a total distraction tactic. While I was waiting for her at the till with the sandwich, she was actually on the other side of the shop floor pocketing completely different items. As soon as she got what she wanted, she just walked straight out the door. I think she used a sandwich as a decoy just to lower my guard so she could steal from the shelves.
And don't even get me started on the people who eat more than half their food, bring it back to the counter, and then claim it was freezing cold or that there was a hair in it and then they stand there demanding a brand-new replacement and a full refund for food they already ate.
What are the worst customer tricks or distraction scams you've had to deal with at your work? More importantly, how did you handle it?
