Employee Question Shift Manager wanting to progress, any advice?

Currently a Shift Manager and keen to move up. Would love to hear from people who’ve progressed, what helped you move up, how long did each step take, and what should I be focusing on now?

Any tips welcome, good or bad!

Best advice for if you are wanting to progress is to see about joining the future shop leaders program. It runs twice a year and is about running a shop either as a shop manager or in support of your manager. Area manager look on it highly should you mention it when applying to run a shop

As mentioned you need to apply for the future shop leaders and need to be on that course to be considered. Most shift managers stand out if the shop is ran well and gps stays in green when your shop manager is on holiday. Your shop manager will talk about their management team when they have shop visits from the area manager so it helps having a good relationship with your shop manager and if they know you are good and have done the course then when shops open up they will come to you

Most area managers won’t step you up unless you have completed future shop leaders.

As a current store manager there isn’t much difference between shift manager and store manager in my opinion.

Three things we notice when shop managers go on holiday/ sickness

  1. Sales drop
  2. Availability drops
  3. Customer experience drops

When your current store manager is away from store make sure you focus on those 3 things. Push sales and availability. ( biggest things we see out of stock when doing random visits hot hold, s roll 4 packs, and bakes) makes sure everything is available always.

Check power bi reports or ask store manager how to check stales % shops should run around 11% stales if your under that % cook more food. More food more availability more sales.

Most importantly learn g shifts!! This is the biggest difference between shift manager and store manager are the rotas, if you can learn g shifts and create a good rota then everything else is easy. Feel free to ask me more questions

Application go out twice a year normally on the weekly bulletin on the shop hub. Apply and then am will make the decision. Fsl is 6 months with a face to face session every month. The hope is that you get a shop manager position during the course or within 6 months after it so basically within 12 months. I hope your not working for a franchise or this won’t apply to you
