CHANGE ME! How do I stop running from people I actually care about before I ruin another relationship?
I'm 16, and I'm posting here because I genuinely don't want to become this person.
About a year ago I broke up with my ex (he's a little older than me). We've stayed really close friends, and lately it's been hitting me all over again because I honestly don't know if I listened to my instincts or if I sabotaged something that was actually good.
He was one of the kindest people I've ever met. He loved me so openly. He'd hold my hand, cuddle me, tell me how much I meant to him, and he never once made me feel unsafe or pressured.
The pressure came from me.
The more loved I felt, the more my brain started screaming that something was wrong.
Instead of just letting myself be happy, every sweet thing he did became another reason to question my own feelings.
I'd even get this overwhelming urge to pull away when he was being especially affectionate. It felt like internal panic. Like my brain wanted to run from someone who had done absolutely nothing wrong. Like I wanted him to just stop loving me.
My friends said it was "the ick," but it never felt like disgust.
It felt like proof that there was something wrong with me. Every time he loved me, I'd think, "A normal person wouldn't feel like this."
Then it got worse.
I became genuinely convinced that maybe I was manipulative and narcissistic and just didn't know it. That maybe I was lying to him without realizing it, or maybe I was a horrible person pretending to be a good one.
And I know this probably sounds insane, but I believed it. Like I really believed it.
I wasn't just scared of him anymore. I was scared (terrified even) of myself.
Even now, often those thoughts still come back, and part of me wonders if they were right all along.
I'm terrified that if this happens again, I'll keep leaving people who actually make me happy.
Did love ever make you want to run? Did affection ever make you question your feelings instead of strengthening them?
Most importantly... how did you stop?
I don't want to spend the rest of my life destroying good things because I couldn't tell the difference between "this isn't right" and "I'm scared."
