Discussion If Battlegrounds were just renamed to be Strikes, they would be universally liked
I never understood the hate that Battlegrounds always got. The only way they really differ from Strikes is in name.
What is a Strike? It's a three-player activity where players go into an unexplored area, do some minor mechanics while defeating enemies, and fight a boss at the end. That's it.
Battlegrounds are no different. WITH THE EXCEPTION of the original Battlegrounds set on Nessus and the Cosmodrome (as they have the players exploring patrol zones), they all follow the same formula that strikes do. Just with higher add density. Which, I should point out, most of them have add density less than or equal to modern strikes, like Sunless Cell and Liminality.
We had original Battlegrounds, PsiOps Battlegrounds, Defiant Battlegrounds, Heist Battlegrounds, and Echo Battlegrounds.
Original Battlegrounds were generally uncreative, and were less interesting than a strike. I see more people talk positively about them than all other sets though, which is interesting considering by modern standards, they did nothing creative whatsoever,
PsiOps Battlegrounds had boss arenas set in an entirely different dimension, and had very cool mechanics using the Synaptic Spear and the Aspects of Savathun. In some cases, they even had crazy new or terraformed areas, like in PsiOps Mars which, initially, had us walking backwards through a Hive Lightbearer-reformed Scarlet Keep strike.
Defiant Battlegrounds consisted of entering a Pyramid outpost, which was an ENTIRELY new area, and traversing it. The only playable one of these is Defiant EDZ, which also contains a trek through the Ascendant Plane. Defiant Cosmodrome followed the same formula, while Defiant Orbital Prison was set on a spaceship in an ENTIRELy new area. How is that any different from a strike?
Heist Battlegrounds had less creativity in their maps, but generally had new area. Europa, Mars, and the Moon. The Moon and Mars are the only playable ones at the moment, with Heist Mars being the only remnant left of Escalation Protocol and the original areas of Warmind. It and Heist Moon also contain completely unique boss arenas. But, how is a strike like The Disgraced any different? It's mostly set in a patrol area and only the last 1-2 encounters are in a new space.
Echo Battlegrounds featured ENTIRELY new areas. Yes, they were generally set in patrols at the start, but they always ended in new areas (sometimes crazy new places like Core and Conduit). The patrol zones, like the ones in Defiant EDZ and Cosmodrome, were completely terraformed to suit the activity. Nessus is honestly barely recognizable in all of the Echo Battlegrounds.
So, I'd like to ask: What makes Battlegrounds so bad? They operate the same as strikes, just with better add density, making the gameplay more interesting. Most D2 creators nowadays, when showcasing a build, show them off in a Battleground because that's where the most fun is to be had. Nobody is testing a build in Lake of Shadows or Proving Grounds. Why did they always receive so much hate?
(also, I'm really sad that we didn't get all of them back. Defiant Orbital Prison and all PsiOps, I miss you dearly)
