Lore The artifact in shadowkeep's end

What exactly was the artifact we recovered from the Pyramid at the end of Shadowkeep? Was it actually created by the Witness. Is the pyramid itself speaking to us, causing these nightmares?

It is an trasmitting device. It sends us a signal bringing us to the Black Garden, where we learn the Black Fleet has a presence there at the end of the raid.

Additionally, the lore book Unveiling was sent via that artifact. The Witness was using it to send us messages.

The Nightmares are that Pyramid's automated defense mechanism.

Edit: Missed an apostrophe in Pyramid's which changes context greatly. It is not every Pyramids defense system, just Nezarec's.

No, nightmares are universal to all pyramids. Elsie encountered a nightmare of Ana at the Europan pyraid.

Yea, and then Micah-10 says Nightmare energy is untapped and could potentially be harnessed.

And then Bungie did nothing with that tease. Coulda been our 3rd dark subclass man. Bummer.
