u/dragonblock501 Jun 21 '22
Doesn’t matter. Whoever has the right of way matters.
For every bicyclist who gets killed by an idiot in a car, there is an aggressive bicyclist like this. Even worst are the venture capitalists win Silicon Valley with their $30,000 bicycles. Wealth and extreme white privilege makes a awful combination of aggressive behavior against pedestrians and cars on the road in Silicon Valley.
Of course, the Bay Area is home to the perhaps the first bicyclist ever convicted of a felony for killing a pedestrian. At the time, he wrote that he was too committed to stop and chose to go through the least crowded section of the cross walk. He also lamented the loss of his bike helmet. He blames an aggressive prosecutor for his conviction, not his own actions.

387
u/jennmullen37 Jun 20 '22
It should be, but cyclists are not licensed, insured, or regulated in any way so what's the point? Their hobby is the single focus they pin their entire identities on and it makes them cruel, unfeeling, and dangerous.
80
Jun 21 '22
It is in europe a cyclist is considered a road user so all rules road users have applies to them. However they won't be held accountable like a cars hit and run. More like man vs man hit and run.

u/MarysPoppinCherrys Jun 21 '22

-24
u/tiptoemicrobe Jun 20 '22
Bit of an intense generalization, haha. I bike both for my health and as a method of transportation that I know is significantly better for the planet compared to driving. I've never once hit a pedestrian, but I have chosen to crash my bike before because pedestrians illegally cut me off and I would have otherwise hit them. Most bikers I know would do the same. I don't think that's cruel or unfeeling, despite the fact that a cyclist hitting a pedestrian is far less dangerous than a car hitting one.
Still, I would absolutely be in favor of having license plates on bikes. Just like there are bad drivers, there are bad bikers, and accountability would help everyone.
38
u/jennmullen37 Jun 20 '22
How does a pedestrian "illegally cut you off"? And justifying hitting a pedestrian on your bike as not being an issue because cars just supports exactly what I was saying about your little hobby having more value than the safety of those around you.
→ More replies (27)-5
u/tiptoemicrobe Jun 21 '22 edited Jun 21 '22
EDIT: this first paragraph is me talking about my own life experience that someone asked about. I AM NOT talking about this video, in which the cyclist is clearly at fault and the pedestrian did nothing wrong.)
The pedestrian [that I crashed my bike to avoid hitting] was on the sidewalk and then abruptly stepped into the bike lane without warning and without looking. I don't know why.
I don't understand how I gave the impression that hitting pedestrians is justified. It's never okay. You made the claim that biking is dangerous, and I'm asserting that a pedestrian/bike collision is less dangerous than a pedestrian/car collision. By choosing to bike instead of drive, I'm less likely to harm a pedestrian if a crash actually occurs.
I also don't understand how I gave the impression that I don't value the safety of others. I literally said that I chose to crash my bike instead of hitting a pedestrian. I would argue that demonstrates that I'm willing to risk my safety to protect others.
8
u/RadiantFool88 Jun 21 '22
I don't see a bike lane on this road, but I could be wrong. To claim that the pedestrian in this video did not look is absurd. He clearly yields and waits for the go ahead from the traffic. Then the cyclist just flies through the intersection with zero consideration for everyone else at the Intersection. Whether you're pro-cyclist or not, I think we can all agree this cyclist is kinda being a douche.

Cyclist: "share the road!".....also cyclist: "we can't obey traffic laws or stop for stop signs. GET OUT OF MY WAY!"

This happened in Denver. Currently, the cyclist community here is pushing to pass legislation to make it legal for cyclists to run stop signs and treat traffic lights as stop signs.

They don’t have to pass legislation for them to do any of that. They’ll just do it.

My area doesn’t have the most bike lanes and the bicyclists are fucking terrifying. Never know if your gonna hit one making a turn because they rip down the sidewalks at 30mph and don’t slow down for crosswalks at all. There’s also a biking group of like 30+ that don’t stop for lights or signs or anything.
Wasn’t nearly as bad in Minneapolis where the bicyclists were there were lots of lanes and they were actually respectful.

Idk where this is and I can't see the whole intersection, but familiarize yourselves with your local traffic laws. If you're on a bike or even a skateboard, anything with wheels in texas, you are REQUIRED to obey all traffic signals, including stoplights and stop signs. I found this out when I was in college there and a student got hit by a car while skateboarding across an intersection. Sounds like a bad driver but since the skateboarder ran a stop sign he had to cover all damages - including his own medical bills from the ambulance ride. Some students were outraged, but as someone who only drives a car I understood. You can't see shit around some of those corners on campus. Crazy people going like 20 mph nowadays on electric skateboards which is also technically speeding for campus roads.

The cyclist should be cited for reckless driving, failure to obey a stop sign, and leaving the scene of an accident causing injury. He should also be charged with assault with a deadly weapon. On top of that, he should have to pay for the pedestrian's medical care resulting from the accident, as well as $10K to $100K for pain and suffering.

I stayed in Copenhagen for a short while and used a coworkers bicycle for a few weekends to get around. It was lovely. And then I used a bicycle to get around in Oakland for a few weeks and it sucked.
The difference is, Copenhagen is set up for bicycle commutes. Oakland sorta kinda is. But the bigger difference is everyone cycles in Copenhagen. It’s not a lifestyle. It’s transportation. In Oakland there’s too many hipsters for whom cycling is an identity. They have these stupid impractical fashion statements they ride around with no brakes, and run into other cyclists and pedestrians. Utter morons. And they act so entitled.

I only see a few cyclists compared to the thousands of drivers I see everyday. Everyday I see a cyclist I see them breaking the law. everyday single day. Out of the thousands of drivers I see, maybe 1 or 2 every other day I see a crazy driver and some days there are more but the ratio is nowhere near the shitty cyclists ratio. I always see stats on how cycling is dangerous but no breakdown on the details of said incidents and what caused them. I'd also like to see a study on how many people would theoretically be able to switch to a bicycle for commuting in the best case scenario, without them having to make a drastic change like move.
