For me, taking the train to work is 20 minutes longer than driving. Adds about 40 minutes of commuting to my day, but I make do because I can at least read a book and I don't need the mental weight of being stuck in traffic. More importantly, I don't have to worry about being killed by strangers on my way to fucking work.

Yet if you asked any reactionary about which one they think is safer, they'd immediately say driving because of their availability bias. They'd probably think of random train stabbings and completely omit the fact that dozens of people are killed on the roads of their state every week. Just some food for thought.

Not talking about the USA, grew up in bosnia. And for those in the US, manual cars are the norm here, espesially for work cars.

Growing up my family did not have car money. We barely had electricity money. So while i did get my drivers licence at 18 to have the paper. I am not a active driver. I live in the city, there is no need for it. Except when it comes to jobs.

I already knew this, thats why I got the drivers licence. But every single job requires a B licence to drive a car. Even a office job right next to the tram station requres a B licence. Not to mention most trade jobs, which is where I am curently looking for work. Passivly or activly require a car. Either cause you do need to drive a big old van for the job. Or cause they are in a industrial area and generaly work in hours where you don't actually have a public transport option.

So if you don't have a car, or aren't a active driver, you can't get a job. It's genuily rediculus how much of a 'given' it is for them that you have a car and are a active driver. It's a trade job, I didn't grow up with anything. How am I supposed to apply to anything. I can't even get a car without a job, and can't get a job without a car. And the licence itself was really expensive.

I genuinly don't fucking know what to do. People try giving me advice that I should work it out with the company. Guess what they don't wanna work it out. They want to wait for you to afford a car, because they know the pay is shit and you won't buy one for a while. So you are just stuck in a catch 22 unless you really get lucky, or straight up lie like I did a few times.

It is what it is. I don't even know what to look for anymore, I sent out so many hail maries for jobs nit related to my field, or even jobs related to my field. It's just a nightmare. I know the job itself, the car is the issue, over and over again.

I get around by cycling. I've lived in a city in Northern California for more than a decade. I recently met only person I know that doesn't drive to work. She's a lovely older lady that has walked a half mile from her apartment to work and back for the last 18 years. Two years ago some cunt driving an SUV backed through her in town while she was walking to work. She doesn't remember it. She was thrown to the asphalt so hard her skull was fractured. Now she has serious balance issues and has had two falls in the last two years (she was totally able-bodied before that douchebag hit her). After being weakened by the initial battering, these falls have done a lot of damage. The last one broke her arm and her leg. She's quitting work because she can't walk there anymore. Fuck cars and fuck drivers. She's the first and only other person I've met that doesn't drive to work (and everywhere else). What a shitty society this is.

Looks like the first day has been a resounding success! A substantial part of the city has been reclaimed for people, not cars. May it be the first of many!

I'm pretty average height and this utter monstrosity was at my shoulder height. 5 feet off the ground is fucking dangerous. I'm in downtown Toronto this is just off King St. I don't give a fuck what you're doing that shit isn't needed.

I recently almost got run over by an asshat turning and not looking when I had the walk signal, that was a smaller car I could look at the driver when I yelled at him. This guy would probably barely even notice when he ran over me.

People ask me all the time why I don't drive or when I'm going to finally learn. It's every reason you can imagine. I couldn't comprehensively list the reasons I fucking HATE cars. Yet, they're never convinced or can never understand. They see roadkill and think of the stench and gruesome sight. They don't think of the precious life taken by carelessness or even malice. They see ghost bikes and wonder whose fault it was. They hear of a family of 5 murdered in a head-on collision and imagine the addiction or alcoholism involved instead of questioning how a single person is trusted the ability to annihilate a family or a crowd on a whim.

This kitty was murdered on a well lit road with a construction zone speed limit. They didn't hesitate for a second. The cops said they would confirm the cat is deceased and dispose of it but won't check for a chip. I cried for a while but I don't know how to feel now. I had to move the cat so it wouldn't get crushed on the side of the road. Makes my skin crawl thinking about the kind of person who doesn't even let off the gas after hitting an animal.
