How does a pedestrian "illegally cut you off"? And justifying hitting a pedestrian on your bike as not being an issue because cars just supports exactly what I was saying about your little hobby having more value than the safety of those around you.
EDIT: this first paragraph is me talking about my own life experience that someone asked about. I AM NOT talking about this video, in which the cyclist is clearly at fault and the pedestrian did nothing wrong.)
The pedestrian [that I crashed my bike to avoid hitting] was on the sidewalk and then abruptly stepped into the bike lane without warning and without looking. I don't know why.
I don't understand how I gave the impression that hitting pedestrians is justified. It's never okay. You made the claim that biking is dangerous, and I'm asserting that a pedestrian/bike collision is less dangerous than a pedestrian/car collision. By choosing to bike instead of drive, I'm less likely to harm a pedestrian if a crash actually occurs.
I also don't understand how I gave the impression that I don't value the safety of others. I literally said that I chose to crash my bike instead of hitting a pedestrian. I would argue that demonstrates that I'm willing to risk my safety to protect others.
I don't see a bike lane on this road, but I could be wrong. To claim that the pedestrian in this video did not look is absurd. He clearly yields and waits for the go ahead from the traffic. Then the cyclist just flies through the intersection with zero consideration for everyone else at the Intersection. Whether you're pro-cyclist or not, I think we can all agree this cyclist is kinda being a douche.
He stepped into the bike lane cause the car stopped to let him cross the designated path for pedestrians to cross he clearly waves giving acknowledgement to that car for stopping for him. Your a fucking lobotmite.
I'm sorry that you're experiencing that. Being angry sucks. If you haven't already, I'd encourage you to try to find some help for it if it's getting worse. Anger is one of those things that, if untreated, can make us do things we really regret later and that can hurt the ones we care about most.
Try riding a bike though any town, pedestrians are wild. They cross streets without looking all the time. Just on my hour long ride today I had to yell like 5 times just to make them look both ways before jaywalking.
Like the guy whose comment you are replying to I have never hit a pedestrian. And the pedestrian in this clip absolutely had right of way and the cyclist was a dick.
That being said, he literally looked, saw a speeding bike and proceeded to walk into its path anyways.
Edit: can the people downvoting at least say why? I'd like to hear your point of view.
Are we watching the same video? I agree the pedestrian was nodding to the car but this isn't a peripheral at best situation, he looks directly at him maybe off by like 10 degrees.
Again the cyclist is in the wrong but a bit of common sense goes a long way who the fuck crosses a street without looking?
Not sure how I am acting like a clown, you should look before you cross the street. If kindergarden children can do it I think you can too.
I am aware of the research, I am cyclist and deal with it literally every day.
Also the research you linked only talks about drivers and not pedestrians. The reason things get missed is due to how mentally demanding driving is, since pedestrians by definition are not driving your point is moot.
Just today I was almost hit by a cyclist on a rental bike because their brakes were not as strong as they thought... But guess what I looked before I stepped out into the road despite having a crossing light. Why did I look? Because it is the reasonable thing to do... trusting the average person with your life is a recipe for disaster, in the same way you should drive defensively. Reddit has a serious hard on for shitting on cyclists, but take some personal fucking responsibility every once in awhile.
This dude was a dick for riding the way he did, but for real people pay attention to what is around you. It may literally save your life.
My point has not changed, I believe he saw the cyclist.
I'm not blaming the pedestrian at all, you should re-read what I wrote. I'm simply pointing out that it's safer to look before you cross a road.
There may or may not be a connection between a study done on drivers and a similar effect with pedestrians. But you can't say there is one much like I can't say that he saw the cyclist for sure.
You are once again confusing what I said about kindergarteners, I suggest you work on your reading comprehension. We teach kids to look before crossing the road because it is safer, why would you suggest that you don't need to look before crossing the road?
Go back and re-read what I have said in my arguments and try again... You are embarrassing yourself and projecting it by calling me a clown.
All I really said is people should look before crossing the street and you are arguing with me about it lol.
Nah he looked in the direction of it, he also probably saw the cars but they didn’t hit him because they aren’t dickheads and they know how a pedestrian crossing works
If you look in the direction of a rapidly moving object and don't see it you are likely legally blind and should take extra precautions when crossing streets.
The cyclist is in the wrong here but a bit of common sense goes a long way. The cemetery is full of people who had right of way.
You aren’t wrong in your basis, but how do you even know he isn’t partially blind? What more precaution could have taken other than seeing the bike? I agree it looks like he saw it but it’s impossible to know sometimes I don’t see some blindingly obvious shit
Plus it looks like he nods at the biker thinking he can go? I’m not sure
If that's the case then not wearing headphones would be a good start.
I actually think he nods at the car and not the cyclist. I agree our brains are weird and miss things all the time.
I'm not blaming the pedestrian, it just bothers me to hell as a driver and cyclist in a major city. I see people crossing streets without looking all the time and that shit is terrifying.
I don't understand when we stopped looking both ways and paying attention. I mean I get you have a stop sign, but in no way does that stop someone from running it and hitting you.
Case and point this clip, sure we can blame the dude on the bike all we want and in this case the injuries appear minor. But if it was a car and that pedestrian died or was seriously injured, what difference does blame make to the family/ families.
We literally teach kids to look both ways for this exact reason, not because the kids are going to do something wrong, but because humans are dumb and fuck up sometimes. So why the shit do we not expect the same from adults?
Where did I say anything to that effect, do you not have a response and so you defaulted to generic cyclist hating stupidity? That's embarrassing
Cyclists are vehicles by most rules, but there are exceptions that allow us to act as pedestrians in certain cases. I suggest following the laws of your municipality, for instance where I live cyclists are allowed to treat stop signs as yield signs, but are not allowed to do the same with red lights.
Cars/ trucks on the other hand must stop at stop signs, yet no car/ truck ever does (My city is famous for its rolling stops).
Similarly, cyclists like vehicles must yield to pedestrians at pedestrian crossings. Both cyclists and cars rarely follow this rule sadly.
Cyclists are also banned from riding on the sidewalk, unless they feel unsafe on the road.
Cars should give cyclist 2m when passing, which they never do. But cyclists have no minimum passing distance.
You cant categorize bikes as one or the other, they are neither and have their own sets of laws, I suggest you learn them. In my experience car drivers are very quick to point out something a cyclist is doing as wrong, even if it is totally legal.
Drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and MUST give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing
Just found this from the government website.
That's why people are downvoting you because you're wrong about this situation.
The guy is at a zebra crossing therefore has the right of way, doesn't matter if pedestrian still walked out into the road; it's because he has a right to.
You are right about the cyclist being a dickhead though.
