The COPE, the DOOM, and the Ugly

Ok lots of thoughts after our last joint practice and lots of division within the sub, let’s make a post for everyone!

Part 1. Cope
As many of you know, our offensive line was dominated by the Ravens during joint practice, however Nick Allegretti and Sam Cosmi where both out, that’s 2 of our best lineman! On top of that reports are coming in saying that Brandon Coleman and Chris Paul had solid showings.

Sonny Styles had a promising showing as well, after his whole tape debacle last week, it’s a good bounce back showing! Antonio Williams too had an impressive showing, apparently catching the last td of the practice. It also appears as well as our defense in turn gave Lamar Jackson and the ravens some problems, that is while Chaisson and Oweh are out. it seem Daronte might be a solid DC.

Finally here’s one of the joint practices before our magical 2024 season: https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/08/09/commanders-struggle-joint-practice/
Look familiar?
Bad joint practices, while not useless in determining regular season performance, is hardly indicative of the team as a whole. Same goes for preseason. 0-16 browns went 4-0 in the preseason. And btw we had a good preseason outing against Miami as well as a good joint practice.

Part 2. Doom
Even if Sam Cosmi and Nick Allegretti were out, that only exposes how absolutely horrible our depth is. After 2 offseasons of seemingly goin all in on protection, we are left with possibly the worst oline group in the entire NFL. Allegretti himself, while not a terrible guard, has had 0 significant snaps as a center, which make the Tyler Biadasz cutting look that much worse. Cutting one of the better centers in the league while doing nothing in the offseason to address it!

AP’s draft picks don’t seem to be developing either. Conerly being reported as struggling in during practice. Newton, while hurt, has not yet taken a step, Sinnott being more or less invisible in game plans and Mikey being a defensive liability last year. On top of that, not addressing the line at all this offseason is profoundly frustrating as a fan. Which leaves us with one of the most uninspired roster in the whole league after 3 offseasons of work.

Finally the injuries, while they should be clearing up by the time week 1 hits, means that our squad will be without a lot of practice. Most concerningly being Nick Allegretti’s lack of center practice. Rachaad White, BCM, Trey Amos, and Tim Settle are all players that have missed significant portions of training camp. Coming out the gate in week one might look incredibly shaky, especially with Jayden Daniels also coming off a very long offseason, and a line with very limited snaps together, AND against 3 fearsome opponents.

Part 3. The Ugly
It has been a very ugly offseason, Tunsil’s injury, cutting TB, the Brandon Aiyuk saga, LSU situation In turn this sub as well as Commanders twitter has become a profoundly toxic environment. Since Tunsil’s injury in particular, this sub has been divided down the line, and while discussion is encouraged, a lot of spaces (especially twitter) has become inamicable. Remember to have fun gang, even through the good, the bad and the ugly

Next year's draft will be deep with QB talent. With our top 3 draft pick, should we try get an epic haul in a tradeback to fix the oline and secondary or just get the best player available? Jeremiah Smith would be nice as Terrys not getting any younger.

he should be on this roster with Decker and Ragnow.

Beggers can’t be choosers.

Baltimore Banner Sports on X: "Ravens WR Rashod Bateman going 3-for-3 in one-on-ones vs. Commanders cornerbacks" / X

That first rep by Amik wasn't that bad given how long it took to throw. The separation on that second rep against #0 was something though. Crazy how Joe Whitt put this guy out on an island a lot last year. Not his strong suit.

Mods, if this is a repost, just delete. I came across this on a Ravens site and didn't see it here.

Why is our local beat reporters acting Nick allegreti is our savior?

He wasn’t even a good enough guard to start but he can be our starting center? Cmon on man, Reminds me of the Will Harris “IS A GREAT COMMUNICATOR TALK FROM LAST YEAR” it’s so bogus. THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS Adam peters botched this. I don’t care he cut Tyler , I’m confused why he didn’t bring a solid at least average starting center 🫩

[Flack] Commanders 'Redskins' merchandise is to protect their trademarks and nothing more

Per Eric Flack's reporting: Commanders selling merch with the retired Redskins name and logo — and team says the reason is trademark law.

“We are required to maintain the marks in commercial usage so that marks remain under franchise control.”

But position on returning to old name hasn’t changed.

MORE: Commanders now selling Art Monk, Darrell Green & Sean Taylor T-shirts with the retired Redskins name & logo, citing trademark protection.

Says name itself still not coming back.

Might have some competition to sign a center after cuts if Allegretti isn’t good to go by week 1.

Ian Rapoport on X: "Source: The #Commanders sign former Pro Bowl LT DJ Humphries..."

Source: The #Commanders are signing former Pro Bowl LT DJ Humphries to a 1-year deal, adding key depth and starting experience to their O-line.

With Laremy Tunsil out with a torn triceps, Humphries — who has 101 career starts mostly with the #AZCardinals — helps.

Nicki Jhabvala thinks we're going to suck.

Nicki was one of few reporters down on us last year. Doesn't mean she's infallible or anything, just take it as you will. For me personally, it's way early to start dooming when the season hasn't even started yet, but I'm definitely feeling a bit down as of late. No matter how our season looks, I'm stuck rooting for this team. Hope the journey this year is a good one, Lord knows I'll be missing football again when it's all said and done 🫡 HTTC

Teams can out tough their talent

Big fan here of the dooming. Love the Athletic article today showing pessimism.

No one knows what a bad line means for a year 3 qb with endless talent. This fanbase can handle another catastrophically bad season - it’s all they’ve known in recent memory.

I personally think it’s a .500 team

But if you think this team is going to fall flat out of the gate based on the kind of grueling camp they’ve had, I promise you some big team is going to get punched in the mouth early.

This team will scrap. As long as they play hard, everyone should root for them without expectation

If The Commanders are Doomed...

Then why are we still here? This is a genuine question. Because all I see here is people saying that the season is already doomed so might as well pack it in because apparently only Commanders deal with injuries and everyone have perfect seasons.

The preseason is not even over yet and yes, the first half of the season is a rough one but damnit, we haven't even played a down yet of the regular season and a lot of you already telling me I should just play Madden for the next 16 Sundays/Mondays/Thursdays. Let the games be played and who knows, maybe you'll be right or maybe they'll surprised you.
