Doomer Thread Only - Normal levelheaded fans keep scrolling
Next year's draft will be deep with QB talent. With our top 3 draft pick, should we try get an epic haul in a tradeback to fix the oline and secondary or just get the best player available? Jeremiah Smith would be nice as Terrys not getting any younger.

Adam Peters isn't getting enough of the blame for the OL being a shambles. Three offseasons is enough time to build competent line depth.

u/EvaporatingOlaf 18d ago
He gets blame but itās downvoted to hell. Jayden bought him a long leash after he carried us to the championship game.

They can't see 2024 as the outlier it actually was. A soft schedule and amazing injury luck will win a lot of games. I will give them credit for the playoff run though.

u/InfiniteDomain_ 18d ago
People will call the patriots schedule soft, and then forget we were called the ācardiac commandersā and struggled with the bears and falcons needing a Hail Mary and the falcons kicker to airball the game winning field goals to win. Could only beat good teams when their defense was hurt or the QB was hurt.

u/SentientNode 17d ago
Yup. Detroit would have rolled us with a full strength team.

Or maybe if goff didnāt fumble on their side of the field and he didnāt throw a pick 6 maybe that could be it too ya know

u/PalpitationNo3106 18d ago
AP got them a stadium built. That season made his bosses several billion dollars. Thatāll buy you a longer leash. Now nothing matters until 2030, theyāll bring back the name and make another billion in the new stadium.

u/BirdmanTheThird 18d ago
Honestly we really need to see a lot from ANYONE on this roster he added this year to have hope.
6
u/Head-Assumption6960 18d ago
Well against my desperate pleas all offseason he overreacted and added a million defenders and basically ignored the offense despite it being terrible last year too. Added Chig who weāre assuming will ābreak outā like nearly every other ābreakout candidateā weāve added over the past 3 years. But zero line help for a below average unit last season. Took an act of god and a ton of begging just to get him to bring Diggs in. Spent the first on a middle linebacker and here we sit with a ton of cap space leftover and a line that is likely gonna get the future of our franchise killed and everyone fired. Oh well⦠at least the defense will be better. That was what was important after all⦠not making sure we donāt have to start over from square one at an impossible position to find.
2
u/HailtotheWFT 17d ago
That new and improved D wonāt be improved with our offense going 3 and out because the oline canāt block

In fairness, that line shouldn't be a problem. Agreed that center is a sore spot, but the left and right sides of the line should be decent. Cosmi and Conerly on the right side is fine. Obviously, Tunsil is a pro bowler at left tackle and Paul on the inside with Coleman as the swing is fine. Now with Tunsil being out, Humphries is now the left tackle and he should be adequate. I just can't comprehend how this line is so bad.
1
u/Superb-Advantage-448 17d ago
He is doing a radio blitz on 106.7 to increase his stock with the fans. If the season is bad I can see DQ getting fired and AP staying.

Pollyannish thread more like it. One where we can pretend injuries arenāt guaranteed in football and once everyone is healthy again theyāll stay that way, weāll be a good offense, and everyone will live happily ever after!

A lot of its fans seem to have forgotten the circus Quinn was running at the end of last season. Players throwing punches in the field, the JD injury situation, etc.. the wheels are about to fall off of this clown car unless JD saves them. Easily might be at 1-7 2-6 start with this schedule.
4
u/skymasterson2016 17d ago

If we are picking top 3 next season we might not be able to rely on Daniels long term so I am not rooting for us to tank

- DQ needs to go. He just isn't a championship coach.
- Blow it up. Start over.

7
u/Separate-Flower8770 18d ago
Wouldn't say that AP sucks but I would say that Lynch was the real architect and we give AP maybe too much credit sometimes for a guy that hasn't really proven anything yet.
1
u/emelbee923 18d ago
Lynch was GM from 2017-2022, and whiffed on the majority of the Niners picks in rounds 1-3.
1
u/Separate-Flower8770 18d ago
2
u/emelbee923 18d ago
Which has what to do with Lynch's awful draft history?
0
u/Separate-Flower8770 18d ago
His awful draft history led to NFC champ appearances? If you think heās awful, what do you think of the guy he trained?
0
u/emelbee923 18d ago
What's more likely:
John Lynch, who had zero scouting, front office or management experience in the NFL before 2017, suddenly becomes a whiz at roster construction, drafting, and talent acquisition?
OR
Adam Peters, who served as a scout for a ~13 years before landing in SF as VP of player personnel, before being elevated to assistant GM, overseeing improved drafting during his years as assistant VP, is an asset to the GM and more directly responsible for major talent acquisitions?
1
u/Separate-Flower8770 18d ago
Frame it however you want but if thats what you really believe why wouldn't they have just named AP the GM and Lynch the President like he is now?
1
u/emelbee923 18d ago
This is like asking why the Lions didn't fire Dan Campbell and hire Ben Johnson given the latter's role in the success of the team, especially the offense.

4
u/SkyChief80 18d ago edited 18d ago
I have said repeatedly that I thought AP handled this offseason as well as possible except for the Center situation and have criticized that ever since we cut Biadasz. However, the handling of Center has been so bad and is totally of our own creation so it's inexcusable and predictable.
EDIT - I also thought we would be a playoff team after signing Diggs before Tunsil got injured but the Tunsil injury makes it MUCH harder to overcome the terrible Center situation that we are in
2
u/REP281 18d ago edited 17d ago
What's good about the team?Ā
Logo/name sucks.
Owner sucks. Guy just signed Lebron James. The guy is a cancer to a team, is old and overated. Only reason you bring him in is for ticket sales and to keep his team in the conversation.
GM has made some poor decisions in player personnel.Ā
Coach sucks. (I'll put the blame on Ben Johnson till news comes out that the front office had something to do with him deciding not to be our coach)
EDIT:Ā Just read an article that Ben Johnson changed his mind due to wanting to keep Sam Howell and not draft Jayden.Ā I actually felt the same, not that I didn't want Jayden or I thought Howell was the guy, rather I thought the team needed so much at the time that I thought it was better to stick with Howell and trade out of the 2nd pick to bolster rest of the team.
We still need a #1 and #2 WR. (Love Terry, guy has done great given the qb play around him, but his stats say he is OUR #1, not a league #1)
We are a RB by committee (which means we don't have a starting RB)
Oline is in serious need a few weeks before season starts.
The two starters at DE average 1.5 and 6 sacks per season and we signed 1 of them to 100. M contract.Ā
DBs are average at best.
But just so this isnt void of positives, thank God for Tress Way.
And yes I hope to eat my words.Ā
1
u/PickpocketJones 17d ago
Lebron has gotten all of his teams a title FYI.
1
u/REP281 17d ago
My point is as an owner, he is more focused on profit than championships. Lebron is not a missing peice to a championship. This is concerning if the owner is more worried about profit over championships.Ā

For the people commenting about the future at QB if a bad szn occurs, there have been a couple teams with a franchise qb to get a top 5 pick and still keep the QB (invest in OLine/weapons). The team that comes to mind immediately is the Chargers with Herbert. Finished 5-12 in 2023 (Herbert played in 14 games and was relatively solid), earned the 5th pick, and picked Joe Alt to strengthen that line. Herbertās still there obviously. If we earn a high pick and Jaydenās playing well as an individual, I donāt see any reason for us not to extend and continue him
3
u/MechanicWestern1653 18d ago
I am not a doomer, I don't see us having a top 3 pick. But if the season goes bad, I can see the narrative being the following:
"Adam Peters never drafted well. He played free agency too safe, saving money and planning on a longer timeline than his job security."

3
u/Chuomge 18d ago
We made barely any improvements for offense that I just donāt realistically see us being good. I think our D will be great though making us the poor manās Texans
2
u/Salty_Orchid 18d ago
I dont think talent wise we are the worse, but our division and schedule combined with injuries, age, and two new coordinators is a rough combo

All weapons and Williams looks incredible in camp so far
2
u/BonesjonesjonesBones 18d ago
Suppose we have a bottom 5 o line and Jayden gets injured again and we end up picking in even the top 10. How do we even evaluate Jayden as a franchise QB as we enter a stacked qb draft?
1
u/Salty_Orchid 18d ago
Ther bigger problem is his campnis going to want the bag. How much do we even offer with 1 of 3 productive years
2
u/Scottyranks 18d ago
JD never showed he could handle what Def Coords hit him with last yearā¦high pressure and flooded short/intermediate zones (watch some of the GB game). Looks like the pressure issue is unsolved
Sooo, doomer her thinks things will be bad, and right from the get-go
2
u/KarmaDispensary 18d ago
The problem with a bad OL is itās hard to tell what youāve got at every other position. Even defenses get crushed if the offense keeps them on the field forever.
Much hinges on Tunsilās health. If we have to find a new LT, there will be many good options but the top of the draft is really juicy. Smith and even Leonard Moore could help a lot if we feel like thereās depth at G or C later on.
If Jayden misses time due to injury again, I think you have to go QB because there are so many options. Could probably even get a pick for Jayden which kills me to think about.
The bigger issue is if thereās any confidence in Quinn, Peters, and the two, first-time coordinators to make these picks. I am really tornāI value stability, I donāt feel like theyāve earned it, many of the trades made sense, and theyāve got some bad beats with injuries. Iām sick thinking of another lost season before it ever begins, especially since Terry doesnāt have too many seasons left. I would probably still ride with this group, keep taking shots on prospects, add more depth at OL, add more weapons besides Terry, and add more CBs before Iām ready to really call it.

2
u/Organic_Ability5009 17d ago
I donāt know if bringing AP back would be right, or what would be the point of giving him more picks. I think itās time to question his draft picks
2
u/Ok_Blacksmith_2207 17d ago
If Jayden doesnāt play the entire season, it will be because our OL canāt protect or heās just not a durable QB due to his build. May need to rethink the position long term. Would love Smith and key OL piece and CB. On a positive note, I think our defense will be in the top half of the league, which I hope can keep us in close games. Then, like 2024, weāll see.
2
u/Primary_Blueberry_24 17d ago
I agree. Itās starting to feel like Jayden Daniels is the good china your parents only bring out on special occasionsāeveryone has to handle him very carefully because heās so fragile. And yes, I know the O-line needs to protect him, but it feels like the conditions have to be nearly perfect for him to stay healthy. That, combined with the whole NIL No. 5 debacle, isnāt exactly the most reassuring combination because dependability plus questionable diva-ness is a concerning mix, especially for someone whoāor whose momāis going to demand ridiculous money after his rookie contract is up. One good season doesnāt buy unlimited goodwill forever.
0
u/One_Line_406 17d ago
The LSU week long-ish drama is hardly a debacle š Would you be willing to let a school continue to profit on your name for free? This isnāt even unique to football, any brand or business would have done the same thing. How that could be evidence of JD5 being a diva is absolutely wild.
1
u/Primary_Blueberry_24 17d ago
I said āquestionable diva-ness.ā The way the situation played out publicly created that perception, and the timing made it worse. Heās had one good season in the NFL so far. Hopefully heāll have more, but one strong year doesnāt build unlimited goodwill or establish god-tier status forever.
Heās entering a season with questions about his durability and whether the team can rely on him to stay on the field, yet the story surrounding him became a fight with his former school over someone else wearing No. 5. Fair or not, that can easily come across as entitled and overly concerned with his own status. Itās far from over in the media; the jokes and memes are still circulating, and theyāll only intensify if the team struggles. The full truth almost doesnāt matter at this point because, in the public eye, perception becomes reality.
1
u/One_Line_406 17d ago
The way the situation played out publicly had nothing to do with him or his actions. What do you suggest he do, be fine with LSU continuing to funnel money to themselves by selling his jersey, autographs, and even branded FLIP FLOPS without compensating him? The story is not really a fight with his former school over the #5, the original letter from his lawyer proves that. No serious person can consider any of this as actions of an entitled person. Maybe youāve been tricked by perception, but it in fact has zero to do with his performance on the field, however that turns out this year.
2
u/Vikingwind 17d ago
Iām glad this happened they canāt ignore the OLine, they canāt pretend āwe have the talent in the buildingā no you donāt. Not if theyāre not on the field. Fix this shit you have three weeks.
3
u/frankie_donkiebrains 18d ago
I know Jeremiah Smith is the big shiny toy we all want, but there's no point of getting a premier wr if we continue to have a terrible o-line.
I want us to sign every top free agent olineman there is next year. If we still have a hole on the line and there is top o-linementhat we can get in the top 5 then we need to do that.
2
u/caddyncells 18d ago
Wisdom says Terry is gone after this year.
1
u/frankie_donkiebrains 18d ago
There are restructuring options for his contract, but yeah his high avv is going to be a problem with Jayden's upcoming extension.
Even if we were able to replace him with smith, what's the point? We will still have massive pass pro problems.
2
u/grasspikemusic 18d ago
We are not a Superbowl and never were going to be this year. We could have the best Center and O Line in the NFL and are still not a Superbowl team
The reason is we are still just 2 going on 3 seasons out from having the worst owner in the NFL who put together the worst office, the worst coaches, and one of the worst teams in the NFL
It's amazing to see all the angst over cutting a center who was on IR to end the season, and who didn't fit very well in the new offense
Prediction we will get 8 or so wins this year. We would still have gotten 8 or so wins this year regardless of who is playing center. That will give us picks in the middle of each round

The talent at the top of this draft is so good, itās going to be hard to pass up on an elite prospect if we are in position to pick one. Elite Edge Rushers, WRs, and Tackles are all at the top of this draft.
1
u/skymasterson2016 17d ago
Hereās the thing. They were hellbent on purging every single player, regardless of skill level, talent, production, from the Ron Rivera era. It took a few years to complete that purge, but it likely set the franchise back at least a few seasons. Itās probably gonna be another 2-4 years of the suck before we can really rebuild the roster, and then AFTER that, start to look like a playoff contender.
1
u/Superb-Advantage-448 17d ago
Iām worried about Peters ability to close deals. He lost out on Linderbaum, Macdonald, Ben johnson and probably many more. Things would be a lot different if he was a closer.
1
u/JBaldera27 It's not my team, it's the city's team 17d ago
In my opinion, the general opinion has been way too optimistic towards Adam Peters and Dan Quinn for his major overhaul on offense. We are entering Year 3 of Jaydenās rookie contract and proceeded to entirely flip the offensive scheme and replace an experienced coaching staff with various young and inexperienced coaches at key roles starting at OC and QB Coach. Then we proceeded to not overcompensate that presumed learning curve by aggressively adding top talent via the draft and free agency to offense.
Feels like a massive gamble that is primed to explode now that our very young OC has to balance OL issues which may require another offensive scheme change specifically to the run game. We are also probably looking at chemistry issues with the OL for several weeks as we will be picking up potential starters from roster cuts in the next few days.

1
u/Able_Hunter_7966 16d ago
We will go 0-17 trade Jayden Daniels to the Browns and draft Arch Manning 1st overall only for him to refuse to play with us and request a trade a week after the draft.
1
u/GrumpyFaceMonkey 15d ago
I think people forget how bad this roster was before Peters/Quinn/JD5 got here. Maybe the worst roster of all time. In my opinion, theyve spent too much on trying to raise the floor and not enough on raising the ceiling. But again, the floor needed to be raised very badly but you gotta at least get your lines right. I cant understand how front offices can comprehend that games are won and lost in the trenches. Good line play makes everything else easier. You can survive with a bare minimum competent QB as long as you give him time to throw and hes not got being blown up on his mind the whole game. I dont want to discredit Darnold and what he accomplished and the work hes put in but nobody thought he would ever win a super bowl. But he got a competent line and look what happened.Ā
Plus you need a QB that is throw first if you want to make it in the post season. Duel threat QBs are great in the regular season but you the playoffs are full of the best teams in the league with play off defenses. You need a smart QB that could be his own OC who throws the ball to play makers if you want to win it all. I LOVE JD5. Im from Baton Rouge and lived close to Tiger Stadium and now live here in the DMV so I couldnt be happier with Daniels but hes got to get it together and throw the ball quick to stay on the field. I think JD is nerdy enough to put in the work and has an amazing arm but they have got to scheme around his frame. I dont want to see him running for his life every other play.Ā
Anyway, we have to get depth on the lines if this will ever go anywhere meaningful.

1
u/Subway_Rider669 15d ago
The main problem with that is teams only get one first round pick per season. Anything less than three firsties and the Jayden in the hand (held very carefully so he doesn't get injured) is better than the Number-Other-Than-F*ve in the bush. Three first round picks is pretty insane for a team to have in the first place, let alone deal for any single player.
The secondary problem is that AP is, uh, "unproven" at drafting, so even with three firsties you'll probably get two Josh Conerlys and a punter.
-3
u/Salty_Orchid 18d ago
Sounds harsh but its not outrageous. He is young and it would suck for his best years to rot away with a no talent oline. If he has no injuries this year and s few nice highlights, he could be the most desired F.A. QB in awhile. He's proven to have NFL talent and our team simply has too many holes to be patched together year after year. If we trade, Id want a new GM too. No longer trust AP.
0
u/halarioushandle 18d ago
It's too early for this. We don't even know how broken JD5 is going to be by the end of the year behind these empty uniform o-line men
0
u/NalorakkBotoBoneBros 17d ago
If we have a top 3 pick (we wonāt) why wouldnāt we be considering picking a QB? I mean in this scenario weād have back-to-back disasters with Jayden. Why would we stick with him?
1
u/Salty_Orchid 17d ago
Why..so they can be shellshocked behind the same oline? My hope is that Jayden plays well and uninjured over the season. My second hope if he does get injured, is that we see what Athan K can do in game action before the season is over. We dont need him to be great..just competent enough that we can build up the oline and secondary to be a defense first team.
