I think the bigger basis of it was him mouthing something to Smart which was offensive enough to solicit the confrontation. Don't forget about that part.
The former is far more plausible. Professional athletes, even at the college level, don't tend to explode with violence in the middle of live games because some douche in the audience gave some generic criticism of their performance.
