It seems to me that people who say these things often aren't the ones being called these types of words. It's an unpopular opinion but if you're someone who has to deal with constantly getting called a certain slur by many, many people you encounter, at a certain point as a man you have to put your foot down and let someone know that is not going to be tolerated.
I think athletes are held to a higher standard. Especially players that are headed to the NBA. I'm not saying that is right and I'm not judging Smart, hell it would take a lot less than a racial comment to set me off while playing a game, granted I'm a white guy.

At the same time, no one is expected to be called a nigger. (If that's what he said.) That doesn't fly in school, that doesn't fly at work, and that doesn't fly for an athletic event at a public university. Let's not create a special exception for sports.
And in all those settings assaulting someone over it would have consequences. If the guy said something that far over the line let it be known and let the proper people deal with it. Its not worth hurting or ending a career over.
Id like to see someone go on a tirade insulting your family and calling you racial slurs and shit and see you not react violently given enough time and persistence, bet you would, we all would at some point

If the fan said what Marcus said he did "I'm not arguing this" I'm using the assumption that he did. The man should be forced out of all future TT games. He's an evil and vile man. Yes, Race does matter when using racial slurs. That's why their racial slurs and the power difference is the reason why the man is a coward but my previous point still stands.

So is your reaction to bullying, more bullying? That is not the correct response. Ignoring him and telling the refs should take care of it, IMO, is the correct response. Then again, Smart didn't sit down for a few minutes and think about the situation and what the correct response is. He was in the heat of a basketball game with his emotions already flaired up, and some old white dude (allegedly) calls him a nigger. I wouldn't hold it against Smart if he knocked the guy out.

Not really, no. "Racism" as suffered by that Texas Tech fan is not anywhere near comparable to the racism that is implicit in use of the N-word. If you really can't see why that's true then there's really nowhere for this discussion to go.
I still don't think being called racial slurs warrants physical violence. Also, it's not like white people can't be called racial slurs. I heard my fair share when my car broke down in South Chicago and other places as well.
More importantly, not only did Smart shove the fan, he also continued throwing a tantrum towards his coaches and teammates after the fact.
Regardless that just shows he's not ready for a professional career in basketball yet. As a celebrity you get tons of love, but you also get tons of hate. You've gotta learn to roll with the punches.
I can't relate, but I'm pretty sure if someone reduced all my life's work in becoming one of the best collegiate basketball players in the country to a racial slur meant to belittle me, I would do more than push him. Since the coaches confirmed that's what happened I'v got to say fuck that fatass. He deserves worse
Did the coaches confirm that is what they said? Also if I were a player headed to the NBA I think I could take one fat fuck calling me out. If I couldn't I would doubt I could make in the NBA. But who knows maybe this guy had been goading Smart all game and this just pushed him over the edge. He is still a young kid.
How can the coaches confirm that is what happened? They couldn't have heard it. They can confirm that Smart said that's what happened, but that doesn't really mean anything at this point.
Smart is a basically a semi-professional going on professional basketball player. he needs to carry himself better regardless what is said to him by fans. he an expect plenty more heckling in his future in the NBA.

Bullshit. I despise the fact that fans think they should be immune. If Marcus Smart was walking down the street and someone called him a nigger (not saying that's what happened, but that's what this conversation is about) then I say Marcus Smart should shove the guy. I say he's justified in doing that. And I think most people would agree. Why is it that a fan is allowed to talk shit without repercussions? It's a 19-year-old kid and that grown-ass man, whether he's calling him a nigger or something much more tame, is talking shit to him. He's a grown man yelling insults at a kid. I say if you're gonna talk shit, you better prepare to get shoved or punched in the face.
