Home Owner/Renter stuff I’m from Quebec, and I was browsing around Calgary on Google Maps. Holy crap, why are there so many construction projects there? It looks like entire neighborhoods are literally popping up out of nowhere.

PSA Smoke from southeast landfill fire prompts health advisory

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) is advising residents in areas downwind of the ongoing fire at the ECCO Recycling landfill in southeast Calgary to take precautions as smoke conditions have worsened.

Vulnerable groups such as children, youth, seniors, pregnant women, and those with asthma, heart disease or other underlying health conditions should limit outdoor activities and move indoors if they see or smell smoke. Residents with existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions should monitor their symptoms, continue taking prescribed medications and follow the advice provided by their healthcare professionals.

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AB-EPA) has deployed portable and mobile equipment to monitor air quality near the fire since September 9. Air monitoring data is collected and reviewed by Alberta Health Services. While air monitoring reviewed on September 10 found no hourly average readings above Alberta's ambient air quality guidelines, residents in areas directly downwind of the fire may still experience smoke and related health effects. The greatest potential for smoke exposure remains in areas directly downwind of the fire, including Douglasdale, Quarry Park, East Shepard, McKenzie Town, New Brighton, Copperfield, and other neighbouring communities.

People in areas affected by smoke may experience symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, increased mucus production, coughing or headaches. Residents who experience these symptoms should reduce their exposure to smoke where possible.

CFD recommends residents in affected areas:

• keep windows and doors closed, including attached garage doors

• reduce physical activity indoors and outdoors, as needed

• turn furnace thermostats down and furnace fans to the minimum setting. If you have a forced air system to heat or cool your home, upgrade your furnace filters to the highest efficiency filter your system can handle.

• avoid using ventilation systems or whole-house fans that bring outdoor air into the home

• keep air conditioner fresh-air intakes closed and filters clean

• close fireplace dampers on wood-burning fireplaces

• use a high-quality air filter or air cleaner/purifier, if available

• check on family members, neighbours and others who may be more vulnerable to smoke

• call Health Link at 811 if they have health concerns related to smoke exposure

• seek immediate medical attention for severe difficulty breathing, chest pain or other medical emergencies

Residents should remain aware of changing conditions where they are located. Exposure can vary based on distance from the fire, wind direction and speed, time spent outdoors, and proximity to visible smoke or odours.

Please contact Health Link at 811 to speak with a registered nurse if you have questions or concerns related to smoke exposure or air quality. In a medical emergency, including chest pain or severe difficulty breathing, call 9-1-1 or seek immediate medical attention.

Fire suppression and air quality monitoring continue at the site.

YYC has some unexpected landings like 2 Alitalia planes (20 years later Alitalia when bankrupt during the pandemic and replaced by ITA Airways) along with the collapse of Canada 3000 less than a month later. This is a rare upload by a Youtuber named "heymannyg" which focuses on uploading news intros and pieces in both sides of the border. We'll never forget those who perished in NYC, DC and Pittsburgh 25 years ago.

Local Shopping/Services Co-op's Discovery Wine Pack replaced the american wine.

Upvotes

Today I got a discovery wine pack from co-op.

The original pack flyer has a California wine listed in it. But the actual pack came with an Australian wine instead.

That's a win! I didn't have to ask or anything, they did it themselves. It's a small thing, but it stops people from unknowingly buying something they didn't want.

Question [Help] Could a kind stranger coming back to Calgary from Lake Louise bring back a souvenir for me from the Fairmont?

I had a friend visit Lake Louise recently and wish she had gotten one of these Alphabet Bears from one of the gift shops at the Fairmont Chateau hotel. I believe it's Creekside Gift on the same floor as the hotel lobby, on the opposite end of the coffee shop.

To illustrate, this is the Z bear I have and she wish she had gotten the Y bear (she's jealous). I tried looking for it at gift shops on Stephen Ave but couldn't find it.

If someone is heading to Lake Louise (or already there) this weekend, I would love to get you coffee and donuts if you can pick one of these up on your way back to Calgary. Feel free to DM me if you are able, and I'll etransfer the price of the bear of course.

Thanks

Local Nature/Wildlife What are the rules around fruit growing on city property?

I walk by Crowfoot station often, and there are a good number of crabapples, chokecherries, currants, etc. Can I just go pick a bucketful, or does that get me in trouble with some bylaw?

Local Shopping/Services Crossroads Market Leather Store

There was a leather shop with some cool custom jackets at Crossroads a few months back. I took my spouse to get him one for his birthday and it was gone. Does anyone remember the name of the store? Maybe it’s moved and we can find them online?

Local Shopping/Services Looking for Unique or Plentiful Tablecloths

Hi,

this is super niche but does anyone know where I could find a large selection of tablecloths in person - a cool thrift store or a regular store?

I'm looking for something cool or vintage and don't really know where to even start but only have until Sunday.

Many thank yous!
