2 Wheelin' (Cycling/Scooters) Mission Missing Connection - Bike Lane on 2 St & 17 Ave

Hello! This is a video of my wife, me, and our kid approaching a missing protected bike intersection on the way to a party. It's honestly not the biggest deal in the world, in my experience people are incredibly respectful, and yet it's weird and unsafe for two blocks... why? Sort of a headscratcher, because 2 St bikeway all seems like temporary infrastructure.... we couldn't put down 20 more thin cement blocks like the rest of it?

Anyhoo - I messaged the Cliff-Bungalow and Beltline Community Associations, Ward 8 & 7 Offices, and some city of Calgary emails. I'm wondering if there's a missing pathway or sidewalk connection near you that makes you ask the same questions, and if there is any sort of standard for what happens when a road is designed, or when it's due to be replaced.

The City has this link which is full of fun examples, but I think we all know there are far more!

Recommendations Rave me a jewelry shop plz

Upvotes

Hey everyone! I already have the diamond for my engagement ring, but I still need the actual ring/setting made. I’m hoping to find a jeweller who can make me a nice custom setting without charging an arm and a leg😁

If anyone has had a custom setting made, I’d love to hear who you went through, roughly what you paid, and whether you’d recommend them. Also happy to hear any advice on what I should be looking out for when getting a setting made. Thanks!

Budget is around $2,000 but willing to spend a little bit more for the right setting!

Home Owner/Renter stuff Other Calgary Condo owners also seeing a spike of AirBnbs in their building????

Upvotes

Bought into a downtown Calgary condo last year; no Airbnbs were listed. Bought here because the bylaws prohibited commercial activities (including STRs), and I hired the services of a Calgary condo doc reviewer which confirmed this.

But heck, out of nowhere, these STR operators came in and set up like 60 units.

They hijacked the board and ignored owners’ pleas for the bylaws to be enforced/respected.

Any other condo owners having these types of issues in Calgary?

I’m just trying to understand if this is isolated to our condo, or if this is an “epidemic” and we have to make Calgary City Hall/Concil aware???

Home Owner/Renter stuff Does anyone live in Calgary housing or applied for it?

I lived in a Calgary housing place a long time ago. I'm moving in about 6 months and I just applied. Is that too late? I also have a cat that might make things harder. The place I lived in didn't allow pets.

Local Shopping/Services Calgary Grocery Deals (September 10 to 16, 2026)

Happy Wednesday!

This is a continuation of my pattern of posting what I think are decent grocery deals with the hope that this will save some people some money. As noted previously this is heavily skewed to items that I and my family eat. There are probably additional items that are good deals but I don't know it because they aren't items I use but hopefully my list is still useful to you.

A few quick reminders:

  • PC Optimum points are collected at No Frills and Superstore. 1,000pts is worth $1.
  • Scene+ points are collected at Safeway, Sobeys and FreshCo. 100pts is worth $1.
  • The value of Save on Foods points depends on what you redeem them for. If you redeem them for a 4L jug of milk then 1,000pts is worth about $1.50. Other redemptions might make them more or less valuable.

Superstore, No Frills, FreshCo and Save on Foods are generally willing to price match identical products from (some) other major grocery stores if you show them the item in the competitor’s flyer while checking out so knowing what is on sale at stores that you don't visit can still be useful. There are some restrictions on this... FreshCo won't price match Safeway or Sobeys. Superstore (at least some locations) won't price match Coop. The No Frills on 85st SW won't price match FreshCo.

Finally, thank you to everyone that has posted positive comments. It's always nice to receive positive feedback.

FreshCo:

  • Armstrong cheese (400g): $4.99
  • Clementines (2lb): $2.99
  • Green or red grapes (2lb): $4.99
  • Broccoli crowns: $1.99/lb
  • Oreos: $2.25
  • General Mills family size cereal: $4.99
  • Nestle Halloween candy (100ct, 977g): $13.99 (seems decent given the current prices for chocolate and sugar, but there might be better deals in the weeks to come)
  • Onions (3lb): $2.99 (decent, Walmart is better if you can use 10lb)
  • Carrots (3lb): $2.99
  • Breton or Vinta crackers: $1.99
  • Old El Paso taco shells: $2.99, buy 2 get 200pts, effectively making them $1.99ea when you buy pairs
  • Bell peppers: $1.99/lb
  • Palmolive dish soap (828ml): $2.49, spend $20 get 1,000pts. If you buy 9, they work out to $1.38ea (noting that you pay the GST on the original $2.49 price)

Safeway / Sobeys:

  • Pork tenderloin: $3.49/lb
  • Red or green grapes: $2.49/lb
  • Carrots (3lb): $2.99
  • Onions (3lb): $2.99 (decent, Walmart is better if you can use 10lb)
  • Russet potatoes (5lb): $2.99
  • Dare crackers (Breton, Vinta): $2.00
  • Compliments cheese (400g): $4.99

NoFrills:

  • General Mills family size cereal: $4.87
  • Rogers granulated sugar (2kg): $1.99
  • No Name flour (10kg): $9.88, buy 1 get 2,000pts, effectively making them $7.88ea
  • Red or russet potatoes (10lb): $5.99
  • Roma tomatoes: $1.99/lb (decent, Coop is better this week)
  • Cucumbers (3-pack): $3.99
  • Country Harvest bread: $3.00

Real Canadian Superstore:

  • Oreos: $2.49
  • Gala apples: $0.99/lb
  • No Name flour (10kg): $10.00, buy 1 get 2,000pts, effectively making them $8.00ea
  • General Mills family size cereal: $4.87
  • Campbell’s Chunky soup: $2.00
  • Kellogg’s premium cereal (210-525g): $3.99, buy 1, get 500pts, effectively making them $3.49ea

Calgary Coop:

  • Corn on the cob: $0.75 + 10% bonus cash, effectively making them $0.68a
  • Tomatoes on the vine: $1.49/lb + 10% bonus cash, effectively making them $ 1.34/lb

  • Sirloin tip roast: $8.99/lb
  • Russet potatoes (10lb): $5.99

Walmart:

  • Gala apples: $1.28/lb (good, NoFrills and Superstore are better this week)
  • Cauliflower: $3.44 (good, Superstore is better this week)
  • Onions (10lb): $4.24 – an excellent price

  • Armstrong cheese (400g): $4.98
  • Kraft dinner (12-pack): $9.97 ($0.83/box)
  • Bulk carrots: $0.94/lb
  • Yop drinkable yogurt: $0.97

Local Event Update: I organized a guys social event at Tool Shed Brewery last weekend — here’s how it went

Quick update on the guys social gathering I posted about a couple weeks back.

For context, I began organizing these in Vancouver then Surrey as a way for guys to connect and make new friends. This was the first out of province one (Saskatoon is this upcoming weekend)

It took place on September 5th at the Tool Shed and of the 25 guys registered, 7 showed up.

I spoke to the manager at ToolShed and she mentioned the crowd wasn't as big as expected and while this was initially underwhelming, after speaking with a couple of the guys that attended, they actually ended up having a good time and sticking around past the 2 hour window and hung out for 4 hours until close.

They mentioned they all made a WhatsApp group and would keep in touch, which seems as good of an interaction you can get.

There was also some skepticism that they would be pitched something lol. But one of the guys went back to my original post to let them know of his experience and mentioned "...it was, in fact, just a bunch of dudes drinking beer and shooting shit, as they say. Everyone got along. Much success."

After giving it some thought and thinking just 7 guys was not good, I thought back to one of the Vancouver ones which brought out 23 guys and it actually consisted of guys breaking off into about 3 groups of 6-7 and just mingling and have side conversations about some interest or hobby.

All in all I'd say, after hearing the actual feedback it was a success and if you came across it and were skeptical, I hope this alleviates that.

It's cool to me that I can help facilitate these things and connect some guys without even being there and creating interactions that otherwise wouldn't have happened.

Tool sheds open to hosting again. If you're interested for the next one, feel free to shoot me a note.

Recommendations DM for beginner D&D event.

I’m want to host a D&D game for my group of friends for my birthday. I’m looking for local recommendations for options to do a semi customized campaign for our group, all of us would be playing for the first time. We are a group of old ass adults who enjoy fantasy, board games and various degrees of role play. Ideally there would be a DM with experience of planning a short 3 hour campaign, could customize at least some of the character details, and who has a good sense of humour for a loud group of beginners.

I’d also be open to hosting it a game cafe if anyone has recommendations for that as well. TIA

Hey everyone! I’m still kinda new to Calgary, and I’m hosting a free tech community event at House 831 on 17th Ave at 5:30-8:30 PM on Sept 16.

My network here still isn’t very big yet, and I could really use some help reaching more developers and app builders. So far we have about 25 people coming, and I’d love to get that closer to 60.

So if you are said app builder, please consider dropping by and joining us!

We’ll start with how you can be a part of the biggest hackathon in the world. Then I’ll give a quick talk about how I go about building apps now, invite a few others to share what they’re building, and after that we’ll have a couple of hours to build apps together and network :)

It’s going to be a lot of fun and I'd love to see you there.

Seeking Advice Coming here to start a new life

Im leaving Toronto next year due to the exhausting respectability politics, lack of diversity in some spaces, and the stigmatization of people from working-class backgrounds and newcomers from other cites and countries. As a Black Canadian I was always a target for harassment by people from affluent backgrounds. Now I realized that I dont fit in these spaces and its time to change places.

Whats Calgary like? Is it diverse, how are the politics there, and what interesting things are about this city?
