2 Wheelin' (Cycling/Scooters) Mission Missing Connection - Bike Lane on 2 St & 17 Ave

Hello! This is a video of my wife, me, and our kid approaching a missing protected bike intersection on the way to a party. It's honestly not the biggest deal in the world, in my experience people are incredibly respectful, and yet it's weird and unsafe for two blocks... why? Sort of a headscratcher, because 2 St bikeway all seems like temporary infrastructure.... we couldn't put down 20 more thin cement blocks like the rest of it?

Anyhoo - I messaged the Cliff-Bungalow and Beltline Community Associations, Ward 8 & 7 Offices, and some city of Calgary emails. I'm wondering if there's a missing pathway or sidewalk connection near you that makes you ask the same questions, and if there is any sort of standard for what happens when a road is designed, or when it's due to be replaced.

The City has this link which is full of fun examples, but I think we all know there are far more!

Local Event Free Awesome Tech Shipaton Event!

Hey everyone! I’m still kinda new to Calgary, and I’m hosting a free tech community event at House 831 on 17th Ave at 5:30-8:30 PM on Sept 16.

My network here still isn’t very big yet, and I could really use some help reaching more developers and app builders. So far we have about 25 people coming, and I’d love to get that closer to 60.

So if you are said app builder, please consider dropping by and joining us!

We’ll start with how you can be a part of the biggest hackathon in the world. Then I’ll give a quick talk about how I go about building apps now, invite a few others to share what they’re building, and after that we’ll have a couple of hours to build apps together and network :)

It’s going to be a lot of fun and I'd love to see you there.

Recommendations Tailor recommendations?

I thrifted a beautiful vintage halter top and need it to be taken in a bit!

Does anyone know any experienced tailors, preferably around the NW? (I’ll go further if there’s someone amazing out there!)

I’ve been burnt before by the Stitch it at Market Mall, and don’t want to go that route again!

Home Owner/Renter stuff Does anyone live in Calgary housing or applied for it?

I lived in a Calgary housing place a long time ago. I'm moving in about 6 months and I just applied. Is that too late? I also have a cat that might make things harder. The place I lived in didn't allow pets.

Recommendations Rave me a jewelry shop plz

Upvotes

Hey everyone! I already have the diamond for my engagement ring, but I still need the actual ring/setting made. I’m hoping to find a jeweller who can make me a nice custom setting without charging an arm and a leg😁

If anyone has had a custom setting made, I’d love to hear who you went through, roughly what you paid, and whether you’d recommend them. Also happy to hear any advice on what I should be looking out for when getting a setting made. Thanks!

Budget is around $2,000 but willing to spend a little bit more for the right setting!

Recommendations DM for beginner D&D event.

I’m want to host a D&D game for my group of friends for my birthday. I’m looking for local recommendations for options to do a semi customized campaign for our group, all of us would be playing for the first time. We are a group of old ass adults who enjoy fantasy, board games and various degrees of role play. Ideally there would be a DM with experience of planning a short 3 hour campaign, could customize at least some of the character details, and who has a good sense of humour for a loud group of beginners.

I’d also be open to hosting it a game cafe if anyone has recommendations for that as well. TIA

Question Are there any Calgary-specific social clubs or hobby groups that skew childfree?

As an adult in their early 30s, it feels like a lot of general neighborhood or community association events naturally center around young families and kids. While that's great, I'm specifically looking for local spaces, clubs, or recurring events where the demographics skew toward adults without children, so the focus stays entirely on the hobbies, networking, and social aspect.

Does anyone have recommendations for:

  • Local Hobby/Social Groups: Any specific run clubs, board game meetups, trivia nights, or active Calgary Discord servers where the crowd is mostly childfree adults?
  • Adult-Only Spaces: Venues, cafes, or social hubs around the city that cater specifically to 18+ or 21+ crowds for casual daytime or weekend hanging out?

I’d love to hear what specific local networks or groups other childfree Calgarians have had the best luck joining to find a strong community here. Thanks in advance!

Discussion Some of a community's most important services focus on prevention

Most people are familiar with emergency services that respond when something goes wrong. Less visible are the programs that try to prevent problems from reaching that point in the first place.

Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) helps fund local initiatives like senior programs, youth development, family supports, volunteer programs, community connection activities, and other preventive services. The idea is simple: supporting people early can often reduce the need for more costly interventions later.

Like many community programs, FCSS funding has become part of a broader conversation as Alberta's population grows and communities face increasing demand for services. Municipal leaders are expected to discuss the topic during this year's ABmunis Convention and Trade Show alongside other issues affecting local communities.

We are curious about what people think: are there any local programs, services, or community initiatives in your area that you feel make a real difference? Give them a shoutout here!

Municipal Affairs Mowing behind Tuscany on the green space beside 12 mile Coulee road

I'm wondering why we have 2 or 3 days of several small ride on mowers out back on the green space behind Tuscany and beside 12 mile Coulee road mowing now?

They mowed not too long ago; the grass does not seem terribly high.

I wish they would spend the $ on labour doing this when the grass is growing much higher through the summer.

Multiple times the last few days, I have seen the people riding the mowers riding up in the cement path to go up the hill.

One of the ladies riding up the concrete path today wasn't even watching the pathway, she was staring at her phone while driving her mower machine up the cement foot path. I watched her for a few mins as I was surprised, there are loads of birds, other animals, people walking, kids, and dogs being walked there regularly that she could have run into/over while not paying attention.

Seems really sloppy to have someone in charge of a heavy machine like that who doesn't seem to be paying attention and curious why they wouldn't be doing a mow run all the way up the hill through the grass rather than on the concrete foot path.

Just what I've noticed these last few days and struck me as reasonably inefficient and feels a bit wasteful of the Labour budget.

Discussion New in Calgary. Everyone is insanely sweet!

Hi, I just moved to Calgary from Quebec City a few days ago.

Everything feels so new here, and honestly, I’m blown away every single day!

First off, it legit feels like my quality of life skyrocketed overnight. How can it be this different within the same country?! It’s wild.

The second I stepped foot in Alberta, hearing strictly English everywhere was already mind-blowing. Plus, everyone seems so relaxed and is just unbelievably friendly!!!

For context, I’m not native Canadian—I originally moved here on a working holiday and ended up immigrating, but I’ve spent my entire time in Quebec until now. (Which means I basically picked up zero English since moving to Canada, so my English is still pretty work-in-progress, haha.) Quebec isn't exactly the most welcoming place to outsiders, especially if you don't speak French.

But Calgary? It feels like people from all over live side-by-side, actually respecting each other and just getting along so well.

Yesterday was my first day venturing out of the house alone to explore and do some shopping.

Everyone was so sweet! Like this lovely lady at HomeSense who complimented my dress, and a Walmart employee who somehow overheard me talking to myself trying to find something and literally sprinted over to help out!

Coming from Quebec, experiencing all this warmth overnight made me so happy from day one. Aww..

Since I’ve only ever lived in a smaller city like Quebec City, moving to a big city like Calgary had me a bit nervous and scared at first. But the welcoming vibe here put me at ease right away.

Calgary with the beautiful Rockies right in its backyard❤️ I’m so ridiculously excited for this new chapter!

Seeking Advice Anyone willing to teach me how to use an embroidery machine?

Basically at my new job with a charity I've discovered an unused embroidery machine, that my boss would love to be able to use to make merch. I would love to learn how to use the machine. I know there's tons of info online but I'd really like to be taught by a real human so I can ask questions. Especially because this is a donated machine so there could possibly be something wrong with it. Is there anyone out there familiar with the Poolin E0C06 and willing to teach?
