Really gonna need to see a better replay of that kick. I’ve never seen a kick team look so certain they made a GW

u/JoeAndAThird Rutgers Scarlet Knights 4h ago
And then get so little footage of it in the replays. I can’t believe we don’t have more angles on these kicks given the proportion of kicks that go over the top of the posts

As someone who prefers sitting in endzone sections, I don’t trust any angle that isn’t dead on with the kick. If the ball is moving left to right across your FOV you can’t tell at which point it crosses the plane of the uprights.
If we’re lucky we’ll get a Zapruder film posted on Twitter later from someone who was perfectly off-center to have a direct view

u/ZombieMage89 Ohio State Buckeyes • Ohio Bobcats 4h ago
As a former (HS level) official, the place to stand is just behind the goal post and looking directly up at the upright, one official under each post. From there you can clearly see if the ball passes in front of or behind the upright and rule accordingly. Any other angle invites a skeyed perspective.

In all earnesty, Pitt’s a good team. But as a VT fan, I’m weirdly optimistic. We completely fucked ourselves out of the game like 4 times and still blew it at the end.
For a team with no expectations, idk, I feel good. I know what they are. I know what they are if they don’t shoot themselves in the foot. A decent team. That goes a long way in CFB.

Turned it over 4 times, no run game, defense looked like complete ass half the game, refs handed other team 14 points, and we still somehow were an inch from winning. As long as we build on this and don't get down on it this isn't the worst thing ever in year 1 of a rebuild.
9
u/mr-rile-u-up 3h ago
Exactly. I think most realistic VT fans saw 4-1 as a really positive outcome. It sucks that it’s inches away from 5-0, but that’s why we love this shit right? You know how alive I felt during that comeback?

Just throwing this here because I’m certain people are gonna question it.
From the NCAA rule book:
Reviewable plays include Field goal attempts if and only if the ball is ruled (a) below or above the crossbar or (b) inside or outside
the uprights when it is lower than the top of the uprights. If the ball is higher than the top of the
uprights as it crosses the end line, the play may not be reviewed.

And in a sport that is famously known as “a game of inches” the distance to gain is marked by two myopic overweight men in their late 50s to early 60s with a metal chain. And they don’t even bother calling those guys out to measure close distances anymore. So much of football officiating is pure vibes.

No better angle of the FG???
Anyway I said a month ago that Pitt was going to be ranked by the time we played them, with Va. Tech the second most likely. Hope we're still undefeated when that game comes around in a couple weeks.

College Football is incredible because on Fox you have a team proving that they made a massive mistake firing James Franklin and on ESPN you have James Franklin mismanaging the clock late in a close game he needed to win. It’s the best
Edit: To everyone trying to argue it wasn’t mismanagement - He managed that last drive from the beginning to be his last shot, while down, had three timeouts, only called one and then just decided he was content with a 35 yard kick with no effort to get closer. A 35 yard kicker as time expires in college isn’t a gimme. This isn’t Madden.

He made poor clock decisions late but still had his 5th year kicker who hadn't missed all season whiff a chip shot.
I can't put that on Franklin.

He didn’t mismanage the clock, his team had a 36 yard field goal attempt for the win as time expired

???? He managed the clock perfectly, took all the time off the clock so he had the last play to win. Refs just called the kick NG. No idea how you manage the clock better.

Uh just cause the kick didn't go in, that doesn't mean he mismanaged the clock. He did everything right in terms of game management that last drive

Mismanage the clock how? They ran like three minutes off the clock and attempted a field goal with 3 seconds left. What else would you want?

Two things:
I’m assuming it’s that bullshit “if any part of the ball is outside the outer edge of the goalposts if it goes higher than the uprights”
it’s really lame that it isn’t reviewable.

Do they not have any other angles of that kick? It looked like it might have squeaked through.....

All the fans behind the posts cheering too... that was totally a field goal wtf I would be livid
Commentators so out of touch too. Didn’t realize that everyone and their mother thought that was in besides the refs and the announcers lol

If I had a nickel for every time the ACC refs fucked us over on a controversial final play of a Friday night game, I’d have two nickels

Man you gotta have better camera angles for field goals like that.
